Quote of the day I

“Leave "corporate America" and get a non-job as a diversity enforcement officer: that's where the big bucks are.”
― Mark Steyn, After America: Get Ready for Armageddon

Quote of the day II

“The most erroneous assumption is to the effect that the aim of public education is to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence, and so make them fit to discharge the duties of citizenship in an enlightened and independent manner. Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim of public education is not to spread enlightenment at all; it is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to put down dissent and originality. That is its aim in the United States, whatever the pretensions of politicians, pedagogues and other such mountebanks, and that is its aim everywhere else.”
― H.L. Mencken

School's Out

Graudation speeches have become entertainment.

’Tis the season of college graduation ceremonies, and throughout the land graduating students don overpriced robes and mortarboards and submit to the wisdom of appointed elders before embarking on the next stages of life’s great journey.
Or they get dating advice from a Broadway star, which Lin-Manuel Miranda of “Hamilton” recently doled out when he addressed graduating students at the University of Pennsylvania

When did celebrities become the new go-to speakers at college commencements, and can they be stopped?
Time magazine recently offered a potted history of commencement addresses, noting the shift over the years from college administrators and lowly intellectuals toward actors, singers, and other miscellaneous celebrities. “There’s no clear indication of which university started the trend of tapping celebrities to speak at graduations, but over the past three or four decades their numbers have grown from a few fun speakers amid a torrent of university officials to the flood of businesspeople, actors, writers and humorists who headline today’s ceremonies,” the magazine noted.

The best graduation speech never given. This speech should be heard by every High School and College graduate. Hell, it should be taught every day.

Here are 10 people who didn't pay attention to science class in school. "To every action there is always opposed an equal reaction"

I took my dog to commencement (undergrad). Didn't listen to the speaker, didn't care to. I already had four years of constant intellectual droning. Why go another 30 minutes?

The dog enjoyed her time. She got lots of attention and tummy rubs. And the occassional snack from an unsuspecting grad.

I do remember the speaker at my high school graduation. He was an imbecilic professor in the drama department of the local university who spoke on the relationship between American imperialism and football.

Turns out my brother Psycho Basura doesn't want the stuff he asked for bad enough to pass along the alarm code that he has, and I don't.

Hope he's not planning on my getting that stuff before thieves do at this rate.

Or were you talking about something else?

193 If anyone is wondering, here's an update on my mother. My father and I have a relief and have be able to get a couple good nights' sleep in, which was a godsend.

We have one hour strictly enforced to visit her. Yesterday, she wasn't doing too well. She just had a look on her face that wasn't right at all, and even reminded me of her older brother, my uncle, when he went out of his mind there at the last. That was not a good thing to see.

Now, my father wanted to talk with the head nurse there alone, and I stayed with my mother. She said, "She's telling him lies about me!" And there was some stuff about they were "making fun of me on TV". Sort of spooky paranoia.

I wasn't too upbeat after that. But during today's visit, around noon, she was improved. She even smiled a little bit every now and then. She's always enjoyed various word puzzle things, and they had some in the day room there, plus other puzzles and reading materal. I got her interested in that, and we tried to get her to eat as much as possible.

So, I'm more hopeful today, but there can be ups and downs, so I'm not going to get my hopes too high. She could be the worst she's ever been tomorrow.

But we can get some rest, and attend to things around her that need attending.

If you can stop your PC from the upgrade, and get it to stay with Win 7 (I presume?), then run these procedures, soon as your box is stable.

http://tinyurl.com/guyy85w

That'll kill the whole Win 10 "requests" for upgrades, and will kill the file on the drive that keeps refreshing said Win 10 prompts.

It's a two part, two sequence thing. Do both.

If the Pens beat the Sharks for the Cup, I win the hockey pool I'm in. (You pick the winners of each round and I was the only one out of 720 entries, at $5 a pop, who had all four Round 2 winners correct.) Winning the pool this year, with the highest participation ever in the over 30 year history of this particular pool, would net me $1300. Last year, some guy won the pool with the first ever perfect score of 40 (1 point for Round 1 winners, 3 points for Round 2 winners, 5 points for semifinal winners and 10 points for picking the Cup winner.)

So this Rangers fan is rooting for the Pens over the Sharks. Nothing personal, it's just business.

266 251 I haven't been nagged on this box about getting Win10 because I have had Automatic Updates shut off from the get-go. Once in a blue moon, I will manually download and install Windows updates that have passed muster in the computing community at large.

I am getting nagged by Pale Moon, Skype, and Thunderbird to get "security" updates, which I am manfully resisting.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 19, 2016 12:32 AM (zKSco)

The problem with this theory is that the changelog for the updates shows the vulnerabilities being patched -- so every time a change gets pushed, the bad guys know they've got a limited time to use the highlighted weakness.

Posted by: cthulhu at May 19, 2016 12:38 AM (EzgxV)

267 AOP, check that AskWoody.com site for the ones to hide so you wont get it accidentally. I had all three, and was shocked because they say they are important, but obviously arent.. You just cant tell by reading the notes i found out.

Posted by: JarvisW at May 19, 2016 12:35 AM (R1ejq)

Well, of course MS will tell you that their spyware, AKA Win10 is "important". But that's why I said I check the computing community at large. Even places like this. If someone I trust here says I need to get KBxxxxx038 to fix a rootkit vulnerability or something, I will get it, or at least do a Web search on that number, and see if there are any known pitfalls.

271 This close to Israeli airspace, I'd imagine that the IDF has high-resolution radar scans of every 1/1000th of every second that the Airbus was in their radar's range.

And they'd have every byte of data going to and from that plane, too.

So, while the teevee talking heads are breathlessly bloviating, the adults in the IDF situation rooms have likely already plotted the trajectory and likely terminal points of every sizeable bit of the airplane (or parts thereof) in question.

And just another reason to never go into that region, with the exception of Israel.

276 To summarize for those watching idiots on CNN:

1. It was an AirBus A320. NOT a 737-200, the 737-200 is the regular aircraft for that flight.
2. There was NO weather issue. The storms the weather clown was discussing were bypassed earlier in the flight.
3. 37000ft at Cruise speed; then data dropped.
4. Very good data coverage in that areas
5. Not a primary radar drop - transponder drop.
6. 20-25min out, 10min inside Egypt airspace over Med
7. 3 security crew. I dont know if that's normal for this flight.
8. It flew 5 legs today, included a Tunisia stop (Eritria -Cairo-Tunisia -Cairo - Paris ---> Cairo)

279 259 cthulhu, and Mint runs Windows programs?

Posted by: qdpsteve at May 19, 2016 12:34 AM (ntObR)

There are at least three ways to run Windows programs under Mint Linux. First, you can find an equivalent program in the Linux world -- Firefox, for example, is available under Linux or Windows. Second, you can run a Windows program using Wine, which substitutes Linux system calls for Windows system calls -- there is a facility called "Play On Linux" which attempts to make this user-friendly (it's not). One problem with this is that it opens your computer to the various security rot items that Windows has. Third, you can run a Windows "virtual machine" inside of Mint. Almost any Windows software can run on this virtual machine, and any malware/screwups are securely compartmented.

Peace be with you, Brother. Such a hopeful update with all its caveats is Grace found and relief granted.

We enjoy our beautiful Grace none-too-often so acceptance of the beauty of a joy of such small remittance is a beauty beheld by only those within the throes of turmoil.

Our Grace, selfish, beyond the throes go unappreciated, as artists and poets before us have written in tomes and libraries beyond capacity.

My love for you and your situation knows only the limits of Heaven.

Your Grace has given strength to the believers yet to follow your path to Hope and Light.

I cried last weekend, as my own Father asked me for help with his lawn tractor. This man is a font of knowledge and strength. An engineer without a degree. My masterful and beautiful muse of strength.

As his mind slowly fails him, I become his sword. I absorb his soul and weep not amidst his presence, as I am becoming what he bestowed upon me.

I weep in my soulful hours and understand that I must carry on his guidance as my own.

Knowing your Graceful moments also gives me strength. Strength I didn't know that I ever had.

Your small moments allow others to realize Love; Fortify strength; Accept God's Will.

I will be forever grateful for your posts and the posts of many others who have graciously, eternally fortified our Love, Peace, Grace, Light and Joy.

Thank You, Sir.

On my knees, I pray for you and your Family.

293 Jean, I thought the reports were the flight dropped transponder when about 10 mi. out of Egyptian airspace.

I think your conjecture about the picket ship would be on point, here. Gut tells me the Hawkeye would more likely be sniffing certain Eastern approaches, while the Naval assets would cover the Med.

We won't know, and they won't tell, which is fine by me.

Odds are though, that recovery forces have already received coordinates, vectors, terrain reports, water depths, currents and temps, and other data necessary to do the job.

And meanwhile, the teevee jabberers jabber.

For me, it's time to sound retreat, salute the flag and hit the horizontal.

300 Well, as of today, I have working A/C in my old beater '88 Diesel Suburban, with the redoubtable 6.2 liter engine.

I bought one can of refrigerant oil, and two cans of hydrocarbon refrigerant (basically propane/isobutane mixture), which they sell a lot of here, to refill A/C units in big tractors and combines.

Now, the '88 was a Freon 12 unit, and the only can tap hose I had was for a CFC134a system (and I know I had the right one, but cannot find it). What to do, what to do? Well, I found a 1/4" compression nut, off a Swagelok fitting, that match the thread on the charging nipple on the system. Put a single flare in a short piece of 1/4" copper tubing. That fit the nipple's tapered end nicely. To depress the Schrader valve in the nipple, I ground flats on the threads of a sheet metal screw, and screwed it into the flared end of the copper tube, and sawed it off, leaving a short stub. That did the trick, and still allowed flow past it through the tube.

Then I cut the hose on my el-cheapo CFC-134a can tap, pushed the 1/4" copper tube into it, which was a tight fit, and installed a hose clamp. The darn thing worked perfectly, and with the three cans emptied into the system, there was enough pressure for the compressor to come on, and stay on, and it blows cold like a champ. It could probably handle one more can, since the label on the A/C said its capacity was three pounds of R12, and the little cans are equivalent to 17 ounces R12.

Another 'standard' question I've been asked by medical professionals of late is, 'Do you live alone?' If you answer, 'No', they then go right to question 2: 'Have you been subject to domestic abuse/violence at home?' (To me, that's more a matter for the police and not a doctor, like college rape kangaroo courts.) I never heard these questions 10 years ago.

Another question I've heard with increasing frequency, no matter the docs' specialty, is, 'Are you sexually active?' If asked, I just look at my hand and laugh.

One would expect, out of all the major and minor parties in the United States of America, that the Libertarian Party would be the one that would support businesses in their right to refuse service if they find such service to be morally repugnant, based on the idea that the state shouldn't coerce people as such. One, however, would be wrong.

Life has a way of doing that now-and-again.

One of the weirder stories I have is when I was auditing a condominium complex in Beverly Hills. Management had me stuck in a Penthouse suite whose absentee owner had last been there a decade prior -- I refooted the books and documented audit tests on his dining-room table. So, one day, I ride the elevator up with a bunch more receipts and checks, and I witness the following:

Guy gets off the elevator, and calls to another guy down the hall -- "Fred, Fred -- is that you?" The other guy goes, "George!!! Fancy meeting you here! When was the last time?" First guy goes, "must be twenty years or so, you had that caravan of Persian carpets."

Then the elevator doors closed and I continued up to the Penthouse.

The world can be an amazingly small and cozy place.

376 In a surprise announcement, the people in charge of the California High Speed Rail project today revealed that -- ta-da!! -- there is yet another delay in the first "train to nowhere" test section in the Central Valley.

How long is this new delay?

Four...........wait for it..........YEARS!

http://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/ First-segment-of-high-speed-rail-hits-another-snag-7683976.php

This is in addition to multiple earlier delays.

Now they're claiming that for a mere umpty-ump billion something something double-billion dollars, they pinky-swear to have the Corcoran-to-Chowchilla (i.e. nowhere-to-nowhere) test tracks totally completed by 2022! Totally!

After that, something something unicorn farts couple extra hundred billion dollars or so and magic! the whole rest of the system will be started, built and completed three years after that.

Even though they haven't even figured out the route yet.

Even though they haven't even bought the land or the right-of-way yet.

Even thought every single landowner "in the way" is fighting the project in court.

Even though the whole thing is already tens of billions of dollars over budget and nothing has even been built yet.

Even though they still don't know, even after 12 years of studies, how they plan to get over the Tehachapi Mountains into LA.

Even though they now concede that the only way into San Francisco will involve dozens of miles of slow-speed tracks (shared with other train systems), and that segment of the overall trip (merely SF to San Jose) will take more time than a plane flight all the way to LA.

Even though the funding is already dried up.

Even though the price of a tran ticket will be much higher than a plane ticket to the same destination.

Even though the travel time will be 3x - 4x longer than a plane flight.

Even though there is no magical "green energy fairy" which will make the project more fuel efficient than planes or motor vehicles.

Even though polls show that voters are ready to pull the plug on the entire failed project.

Surely this is the boondoggle of the century.

It doesn't matter to The Ruling Class. The ballot measure that approved the 49ers stadium had NOTHING to do with the final deal -- and was so different that there was a referendum against the changes.....which was just ignored.

If you mark a ballot to support a law that does X, it will be taken as citizen approval for Y that sounds something like X....and any proposal Z that rejects the differences will be blown off without public input.

Ahh, the old Soviet joke comes to mind:

Lenin, Stalin, Kruschev, and Brezhnev are on a train when it suddenly stops. A group of workers and peasants stand around, staring absently at the locomotive.

Lenin says, "We should educate, organize, and lead those workers and peasants and then let them fix the problem." Stalin leans his head out the window and yells to the crowd "You've got three minutes to get this train moving again, or we'll start shooting you." Khrushchev says that maybe they need to reorganize the entire Soviet rail industry in order to fix the problem. Brezhnev stands up, pulls the curtains on the car and puts a gramophone record on the player. He drops the needle, and the sounds of a locomotive and trains wheels on rails plays.

"Problem solved," he says.

398 RE: CA bullet train boondoggle and crony corruption. Liberals just love to make up BS lies to cover these kinds of mass transit boondoggles by saying that car transportation is also subsidized by construction of roads and bridges.

What they refuse to acknowledge is that this construction is paid for by direct taxes on gasoline and car incensing. If you mention that of course they will say that the taxes there are not high enough to pay for all the money spent.

In that they refuse to acknowledge that right off the top at the federal level 20% of those taxes are diverted for urban mass transit. And that money being a fungible payout is used to divert urban taxes to other socialist projects (and pockets) rather than city buses which should be private.

Also those taxes at both the federal and State levels are diverted no non-highway boondoggles that they say are highway spending but really are not. But somebody will always benefit from those projects. IOW it becomes a slush fund.

So what does the State do in the event they have frittered away all of the money. Why they convert their sections of the super highways to toll roads and then that money becomes yet another slush fund.

Which brings up another interesting question. It used to be illegal for a federal superhighway to be made a toll road since it was paid for by federal funding. Who changed that?

400 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, May 19, 2016. On this day in 1986 the Firearm Owners Protection Act was signed into law by U.S. President Ronald Reagan. This act was intended to somewhat ease some of the gun control provisions of the unconstitutional 1968 act and to prevent ATF harassment of gun shops with endless audits. I have reviewed the provisions of this act and feel that it is largely ignored and as to the MFM it may as well not exist.

The chairman of the top House investigative panel introduced a measure Wednesday to censure IRS Commissioner John Koskinen and remove him from office without a pension in the latest bid by Republicans to pressure him into being more cooperative in their probe of the 2013 IRS targeting scandal.

He had already called for impeachment of Koskinen in a prior vote of the committee. The House leadership has stalled that bill. The call for censure also calls for his removal from office with no pension. Of course Elijah Cummings, Obama's hit man on all committees, says it is all a political witch-hunt and does everything he can do to disrupt the committee. Perhaps when Trump takes over the IRS can audit him 4 or 5 times a year until he takes up residence beneath the earth.

429 Well, more punishment for getting old. I learned today that wifey has yet another appointment at MUSC in Charleston so her "local city doctor" (45 min drive time one way) can get a second opinion on a PEP scan that came out negative for cancer.

This will be the second time he has sent her down to that place to get another opinion and it was a colossal waste of time. It is an all-day affair with 6 hours of drive time and no telling how long in the waiting rooms because doctors are not capable of keeping their appointments on time.

The last time we went down there a few months ago they were supposed to do some kind of special test. Instead they wanted to cut on her throat again to get out all the scar tissue from all the other times they had cut on her throat. Didn't run the test the local doctor wanted anyway.

I have no confidence in the trip at all. It would seem to me that the MUSC doctor can look at the results from the PEP scan as a "consultant" and bill for that without making another all day trip and dealing with Charleston traffic and parking.

Unfortunately, like every other hospital I am familiar with in the US, there are never any real restaurants near the hospital. Generally all the hospitals are located in bad neighborhoods in the middle of the city, have inadequate parking, and take up more than a square mile of real estate. The only food available is the hospital cafeteria.

If you mean the MUSC doctor that would be highly unlikely. And the scan was the location where her thyroid used to be. That was removed long ago with the final operation at MUSC. Evidently there was a tiny bit of the thyroid that was left which allowed the cancer to return.

451 So last year, the baltimore County Exec, when demands for Air Conditioning in the few remaining uneducated schools became no longer avoidable, received funds from the State of Maryland to accelerate the installation.

County Exec, as a position statement for his expected run agains the Republican Governor in the next election basically said, "You can't tell me what to do".

Republican Governor said "We can't make you, but funds from the Stat are frozen till you pull your head out of your ass, and figure out how to accomplish this".

County Exec just announced that they will be able to accelerate the process, and get it done.

Liberal news reports that it's the County Exec's genius which allowed this to happen.

Fox affiliate reports that it's because due to bad accounting practices, the County School system has suddenly discovered a previously unidentified $20,000,000.00 surplus in the budget.

Consequently, they are organized, not against the cigar-smoking dude from the Monopoly game, who's trying to squeeze an extra nickel an hour out of them, or whatever it is they claim, but rather the put-upon taxpayer, who's expected to pay the freight for these gold-bricking hacks.

464 Cardinal Robert Sarah of Guinea made a very strong statement at the National; prayer breakfast about the demonic threat to the US. That threat is the massive culture changes being forced on us by the progs/libs and has reached the critical point.

Great to see a public statement like that but what would be even better is to see the Church clearly identify the Dems as the main culprit and stop cooperating with them in any area because their "compassion" matches much of the churches mission. Dems will destroy the Catholic church in this country if it cannot be brought to heel 100%. Surely the church hierarchy can see this.

482 The Curious Case of the ONT Photo:

So, in this photo we have a conundrum: a vehicle that has plowed into a tree with enough speed to do damage...and a left rear wheel that is deflated. How did that happen? Shock of impact? Does that make sense? No.

Looking at the scene further--it appears to be a quiet street, so why did the driver crash? Trying to avoid traffic? And how does a truck that only probably went 30 mph flat out crash into a tree with sufficient speed to wreck it such? Did the driver not brake? It's a wide street, and the driver hit the tree head on, so to impact with that speed, the only way it could have happened was if a full speed swerve from the right hand side of the road had occurred.

Note that the truck appears to be a Model-T, or similar such vehicle. We can make three assumptions then--no power steering, rear wheel drive..and throttle controls on the steering column.

Now come us back to the left rear wheel, and the initial question--how did the tree impact cause that?

Answer--it didn't. The wheel blew first, the truck was traveling along quickly enough so that the fully inflated right rear wheel started turning the truck to the left, an effect perhaps enhanced by the narrow bodyframe. The driver had to pull right and reduce throttle at the same time--which might have required more hands than were possessed. It is also possible, in that era of lack of standardization of auto controls, that the driver had come from another vehicle with a different control system, and in the moment of crisis, with a few seconds to reduce vehicle speed, misapplied control inputs.

At any rate, dear Watson--the left rear wheel caused the crash.

484 Third grade son had an ened of school year lesson in international history. The person profiled was...Nelson Mandela! Because what better could fit the narrative the public schools are teaching the rest of the year.

Of all the inspiring, towering figures in history that could be discussed I can't imagine why this third world revolutionary was chosen. No mention was made of of his wonderful wife Winnie Mandela and her United Football Club.

Why the emphasis on Third-Worlders, you ask?

Look around you - we are being transformed into a Third World nation, and the people doing it want to make damned sure that we're run like one.

495 The tower of Babel shows one problem with religion: on one hand, if there is an appearance of order, such as life, that is explained by an intelligent powerful designer, God. But if there is chaos, such as multiple languages, that is also explained by God: he confounded the humans' language as a punishment. It gives people an excuse to come up with facile, ad hoc explanations. That said, I think it would be far funnier to see the first caveman recognize the need for a past tense and try to get another caveman to understand this, than for fully formed languages to simply appear in their brains.

Thank God the crew are safe. And too bad about the plane - you'd think they'd be able to pull some parts off it to keep the fleet going.

(Yes, folks, we're at the point where our armed forces raid museums and wrecks for spare parts.)

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.

A little eye candy to start the day - the Ziegfeld Girl Hazel Forbes:

http://goo.gl/bh8cZ1

(there's a rather more racy photo of her I like, but I'll save it for the open thread).

She started out as a Miss Long Island and then a Miss United States in the "International Beauty Pageant" of 1926. She graduated from there into the Follies and, as was the lot of so many of Ziegfeld's girls, was wooed and won by a millionaire, who conveniently died in 1932 and left her around three million in 1930s bucks.

look at 2013 - 2014

Just like the House under Newt Gingrich during the Clinton years. Any bad think that the GOP put limits on spending must be suppressed, comrade.

Then look at 2009-2011 under the democrats.

There are real facts, and then there are true facts, comrade. Know the difference.

No money shall be drawn from the treasury, but in consequence of appropriations made by law.

Damn!

Just think of the carbon-credits we'll have to buy to off-set that!

The Stratofortress (a/k/a the BUFF) is a beast of a plane, a testament to American aerospace engineering, and one Hell of weapon. We probably couldn't design and produce it from scratch today if we had to.

Maybe. But I'm so disgusted by almost everything I hear and see from the pulpit on Sundays and the ravings of Red Frankie I think the RC has already been brought to heel. Whether it's the infiltration of commies or a desperate act to remain in power/relevant or just craven knee-buckling, I don't know. I'm actually kind of heartstick about all of this... there's only one priest in the area who appears to have a shred of sanity left. I believe he was good friends with Cardinal George... probably that's why.

Thanks for the links, Vic. I did get the first Executioner book for $1.99.
