May 12, 2016 Overnight Thread: Cultural Appropriation Appreciation Edition [Weirddave]

Cultural Appropriation.jpg

Look, I realize that all of the “cultural appropriation” garbage that we are bombarded with day after day is just the latest manifestation of Frankfort School* critical theory bullshit that has so debased our culture; but, it's also the aspect that bothers me the most, for the same reason that it is such an effective tool for the Progs. It bothers me for two reasons, #1 because it flies right in the face of what separates humans from other animals, and #2 because it is an (intentional) attack on the principles this country was founded on.

Humans are the only animal on the planet that possess the intellectual ability to build upon the knowledge and experiences of those who came before us. The simple term for this phenomenon is “progress”. When appreciation and improvement on what other peoples have accomplished is rejected as “appropriation”, what results is stagnation.

America was founded on many principles, but one of the most important is exemplified in our de facto motto E pluribus unum (Out of many, one). Anyone can become an American by moving here (legally) and integrating into our culture, but an implied part of that bargain is that you will bring the best aspects of where you come from with you so that we can incorporate them into a greater whole. Calling this appropriation seeks to reverse this process and fosters the segmentation into many out of the one, and I utterly reject the notion, so tonight's ONT is a celebration of cultural appropriation. That's right, tonight we are going to

appropriate.jpg

(Sorry. Leftover from last night. Won't happen again)

Lets start with a bite to eat, shall we? How about we appropriate some Vietnamese culture and grab a bite to eat over here.

Pho-King-Delicious.jpg

I love this for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, Pho is what God choses when he's in the mood for soup. Second, the restaurant name is a pun. “Pho” is pronounced “fuh”. There are dozens of restaurants with this name all across the country, but the original was opened in Southern California by a refugee from the Vietnam War in the mid 70s. Fleeing his homeland to our country, he not only supported his family by introducing us to some of the delicious food from his homeland, he did so by making a pun in our language that many people would miss. That's the kind of thinking that makes for a great American in my book.

Maybe soup's not your thing. That's OK, south of the border, down Mexico way, there is a cuisine known as “antijito” that you can find on any street corner. Gingy and I vacation in Mexico quite a bit, and you can generally find us eschewing the fancy resort spreads and heading straight into the nearest town with street food on our minds.

antijito.jpg

Cheap, filling and delicious, you can now find antijito food served in America too. The above picture was not taken in Mexico, but in Rosedale, Md. There, Frederico, a 5 star chef who legally immigrated to the states some years back serves the best authentic Mexican food in the country.

Now that we've eaten, what's next? Sports? Dancing? How about both in this amusingly captioned number from a Bollywood (hey, look, India's culturally appropriating us!) movie.

Now, I don't know who that guy is, but he can DANCE! I think I saw his picture in the dictionary under the entry for “suave”.

Not your speed? How about some homegrown talent. African Americans have immeasurably enriched American culture over the years, in science, literature and in the arts. Here's a clip from the 1943 movie Stormy Weather featuring the fabulous Nicholas Brothers.

How great is that? That clip just makes me happy. Don't look now, but it also features Cab Calloway and his orchestra, casually laying the foundation for all modern American musical styles.

Sports? Chances are good that at least one of the teams will be named after Native Americans. Now, the Left insists that this is a racist legacy of America's disgusting past. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Sports.jpg

America's natives fought tooth and nail for their way of life for 400 years against a vastly superior force. Their honor, bravery and tenacity are qualities that we admire and seek to emulate. By naming our teams after them we hold these qualities up as something to strive for, for they represent the best in humanity. We honor them and hold them forth as examples for our young men and women.

Language? As it is a melting pot, you can hear and learn any language on the planet in America. Here's a nice young lady that can help you learn Japanese, for example.

There are one or two things about her that really stand out, but I just can't put my finger on them.

How about husking a coconut with your teeth? I've never done that, but if I decided to would I be appropriating Polynesian culture? I don't think so, but it's nice to know that it can be done.

The common thread here is that all of these instances of things that could be considered “cultural appropriation” are nothing of the sort. America isn't taking these things away from the peoples that created them, we are recognizing their superiority. An American today can enjoy the skill and grace of the Nicholas Brothers and the wisdom of the Founding Fathers without apologizing for having either. It's not appropriation, it's appreciation, and it's one of the things that makes America great.

*Anyone unfamiliar with the Frankfort School should bring themselves up to speed, understanding what it is and what it did goes a long way towards understanding why we find ourselves where we do today. Bill Whittle gave an excellent explanation in a speech here.

Tonight's ONT brought to you by The Fucking Poncho!

Children's services has gone back on prior promises and told us we have to take back a lying, homicidal teenager back in the house or else file a judgment against us that we are unfit. They do not seem concerned that another child, my son, would be put at risk by her return.

However--our attorney may have an out for us. Since we have legal custody but not guardianship, we may actually be able to tell DCFS to go pound sand and relinquish her to the county or state without consequence. Hoping to hear about that soon.

143 Pho is awesome (I ran into a place called "What the Pho"). But it's not the only "noodles in soup" out there. There's a Cantonese version with thin wheat noodles, that are supposed to have a definite bite to them, and little wontons in there with shrimp in them. As with Pho, the broth has to be just right. One of the world's great cheap dishes, and almost unknown in the U.S. But if you're ever in San Francisco, swing by a little hole in the wall called "Hon's Wun Tun House," and treat yourself to a bowl of the good stuff.

It's in Vancouver, too, but that one is not a hole in the wall, and they have great pot stickers. You can even get roast duck in with your noodles.

177 When Leontine Price sang Verdi, or Grace Bumbry sang Richard Strauss, or Denyce Graves or Marian Anderson sang Gluck, or Paul Robeson performed Shakespeare, or Wynton Marsalis plays Bach: are *those* examples of cultural appropriation? No, of course not: these are great artists performing great works that are part of humanity's common cultural heritage. We are all the richer for it.

Granted, when a person of background A performs a work from background B, there are proprieties to be observed; just as when one is a guest in another's home. But as long as the work is performed with respect and dignity, it can and should be done by *anyone* with the talent to do it.

"Cultural appropriation" = leftists being assholes. Yet again.

179 Had 2 chili cheese dogs with onions and Tabasco from Mustard's today.

Good thing I went over, the Asian woman who handed me my order said (her English isn't great) "last day." I asked, what? "Last day, we close."

Uh oh. Thankfully the manager was right there. He said they're closing for a remodel but will be open again in a few weeks. I said okay, glad I came before you closed.

In fairness the restaurant itself *needs* a makeover, it still looks like 1981, and the whole mini-mall they're in is kind of run down. Not sure if they meant the whole strip is closing or just them. Either way, I sure hope they're actually back in a few weeks. There *is* another Mustard's location nearby, but they are *not* as tasty.

They made a movie about FDR's screwing around a few years ago. A comedy, I think. Can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, and I don't think it did well at the box office (didn't see it myself). IIRC, it's based around a historical meeting that FDR had with another foreign leader, and the PoV character is the woman that FDR was screwing at the time (who he takes to the meeting).

Eel's easy. Not even one of those "challenging" dishes. And a sushi bar is a good place to get it for the first time. It's cooked, and they brush a dark, sweet sauce on it. I don't know how it would even be possible not to like it. But make sure you say "sea eel." There is sometimes another eel on the menu that's more of a stretch.

That's nonsense. Our Lord specifically said "I will not drink it with you again until I drink it new with you in the kingdom."

Now, that could have just meant "when I rise again and have a meal with you" but there's actually no reference to Jesus eating. Possibly the road to Emmaus, but it sounds more like he showed up, gave the blessing, and then was gone. Quite a few Psalms about eating and drinking in paradise as well. Particularly wine is mentioned.

418 what is spaetzle? Looks basically like hash browns to me

Spaetzle is essentially homemade egg noodles. You mix eggs, coarse flour, and salt together (the coarse flour makes the dough crumbly), roll out the dough on a cutting board in thin strips, and then scrape the strips off the board into boiling salted water. When the spaetzle are cooked, they rise to the surface. You skim them off the top of the water and put them aside until the sauerbraten, beef stew, or sausage is ready. Spaetzle are almost always served with a meat dish that has a lot of gravy. Interesting that you thought they look like hash browns-- I guess homemade spaetzle do look like that, though. You can buy commercial precooked spaetzle that look more like regular egg noodles.

428 @412 But I cannot grok any Christian that claims drinking alcohol is forbidden. Its actively encouraged in the Wisdom literature, and Jesus specifically turned water into wine for his first miracle. I know, they claim it was grape juice but that's just... insultingly stupid.
-------------------

It typically revolves around two items.

1.) Issues with water, meaning that the alcohol was pretty much the only thing to drink for many people.
2.) The Bible does make a few negative comments about overdoing it with the alcohol. i.e. while there are no prohibitions against drinking alcohol, there are admonishments about having so much to drink that you make an idiot out of yourself.

Personally, I suspect that there were a lot of weak wines, so you could drink more without getting plastered. And I also suspect that there wasn't a whole lot of "grape juice", since keeping the stuff from fermenting is a bit difficult without modern refrigeration.

431 In the ongoing saga of the Deconstructed Motorhome, today I messed with the rooftop air conditioner. Got the unit out of its case, and set up on two pieces of 4X4 on the ground. Put power to it. Fan came on, compressor didn't. Started disassembling the switch panels, making a wiring diagram and truth tables for the switches as I went.

Discovered that the temperature control was stuck in "heat" mode (the unit had a resistance heater in the lower plenum, which was missing). In "cool" mode, the temperature control was supposed to make a connection between the white line wire, and a yellow wire going to the motor control box. So I made up connections again, got the fans running, and touched the connector on the yellow wire to a bare terminal on the yellow wire. "Click", the compressor started, and the yellow wire flash-welded itself to the terminal. But the compressor kept running. And the fan was blowing cold. And was it ever blowing cold! I placed my fingers in the airstream beneath the unit for a quarter-minute, and it was all I could handle. They were about to freeze.

I'm going to haul this puppy down to the casa in Arizona. Set it on a metal stand about a yard off the ground, and run ducts from the air-handler end to whichever room I want it to cool. Put the original plastic cover back on it to protect it from the elements. I took the cover off the thermostat, and was able to make it work again, but I will probably buy a new domestic-style A/C thermostat to use with it.

518 When I say "food culture" I mean one where food - quality, variety, a distinctive cuisine - is actually a big part of the culture and life. Not mostly just fuel. And is of a quality that much of the world adopts parts of it once they've been exposed to it.

Vietnam. Mexico. France. Italy. China. Thailand. India.

Vs. Russia, Ukraine. Much of central Europe. Much of central Asia. Most of sub-Saharan Africa. Actually, with some asterisks, much of central America and South America.

Even the least exciting cuisines have a few solid dishes. But you'd be hard pressed to keep up the excitement past that.

Ah. Did the RV have a generator? That could be handy.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at May 13, 2016 12:24 AM (RrDm2)

Yeah, it had a 6kW Onan genset, with remote electric start, the whole deal. Gasoline-burning, of course. It was a funny deal. Vehicle was sitting on land owned by two brothers. It had been parked there 10 years ago, or more, by a friend of the brothers, who was hiding it from his wife in a messy divorce. Well, that became ancient history, and owner of the motorhome, when urged to come get it, said, "eh, the mice have been in it, it's ruined, take what you can get for it."

So brother #1 is canvassing for people to come haul this thing off his land. I spoke up, and got the nod. Brother #2 says, "Hey, I want that genset out of it. I have a use for it." I said, "no problem, I already have one like it."

So, time comes for me to haul the damn thing home. Go up there, on a chilly day, with some brake fluid to see if I could the brakes on the darn thing to work. No luck there. But I also crawl under the genset, uncouple pipes and wires, and prep it for removal. Brother #1 comes along on his quad, and hitches onto it, and drags it out of its slot, and it plops down onto an old tire I placed there to catch it. Slick as can be, and no damage at all.

Several days later, I tell brother #2, "your genset is sitting up there on an old tire, and I will get you the control panel out of the RV in a few days." He then says, "you know, I was too hasty. I really don't need it. Go ahead and take it yourself." Brother #1 pipes up, "you know, that so-and-so **** never paid me any storage for that thing, for ten years. So give me a hundred bucks, and we're square."

So I ended up giving him a C-note, and an extra Cat battery I had kicking around, and had little use for. I'm happy, and they are happy.

I suspect that there are, actually.

Young kids will occasionally make comments about wishing they were the opposite gender, not realizing exactly what that entails. If the kid has reasonable parents, then he or she gets chided, and the parents explain why that isn't the same as wanting to be a fireman.

But if the kid has a couple of idiot SJWs for parents...

End result is a kid who's completely gender-confused by the time he or she hits high school, and is in desperate need of psychiatric help instead of "supportive" adults.

Ads in another language have been around for a *long* time. If we're talking online, then presumably a wire got crossed somewhere in the targeting, and someone thinks that you speak Spanish. If off-line, then they're aimed at a Spanish-speaking community near where you live.

I sometimes get hit by a bunch of them on the website that handles one of my e-mail accounts. It's currently showing English-language ads, though. And given that I live in LA County, it's an odd day when I *don't* see a Spanish-language ad in the real world. Or Chinese-language.

602 The second fellow, not sure his name said, "The left agrees they want bigger government. They may not agree about how big it should be or how fast it should get there, but they all want to make the government bigger. On the right that is not the case. There are plenty of people on the right who are happy to expand government - who see a much more expansive role for it in some areas, and then there's the part that want s to drown it in the bathtub." - I don't agree that one side is unified and that the other isn't.

605 I'm assuming the speaker was a libertarian and putting things in a 'larger vs smaller gov't' perspective. IMO it's not that there are some on the right who deviate from a small gov't view and everyone on the left agrees about wanting a larger gov't. Most people are indifferent to the issue of 'bigger or smaller' and are focused on where they like less and where they like more. I think that's true on both sides.

Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at May 13, 2016 03:23 AM (iQIUe)

607 There's no consensus on the left that 'bigger is better.' There's just a coalition where individual factions are granted gov't action on their priority. For most of those involved, if a coalition with smaller government overall were to offer more for their particular priority, then they would prefer the smaller gov't. The right may not be unified behind a small gov't ideology but the left isn't unified behind a large gov't ideology either. They're only united in being self-interested.

On this day in 1960 hundreds of University of California, Berkeley students congregated for the first day of protest against a visit by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Thirty-one students were arrested, and the Free Speech Movement was born.

Actually the students who had pushed this through were members of an organization dedicated to doing away with capitalism (sound familiar). Yes, they were communists and it has since been learned that the campus unrest and anti-war protests of the 60s were financed by the Soviets though their Eastern Block subjugated countries.

"Transgender" is a Mental Illness and Should be Treated as such: Former Johns Hopkins Chief Psychiatrist

http://tinyurl.com/nu9gzew

"While the Obama administration, Hollywood, and major media such asTime
magazine promote transgenderism as normal," said Dr. McHugh, these "policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or
the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of
defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding,
treatment and prevention."
"This intensely felt sense of being
transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects. The first
is that the idea of sex misalignment is simply mistaken-it does not
correspond with physical reality. The second is that it can lead to grim
psychological outcomes."

698 Repeat of that BS 4th circuit ruling post:

568
Before we move on to today's news I want to comment on the link and item
that Y-NOT put in the sidebar concerning the attack on common sense
bathroom laws.

The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, which
holds judicial sway over the Carolinas and four other states, ruled last
month in a lawsuit filed by a Virginia transgender student that the
federal government has the right to define discrimination as it sees
fit. [Y-not]

That was a direct quote from the Charlotte
Observer which like all big city newspapers is a liberal rag that can
not be trusted. It took me a while but I was able to find a pdf file of
the written judgment of the court and the dissent. This was 69 pages
long and that should give you a hint as to how the liberals buffaloed
the court. I have noted during my long practice of following the courts
that the longer a written judgment is the more likely it is to be made
up BS. This one conforms to that quite well. Note that the appeal which
caused this to make it to the 4th circuit was to the lower court ruling
which denied the plaintiff an emergency stay of the local school
regulations which required this person who was born as a female to use
the female bathrooms and dressing rooms. The case was actually brought
by that paragon of liberal destruction, the ACLU.

The ruling
is a long diatribe of conflicting statements all made in legal jargon to
confound the average citizen. But you can boil it down to one thing;
the Title IX law which the complaint was based on failed to define what
sex means with regard to a male and a female. I suppose that the people
who wrote that massively crappy law passed in 1972 assumed that was
within the realm of historical common sense and when that POS law was
written it was.

But in the end, the majority of the court
ruled that gender identity by the plaintiff controlled what sex the
person was and despite the fact that they even referenced that the
plaintiff had a mental illness:

gender dysphoria, a
medical condition characterized by clinically significant distress
caused by an incongruence between a person's gender identity and the
person's birth-assigned sex.

They also openly admitted
that Title IX permitted the common sense arrangement of separate
facilities for males and females. But they disagreed with the lower
court ruling denying a stay. They hinted all over the fact that if left
to them they would have ruled that the schools should force the students
to have coed bathrooms, dressing room, etc. But they did NOT
rule that. They issued a three part order that was really nothing more
than sending the case back to the lower court to reconsider its ruling.
And I boil all of this down with one statement, the reporter who wrote
that newspaper article is a liar. Nowhere in this ruling did it say that
the federal government was allowed to define discrimination in any
manner it sees fit.

Sorry this got so long. If you wish to
read this POS ruling you may find it by Binging C.G. v Gloucester County
School Board. Now on to the news.

707 Random thoughts:

--The Left knows we are moving towards a "post-jobs" economy, and is deliberately trying to blow up the system via illegal immigration and increased minimum wage to force us to go to a universal dole/guaranteed basic income. In this sense, it is the same dishonesty as ever.

--My counter is that we should never pay people to just exist, for all that will happen is increased daytime TV ratings. As a counter--If you want money, go farm. Don't care how successful you are, you have to get a plot of land and farm, no matter how marginal.

--That is the future. Today--illegal immigration hits the more physically-oriented worker. Jobs that Progressives do are not usually heavily impacted--else they would be less well supported in their calls for amnesty. In this regard then, the failure of the Federal Government to protect blue collar workers access to domestic jobs as well as they have white collar is a violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th., and is a legitimate grounds for the affected blue collar workers to not feel themselves bound by the social compact, the contract not having been kept on the Federal government's end.

--the power of the purse is supposed to be used by a legislature to keep the executive in check, not by an executive to keep political opponents in check. What the administration is doing right now is, I feel, legitimate grounds for considering the social compact null and void. At some point, you have to have an expressed opinion of legislature to back you up, not an endless series of court opinions. It cannot be turtles all the way down; popular sovereignty demands the people bless it *before* it happens, not after, because you have worn them down.

--Finally, a rebellion of some sort is fully justified, and people do not deserve a future say if they do not do so in some way. Progressives will be quite happy to just rule you.

Really finally--right now, my one wish, if I could have one from a genie, would be to make the Disney company go bankrupt. I am tired of corporate bullies trying to veto legislatures, and nullifying the power of the people to set their own culture. We need to seriously change conditions of incorporation, and then we need to back up with guns the limits if the Progs continue to try to steer from behind.

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.

Here's a quick W.C. Fields anecdote:

Fields came up through show business the hard way, first as a juggler, then as a monologist and so on to the irascible, loquacious alcoholic misanthrope which became his final incarnation (and was, very much, the real man). As such, he knew what worked for his persona and what didn't, and he was very resistant to authors who thought they knew "W.C. Fields" better than he did.

Fields was shooting a movie one day - no matter which one - and, to people's surprise, ended the day on a jovial note. When asked what made him so happy, Fields smiled, pointing to a scriptwriter sitting nearby.

"This was a day to remember. I didn't say one word the sonofabitch wrote for me!"

And since, when people think W.C. Fields, they also think Mae West, here's Mae in 1936s Go West, Young Man, where her co-star was -

742 The GOPe is recklessly endangering its own majority by superfunding Barack Obamas radical agenda.

They gave Obama essentially a 250million dollar slush fund when the overfunded the bullshit Clearwater bill yesterday.

250 million is a lot of walking around money and is going to be used to try to steal the election and will also be diverted to fund things like refugee resettlement and other nefarious schemes of this lawless administration.

The GOP is now an existential threat to our
Country, our liberty and our very way of life.

They must be destroyed.

745 E pluribus unum does not mean diverse people making one country. It means many states making one country. It was our motto when the country first formed, when states were prickly and the population was homogeneous.

While true on the surface I think you underestimate just how "diverse" culturally the United States already was.

You had the New York(actual) Dutch

You had the Pennsylvania(actually German) Dutch

You had the Hugenots(Fwench) in South Carolina and North Carolina.

You had the f*c*ing Irish well everywhere.

You had the Scots in VA, NC, and NY.

Now you're correct I guess that it was "homogenous" if you only count "skin color"....unless of course you count the Natives and Blacks we are constantly beaten about the head over rhetorically.
