In other words, what causes stress is often the very thing we think is relieving our stress.

73 Willowed on the east thread.

But, since we're still talking Trump/Cruz....here:

I voted for Cruz and I would prefer him,

but I can tell you the exact moment when I thought-

"Okay, he's lost the race now."

It was when anti-Trump thugs started committing violence against Trump supporters because they didn't like what Trump was saying-

and Cruz blamed Trump.

That was a gift given to Cruz to stand and make a powerful statement about free speech-

but....Nope.

Cruz took the leftist's talking points and ran with them.

If you're going to run as Mr Principled Conservative, if you're going to run as Mr Constitution,

then you damn well have to stand in the fire, in public, and voice your strong support for free speech even if there is a political advantage in weasel wording.

When I heard his statement, my stomach just dropped and I thought okay, he's lost now-

becuz more than ideology, this go-round people want a fighter, someone who will oppose the usual nonsense by the Dims and the MFM.

I would've prefer a conservative ideologue who was a fighter, Cruz screwed himself out of that position.

So, now we have Trump.

YMMV.

But, Cruz is young. Like Nixon, he needs to take this loss and learn from it. Build up his contacts and political allies and come back stronger in 2020 or 2024.

97 The Marine Corps says it has begun investigating whether it mistakenly identified one of the men shown raising the US flag at Iwo Jima in one of the iconic images of World War II after two amateur history buffs began raising questions about the picture.

The Marines announced the inquiry more than a year after Eric Krelle of Omaha, Nebraska, and Stephen Foley of Wexford, Ireland, began raising doubts about the identity of one man. In November 2014, the Omaha World-Herald published an extensive story about their claims and Saturday was the first to report the Marines were looking into the matter.

99 I don't see how a "Swear Word Coloring Book" could be cathartic. Cathartic is screaming it out loud, once, and getting it out of your system. Quietly coloring in the word just drags it out and does nothing for your mood.

I have a coloring book too, hiding in my bottom drawer. It's Dover Editions' "Byzantine Fashions." By the time you finish coloring in all the jewelry and brocade, you've long since forgotten what was bothering you.

166 I read the VDH column before coming here.

My takeaway:

1. VDH is brutal in his criticism of some of his NRO colleagues. Yeah, Williamson, I'm looking AT YOU.

2. VDH's conclusion is rather limited. A Trump presidency would re-vitalize, at least to some degree, the competitive, Madisonian give-and-take between the three branches of government. A hostile press would guarantee a conversation between the executive branch and We The People. After eight years of one-party rule, and by "one-party" I mean the Washington DC Party, that would be a relief.

3. #60's excerpt of this part: "The Trump supporters have seen plenty of politicians with important agendas, but few with the zeal to push them through; at this late date, they would apparently prefer zeal without agendas to agendas without zeal." is spot on.

178 "$2 billion in free advertising."

Donald Trump earned his advertising (as I read elsewhere) because he was willing to talk to anybody in the media at any time. He made himself available to them and took the risk that others were not willing to take.

Ted Cruz put together the perfect orthodox political campaign and I really would like to see how he and his advisors game-planned this, because it really was a thing of beauty. Donald Trump had a completely unorthodox campaign that was perfect for his style and his strengths.

I cannot see Ted Cruz going into an interview, off the cuff, and speaking to a reporter about whatever crosses the conversational stream.

I cannot see Donald Trump sticking to a series of pre-tested talking points, each word carefully selected so as not to cause any damages.

and this is one of the most frustrating parts to me.

This is the reason why Trump's detractors compare him to Mountain Dew Camacho. Sure he has swagger, but there is no substance behind the swagger. And people want swagger without substance? Seriously?

The most I can make of how the Trump folks I know look at this is that it's sort of a "he'll provide the swagger, we'll handle the substance" thing. At least some folks are looking at him the way I've regarded Obama--a battering ram to open the way for others to get the real work done.

Trump hasn't said but 500 words about policy in the entire primary, because getting into the weeds on policy is not a winning play against senators, governors, and political operatives with whom your own views closely align. No point in getting into an argument about whether having a 85% Conservative Score is better than having an 83% Conservative Score. What he did was differentiate himself and appeal to populist anger - by any means necessary.

When running against a big-government arch-liberal with legal and financial skeletons in her closet and 30 years of high negatives, policy will become his strong suit. He can largely abandon the bully identity, put on the green visor, and start asking questions - something Hillary simply cannot handle. Prepare to hear lots of cackling between July and November. He will win over every conservative and make liberals question their whole political identity.

The left must answer. The right, whose members are either complicit or lack spine, has been rejected in favor of an appropriate agent.

Hmmm-no.

He seems to have an outline of where he wants to go, but the details he leaves to be filled in as events occur. He is not as scripted as consultants and advisors have made candidates over the past few years.

I put the ultra-scripting down to the requirements of donors wanting certain things for their money, pressure groups wanting certain things also, and the tendency of lawyers to want to leave nothing to chance. The flexibility disappears and when something comes in that you have not planned for a lot of campaigns waste time offering canned responses before getting something useful in place - usually too late.

As a female, I can't even begin to tell you how loathsome this is to me. To call Bill Clinton's sexual predations "dalliances" is so loathsome that I'm tempted to say the GOP *is* waging a war on women. Fortunately, I'm stronger than the devil in this regard and I can get to the point where I say that Our Betters in the Uniparty Political Elite are waging a war on non-elite women. He lets Jeff Sessions write his immigration plan, then he contradicts it the very next day after it is unveiled.

His advisors write a tax plan, which is basically "Bush tax cuts on steroids". Not exactly original.

His health care plan is basically a regurgitation of conservative talking points from the past 30 years. Which is again contradicted by his public statements about wanting to nationalize health care.

273 One of the things that nags at me concerning Trump is the fact that so many are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to policy issues. I quite honestly don't know where he stands on issues that are important to me. Of the policy issues I HAVE heard him address, I simply don't believe him. (Example: Abortion. No, I do not for a second believe what he says about being pro-life).

It seems eerily similar to 2008 when a media-savvy non-entity became the nominee, then President, because people simply saw in him what they wished to see. He was so vague - he could be whatever you thought he was. People wanted change. Well, they got it.

Trump's run seems very similar to that. "What does he think about such-and-such?" I don't know. He said this, Then he said that. Then he said nothing at all. Blank slate. No voting record. Past decisions point to him being a NE liberal. Democrat, even. But hey! He's going to bring Change! Good enough!

We need to learn to have disagreements without being disagreeable. To have disagreements while respecting human beings on the other side. Earlier today over thirty people were arrested at one rally. But in any campaign responsibility starts at the top. Any candidate who is responsible for the culture of the campaign. And when you have a campaign that disrespects the voters, when you have a campaign that affirmatively encourages violence, when you have a campaign that is facing allegations of physical violence against members of the press, you create an environment that only encourages this sort of nasty discourse.

Well, you're just going to dismiss it out of hand because as a republican you're addicted to being disappointed and feeling like a tragic hero that the world just doesn't get, and also you're smarter than me, but I'll try.

Your whole view of DJT is predicated on the idea that he's a lucky idiot. That this man who has thrived and prospered in real estate/construction, show business, and global investment for 50 years did it all on a fluke, that he's blundered his way into success for every reason, any reason, or no reason at all except his own media savvy and cutthroat business instinct.

You can't get over the bombast, the stupid hair, the weird and disjointed speech, and the cheap decadence (en espanol se llama esta preocupaccion "estetica"). He can't effect policy specifics until he's president. Until then it's a PR game. He's winning.

Our society is decadent and depraved. And it has seeped into our ideology along with everything else. In a country where illegal immigrants have a right to free healthcare, where sharia cannot be publicly criticized but Christians can be summarily fired for a verbal misstep, where gender is a social construct and paying back a loan is patriarchal oppression, common sense is ugly and loathesome. The hour is late. And yes, I'm saying you have internalized this. We argue the opposite side of the liberal argument, instead of rejecting the premise of the argument itself. You must reject the comfort of mainstream conservatism. It is the other side of the liberal coin. We've been Punch to their Judy. I, for one, won't be anymore.

Trump keeps doing exactly the right thing for each situation. Not to fit an ideological profile, as you would like to see, just to win at the polls. I can't explain it, but it's undeniable. I trust that he'll continue to do so. And that he'll do it against Hillary as well. And if he does, he will have defeated both the houses of Bush and Clinton. And then anything will be possible. Maybe even balancing the budget and paying off the debt.

Politicians lie on the campaign trail about specifics, but they can't hide who they are. Obama told us he wanted to "fundamentally transform America." Trump wants to make America great again.

It's ok guys. He's on our team. We're going to defeat the left, just when victory was within their grasp. And we're going to do it together.

The Speaker

The Audience

Trump has an apolitical persona, a simple, robust message, and his audience is every American citizen.

Cruz has a trial lawyer/social conservative persona, an intellectual, complex message which requires heavy lift on the part of his listeners, and his audience is committed conservatives.

I like Cruz, but Trump represents a special opportunity to widen the republican tent and lure people away from leftism, both by personifying an apolitical nationalism and shining a light on the left (because let's face it, the LIV does not have Ted Cruz soundbytes delivered to him. First of all, your view of Trump as a genius businessman is incorrect. Trump is a media figure. He has been a "reality star" since before there was reality television - since before you were born. His fortune (much less then he claims) is not predicated on wise deals and sound fiscal management but on doing outrageous things to stay in the tabloid press and then licensing his name. He is a Paris Hilton, a Kardashian, both of whom have done very well out of the same kind of media exposure and licensing. You are voting for his character on the Apprentice, not anything that is remotely real.

The primary reason he is winning is because of constant media coverage - again, his forte as a tabloid star. You have convinced yourself he is brilliant, which means everything he does is brilliant, even if its clearly moronic. This is the cult of personality. It is voting for a man, not for ideals. And it is toxic.

The idea that you say Trump wants to "Make America Great Again" and believe it and then turn around and accuse opponents of basing opinions on "aesthetics" is absurd.

Posted by: Barb the Evil Genius at May 03, 2016 11:37 AM (FQKBL)

Barb, not to be picky, but Traficant is spelled with one f, not two.
Jim Traficant was the Mahoning county sheriff when the steel industry had collapsed and the economy of Youngstown fell to levels rivalling Islamabad's. He refused to serve foreclosure notices. He arrested what was left of the mobsters that remained in the area, once a big deal in Youngstown because of the tremendous wealth in steel and auto manufacturing in the area formed by Pittsburgh and Youngstown. He also managed to beat a racketeering charge from the Feds' while acting as his own attorney. He became a folk hero. He was going to go to Washington and change things for the area.

Yes , he was a democrat who voted with the Republicans a lot. He was punished by the Democrats by not being given committee assignments.

Of course, as time went on , he eventually was arrested , charged, removed from congress and then sentenced for taking campaign contributions for his own personal use.

The only thing I see in common with Traficant is the lack of party loyalty that helped endear him to the populace. The populace of eastern Ohio, which eventually decided the shenanigans and prison record were enough, and they did not vote him back into office. He was running a second time , the first time from prison and the second time after release.

He got 15% of the vote, including while he was in prison.

403 Ted Cruz's dad only knocked the wind out of JFK. JFK died when he got his head stuck in a jumbo sized can of Campbell's Pork & Beans while Prince used him as a size queen.

Blago. Although DT wins with his cadre of old guy cronies all sporting the improbably-colored pompadours.

Posted by: mustbequantum at May 03, 2016 11:58 AM (MIKMs)

412 The primary reason he is winning is because of constant media coverage - again, his forte as a tabloid star.
Posted by: person at May 03, 2016 11:51 AM (mFkVC)

I'm convinced he's a media savant and he's not an idiot, not that he's a genius. It wouldn't take a genius to run circles around literally any Republican. They're beta, bowtie wearing country club twits, without exception.

You're the one who believes in Magic Trump, the liberal stalking horse, hoodwinking the voting public and paving the way for Hillary Clinton, his every word a magic lie, his only goal the destruction of America. It's hilarious.

My enemy is the global socialist left, not republicans who don't meet my standards. I've been trying to convince everybody to get aboard this train not because I care about Trump but because I despise socialists and this is our best and most likely last opportunity to stop them. With leftist institutions exposed conservatism can flourish again, and only then.

Posted by: person at May 03, 2016 11:51 AM (mFkVC)

So Trump has not actually been involved in the day to day running of Trump Luxury Real Estate? He hasn't built buildings, rehabbed existing buildings, built and purchased golf courses, developed and managed hotels, built and managed casinos, rehabbed and managed the ice rink in NYC, run the Miss USA pagent, developed and run "The Apprentice" which broke the ground for future shows such as The Profit, and Shark Tank, etc.

He hasn't done any of this. No involvement whatsoever. Figment of the imagination of all the government officials, here in and numerous foreign countries, and business people who have all been involved in transactions and construction with him and his company.

416 When did every form of media become left-wing propaganda?
---------------

I loved Walter Cronkite. I loved his TV show, "You Are There" which recreated historical drama. I trusted him completely.

But I think it was 1968 after the Battle For Hue where Cronkite said, "This War Is Lost!" or words to that effect. That was the beginning of the end of my love for Uncle Walter.

So then it was Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, and Ted Koppel. For a time. Until 1972, 444 days of America held hostage, and finally Somalia for the children.

Posted by: person at May 03, 2016 11:57 AM (mFkVC)

Because that is what he's said he'll do and that's why people are voting for him. I've said it before: it is just as important that the voting public embraces conservative ideas as it is that a candidate puts them forward. People want law and order, they want a strong economy, they want our military to kick ass, and they don't want to be apologetic about it.

This is the whole thing about Trump: if he can be trusted to do what he says he'll do... is he still a bad candidate?

And that's why I call Trump opposition aesthetic.

Posted by: Ghost of kari - certified sidebar at May 03, 2016 12:03 PM (xuouz)

418 Yeah, but the Lie made it halfway around the world again. Until people are held liable, (either criminally or in civil courts depending on the circumstances), for making false claims like this, the Left will continue to win. [krak/t]

Are you saying you want to...open up the libel laws?

No, I don't believe Trump is a "liberal stalking horse" at all (although if he was, I can't see how he'd behave any differently).

You still haven't actually explained WHY you think Trump is on "our team," since you dismiss everything he has ever said as PR at best or aesthetics at worst.

Would Trump's tactics work for anyone else? Anyone who wasn't a trash journalism star?

By the way, if the key to victory is smearing your opponent in the most absurd, despicable rumors, should Cruz be shouting about the CERTAINLY FALSE Trump-Epstein rumors? If Dad's are fair game, should Cruz go after Trump's unsavory Papa? or would that not be the way to win the PR game?

Posted by: person at May 03, 2016 12:05 PM (mFkVC)

424 If Cruz loses today and the race is "done" (even though Trump still will not have made the number of delegates that he needs, and even though there may be challenges to his delegates on the convention floor), I will cast my primary vote for Cruz and then join the libertarian party. I will not be associated with a party that chooses Donald Trump as its nominee.

And then I will hunker down through the next four Hillary years, resign myself to a liberal supreme court for the next thirty years, and hope that one day the country comes to its senses.

428 More like four years of "you Trumpkins gave us Hillary!!!" and I'd be willing to bet on that meme outpolling your predicted meme, CJ.

And I think it says alot about you TDS suffers that virtually all the MFM equating Trump to Hitler and there being plenty of anti-Trump commenters here (BTW a bunch of them admit they're for Rubio and other RINOs) including all of the cobs and Ace that you only see his supporters in the comments sections here and elsewhere. That's messed up.

Posted by: andycanuck at May 03, 2016 01:04 PM (f4AGl)

429 What amazes me is that there are still some people here who believe Ted Cruz could win in a general election.

Even with all the evidence that he would be beaten like a baby seal.

Why would someone want to insure a loss?
