I grew up with a deaf neighbor, who also could not speak, and the challenge to effectively with only grunts and scribbled notes to communicate is real.

I would've prefer a conservative ideologue who was a fighter, Cruz screwed himself out of that position.

But, Cruz is young. Like Nixon, he needs to take this loss and learn from it. Build up his contacts and political allies and come back stronger in 2020 or 2024.

Everything went perfectly! A week in Dublin and I can say it's people and it's history are incredible. Always helpful and welcoming. You'll have a great time. The Irish day starts at about 8am, the Temple district nightlife starts about 530, the bars close about 11.
There's an organic coffee shop on O'Connell, just south of the Gresham Hotel, Go there about 7:15. Get the filtered coffee and a warm fruit scone with jam, set down at a table and watch the town wake up. Some of the best mornings ever, and the barista girls were always pleasant too!

That's awesome, and I'm envious! I would like to say I'll be back there but I don't know. Life is short. We drove to Cork City one day ourselves. Stopped along the way here and there just to get out and see. I know we missed a lot of what Ireland has to offer but what we took in was grand.

My takeaway:
1. VDH is brutal in his criticism of some of his NRO colleagues. Yeah, Williamson, I'm looking AT YOU.
2. VDH's conclusion is rather limited. A Trump presidency would re-vitalize, at least to some degree, the competitive, Madisonian give-and-take between the three branches of government. A hostile press would guarantee a conversation between the executive branch and We The People. After eight years of one-party rule, and by "one-party" I mean the Washington DC Party, that would be a relief.
3. #60's excerpt of this part: "The Trump supporters have seen plenty of politicians with important agendas, but few with the zeal to push them through; at this late date, they would apparently prefer zeal without agendas to agendas without zeal." is spot on.

Donald Trump earned his advertising (as I read elsewhere) because he was willing to talk to anybody in the media at any time. He made himself available to them and took the risk that others were not willing to take.
Ted Cruz put together the perfect orthodox political campaign and I really would like to see how he and his advisors game-planned this, because it really was a thing of beauty. Donald Trump had a completely unorthodox campaign that was perfect for his style and his strengths.

Does this refer to the "other" flag-raising photo taken at the time? It had a slightly different cast of characters.
Also, the photo is referred to as "iconic" in the news snippet you quoted. Iconic, yes, but that sort of understates things. I believe it's still the most published photo in history.

The most I can make of how the Trump folks I know look at this is that it's sort of a "he'll provide the swagger, we'll handle the substance" thing. At least some folks are looking at him the way I've regarded Obama--a battering ram to open the way for others to get the real work done.
I have no idea how accurate this is or how it may work out in practice, other than to see that in the case of Obama, it turned out damned effective.

Trump hasn't said but 500 words about policy in the entire primary, because getting into the weeds on policy is not a winning play against senators, governors, and political operatives with whom your own views closely align. No point in getting into an argument about whether having a 85% Conservative Score is better than having an 83% Conservative Score. What he did was differentiate himself and appeal to populist anger - by any means necessary.
When running against a big-government arch-liberal with legal and financial skeletons in her closet and 30 years of high negatives, policy will become his strong suit. He can largely abandon the bully identity, put on the green visor, and start asking questions - something Hillary simply cannot handle. Prepare to hear lots of cackling between July and November. He will win over every conservative and make liberals question their whole political identity.
The left must answer. The right, whose members are either complicit or lack spine, has been rejected in favor of an appropriate agent.

He seems to have an outline of where he wants to go, but the details he leaves to be filled in as events occur. He is not as scripted as consultants and advisors have made candidates over the past few years.
I put the ultra-scripting down to the requirements of donors wanting certain things for their money, pressure groups wanting certain things also, and the tendency of lawyers to want to leave nothing to chance. The flexibility disappears and when something comes in that you have not planned for a lot of campaigns waste time offering canned responses before getting something useful in place - usually too late.

As a female, I can't even begin to tell you how loathsome this is to me. His advisors write a tax plan, which is basically "Bush tax cuts on steroids". Not exactly original.
His health care plan is basically a regurgitation of conservative talking points from the past 30 years. Which is again contradicted by his public statements about wanting to nationalize health care.
His "policy mind" is basically "telling conservatives what I think they are wanting to hear, while trying to dodge the hard questions by making some outrageous statement that gets everyone talking about that instead of my own lack of understanding of anything substantial".

It seems eerily similar to 2008 when a media-savvy non-entity became the nominee, then President, because people simply saw in him what they wished to see. He was so vague - he could be whatever you thought he was. People wanted change. Well, they got it.
Trump's run seems very similar to that. "What does he think about such-and-such?" I don't know. He said this, Then he said that. Then he said nothing at all. Blank slate. No voting record. And then tonight, as violence broke out, the rally was canceled all together. Now, the responsibility for that lies with protesters who took violence into their own hands. But in any campaign responsibility starts at the top. Any candidate who is responsible for the culture of the campaign. And when you have a campaign that disrespects the voters, when you have a campaign that affirmatively encourages violence, when you have a campaign that is facing allegations of physical violence against members of the press, you create an environment that only encourages this sort of nasty discourse.

Maybe even balancing the budget and paying off the debt.
Politicians lie on the campaign trail about specifics, but they can't hide who they are. Obama told us he wanted to "fundamentally transform America." Trump wants to make America great again.
It's ok guys. He's on our team. We're going to defeat the left, just when victory was within their grasp. And we're going to do it together.

I'm not particularly depressed in regards to Cruz. I haven't really been emotionally invested in this campaign since Walker, then Jindal dropped out. The rest? Meh. What I am depressed about is the condition of our country. It makes me weep that my grandchildren will not grow up in the America that I did. Trump has an apolitical persona, a simple, robust message, and his audience is every American citizen.
Cruz has a trial lawyer/social conservative persona, an intellectual, complex message which requires heavy lift on the part of his listeners, and his audience is committed conservatives.
I like Cruz, but Trump represents a special opportunity to widen the republican tent and lure people away from leftism, both by personifying an apolitical nationalism and shining a light on the left (because let's face it, the LIV does not have Ted Cruz soundbytes delivered to him. Quite the opposite).

First of all, your view of Trump as a genius businessman is incorrect. Trump is a media figure. He has been a "reality star" since before there was reality television - since before you were born. His fortune (much less then he claims) is not predicated on wise deals and sound fiscal management but on doing outrageous things to stay in the tabloid press and then licensing his name. He is a Paris Hilton, a Kardashian, both of whom have done very well out of the same kind of media exposure and licensing. You are voting for his character on the Apprentice, not anything that is remotely real.
The primary reason he is winning is because of constant media coverage - again, his forte as a tabloid star. You have convinced yourself he is brilliant, which means everything he does is brilliant, even if its clearly moronic. This is the cult of personality. It is voting for a man, not for ideals. And it is toxic.
The idea that you say Trump wants to "Make America Great Again" and believe it and then turn around and accuse opponents of basing opinions on "aesthetics" is absurd.

Jim Traficant was the Mahoning county sheriff when the steel industry had collapsed and the economy of Youngstown fell to levels rivalling Islamabad's. He refused to serve foreclosure notices. He arrested what was left of the mobsters that remained in the area, once a big deal in Youngstown because of the tremendous wealth in steel and auto manufacturing in the area formed by Pittsburgh and Youngstown. He also managed to beat a racketeering charge from the Feds' while acting as his own attorney. He became a folk hero. He was going to go to Washington and change things for the area.
Yes , he was a democrat who voted with the Republicans a lot. He was punished by the Democrats by not being given committee assignments.
Of course, as time went on , he eventually was arrested , charged, removed from congress and then sentenced for taking campaign contributions for his own personal use.
The only thing I see in common with Traficant is the lack of party loyalty that helped endear him to the populace. The populace of eastern Ohio, which eventually decided the shenanigans and prison record were enough, and they did not vote him back into office. He was running a second time , the first time from prison and the second time after release.
He got 15% of the vote, including while he was in prison.

I was depressed, but now I've just accepted the fact that we are more than likely looking at Hillary as President. Who knows, maybe it will bring the burning times sooner. On a positive note after Trump loses to Hillary I won't have to listen to all constant Trump Love.
