I loved the NY Post's Trump endorsement. Paraphrasing "he's crude, rude, wrong on the issues, but we'll support him and hope he pivots."

I find it interesting that Trump's #1 issue is building the border wall and deporting illegals, yet he's supported by one of the biggest open borders shills there is: Rupert Murdoch.

What does he know that the rest of us don't?

Daughter is home for my "surprise" birthday party which really is a surprise dinner to celebrate my in-laws' upcoming 60th wedding anniversary. Wheels within wheels and all that.

Apparently the missus and I are now "crochety" and to refer to a person as being "oriental" is equivalent to using the term "nagger". Lotsa eyerolls to be coming from me in the next 72 hours.

22 Anybody know much about owls? I saw one in the woods yesterday AM. Not native to the area, from what I could find.

It was perched on a log overlooking a vernal pool. He was a scruffy, grey lump, perfect for blending in with dead trees. No tufts or facial disk.

Depending on where you live, it could be a Boreal owl. They are mainly in the northern areas.

Posted by: Bruce at April 16, 2016 06:49 AM (ANxEu)

24 'Owls of New England" seem to include the snowy owl, which will spend the winter here, and the boreal owl, which is classified as an accidental visitor.

25 I'm just grumpy in the morning.

26 I've had owls for years in the neighborhood but only hear them at night and never seen them. If you had a visual just Google owls to see pictures.

Posted by: Skip at April 16, 2016 06:50 AM (Dpy/y)

27 Bruce, that was the closest one I could find, but I'm not certain. I had my cell phone, but didn't want the flash to go off. It was in hemlock and pine woods, as I recall, which doesn't get lots of sunlight near the ground.

Posted by: fluffy at April 16, 2016 06:54 AM (2hcmo)

28 If you go to allaboutbirds.org you can do a search on owls, it will come back with pictures of them along with their calls. You can't always see owls, but you can usually hear them at night.

Posted by: Bruce at April 16, 2016 06:56 AM (ANxEu)

29 Looking around a little the ones in my area I hear could be Great Horned owls by the calls, but need to look if there are other possibilities. Luckily the calls of different kinds are very different.

No. But I have seen and heard many. From snowy whites to barn owls up to gigantic great horned owls.

What is native is only as reliable as those who see them. It is there. Probably native.

46 Good morning you bunch of lugnuts.

From this week in 1944- EZ Dog Journals

The artillery duel continues, starting to tip in favor of the Allies.

Apr 13, 1944
Cooler today. Paul and I took the afternoon off and sat on a ledge by the sea. About the only conclusion we came to was we'd like to be home. That's only natural in this place. We also decided that we must be slightly off the beam. No normal person could ever stand it here.

Apr 14, 1944
Arty tried a new wrinkle today. A precision adjustment on three heavy guns. A P-51 adjusted the 8" howitzer with devastating effect. Those guns shouldn't fire for a while.

Apr 15, 1944
Precision shoots have now graduated to the 240's. Gerrys arty must be getting a bit on the touchy side. It's bad enough to have those things drop in helter-skelter but it must be literal hell to know that someone can see you and is adjusting right on the point where you are.
Smoke pots on the beachhead keep all the rear areas under a continual haze. Jerry tries to shoot back into it but since he can't see his results are somewhat ineffective.

Apr 16, 1944
Paul and I took a ride around the beachhead today. By 1 Armd, most of the Corps Arty positions and finally to 15 Obs flash and sound centrals. Little activity. I didn't even get to adjust a battery. Some of these days I will.

53 And blame the fact that they are out of their "normal" range on Global Warming/Cooling/Change

They mentioned Great Grey moving south in recent years due to decline in prey species.

A few years back, New England had a mast crop (acorn & nuts) crash. Rodent populations plummeted and birds of prey followed.

Thirty years ago, those illegal geese from Canada settled here. Maybe owls are the next wave.

56 I never heard the term mast crop."

That's likely due to the overuse of the technical term "a s...tload", as in "the good ol boys say there's a s...load of acorns, so squirrell hunting 'll be easy"

Oddly enough, (more MowDeGrass Tyson type science here) "climate" seems to have little impact on "mast" crops...

57 MS is now a permitless concealed carry state. Woohoo!

The Gubner Phil Byrant signed the law yesterday, effective immediately.

The usual whiners didn't like it, such as the Police Chiefs group and Everytown. But it's not really such a major change.

First, we had a law that considered your vehicle as an extension of your home, so you could carry a gun in your car. Loaded, concealed, whatever.

Our concealed carry permit requirements were always mild, merely requiring passing background check and paying a fee (no classes).

Open carry was the next move, allowing guns to be worn in public with no permit.

Then last year, concealed carry was allowed with no permit for guns carried in a purse or satchel; aimed mainly at allowing wymyns to protect themselves.

Now it's for everyone.

*I'm not a lawyer, check the laws yerself ya bunch of morons, before acting on any of this*

58 There are now no suspects in the Houston cop ambush of two days ago. They had one guy in custody, but have now cleared him, so back to square one.

Fortunately the cop is expected to recover.

It seems to me that attempted murder should be treated the same as murder. Just because you suck at what you do, you get a bonus of a smaller sentence?

You punch a man in the face, he falls down and hits his head and dies; it's clear you meant to hurt him, but not to kill him.

You shoot someone 6 times and slit their throat and they live; your intent was obviously to see them dead.

Posted by: GnuBreed at April 16, 2016 08:08 AM (gyKtp)

59 "MS is now a permitless concealed carry state. Woohoo!"

I've become a no apologies Constitutional carry guy myself. This is a good move by MS and it follows a relaxation of gun control laws in several other states.

I think gun owners need to prepare themselves, though. It's just a matter of time before the federal government declares private ownership of firearms illegal. Gun owners need to prepare themselves to fucking ignore that.

Posted by: Cloyd Freud, Unemployed at April 16, 2016 08:11 AM (eHpnh)

60 "Gun owners need to prepare themselves to fucking ignore that."

Finding alternatives could be important, too. I've been looking at flare guns with inserts. According to our federal gooberment, a flare gun is not a firearm.

61 59 I think gun owners need to prepare themselves, though. It's just a

of firearms illegal. Gun owners need to prepare themselves to fucking

Section 5 of the new carry law says this:

No federal executive order, agency order, law not enrolled by the
United States Congress and signed by the President of the United States, rule, regulation or administrative interpretation of a law or statute issued, enacted or promulgated after July 1, 2016, that violates the United States Constitution or the Mississippi Constitution of 1890 shall be enforced or ordered to be enforced by any official, agent or employee of this state or a political subdivision thereof.

62 "Commonly known as the Fuck Off, TFG, clause."

Yeah, I read that. States are trying all sorts of things to keep the feds from pre-empting their gun laws. I hope they work, but I'm not confident that they will.

Posted by: Cloyd Freud, Unemployed at April 16, 2016 08:37 AM (eHpnh)

63 Seems like "Owls of New England" should have opened for somebody, Back In The Day.

Other than the hoo, you'll never hear an owl, day or night. Only the short, sharp cry of their prey. Death machines. If they ever draw a bead on us, we're screwed.

Out in bald-eagle country with some birder types and yuuge spotting scope, I saw a Great Horned nest in the crown of a v.tall rotted-out trunk. Looky there, I say, looks like the owls moved out and raccoons moved into the nest. Look again, says the birder. The nest was lined with coon pelts, for comfort. Top of the chain.

64 Seamus, loved the book, as you know. Slightly OT, but I'm doing a lot of genealogy research and finding that military records are very helpful. Lots of draft registrations and a number of grave marker applications. But just came across two relatives who died in September and October of 1918 ... One in action and the other by disease. No antibiotics then, of course.
