Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (4-14-2016)"It was a large caliber gun. A .45," Payton said. "It was designed back during World War I. And this thing just stops people. It will kill someone within four or five seconds after they are struck. You bleed out. After the first shot (that struck Smith's torso), he took three more in his back." I am now the most miserable man living. If what I feel were equally distributed to the whole human family, there would not be one cheerful face on the earth. Whether I shall ever be better I can not tell; I awfully forebode I shall not. To remain as I am is impossible; I must die or be better, it appears to me. The matter you speak of on my account, you may attend to as you say, unless you shall hear of my condition forbidding it. I say this, because I fear I shall be unable to attend to any business here, and a change of scene might help me. If I could be myself, I would rather remain at home with Judge Logan. I can write no more. "An eye for an eye" is not a prescription for revenge. It is a limitation on the fallen human propensity to up the ante. It is a prohibition on escalation. The American Poor Are Not Moving to Opportunity Where people once picked up stakes and moved to where the jobs were they're now staying put and either retiring or going on disability or welfare. Which is bad in multiple ways. "A state typically returns to normal after an adverse shock not because employment picks up, but because workers leave the state," economists Olivier Blanchard and Lawrence Katz wrote in a 1992 paper. And it turns out that getting out of poor areas in search of a job makes a big difference to your kids as well: This paper provides new evidence on the effects of moving out of disadvantaged neighborhoods on the long-run economic outcomes of children. My empirical strategy is based on public housing demolitions in Chicago which forced households to relocate to private market housing using vouchers. Specifically, I compare adult outcomes of children displaced by demolition to their peers who lived in nearby public housing that was not demolished. Displaced children are 9 percent more likely to be employed and earn 16 percent more as adults. The unemployed hellhole you know may be a comfortable one with friends and family but in the end it's still an economic hellhole that will eventually suck you and your children down with it. This is what Kevin D. Williamson was getting at in the article that everyone loves to hate on but almost no one has actually read. You can see the gist of it in this shorter non-paywalled post: Or, As My People Say, 'Git'.
Narcissism is Increasing. So You're Not So Special A 2010 study in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science found that the percentage of college students exhibiting narcissistic personality traits, based on their scores on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, a widely used diagnostic test, has increased by more than half since the early 1980s, to 30 percent. In their book "Narcissism Epidemic," the psychology professors Jean M. Twenge and W. Keith Campbell show that narcissism has increased as quickly as obesity has since the 1980s. Even our egos are getting fat. Adam Carolla: Who NOT to Vote For Twitter Kills Pro-Second Amendment Ad Campaign Dave Ramsey Slams Voters Who Think Politicians Will Solve All Their Problems In fact a lot of the stuff the mass market wants to see in the paper, as we know from a century's worth of market research has been pruned by elitists wanting to elevate the tone. This isn't surprising since more than 90% of people in the business are so far left politically from at least 50% of their market that the notion of balanced press coverage today is a bad joke. I don't know, but I get the impression that Mr. Kevin D. Williamson would score pretty low on that "bubble score" thing. And he wouldn't know shit about how to fix any common household applicances, nor know the first thing about how to even change the oil in a car. If he even has one, or knows how to drive.
If you put alone out in the country, where he'd hear the sounds of the actual planet, and not the big city, he'd piss his little pants in fear. He'd be totally lost. In college, I learned that if didn't get out of the urban environment at least once every two weeks or so, I'd go batshit insane. I needed the smells and sounds of the country and all that. Now, I learned some people are just the opposite, those raised in those urbanish environments. Had a girl one time who couldn't stand being alone out in the "real world". I love when people talk about how the relocation of the poor out of Chicago out to the burbs was so positive for the poor. Has anyone seen what it did to the lives of those in the burbs who now suffer from more crime and lower property values? Not to mention the cost to tax payers. And don't forget this whole migration was headed by our Dear Leader who cut a deal with real estate developers who bought up the land where the tenements were and now have million dollar apartments. This is all so much bullshit. Leave them where they are and cut the welfare roles. Hold alderman accountable when they look the other way for gangs that help them win re-election. Get blacks to hold accountable other blacks who prey on their neighborhood.

Actually, boob size is another one of those things that are bass-ackwards.
Big boobs (natural of course) is correlated with higher intelligence by a bit. It's the same thing with blondes. Natural blondes have an average IQ of about 103.7, compared to the species-wide average of 100 (which it is defined to be, of course). Some butt, you know the nice shape from the side view we just love, and are hard wired (and I do mean hard) to like, correlates with higher intelligence, both of the woman and her offspring as well. The stereotypes come from well, likely women who want to be big-boobed blondes but are not naturally, and so fake it, because that's what men prefer. They may no longer have any value to Williamson and NRO, or ignorant blowhards like Erickson, but they exist and exist in large numbers. Had anyone other than Trump spoke out to these people, then the GOPe wouldn't be engaged in intranacine warfare because Trump wouldn't have broken 5 percent of the vote. I've been in their position and the memory is still very strong with me. Telling us that we need to expand the H1-B's and open the floodgates of illegals because of a "labor shortage" and "doing jobs Americans won't do" is especially galling. Ex-Im Bank, TPP, and "reigning in spending" doesn't make it with the shrinking middle class, nor does "praise Jesus and rent a U-Haul" I wonder what all that data and studies showed about the large number of people who moved and regretted it because they were no better off and alone in a strange town, or worse off than ever. I read an article a while back that was, well, disturbing. It was arguing that autism (among some other things) may be signs of some bad genes getting propagated. That is, it has characteristics of what you'd expect to see when bad genes were being propagated in the species.
Now, the source of that could well be modern medicine. We're keeping alive many, many individuals who would've died long before they could reproduce back the old days. The implications of that are just about unthinkable. And cold. But the way Mother Nature works, she is one cold bitch. There is no compassion there at all. It's hard, brutal, cutthroat competition where only the strong survive. If you lose the competition, you die, and don't reproduce. That's her program for advancing life. And we may be messing that up. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at April 15, 2016 12:02 AM (DW+jj) 159

Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die Episode IV: Insurance Woes
Phone rings this morning when I'm on my way to meet a client. "THIS IS XXXX, I'M SICK OF THIS GODDAMN INSURANCE, IT SUCKS!" "That's unfortunate, tell me what's wrong." "I had to pay $300 for a prescription!" "I'd be happy to look into it for you, let me call you when I get back to my office. " "*rant rant* I want that Obamacare! *rant rant*..OK" Now, I know this guy is on a limited benefit plan with a guaranteed upgrade option if catastrophic care is needed. He bought that plan because he didn't want to spend much money on premiums, and he "never went to the doctor". So I call him back when I get to the office. "What medicine is the prescription for?" " How the hell should I know? I'm not at home?" "Well, when you get home, call me back or text me the name of the drug." "OK" 9:45 PM, I'm watching the Caps/Flyers game when a text comes in. "*drug name*" What the hell, I grab my iPad and do some quick research, then text back: "Go to (XXX website) put your drug name in the search bar and it will give you a page where you can print out a discount card to get the drug for $40 at WalMart. Your insurance will pay $10 of that, so you'll be able to get your medicine for $30/month" *phone rings* "What's all this? Why do I gotta do all this complicated stuff?" I explain that it's simple, will take him all of 30 seconds to print the discount card. I further explain that since the ACA went into effect, there IS no good Rx coverage out there unless he's willing to pay a lot more per month. "Why didn't the insurance company tell me this?" Well, it's not their job, but that's the advantage of having an agent, I make it my business to know this stuff for my clients. " I don't care, I'm a busy man. I don't have time to fool around with all this crap. Get me some of that Obamacare" I tell him I'll check around and call him tomorrow. Fact is, he can't sign up for an ACA plan because of the limited open enrollment period, but even if he could, the cheapest plan he can get is $100 more per month and that one has a $6800 deductible before Rx is covered. To get any kind of decent Rx plan (and even that has a $500 Rx deductible and then a $35 co pay) is more than double what he's paying now. I wish I could. I'd dump his ass on the ACA and walk away so fast his head would spin. It would serve him right, because it's just too damn busy to take 30 seconds and print out a card on his computer. My Christian love doesn't hold for Lois learner or that alien who runs the IRS Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at April 14, 2016 11:53 PM (voOPb) So, an IRS story..... The fiancee and I jointly own our house. All the paperwork is joint, the mortgage is joint, da-dum-da-dum-da-dum.....except the 1098 for mortgage interest expense only has one box for SSN. The 1098 comes addressed to "Cthulhette and Cthulhu", but the SSN in the box is hers (she got to the signing ceremony 10 minutes earlier than I did). Because of speed and transaction costs, and continual IRS encouragement -- we elected on our returns one year to have refunds electronically credited to our accounts. Never do this, BTW. So, we file -- and the fiancee gets a notice saying, "we noted an error on your return -- you only took 1/2 the mortgage interest you were entitled to" and they refigured her refund and processed the increased -- and wrong -- amount into her bank account. Then, when we went to correct it, they wanted penalties and interest on the over-refunded amount. In theory, they could have put $10B extra into our accounts, noticed their own screwup, reversed the $10B, then wiped out our net worth with the 5% penalties and interest. Which is why I will insist to my dying day on filing paper returns and getting paper checks from those useless clueless error-prone assholes. Posted by: cthulhu at April 15, 2016 12:10 AM (EzgxV) 185

"An eye for an eye" is not a prescription for revenge. It is a limitation on the fallen human propensity to up the ante. It is a prohibition on escalation.
-- from the article Six Controversial Bible Passages the Skeptics Love to Hate-Explained Bullshit. It's a simple explanation of the concept of natural fairness. It's not exact but it indicates that one cannot expect to retain any rights or property that he has stolen from others. If you torture another then you can expect to be tortured, yourself. If you kill another then you can expect to be killed yourself. Etc. And it clearly states that you are in the right if you extract from some criminal whatever he did from you. Of course, this is just obvious stuff. Reciprocity is always fair. And, BTW, it is NOT escalation to expect equal damages PLUS an added amount due to the criminal actions of another. When one person decides to take another's eye, then only losing his own eye is not appropriate, since the criminal had the choice while the victim had no choice. For having this choice the criminal needs to pay an extra price. And the Bible does go into more detail on the extra fines that one must pay for criminal acts, aside from the restored property. Eye for eye is a good way to describe "tit for tat" strategy. I think Ace went on about this a few moons ago.
Imagine you're in the natural state, no rules, autonomous individuals competing. What is the best strategy? Well, you can have "saints". Those who never lie, never cheat, and are a perfect little angels. They get their asses kicked. Every damn time. Then you have the devils. They will lie and cheat and break the rules all the time. They always beat the saints. The best strategy is a tit for tat. If you come against a saint, you play like a saint yourself. If you go up against a devil, then you be a slightly badder devil. If the devil pokes your eye out so as to have advantage, then poke his eye out too. Now, it turns out the following. If everyone were saints, then the game would be optimum for everybody as a whole. But throw a devil in there, and he's gonna lie and cheat and use violence and make it the best *for him*, at the expense of the whole. By employing tit-for-tat, then, well, everybody may end up blind, but that is local optimum compared to one guy with eyesight being a tyrant over all the people he's blinded. Obviously Churchill bios (Manchester, at least) and his memoirs are on my daunting "to do" list, but in reading the first of the Ian Toll Pacific War trilogy I did come across Winston's typical daily alcohol menu during his long visit to the White House in January 1942.
Sherry before breakfast, scotch and soda before lunch, wine with dinner, French champagne and 90-yr old brandy before bed. Impressive. And speaking of Prohibition, I recall how the folks at Korbel winery in Sonoma explained that the Korbel brothers kept the place going during that period with the substantial help of brisk "medicinal brandy" sales. Can imagine "prescriptions" for that were pretty common. Posted by: rhomboid at April 15, 2016 01:24 AM (QDnY+) 283

Posted by: bruce at April 15, 2016 01:17 AM (3qS20) My family shares the same curse. We've got a lot of interesting groups flowing into it, some like the Redlegs and Cherokee standing out on the page as clear-cut examples of injustice... But when you get down to it, it's exactly that. Everything we've built here gets taken away by the government and their thugs. Eventually you have to wonder why we keep trying. To finish the last point I left hanging:
It boils down to this. You can sit down and be a victim, and let them "take care of you" with strings attached, or you can get up off the ground, dust off and try again. The reason we keep trying is because there's something in the American spirit, to which the Scots-Irish contributed a great deal, that demands to be free. That you can take everything we've got, and we'll just build it again, build it our way, and build it better. And if you take that, we'll build an even better one. It's a yearning to be free, mixed with the proper amount of spite for those who'd dream themselves our masters. Posted by: Cato the Rebel Without a Party at April 15, 2016 01:47 AM (J+mig) 291

His horse throws a shoe on the trail, so at the first little frontier town he comes to, he finds a blacksmith's shop to have the shoe replaced. As he rides up, he sees a large, sweaty, filthy man hammering on a piece of red-hot iron. The Lord sits on his horse, waiting to be served, but the blacksmith doesn't pay him any attention and continues to work his iron. Finally, the Lord, outraged to have been ignored this way by an obvious servant, dismounts, approaches the 'smith, and taps the man on the shoulder with his riding crop.
"You, man!" he barks, "Who is your Master! I wish to have a word with him!" I thought that myself at one time as well, but the story is stranger than you might think: Dolly herself says that the majority of her wealth does NOT come from her record sales, or from her theme park, or from her businesses, or from her acting, or from any of her own performances of her songs. No, instead, incredibly, she made most of her money from ONE single source: Royalties from Whitney Houston's rendition of "I Will Always Love You" from The Bodyguard. That version is the 7th-bestselling song of all time, worldwide. Dolly said that she made more from the royalties from that one cover version than all the rest of her entire life's musical career combined. Posted by: zombie at April 15, 2016 02:53 AM (jBuUi) 316

I went to the source, USA Today, to read about the Payton quote(s). That article was written by Jarret Bell, whose axe must have an exceedingly fine edge to it after all that grinding.
There's not one drop of investigation of Sean's claims. He grabs a few 'juicy' quotes from that 33 minute rant, dusts his hands, and hits print. He did at least touch on Sean's political leanings, which are, quote "I'm not an extreme liberal". Sounds sorta like "I'm not an extreme muslim" to me. Fuck Payton. I hear tell that they are working on journalism bots that can do the same job as ole Jarret here. Hell, I'll bet even money right now that the 600 series can outperform Jarret, rubber skin and all. "An eye for an eye" is not a prescription for revenge. It is a limitation on the fallen human propensity to up the ante. It is a prohibition on escalation.
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, that ye resist not evil: if a Syrian refugee gropeth thee on thy right boob, turn unto him the other also. Posted by: Gospel according to St Angela at April 15, 2016 03:29 AM (eJ40K) 323

The Scotch-Irish may woirk hard but many of them do not work to good effect. My German immigrant ancestors worked to pay off their mortgages as soon as possible and passed along thriving farms to their children. The Scotch-Irish, who have been on the land generations longer have always been more likely to pass on a load of debt. Not planning for the future seems to be an ethnic trait in Appalachia. That and the "blame the system" chip on their shoulder, which is very much like that found among urban blacks.

Item 1 -- Germany just passed a law that requires migrants to learn German or have benefits cut off.
Item 2 -- For Puerto Ricans at home, 91% do not speak English there. Item 3 -- In 1991, Puerto Rico passed a law making Spanish their primary language. Item 4 -- Puerto Ricans are US citizens, though they pay no US federal personal income tax. Item 5 -- Puerto Rico's unemployment rate is higher than Greece's. Item 6 -- We are about to bail out Puerto Rico to the tune of 'forgiving' $37 billion in debt through bankruptcy law, even though they are NOT eligible to use bankruptcy and many private individuals (holding tax exempt PR bonds) will be the ones taking the financial hit for this change in the law. You're going to defend the Williamson article? He didn't say it about people in general. He said it specifically about white people. He said it in about the most offensive way possible. What little truth there is in the article is swamped by his venom.
Displaced children are 9 percent more likely to be employed and earn 16 percent more as adults. I wouldn't be hanging my hat on a 9 percent increase in employment. If you take 100 kids and 10 ended up with jobs as adults, you either have 11 or 19 kids who get jobs as adults. Meanwhile you have the attendant problem of the others now creating a new hell hole. Everyone who needs a job could move and we still wouldn't have enough jobs. Posted by: WOPR - Nationalist at April 15, 2016 06:29 AM (n2GmV) 352

"Scots-Irish......scotch is whiskey."
Now that's what we say, but read old books, we called ourselves Scotch/Scottish. "Scotch (adj.) "of Scotland," 1590s, contraction of Scottish. Disdained by the Scottish because of the many insulting and pejorative formations made from it by the English (such as Scotch greys "lice;" Scotch attorney, a Jamaica term from 1864 for strangler vines). Scotch-Irish is from 1744 (adj.); 1789 (n.); more properly Scots-Irish (1966), from Scots (mid-14c.), the older adjective, which is from Scottis, the northern variant of Scottish. Scots (adj.) was used in Scottish until 18c., then Scotch became vernacular, but in mid-19c. there was a reaction against it. " Posted by: bruce at April 15, 2016 07:58 AM (3qS20) 361
