17 Did you catch that last sentence? Suffice it to say that the auction award process developed by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) appears to have been designed by the same individuals responsible for Healthcare.gov. Whether or not it was intended, what we've now got is a lobbied-up compromise that has resulted in a government price-setting scheme.

CMS figures it has overpaid close to a billion for DMEPOS over the last ten years, so it moved ahead with auction trials in various regions of the country. Although these trials were wildly successful in identifying huge savings, the losing incumbents claimed the process was unfair to them. Why? They claimed the low cost bidders (non-incumbents) had corrupted the system by bidding prices that were unsustainable. If that sounds like sour grapes, consider this: in fact, the auction rules established by CMS actually encourage low balling, because the low ball bidders understand the awarded price will actually be higher.

Eh? I've never heard of an apartment for sale unless you were buying the buildigs and becoming the landlord. I have seen apartments converted under a declaration of condominium and then sold as condos. Apartment units and condo units are built to different codes.

67 So, you're so disgusted with the GOPe and the Democommies, you're thinking about voting Libertarian, eh?

I voted Libertarian twice for President, both times in states where I knew to whom the state would unquestionably go, so it was a harmless "protest" vote. Back then, Libertarians were already kinda whacky, but not what they've become today. For example:

Will Coley is a Vice Presidential candidate, representing the Libertarian Party. He's running alongside Darryl W. Perry, the presidential candidate. He's not just a Vice Presidential candidate, he's this country's first openly Muslim Vice Presidential candidate.... director of Muslims for Liberty - a group that decries American exceptionalism, accuses the United States of war crimes, and espouses ostensibly anti-Israel ideology.... In Tennessee... expressed concern about proposed legislation to prohibit sharia... claimed that it was indicative of the hatred conservatives feel toward Muslims.... gave local talks promoting the idea that sharia doctrine is compatible with the U.S. Constitution and went so far as to falsely proclaim that Islamic legal theory influenced American law...

What strings she pulled, or what she did, I don't know, but she got her in one. And that moved her to the other side of the damn place. When I got there, I was carrying a little white bag full of stuff my mother wanted me to bring.

Well some idiot on the staff thought that was food. So said idiot cancelled her supper order, just on that assumption. And it took moving heaven and earth to get my mother a supper tray.

I head one of the nurses, big redneck woman, hollering, whining even, like some petulant teenager "Will you please bring Mrs. X some food!"

If you are interested in meeting people of the male persuasion, a gun show is an excellent place. There are basically NO women there, and from what I've been able to observe, men who like guns generally are conservative.

120 I think when the Libertarians quit pretending to be anything other than Dem-funded spoilers against the Republicans is when they ran a candidate against Murphy and "against" Polis in the 2010 Congressional election here.

Murphy was close to being a freakin' Ronulan. If the small-L libertarians wanted their guy, Murphy was it. Especially given where this was.

Ah, well, anyway, now Polis will probably be running against Nic Morse. (At least, I voted for Morse in the assembly today.) They'll have to run the photocopiers extra hard in Boulder to offset Morse's support.

129 I'm guessing all 3 days worth of kitty morphine wouldn't be enough for a human to even feel.

And is it just me, or are 85% of the people who work in health care lard asses? I've noticed this before, and now with my folks I've been in two hospitals and a nursing home, and it looks like 8 out of 10 of the nurses and staff are absolute obese porkers.

I mean rolls of lard straining against the scrubs and uniforms they wear.

I'm wondering what the deal is. Are they carefully following the official nutritional guidelines, which would likely do that. Or what?

The POS who murdered the UVA coed last year turned out to be a serial rapist-killer. Linked to one for sure (DNA) and several circumstantially.

Not that the press or university in C'ville were very interested in the case, considering that it more or less coincided with the Far More Important Story of Jackie Coakley's obviously bogus rape, about which they got hysterical.

207 You still cant defraud the buyer in an As Is house. There is also something about foundations. Some people I know bought an as is house and then found that the foundation was damaged. The sellers said they lived out of state and rented so didnt know about damaged foundation and therefore not liable bc they would not know. However, since the foundation had been previously repaired and I doubt the renters paid for the foundation to be repaired, the owners knew the foundation had sustained earthquake damage and did not disclose it as required by law.

208 "Did you see where Michael Oren called Bernie out to retract his blood libel?"

Oren brown-nosed the various figures in the Obama administration so hard and so unflaggingly that he probably still has to wear concealer to hide the permanent fecal stains above his nostril rims.

All of that self-abasement yielded precisely nothing. Obama and everyone else in the administration treated him and his country with total contempt.

At one point, with an impending international crisis requiring U.S.-Israeli cooperation, Oren had placed call after call to Hillary Clinton at State. Indicating the urgency. Total silence. No response whatsoever.

Then on one of her shuttle diplomatic tours of the Mideast, her plane stopped off in Tel Aviv, and Oren dutifully went to the airport to formally welcome her, and the first thing Hillary did was to say to him, "You never return my calls!"

Any normal person would have decked the arrogant bitch. Laid her out flat on the airport tarmac. Oren flashed his submissive beta-male grimace-grin and bent over to start brown-nosing her some more.

215 Just read the yahoo article on the UT student murder. The charging documents are posted with the article.

It says that they have surveillance video of Haruka walking past the homeless guy on his bicycle looking down at her phone. He then got off the bike, began to follow her and pulled out a "shiny object" from his bag. She walked along a trail next to a creek to go to her dorm. He was not seen for another two hours, then he returned back in view of the camera, carrying another bag and limping.

To all the ettes out there...this is situational awareness 101. Do not walk while reading your phone, etc. Look up, know what is in your surroundings. Do not simply ignore anything that looks slightly dangerous. Do not go to your car while another person, particularly a male is standing or fiddling with getting in his car close by.

What happened to Haruka should never happen to anyone. We have to do everything we can to prevent it, and that starts with seeing your surroundings.

The Falcon 9 landed autonomously on a tiny platform in a big ocean. It landed slightly off-center, but there was little room for error. If it was much farther off, it would have caught the edge and toppled into the sea.

The barge had to maintain a precise position, also autonomously, in order for the rocket to land safely.

256 >> Apollo was far more impressive. Look how far we've fallen
>> since then.

Apollo was brute-force by comparison. Go look at the Saturn V laying on its side in Florida. See that control box? A first-gen iPhone had more processing power.

Still, yes, miracles accomplished through sheer force of will and an amazing collection of brains fueled by $^6 and a few sidesteps and missteps and eventually LOR. Can't take that away from anyone.

I worked for Elon Musk once upon a time. Maybe I've said this before. Bright guy, struck me as not quite as bright as he thought he was, but once again force of will. And, damn, he took the $16M he got from Compaq to walk away from that startup and bought into what became Paypal and once he was seriously rich did he put it back into 'easy' software investments like the Google guys?

NO. He went and did hardware. Which is fucking HARD.

Ego, yeah, ridiculously so. He's on the mastheads as 'founder' at PayPal, SolarCity, Tesla and SpaceX, and neither of the first three are true. PayPal he bought into by getting the real founder entre' to some Sand Hill VC (and flipping his McLaren F1 into the ditch in the process). SolarCity was a simpatico investment in support of some fellow South Africans. Tesla he bought into, and almost destroyed, remolding the company into what he thought (probably rightly) it should be. SpaceX is his baby, from start to finish.

Sure, the latter three have gotten where they are due to various tax/subsidy/contract deals with Nasty Government. SolarCity's just one player out of dozens in the PV solar market. Tesla is where it is largely because of Arnold Schwarzenegger and AB32, but they've done brilliant product and the rules haven't been any different for them than anyone else, they've just done a much better job at gaming them. SpaceX plays on the same field with NASA and etc that ULA and the other space contractors do.

Elon's done the hard things, he's played the game according to the same rules as everyone else and so far he's done Great Shit, and I respect him endlessly for that.

257 If you want to see something, put "Apollo 11 Launch Camera E-8" in Google. That was a high speed camera right there at the base. It was slowed down and catches all the action in slow motion.

It starts at "ignition sequence begin", at T-8.9 secs on the countdown. That's when the gas generators are fired up that spin up the 20K HP turbo pumps on the five mighty F-1 engines on the first stage.

If you were riding that, at that point, the fun begins. At full thrust, those babies were burning 15 tons of kerosene and LOX per freaking second.

You'll see that might beast rise and the plume of exhaust. After she lifts off, the camera saturates from the brightness of the fireball for a few moments.

When they fire them, a massive water tank nearby was opened up, which dumped a deluge of cooling water into the exhaust trench and on and all around the launch pad. Without it, it would've slagged the whole launch pad and tower.

Just watch that, and you'll say "America, fuck yeah!". That was the last hurrah of the Greatest Generation. That was the America of old. It is not the lard assed pussies we've become.

Brilliant at the FTC, opening up e-commerce like Uber and stopping crony capitalism and net neutrality. Then after Dept. Atty. Gen. stint. he helped win Bush v. Gore.

As Solicitor Gen. in Texas, argued and won many conservative victories at the Supreme Court, including work on Heller 2nd Amend. landmark.

As Senator in stunning Tea Party victory, he sponsored 25 bills, shut down the Gummint over BomberCare, call Barky the leading state sponsor of terror for giving Iran 150 billion.

285 When the Space Shuttle was retired, NASA needed a way to send supplies to the ISS. The Russians, Europeans, and Japanese all have cargo ships, but they are only one-way. They can't bring anything back. Before they are cast loose, they are filled with trash and burn up in the atmosphere.

NASA provided some seed money to help develop the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft, which can land with cargo, such as science experiments. I don't have the numbers handy, but I have read that the total NASA investment in SpaceX is approximately the cost of ONE shuttle flight, around $1B.

Beyond that, NASA is paying SpaceX about $1.4B for 12 cargo flights. That is fee for services rendered, and is no different than paying UPS to deliver a package. It is not a "subsidy".
