Overnight Open Thread (2 Apr 2016)

I know some of you mentioned last night the geomagnetic storm that is hitting today due to the high speed solar wind stream, but it does not look good for aurora viewing outside of Alaska and Canada.

Iran Deal

Raise your hand if you are surprised by this? The Iran nuclear deal keeps changing. Meanwhile, TFG says a nuclear terrorist attack would 'change our world'. It probably would've been wiser to not make the deal with Iran then no?

Chicago

Ahh, life under Democrat rule. Chicago murders have jumped 71% so far in 2016.

News Bloopers

Spies Like Us

Perhaps more focus on spycraft and less on diversity and other BS is on order. The CIA's problem: subpar spies.

Baby Got Back

Is this seriously a thing now? 2,000 squats per day gave curvy twins four-foot butts.

Flying Chainsaw

I still like the flamethrower one better.

Vajayjay Beer?

This is an April Fools Day joke right? The world's first vajayjay beer just hit the market.

Animals Being Awesome

SMOD

How big does SMOD need to be in order to wipe out Manhattan?

17 From the last thread about my folks.

Thanks everyone. My mother is doing fine. Her surgeon decided to send
her to a rehab facility (nursing home) for a few days of physical
therapy, but I think she'll be back home. I think she could be home now,
but he wanted to make sure.

You know, nursing homes are
really depressing to me. Hospitals aren't so much, but nursing homes
are. They transported her there right after lunch, and when I went to
see her there, it really hit me. I saw her just sitting there, and it
was if there she was, my own mother, abandoned to her fate. I wanted to
just grab her and take her home as fast as I could, digging out with
wheels spinning and dust flying. I had to tell myself not to be silly,
it's just for a few days.

But boy, with my own mother like
that, and that depressing feeling I get in nursing homes, I had some
emotion wash over me fast and furious that I'd never really experienced
before.

It really surprised me.

21 Look, CIA does not WANT to succeed.

When CIA leadership says tacitly that diversity and friendliness to TG agents is more important than traditional fieldcraft and humint(which has already been under attack for 41 years) we are simply not going to have espionage coups.

The Farm is on board with the House of Mirrors deciding it'd rather try to spy on all Americans and then try to play "Captain Wizard" on engaging in forensic datamining of the grabs.

They have thus far not stopped ANY major event beforehand using these new sniffing regimens.

CIA wants to be able to spy on YOU through your dishwasher thanks to "smart houses"...that actual cloak and dagger shit is boring AND the few times it is exciting can get you killed.

It's funny that the media acts shocked that the Military and Civilian Intel orgs BOTH seem to have doctored the reports to minimize ISIS' gains and growth....

How in the fu*k can anyone be shocked?

The entire management structure of the Intel community is predicated on keeping the Democrat Appartchniks in the civil service happy and by extension the Democrat leadership when elected to power....so if Ogabe wants ISIS to be Jay-Vee how in the f**k will they ever be anything else?

And if your SES-3 wants to play "fuck the Bush admin" then by God any data needed to crap on the Bush admin is fed to the media.

We are an odd combination of Mandarin China and Potemkin Russia these days.

And then drank it.

74 My folks actually have some long-term care insurance, a special nursing home type of that. Decades ago, they saw the financial burdens with their own parents and aunts/uncles and decided to plan for it. Since they started so relatively young, the premiums weren't all that bad. It was just some yearly lump sum of so much.

As it is with my mother, Medicare will cover up to 21 days of such rehab. After that, I don't know if her secondary will cover anything, but that long term insurance would kick it if need be.

That's something for everyone to think about. Although I imagine BarkyCare has screwed it all up somehow anyway.

No, and I'm not actually going to use a winch at all, it was a whim when I was frustrated at being unable to find more reasonable choices in other areas.

For example, tiny rubber tank treads that can't do what I want, $10. Gigantic over-engineered monstrosities, $800. Inbetween.... umm, err... $200 used snowmobile treads that are 8 times too wide?

Having trouble finding small motors with all the relevant specs listed (especially torque).

Kind of not explaining the thing out of an abundance of paranoia as I might end up selling them.

156 I have to say that although I love animals and cats in particular, I can't bring myself to get one because of this and the cat box smell.

It's the knocking stuff off the shelf behavior (which I know they don't really do on purpose. Maybe). I have too much stuff that is fragile on shelves. I fear coming home to a holocaust one day with a cat in the house.

Interestingly, I don't think that cats let outside do this sort of stuff quite as much. But I could be wrong.

She has pictures of someone with a stapler in his ass.

168 95 The only 100 lb winches I could find were actually for crab pots.

They make 1/10 scale truck winches for RC cars, but, unlike RC gas motors, they are grossly underpowered.

I might be able to handmake one in the 100 lb range, but ultimately that's a clumsy way of doing what I need to do.

Or, I'm completely mis-reading you, in which case you might find a 100 lb. wench down at the local Bierhaus, ja?

208 Jinx, we can get Duke's here. I've tried it, and was underwhelmed.

Frankly, the Kroger's private label mayo is better even than the major national brands. Just the right amount of tangy-ness, where the Duke's was virtually dull, flat and without any spark to the flavor, whatsoever. Very smooth, creamy and spreadable, but it's to mayo, what bland, unseasoned and uninspiring "cafeteria food" in an old folks home is to Cajun cuisine.

Being a bit of a mayo addict, these subtleties matter to me.

Love a good BLT with just the right amount of mayo on the perfect, lightly toasted bread. We're talking condemned prisoner's last meal kind of good here, folks.

a. Don't go to a military hospital

b. If you are going to go to a military hospital, remember not to go to the one on the base you work at.

c. The respiratory therapist (me) shouldn't be asking you for the pager

d. Don't be surprised when the ER staff amuses themselves for several

236 Talk about a fun day. Brother in law comes over to help me clean up the fallen branches around the house from last month's ice storm. In cleaning up, we noticed that some branches fell on my elderly neighbors fence damaging it and a bench in their back yard. Because of how the limbs fell, I couldn't see the damage until we had cut away about half of the fallen limbs.

My reward?

60 mph winds tonight, should be fun to see how much more cleanup I will have tomorrow.

244 We prefer Hellman's Mayonnaise at Casa H. We did the grocery shopping today and they didn't have the size jar of Hellman's that fights correctly in the refrigerator door. Mr. H said he would get Dukes instead, but I told him it's never a good idea to switch your condiments at our age, just buy the smaller size jar.
How do men ever get along without a wife?
Posted by: ALH
--------------------

A. Dukes is less expensive.
B. The '1 Pint' Duke's is still 16 ozs., Hellman's is 15 oz.
C. 16 ounces of Duke's costs 90 cents less than 15 ounces of Hellman's

We can argue about flavor, but 'flavor' in the case of Hellman's is sugar, Duke's doesn't have it.

To each his own.

If it makes you feel any better, the D-Backs have lost AJ Pollock for the year with a torn elbow, the Dodgers are getting smacked hard by injuries, and the Padres suck but won't accept it just yet and go into a full rebuild. The Giants seem to be nursing some injuries too although they believe that no matter what the Even Year Charm will come through for them.

265 Mike Hammer. Agreed on the Hellman's being a sugary mess. Not only that, but it's got some weird kind of overly gelatinous viscosity which makes it less than graceful to spread it smoothly onto bread.

The Kroger's private label mayo has a bit of citrus tangy-ness, but not too much. It's a crisp, sweet/sour taste of the lemon that's in a good mayonnaise.

And it's that bit of "zing" that's missing from the otherwise high-quality Duke's Mayo.

But, going to far down the "zing" path, is the perdition that is called "Miracle Whip", which aptly named, can only be enjoyed by a gastronomical masochist.

306 Discovered a large wardrobe box in the storage locker was entirely my stuff and a few other boxes as well that I'd forgotten. How the hell did I ever have so many shirts? I know a lot of them came from trade shows but I don't recall having such an excess I had no place to keep them in the previous larger house. Yet they're in the boxes filled up in preparation for the move, when I had to decide what part of my wardrobe I needed immediate access to and what could be stashed. OF course, I didn't think it would twelve years before I pulled them out. I thought I'd either be dead or have worn out enough other shirts to pull some out of storage.

And so many had rarely been worn. I recall I had a period when I sought to enhance my appearance but because I'm so cold resistant and live in Southern CA, the number of days in any year where I can make use of a thick long sleeve shirt are very few. I admired my friend who were snappy dresser but they'd also be shivering if it got below 60F and act like they were in imminent danger.

Storing this stuff has just been too costly and so it's got to go. I try not to think about how much I spent on clothes that were hardly worn, along with so many ill-considered purchases.

310 Need some moron feedback.

As some of you might recall, I joined the ranks of the cyborg travesty of humanity about two years ago. So far so good, except for the one time one of the wires decided to detach.

But now it's pollen hell season here in Texas and like everyone this side of the bass and snappers I am coughing and sneezing like nobody's business.

Even with meds, the coughing got so bad that I've developed spasms in my diaphragm (the manly one under my ribs), and they have developed a new side effect: they knock my ass out. It's like turning off a switch. One or two good spasming coughs and I wake up face down on the keyboard or staring at the ceiling wondering how I got there. Last one scared the shit out of my wife: she says I just fell straight backwards with the my eyes wide open and lay there. I'm usually only out for a couple of seconds but come to thoroughly disoriented. I take my BP immediately after the events and it's usually up about 10-20 points.

I've run tests with the defrib and sent them to the monitoring company, but they haven't responded yet and didn't contact me after these started. Got calls in to my cardiologists but it's the weekend. Was wondering if this was something any of you were familiar with.

311 Real key is toasted sourdough with mayo mixed with pesto.

After that, the cheese, meat, lettuce and tomato is open season.

But all sammiches are wonderful. I've had Bologna with lays potatoe chips and mustard that made my toes curl.

Speaking of mustard, spicy mustard on ham or turkey. Do that.

Sorry for your Mom publius.

To what Molly addresses...in the last few yrs of my Mom's life my Dad spent every night in the rehab facilities she was in, sleeping in a chair in her room. He simply would not leave her.

Not everyone is capable of that, and he really shouldn't have as he had his own back issues but he just wouldn't leave her. Slept in a reclining chair for months so he could be nearby and make sure she was taken care of properly.

Which lead to some disputes, but they weren't going to mistreat/ignore her as long as he was alive.

I don't think they see jack on those tests. They saw nothing after that lightning *right* outside my window damn near knocked me out of my chair.

Sneezing changes the rhythm of your heart, which may affect the device (but shouldn't), and that could knock you out.

It also constricts blood flow, which, if you're a bit marginal, could knock you out in a few seconds, especially if you have a sneezing fit.

I have an ICD and had a horrible sneezing fit today, but I didn't pass out. Damn thing itches and aches, though.

You definitely need to go in and get tested. Maybe they can hook you up and blow pepper at you.

352 244 We prefer Hellman's Mayonnaise at Casa H.

Deborah says Duke's tastes like the local mayo she used to buy when deployed to Germany. She makes me buy it exclusively now.

I'd be reluctant to even broach the subject with a woman of the female persuasion.

The storage locker is shared with my mother and getting her to winnow down stuff has been torturous. So much of what I've had to pressure her about is not even her stuff. It's other people's stuff she somehow took possession of when they died or somebody tried to throw something out without driving to a dumpster ten miles away from the house.

I used to get tons of weird promotional items from tech and gaming companies who had me on their mailing list. I've lost count of the number of time I've come across one of these items years after I thought I'd thrown it away. Among the stuff I came across today was yet another collection of shoulder bags from shows like E3 and CES. Whenever a company like Nintendo had a press event to tout the latest product lineup the press lit materials would usually come in one of these nice bags with the company logo and perhaps some other goodies. It was great at the time but after a few years I had a lifetime supply of these things. Probably five for each one that got a lot of use and wore out. If I had need of such a bag on a daily basis it would be fine. I'd probably use up the lot within a decade, assuming I didn't continue to receive more of them.

But that isn't likely. Instead they're bulky items taking up room in a rented storage space. Whatever portion of the cost that can be attributed to them has long since negated the free aspect of them. They really have to go but I'll probably have to do it in secret because my mother is convinced somebody is going to pay me more than my time is worth to put them on Ebay.

I understand the hoarding problem because I have it too. But it is so much worse in her.

461 Climax of "Bridges at Toko-Ri" on right now, the ditch scene (irrigation). Always struck me funny how H'wd couldn't mention what was in that ditch, when Michener made kind of a big deal out of it. Mickey Rooney acting. He wasn't bad.

Went to a 5 Guys today, almost never do. Mrs wanted to go to a fabric shop that's going out of business, hoping for some special stuff, no joy. And we were right there, so...
They remind me just a little of the grown-ups hamburgers we used to have just everywhere before the toy imitation kid-burgers came in. Lunch for 2, $23.

And that was all right, except driving home, we see that the classic country drive-in must have just opened up today (in the snow). The service is slow, and they make you enjoy it. Could have gone there and liked it better for half as much. The prettiest girls in this little town work there; it's been that way for 50 years.

463 You'd think at some point, people would figure out that the more you charge, the less business you get. I eat fast food maybe twice a month now because it's a ten dollar trip regardless of where you go. Better to just bring my lunch to work.

I used to think beef prices were driving this but it's been this way for two years now. I think they raised prices because stock prices are more important. McDonald's is going to go under from from it. More will follow.

Tip on fast food pricing, hamburgers and other sandwiches are loss leaders. French fries and soft drinks are where the profit margins are. If you notice, fast food restaurants rarely have sales on fries or soft drinks.

464 kinda late for this, with all the departures, but i was out in the garage finishing off cleaning the new (to us) 1976 Wingmaster...

got a new go to solvent/cleaner: Shooter's Choice. it's pricey @ $33/quart bottle, but a little dab'll do ya, and, if you store the used portion in a sealed glass jar, it'll go far.

this shit EATS carbon, and old oil like i had on this and the Marlin 25 (1920s) in 32 WCF we got last month just goes away.

it does leave an oily residue behind, but a quick wipe with Hoppes #9 takes care of that, and who doesn't like the smell of Hoppes?

Now they have burgers that can cost over $10.

That is the thing about getting on in years, the list of things you either don't care to do or no longer CAN do starts to grow.

For me, things that I suppose I COULD do, once upon a time (but no longer care to do them) is getting pretty long.

Here is a sample of things that I used to do that now, f. it.

a) Move a piano. Must have moved about 20 back in the day. All kinds. Today, no way

b) Install a garbage disposal or a garage door or a hot water heater or hang a main door. Had my fill of those too.

c) Drive for 10 or 12 hours straight. Now I am good for about 6, maybe 8, tops.

d) Drink for days on end. Now, I can't take the punishment. Plus it's good to wake up in the morning and not have to pull a spike out of my head. A glass or two of wine and it's nighty night.

469 Speaking of delegates, it looks like Nevada flipped from Hillary to Bernie (for now).

Hillary won the most delegates to the county conventions on a non-binding vote at the caucuses. The delegates were chosen by those who openly voted for one candidate or the other in porportion to the vote in each precint... NOT by who actually supports who in the long run.

At the county conventions of Washoe (Reno area) and Clarck (Vegas area), Bernie won the county level non-binding vote and again sends delegates chosen by those who openly voted for one candidate or the other in porportion to the vote in each precint... NOT by who actually supports who in the long run.

The rural counties all hate Democrats and don't mean jack in the Dem race.

The actual binding vote and selectino of delegates doesn't happen for another month...

The Fed is into "throwing the kitchen sink at the wall to see what sticks" mode to introduce mild, controlled inflation into the economy in order to fund government deficit spending and interest.....but pushing the "minimum wage" button is likely to be a catastrophic failure.

Although it has translated directly into inflation in the past, it will likely ramp offshoring and automation today, because the infrastructure and technology readily exists to do so. Furthermore, those displaced have few options for new jobs.

Once I grokked "pink slime", I turned off most fast-food burgers or supermarket ground beef -- not because I objected to the concept, but because it didn't seem likely to exclude or adequately sterilize vCJD material. The relevant prions weren't inactivated at normal cooking temperatures.

I suspect that we'll have an "echo-bump" of vCJD a couple of decades after the USDA approved it for human consumption in 2001.

i can still do pretty much everything I used to do. The difference, now, is that it takes me 4 times as long to recover .... and I most certainly have to stretch before I do anything. When I was young I never stretched. In swimming, I used to prefer to race totally cold. Nowadays ... that's not even an option.

This is where the steroids would come into play. The cheating pros proved that steroids are excellent at bringing old man recovery times back down to those of a 20-something. Frankly, the senior citizen sports pros are the best advertisement for steroids and other cheating drugs that many in the regular population could get some decent use out of. They should just stop with the hypocritical self-righteous smugness in the pro sports leagues and get on the train to demonstrate the effectiveness and use of various drugs to help old guys be young, again. After all, the search for the fountain of youth is one of the greatest pursuits man has ever sought after, and they do have some very effective stuff out there.

Garibaldi north of Squamish can be considered an active volcano, with its most recent eruption not long before the last ice sheets retreated. And the Cascade mountain range extends north to about Chilliwack, and sort of loses itself in the Coast Mountain range.

522 I read where a guy got a brain eating amoeba from a neti pot.

True story. Two, in fact, in 2011.

If you live down south where the amoebas are you need to boil the water before you use it or buy distilled. A little common sense goes a long way.

524 Happy Birthday Creeper!

525 Thank you, French Jeton. I dreaded it and then it turned out to be a nothingburger. Seventy is only a number.

526 Another day of wind gusts in the forties here. You know, the climate change kooks could almost get me onboard if they'd start focusing on wind. Seems like it's been blowing a gale for the past two years.

527 525 Creeper
Yeh, I'm seventy, but feel no different than I did at the age of nine. Throws off perspective: see people who look like children but find out they are parents; people who look elderly were born after I graduated from high school.

528 A good day consists of thinking, laughing, crying and finding people to pray for.

Please allow me to serve all of the prerequisites in one video...

532 Outside cat asks himself-
Has this car just been washed? Have I just walked through wet grass and across crushrun driveway? Can I jump up on the hood, climb across windshield and sit on the moonroof?
Answer yes to all the above?
So it shall be.

533 Time to get rid another set of old artifacts. I came across the box of old GBA (Game Boy Advance) games in the storage. Some great stuff in there but it is easily available on newer machines under emulation and one memory card can easily hold everything of worth from the GBA rather than deal with a zillion little cartridges. Some of the boxes don't have the cartridges. I remember I had a lot of them in a big Ziploc bag for travel. Once I find that bag and put everything back in its box it all going to Game Dude, a store in North Hollywood that deals in vintage gaming stuff. So I'll get some cash back. A fraction of what I originally spent but I'm a cheapskate and only, with very rare exception, buy heavily discounted games.

So it won't be too bad. The dismaying part is how many of them are still in the factory shrink wrap and were never opened. These tend to have Circuit City price tags, so they were probably acquired when CC was going under but circumstances prevented me from ever giving them any time. Ah well, likely far from the worse bargain failure I've had. OTOH, if I had the right finances I'd keep them forever, along with every book I've had and had to give up.

540 Slapweasel, would you believe we still have a drive-in theater? But no speakers to forget when you leave, ripping them loose from their stands. Now the sound comes over the car radio. Still, you can sit out there on your lawn chair and watch a film that's only eight or nine months old.

549 Drive-ins? Yeah, I'm old enough to remember the family loading into the station wagon and the kids changing into pajamas so they'd be ready to toss in their beds when the family got home.

The ones I can remember:

2001: A Space Odyssey (my older brother recently insisted that I was the only one in the family who understood it, which is baffling to me as I know I slept through much of it)
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (I think this was for my birthday but the blueberry girl terrified me and I think I cried, IIRC.)
For Pete's Sake (Another one with a lot of material that went over my very young head.)

Later, as a teenager:
Yellowbeard
The Perils of Gwendolyn in the Land of the Yik Yak (hey, it had Tawny Kitaen in a wet to transparency dress)
And the last one I can recall was Jake Speed, which wanted to be a semi-satire of action hero movies but was seen but scarcely anyone. I don't even remember it turning up on cable. Ever. How I remembered the title suggest I badly misallocate neurons.
