The modern heroic ideal replaces the slaying hero with the individual whose higher purpose drives him to serve others - not battle or defeat them. The highest form of this heroism occurs when such service involves risking one's own life. Lindberg points to the New York City firefighters who rushed into the World Trade Center on 9/11 and to humanitarian aid workers who travel to the world's most dangerous places. Analyzing lists of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, Lindberg spots a trend: the percentage of citations that include a life-saving narrative has escalated markedly in the modern era. "The increasing emphasis on life-saving activity over time is so starkly apparent that it is tempting to conclude that no one will get the Congressional Medal of Honor any more simply for exacting a price on the enemy," he writes. "Absent the saving function, the chance of a medal being awarded now seems vanishingly low." When Motivational Speakers Snap Here motivational speaker Eric Thomas who clawed his way up from being a homeless high school dropout in Detroit comes to speak to high school students at Vashon High School, one of the worst schools in St. Louis. But when some students keep talking and texting, Thomas goes off script at the 3:30 mark.
Now that authoritarianism has "gone global," we must confront the disconcerting prospect that the most influential antidemocratic regimes are no longer content simply to contain democracy. Instead, they want to roll it back by reversing the advances dating from the democratic surge of the late 20th century. The challenge presented by regimes in Moscow, Beijing, and Tehran is being taken to an entirely new level by virtue of their projection of illiberal values and standards beyond their own national borders. Just a decade ago, few political observers could even have imagined such a development. Scientist Claims There's Even More Evidence of Planet Nine's Existence Planet Nine! On the night of March 24 1944 RAF Flight Sergeant Nicholas Alkemade was forced to jump from his burning Lancaster bomber 18,000 feet from the ground. Without a parachute. Centring his turret and opening the doors, Alkemade was greeted by a vision of hell. His parachute was already well alight and the fierce flames seared his exposed face and wrists. His rubber oxygen mask, clamped tight over his mouth and nose began to melt. It turns out that Alkemade cheated death again at least three times after the war as well. Recently at work I've been playing with very high speed cameras in order to catch the details of fast-moving objects. But the catch with filming at a high frame rate is that the exposure time gets small and so you tend to be light-starved. Here it looks like Bullet Theory Films either acquire their video in strong daylight or use intense lights when filming inside. London's Royal Geographical Society recently digitized a photograph taken aboard the Endurance in March 1915. The image shows the explorer's collection of reading material, and thanks to digital enhancement, their titles are visible for the first time. We now know that Shackleton brought dictionaries and encyclopedias with him as well as famous works of literature. Some of the notable titles include The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the Poetical Works of Shelley and Almayer's Folly by Joseph Conrad. He also brought with him a number of tomes detailing polar expeditions from the past, like Voyage to the Polar Sea and Journal of HMS Enterprise. I had the choice of staying with the aircraft or jumping out. If I stayed I would be burned to death - my clothes were already well alight and my face and hands burnt, though at the time I scarcely noticed the pain owing to my high state of excitement...I decided to jump and end it all as quick and clean as I could.
That was commonplace among World War I pilots, who often didn't have parachutes. When their aircraft caught fire, they usually jumped to their deaths rather than burn on the way down. I remember reading Eddie Rickenbacker's autobiography when I was a kid. His squadron commander, Raoul Lufbery, always told his men to stay with their planes as long as possible, since jumping meant certain death. One day Lufbery's plane was hit and caught fire. He jumped. Posted by: rickl at March 30, 2016 11:28 PM (sdi6R) 17

As usual, a tasty and complex ONT, Maet. Kudos.
Very interesting memo there on nuke use. Especially like (besides the writing), Oppenheimer's impressive comment that he and his colleagues had no special insight into the political and military aspects of the technology they had created. And of course we know from history that a "demonstration" of the nuke would have been an utter fiasco - i.e., useless. In the very meeting of the Big Six summoned by Hirohito the morning of Aug. 9 (while Nagasaki was getting hit), the military's basic report on Hiroshima was that they could handle it, they had countermeasures in mind, etc. That is - the "shock" effect that was the prime element in US strategy in using the bombs did not occur, and was a failure. Hirohito, Lord Kito, and the peace party seized on Hiroshima as a pretext for what they wanted to do anyway (surrender). The Japanese military was far from knocked off balance by the atomic bomb. As well they should (not) have been. Just a big bomb. Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and other cities called to say "hi" and yawn about your nukyler devastation. Actually, Grump, no - which was my main point. Hiroshima was a pretext for surrender, not a separate and unique cause. And Nagasaki did not figure into the decision at all, as knowledge of it came after the decision had been made.
And using the bomb(s) was clearly the right call, as was planning to use many more of them during Olympic on Kyushu, if it came to that. But the "shock effect," the whole (and plausible) rationale for "preserving" certain Japanese cities from the bombing campaign to make their instant atomic destruction more dramatic, was a failure. Nobody in a position to influence national policy was "shocked" into changing their position - one way or the other - by the nuclear strikes. Just another reminder of how unimaginable it would have been if the invasion plans had to be carried out. Posted by: rhomboid at March 30, 2016 11:47 PM (QDnY+) 71

AD - echo your comment on MoH winners in the past - saving lives, usually your comrades', seems familiar as a prime element in citations going back a long way.
DC in River City - you said it better than I did. About Oppenheimer's letter, and the true sophistication it represented. Exactly. Thrawn, yes. One more Fat Man available, as I recall - with more bombs to start becoming available (serial production of sorts) starting in October 1945. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki strikes were deliberately "paced" close together to imply that the weapons used were readily available to the US, and would be used unstintingly. But the Nagasaki strike came inside the enemy's decision cycle, so didn't figure into it, and the surrender faction grabbed hold of Hiroshima as a pretext much more than they were "shocked" into their long-standing position. Things always get complicated - it's human nature.
Example: My angel, the Future Empress, has been a bit distant of late. We talk daily, of course, and still see each other when we can, but she's begun to brood on the "age question." She's too old to have children - which breaks her heart and mine, both - and so she has begun to doubt what sense marriage makes in our context. I won't argue with her on the matter, except to say that any outcome that allows us to live out our days together would be ideal. And she knows about the 'nieces,' and still encourages me to enjoy life while I still can. Yes, complicated. The 2014 season was one of the lowest for run scoring since the late 60's and during the offseason power hitters became the hot commodity and the MLB rules committee shrunk the strike zone a little.
The 2015 season probably saw a jump due to the shrunken strike zone and one of the best rookie classes in a long time. Yet the Royals won the World Series had an offense that worked counts, emphasized contact and smart baserunning, and is still not a power hitting team. The Mets pitching which mowed down the power hitting but high strikeout Cubbies in a sweep were flustered by the high contact Royals who also took advantage of the bad defense of the Mets. Horde. Friends.
Your prayers, if I might be so bold in the asking. My niece's Mother has passed suddenly, of a heart attack. While at her home in Las Vegas. She was but 61. My niece is right at 40, now, and lives not too far from Destin, FL. Along with her husband and two kids, they'll start out on the drive to Las Vegas tomorrow. I've offered room here in Galveston if they need to rest, along the way. I will have to let my Niece's father know, tomorrow. He's not seen my niece since she was 18 months old, and he's spent more time in prison, than not. And I've not seen him since 1986. But, it is the human thing to let him know, and so I shall. So, please. Prayers for peace in their family there, and for their safety on the road. And I could use one or two of those prayers, too, if you can spare the thought. My well has run dry. Odds and Ends...
Finally got around to watching the Macross Delta preview the other night. Magical Girl Macross? On a slightly more serious note regarding the same topic, Delta opens with a bit about people going mad and violent while suffering from some new psychological disorder. The example shown is a suicide bomber. We then cut to what we later learn is soon to be the site of the next outbreak of this disorder... which happens to be a colony world with a Middle-Eastern influence. Right. Just finished watching the latest episode of Supergirl, which is the one that features The Flash. Apparently the writers don't really understand why people watch crossovers. Here's a hint - people who are watching their first episode of Supergirl because they wanted to see The Further Adventures of The Flash aren't going to stick around to see more Supergirl if the heroes are more or less superfluous to dealing with the Big Bads of the episode... http://tinypic.com/r/2yyxfd5/9 Posted by: bebe's boobs destroy at March 30, 2016 11:48 PM (EpYwv) You might want to try the cheapest carpet that Lowes or Home Depot or local carpet store sells since that is what most apartment complexes install. They figure that the tenant will destroy the carpet in a couple of years, so why put in stuff that normal people want in their homes. That said, it could be worth the price to have a management company rent the thing out. They usually have a maintenance crew that fixes all the stuff that tenants break, plus you wouldn't have to go through the hassle of trying to get your money if a tenant fucks the place up. Yeah, you will get less income per month, but you will also have a whole lot less in headaches. Why more home runs?
1) The ball is wrapped tighter than a golf ball. It fires off that bat like its been shot. 2) Bats are lighter and harder and give better bounce off of them (and shatter into jagged bits more readily) 3) The strike zone is smaller, forcing pitchers to put the ball into play to get a strike call. 4) Players aren't just fit, they get ripped. Lifting is standard, as well as a lot of cross training and flexibility exercise. 5) The doctrine of the game lately is more toward home runs and strikeouts than batting average and getting on base to move runners (the "Moneyball" part Maetenloch mentions). This combines to wear out pitchers faster, and send the balls flying. However, you'll also note that pitchers' numbers are doing better as well: last year ERAs went down significantly across the board. More whiffing idiots swinging for the fences. Re: carpet
take some particle board and cut to fit entire area. You may or may not wish to spike it down but you can probably just let it float free. Put down some flexible tar paper or other waterproof covering. Cheap tile or linoleum would work. Then place area rugs over that. Depending on what you use for your covering will depend on whether you need to spike the chip board down solid. It's fast and it's cheap but it's a not a value enhancer of course. This is merely an expedient that could work. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at March 31, 2016 01:18 AM (Xo1Rt) 338

If the American military - the most powerful fighting force in the history of the world-reserves its highest honor not for killing the enemy but for saving lives, "then we have perhaps reached the point in the development of the modern world at which the modern, saving form of heroism has eclipsed the vestigial forms of classical heroism and their slaying ways for good," Lindberg observes.
Or maybe it's just a pose? The highest honor went to a guy fighting in Kosovo (for what reason ... who knows) just because he got shot down and managed to save his own life. I wouldn't put much into what the military publicly considers its "highest honors" these days. Killing the enemy is still the main job of the military and military heroes are the ones who kill the most enemies for the best strategic advantage. In California, you can have tons o' fun reflecting on the translated names of things. For instance, one of the major roads up the peninsula is "Alameda de las Pulgas" -- or "Avenue of the Fleas". The "Sierra Nevada" mountains are the "Snowed-on Saw". "Paso Robles" is "Pass of the Oaks"; where "Alamo Pintado" is "Painted Poplar". The "Conejo Grade" is the "Bunny Slope" [and in the obscurities of other languages, "Coney Island" is "Isle of the bunnies".]

Yeah, Wisconsin has those too. Try to pronounce Oconomowoc.
Alaska has a few: Kenai tends to trip folks up, as do most of the north slope villages. We also have an Eek and a South Naknek, and, of course, Chicken, because the folks who made the map couldn't figure out how to spell Ptarmigan. Posted by: tcn in AK at March 31, 2016 02:19 AM (+YMhA) Funny that people that grow up in areas with Indian (casino not Slurpee) names can go about any where and pronounce the names pretty much correct on the first shot. Posted by: Shaveswithaoccamsrazor at March 31, 2016 02:36 AM (6I0RI) I have to confess that, before I went off to college, I thought it was pronounced "new oar-liens" -- as in "a novel way to attach a debt to maritime property." After a couple of decades of working with folks from all over the south, my pale approximation would be more like "n'orlins" -- but that doesn't properly reflect the half-pause after the "n"; the blur of "or" toward "aw"; the vowels not precisely matching up with their usual values; and the slide of towards debauchery of the final "s" -- it's almost z-like, but so slight it may not be there at all. It's like you set your mouth up to say a "z" but stop saying anything. Posted by: cthulhu at March 31, 2016 02:48 AM (EzgxV) 421

Pulling the bearings off wasn't too hard; the 1/2" threaded rod tool worked well and even got the bearings off the spindle. My 20-ton press, plus a few custom spacers, plenty of oil worked and lots of checking well. The drawbar comes out easily. Remove it, and see if it's bent. Also, there is at least 1 spacer that centers the drawbar in the spindle; see if it's still there, correctly installed, and undamaged. Posted by: Arbalest at March 31, 2016 03:37 AM (FlRtG) 457

From the side bar, CATO on "Trying to preserve low-skilled manufacturing jobs in America today makes little more sense than Friedman's spoon brigade."
and ..."it means understanding that free trade contributes to that growth and ultimately produces more winners than losers." At the very lowest end like T-shirts maybe. But GDP is not the whole story, since over that 70 years of course we automated so much. GDP going up and jobs down doesn't mean it is good to lose the jobs. But CATO complained about Reagan's tariff to save Harley thirty years ago, and the winners have increasingly been foreigners and globalists (who runs CATO?) to the tune over over half trillion a year that gets converted via foreigners buying US. That is not good, to literally "sell out" our country. Harley builds in India now ... logistics partly sure, but they also avoid the 100% tariff, while our "tariff" is like 2%. And they sell the brand into the whole region from India. Good for globalists and the donor class, that don't care about our country. Your stock value can be diluted, (and investors are deluded, to think stocks go up forever, ZIRP, QE, DOOM) Trade deficits are real money, not just a scorecard. The Brussels terror attacks which killed 35 people earlier this month also injured hundreds more - among them many foreign citizens, including several Israelis.
But when a Jewish volunteer called up the Belgian government's Crisis Center to arrange flying the Israeli victims home, the operator - who identified himself only by the Arabic first name Zakaria - chose to inform him that Israel doesn't exist, and insisted the victims should be sent to "Palestine." The shocking incident, along with an audio recording of the conversation, was published in the Belgian Jewish monthly Joods Actueel. The Alkemade story is inspiring and scary as hell to think about ... though it seems that most people in similar situations (I'm thinking 9/11 obviously) choose to bail out from a height rather than perish in fire. At the end he'd probably be the first to admit it was just plain luck, or the favor of the gods, that let him survive that fall.
I like to think that after the initial terror of the jump, you'd surrender to what is beyond your control and just say, screw it, that was the last decision I'll ever have to make. I'm reminded of the old joke about the idiot who fell out of the skyscraper and as he passed each floor on the way down thought to himself, "so far so good!" I saw the same trend in reader reactions to my book. While speaking before audiences about the nine heroes profiled in Valor, I noticed a clear difference in the responses to stories in which the hero killed enemy forces versus those in which the hero saved lives. The distinction was so sharp that I revised my talks to emphasize the saving narratives. ------Not for good. This is a luxury of a fat lazy civilization at relative peace. If the rank and file faced a severe and imminent threat, you'd see people lionized for killing large numbers of the enemy again Posted by: Tradd at March 31, 2016 07:58 AM (wTFk3) 483

Then I had sex with fiberglass with your wife on a high pole above my head..." Other person: "Uh huh (continues texting)" Posted by: CrustyB at March 31, 2016 08:57 AM (Hnglq) 484

And people like me who grew up in Norfolk say NAH-fuk.
Posted by: RickZ at March 31, 2016 06:05 AM (yiR+0) It's all in the pronunciation of the "folk" part. Virginians say "fuk", everyone else "folk". Posted by: Ashley Judd's Puffy Scamper, formerly MrCaniac at March 31, 2016 11:08 AM (1JnAL) Processing 0.09, elapsed 0.0947 seconds. |
