Has modern civilization lost its love for the warrior archetype?

"Absent the saving function, the chance of a medal being awarded now seems vanishingly low."I saw the same trend in reader reactions to my book. While speaking before audiences about the nine heroes profiled in Valor, I noticed a clear difference in the responses to stories in which the hero killed enemy forces versus those in which the hero saved lives. The distinction was so sharp that I revised my talks to emphasize the saving narratives.

Three hours later, Alkemade opened his eyes. He was lying on snowy ground in a small pine wood. Above him the stars were still visible, only this time they were framed by the edges of the hole he had smashed through the tree canopy. Assessing himself, Alkemade found that he was remarkably intact. In addition to the burns and cuts to the head and thigh, all received in the aircraft, he was suffering only bruising and a twisted knee. Not a single bone had been broken or even fractured. Both of his flying boots had disappeared, probably torn from his feet as he unconsciously struck the tree branches. Being of no further use, Alkemade discarded his parachute harness in the snow.
It turns out that Alkemade cheated death again at least three times after the war as well.
Recently at work I've been playing with very high speed cameras in order to catch the details of fast-moving objects. But the catch with filming at a high frame rate is that the exposure time gets small and so you tend to be light-starved. Here it looks like Bullet Theory Films either acquire their video in strong daylight or use intense lights when filming inside.

London's Royal Geographical Society recently digitized a photograph taken aboard the Endurance in March 1915. The image shows the explorer's collection of reading material, and thanks to digital enhancement, their titles are visible for the first time. We now know that Shackleton brought dictionaries and encyclopedias with him as well as famous works of literature. Some of the notable titles include The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the Poetical Works of Shelley and Almayer's Folly by Joseph Conrad. He also brought with him a number of tomes detailing polar expeditions from the past, like Voyage to the Polar Sea and Journal of HMS Enterprise....The frame hanging on the wall at the left side of the picture contains a print of Rudyard Kipling's poem "If". According to the Royal Geographical Society, Shackleton carried the poem with him onto a sheet of floating ice while fleeing his sinking ship.
The Endurance remained trapped in ice for 10 months before ultimately sinking into the sea, forcing the crew to transfer to the ship's three lifeboats. It was months before they finally found help, but Shackleton was able to lead all 28 members of his crew to safety.

That was commonplace among World War I pilots, who often didn't have parachutes. When their aircraft caught fire, they usually jumped to their deaths rather than burn on the way down.
I remember reading Eddie Rickenbacker's autobiography when I was a kid. His squadron commander, Raoul Lufbery, always told his men to stay with their planes as long as possible, since jumping meant certain death. One day Lufbery's plane was hit and caught fire. He jumped.

And of course we know from history that a "demonstration" of the nuke would have been an utter fiasco - i.e., useless.
In the very meeting of the Big Six summoned by Hirohito the morning of Aug. 9 (while Nagasaki was getting hit), the military's basic report on Hiroshima was that they could handle it, they had countermeasures in mind, etc. That is - the "shock" effect that was the prime element in US strategy in using the bombs did not occur, and was a failure.
Hirohito, Lord Kito, and the peace party seized on Hiroshima as a pretext for what they wanted to do anyway (surrender). The Japanese military was far from knocked off balance by the atomic bomb. As well they should (not) have been. Just a big bomb.
Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and other cities called to say "hi" and yawn about your nukyler devastation.

And using the bomb(s) was clearly the right call, as was planning to use many more of them during Olympic on Kyushu, if it came to that.
But the "shock effect," the whole (and plausible) rationale for "preserving" certain Japanese cities from the bombing campaign to make their instant atomic destruction more dramatic, was a failure. Nobody in a position to influence national policy was "shocked" into changing their position - one way or the other - by the nuclear strikes.
Just another reminder of how unimaginable it would have been if the invasion plans had to be carried out.

Thrawn, yes. One more Fat Man available, as I recall - with more bombs to start becoming available (serial production of sorts) starting in October 1945. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki strikes were deliberately "paced" close together to imply that the weapons used were readily available to the US, and would be used unstintingly.
But the Nagasaki strike came inside the enemy's decision cycle, so didn't figure into it, and the surrender faction grabbed hold of Hiroshima as a pretext much more than they were "shocked" into their long-standing position.

My angel, the Future Empress, has been a bit distant of late. We talk daily, of course, and still see each other when we can, but she's begun to brood on the "age question." She's too old to have children - which breaks her heart and mine, both - and so she has begun to doubt what sense marriage makes in our context.
I won't argue with her on the matter, except to say that any outcome that allows us to live out our days together would be ideal.
And she knows about the 'nieces,' and still encourages me to enjoy life while I still can.

She's thought about it, but, again, our ages. And I have children from my first marriage.
For now, she contents herself with her sisters' children and my own, but it's not enough. A woman's love for children is a powerful thing, and I'm not sure it could be channeled in her case.

My niece's Mother has passed suddenly, of a heart attack. While at her home in Las Vegas.
She was but 61. My niece is right at 40, now, and lives not too far from Destin, FL.
Along with her husband and two kids, they'll start out on the drive to Las Vegas tomorrow. I've offered room here in Galveston if they need to rest, along the way.
I will have to let my Niece's father know, tomorrow. He's not seen my niece since she was 18 months old, and he's spent more time in prison, than not. And I've not seen him since 1986. But, it is the human thing to let him know, and so I shall.
So, please. Prayers for peace in their family there, and for their safety on the road.
And I could use one or two of those prayers, too, if you can spare the thought.

Finally got around to watching the Macross Delta preview the other night. Magical Girl Macross?
On a slightly more serious note regarding the same topic, Delta opens with a bit about people going mad and violent while suffering from some new psychological disorder. The example shown is a suicide bomber. We then cut to what we later learn is soon to be the site of the next outbreak of this disorder... which happens to be a colony world with a Middle-Eastern influence.

Just finished watching the latest episode of Supergirl, which is the one that features The Flash. Apparently the writers don't really understand why people watch crossovers. Here's a hint - people who are watching their first episode of Supergirl because they wanted to see The Further Adventures of The Flash aren't going to stick around to see more Supergirl if the heroes are more or less superfluous to dealing with the Big Bads of the episode...

You might want to try the cheapest carpet that Lowes or Home Depot or local carpet store sells since that is what most apartment complexes install. They figure that the tenant will destroy the carpet in a couple of years, so why put in stuff that normal people want in their homes.
That said, it could be worth the price to have a management company rent the thing out. They usually have a maintenance crew that fixes all the stuff that tenants break, plus you wouldn't have to go through the hassle of trying to get your money if a tenant fucks the place up. Yeah, you will get less income per month, but you will also have a whole lot less in headaches.

The miners would talk about tommy knockers - there were a lot of Limeys and Irish and what-have-you - who would warn before a cave-in or a collapse.
Miners would tear the corner off a 2 dollar bill before they went down the shaft - no idea why, but they all did it.
One of my great grandfathers used to work an 18" seam. he'd lie on his belly with short-handled tools right at the face. a boy behind him would pick up the coal and load it into a little wagon pulled by a pit bull terrier.
A hard, rough, dangerous life, but better than what they'd left behind.

1) The ball is wrapped tighter than a golf ball. It fires off that bat like its been shot.
2) Bats are lighter and harder and give better bounce off of them (and shatter into jagged bits more readily)
3) The strike zone is smaller, forcing pitchers to put the ball into play to get a strike call.
4) Players aren't just fit, they get ripped. Lifting is standard, as well as a lot of cross training and flexibility exercise.
5) The doctrine of the game lately is more toward home runs and strikeouts than batting average and getting on base to move runners (the "Moneyball" part Maetenloch mentions).
This combines to wear out pitchers faster, and send the balls flying. However, you'll also note that pitchers' numbers are doing better as well: last year ERAs went down significantly across the board. More whiffing idiots swinging for the fences.

Had a good friend I grew up with that lived on the south side here in midland/odessa west Texas. I spent many summers at his house and his friends would come by with their little toyota pickups, low riders or classic cars.
They were always that primer gray. Guys would always say they were going to get some exotic paint job but invariably that primer color never seemed to go.
Btw, my buddy was a Mexican and a damn fine one too.

take some particle board and cut to fit entire area. You may or may not wish to spike it down but you can probably just let it float free.
Put down some flexible tar paper or other waterproof covering.
Cheap tile or linoleum would work.
Then place area rugs over that.
Depending on what you use for your covering will depend on whether you need to spike the chip board down solid.
It's fast and it's cheap but it's a not a value enhancer of course.
This is merely an expedient that could work.

Don't know off-hand but I don't think the IRS cares either way. You have a two unit rental. It's been a few years since I had a (one) rental but then IRS had a 'pamphlet' that listed all kinds of stuff you could depreciate. Was rather surprised one could depreciate even the shrubbery, but I was satisfied with being in the red with the simple stuff.

And I don't think anyone would have much trouble with the island just south of it - Assateague .......
I remember driving past the NASA Wallop Island facility (where's rickl?) when I went to Cincoteague. Nice place, just before summer and in fall when weather is cooling. Coastal MD/DE/VA often has the advantage of that seasonality. So not that developed, unlike the nicest parts of the left coast.

I have to confess that, before I went off to college, I thought it was pronounced "new oar-liens" -- as in "a novel way to attach a debt to maritime property." After a couple of decades of working with folks from all over the south, my pale approximation would be more like "n'orlins" -- but that doesn't properly reflect the half-pause after the "n"; the blur of "or" toward "aw"; the vowels not precisely matching up with their usual values; and the slide of towards debauchery of the final "s" -- it's almost z-like, but so slight it may not be there at all. It's like you set your mouth up to say a "z" but stop saying anything.

Is it painted, or (GAH!) wood-grain? The pocket door from the entry to the kitchen got a nice scrape all across the door a foot from the bottom when someone went wild with recasing the opening. It had been stained.

If you're still reading, get the HF 20-ton press. The 12-ton press should also work, but the 20-ton is standard. Today I managed to correctly press both bearings on to the spindle AND correctly into the cast-iron housing: no mis-alignment, no cracks, no problems. Naturally, I did a lot of checking, even though I've done this sort of thing before. I also had to get some spacer parts: 1"x8 and 1.5"x8 nuts, 2 6x6x3/4" steel plates (immediately lose the cast-iron plates the presses come with, or re-purpose them; cast iron will effectively grenade under pressure) and some miscellaneous steel pieces.

Reassembly was a bit tougher, as nothing wanted to align, and I didn't want to crack the cast iron mill head.
My 20-ton press, plus a few custom spacers, plenty of oil worked and lots of checking well. The spindle turns freely, almost as freely as when I had only 1 bearing on it, suggesting that my overall assembly alignment is very good.

That makes sense. Why didn't you say so in the first place? Incidentally, I think I may have bent my drawbar somewhere along the line -- the spindle seems to run true, but the top of the drawbar goes wiggle-waggle when the mill is turning. I don't know if it's causing any problems, but it IS distracting.

The drawbar comes out easily. Remove it, and see if it's bent. Also, there is at least 1 spacer that centers the drawbar in the spindle; see if it's still there, correctly installed, and undamaged.

Harley builds in India now ... logistics partly sure, but they also avoid the 100% tariff, while our "tariff" is like 2%. And they sell the brand into the whole region from India. Good for globalists and the donor class, that don't care about our country. Your stock value can be diluted, (and investors are deluded, to think stocks go up forever, ZIRP, QE, DOOM)
