EMT 3/26/16 [krakatoa]

So that was a week at the HQ, eh? Meltdowns, gratuitous insults, nut-punches, titty-twisters & general unpleasantness for everyone involved.

As Robert Brault* wisely said: If you can’t forgive and forget, pick one.

*No, I don't know him either. But the intertubes is full of wisdom.**

23 The Birchers were righteously purged from the Republican party and conservative movement.

It's time to take names and do the same with the Trumpkins, who fall into three categories:

1. Those on the take, be it ratings (Hannity, Limbaugh, Ingraham), bribery (Carson), or other personal gain.

2. Morally deficient, resentful people with psychopathic tendencies who'd intentionally harm the country as revenge for perceived slights.

3. The shallow, poorly informed Idiocracy crowd too heavily influenced by entertainment value, platitudes and the media.

Let them languish somewhere else. Stormfront, Infowars, TruTV... wherever. Not one of them deserve to have their opinion taken seriously ever again.

24 I had the unfortunate duty to help my mother get a new phone last Saturday. 73 years old and wanted a smartphone. From a flipphone. Not ideal. But I have to say she is doing fine with it. Going over the basics with her for about a half hour and glory of all glories my two nieces, 15 and 12, show up to save the day, week, my sanity, you name it. Told them if they helped her learn it I would take them to the movies some time when they wanted. I have only been called once this week to run over there and turn her Bluetooth on as it was off somehow. They done good. Saved my ass because I was dreading the calls I would get.

sooo......

You're apparently totes ok with rampant illegal, undocumented immigrants sucking the life out of this country.

Totes fine with almost $19 trillion in debt, and unsustainable deficit.

Elected officials lying, cheating, and stealing to get elected and screw over, openly, the people who elected them.

And a political party that wants to use its base to get elected, but would rather have a new, "better" class of voters for them to abuse later...

Ummm, ok. No. Absolutely not.

I may be angry, but I'm motivated to vote not by my anger,
But my desire to facilitate change. Drastic, unmitigated change of the highest order.

I expect you are furiously composing a response that feel is witty and cutting.

It isn't.

Frankly, you sound like a petulant teenager going through puberty instead of a mature poster in this smart military blog.

The decisiveness you seek to inspire is lost on most of the good people here, who are for free speech and thought.

You clearly do not feel we have a right to those freedoms, only you?

Again, ummmm. No.

57 G'mornin' Horde!

Not planning to stay very long this morning as I have an "A" meeting to get ready for that I really need this morning. Just claiming my seat, and whatnot.

I'll only drop-in to say for myself
1) The Birchers, though they could be a very difficult bunch at times, were largely right about Commies, the path of history, etc.
2) I'm not supporting The Witch, but I'm not voting for the hairpiece either. They're both NY liberals, no "choice" at all, only I fear Trump might actually be - and I can hardly believe I'm going to type this - worse than the Witch. May not be rational, but there it is
3) ace was perfectly correct yesterday when he said (paraphrasing) that we need to stop fighting over something that's already gone and not coming back and start to fight about what's next. I've been in that camp since Oct 2012 when it became obvious that Mittens was mailing-in the campaign he had won with the first debate and The JEF was going to be reelected. The USA as we know or remember it was done, gone, finished, never coming back.

Cripes, I need a shower. Later Horde. Have fun storming the castle.

Seems to me to be a trivial exercise in tracking a drone and seizing the drone and package when it hovers for delivery.

I'm surely missing something because they couldn't possibly be that stupid they haven't thought of how to prevent that.

But how could it be less expensive?

I had never heard of these semi-submersible barges before. Do you have any links about them?

I had always thought that the term "pig boat" came from the bouquet of diesel, unwashed men and underwater toilets that did not function all that well which was confined in a closed steel tube and which permeated everything inside. The people living in it soon stopped noticing but when they first opened a hatch, other sailors on shore or on sub tenders would remark on the similarity to the odor down wind from a pig farm.

150 I would guess that there's never been quite such a dichotomy amongst the morons. Sure there's been disagreements about particulars but usually we're all on the same page or at least reading from the same book.

Now we seem to be in different libraries in different countries.

I don't mind disagreement so much. What I take to heart is being called some sort of evil demon because of who I appear to be supporting. I never saw that here before.

I've seen it at liberal sites amongst liberals and between liberals and conservatives.

Just not here before.

People have become too personally invested in their choice. And seem to think that they and only they have the correct take on it.

That's zealot country there. And zealots are a problem no matter where you find them.

Posted by: FireHorse at March 26, 2016 07:40 AM (kQ5yx)"

Here is my current favorite conspiracy theory:

Everybody knows that communist/socialist countries can never keep their people supplied with toilet paper. I don't know why this is but it seems to be a hard and fast rule as reliable as gravity.

A coworker of mine who grew up in a communist country said that toilet paper was never available in stores so people used newspaper.

Newspapers have seen the writing on the wall and they realize that people get their information from the internet and only old people read newspapers any more. As the old people die off, there will be no more market for newspapers.

That is why newspapers are all endorsing socialists and communists. When there is no more toilet paper, people will buy newspapers again.

194 Not to nit pick (hah, of course I'm nit picking)

But abaft means aft of the beam. or on the stern quarter.

I would think you meant aft as most tugs will either push or pull a barge.

Sometimes you tie up alongside but not abaft as it makes it hard even for a harbor tug to steer.

(harbor tugs have swiveling screws or thrusters so as to be able to spin within their own length.)

having worked a harbor tug both on the Missippi and in New York harbor, I think I can speak with authority.

Although I had not heard that they had submersible barges on the Lakes. (and I also worked ore boats on Lake Michigan to Lake Superior run)

Or that that's why subs were called pig boats.

I too thought it was the smell.

Today's subs do not compare with the old diesel boats size wise.

If you have the opportunity to tour one do so. It will open your eyes to the bravery of those men who crewed them.

225 Interesting article about Belgium being a failed state on CNN. It mentions Marc Dutroux, a serial child killer who escaped detection for years due to general incompetence and, perhaps more ominously but never proven conclusively, the involvement of pedophiles highly placed in the government. I mentioned Dutroux the day the attacks took place, but I also mentioned The Brabant Killers, a shadowy and mysterious group who terrorized the country in the 1980s by staging numerous and extremely violent robberies of a specific supermarket chain in the country. I say robberies, but robbery really wasn't the motive as they took very little money and often ditched it after the crime. Instead they seemed more intent on committing murder as they killed employees and customers, including children. The attacks even stopped for a year or two and then began again before finally stopping for good. No one was ever caught, although they had suspects and plenty of theories. Some thought they were right wing or left wing terrorists attempting to use the attacks as a means to weaken the government. Operation Gladio was tossed around too (Gladio being a NATO operation to have groups of heavily armed and trained people ready to act as a guerilla force in case of a Soviet invasion of Western Europe). Another theory says they were members of the national police force, which would account for how they so easily escaped capture.

Dutroux and The Brabant Gang make for some seriously interesting reading. But one thing you take away is that Belgium has been a shit show for a long, long time. The Muslims are just the icing on a shitty cake.

229 I haven't been to the range yet with the sight.

I'm going to practice what they call point shooting.

They say that that's how most people wind up using their weapon in an emergency. People don't have time or presence of mind to do the two handed grip and some say that the two handed grip can be restrictive in an active combat situation.

That's why I got the sight because although pointing can be fairly accurate, it still gives you no feedback. But a sight will.

Point shooting is where you aim the weapon like you point your finger. In fact one of the exercises is to put your finger alongside the slide above the trigger and leave it there and point at things to get used to doing that instead of aiming using the sights. (please unload the weapon first)

The zombies are kind of slow and they don't move their heads around and duck like a live person. Also, the survivors get lots of practice.

My question is why Rick continues to carry a .357 revolver. A .22 seems adequate for a head shot on the zombies and they seldom encounter only six of them. A semiauto .22 with as large a magazine capacity as possible and with a silencer would seem like the way to go. Maybe that Kel-Tec .22 magnum pistol with the 30 round magazine.

Read a lot about the "caliber wars" and the consensus to me seemed that for the money the 9mm would put more metal on target in less time and was more accurate for the average shooter.

I plan on getting a .45 to match the .45 carbine I already have.

I agree with your post yesterday, that Cruz in time convinced me he is conniving and deceitful. I can't trust him any more than the GOPe does.

The "establishment" are globalists, and while Cruz would probably move toward controlling illegals, he still seems globalist on trade. The billionaires we complain about, all want their "Free Trade" riches to keep pouring in. Trump is the only anti-globalism candidate. He has been consistent on that since the late 80's at least, where he noted in testimony to a House committee how policy pushed money into the stock market (globalist investments for all) instead of building our domestic resources (mostly housing at that time).

I don't think you're going to like what's coming. They haven't gone soft. They're merely trying to keep readers of the comics guessing, not to what is coming, but how.

Last week's death was a substitute. That arrow was supposed to be for another character (not Darryl, he's not in the comic). I think when you meet Negan you're going to not be saying anything about soft... well, not the story, at least.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at March 26, 2016 07:40 AM (Xo1Rt)

The thing to keep in mind is that, from what I've been seeing, it is not the Moron Horde that is doing this. Fact is, I've been on this site pretty much daily for years, and recognize the players (JJ Sefton, nevergiveup, Carol, AtC, Chicque, etc, etc.). Don't post much myself as I usually end up getting willowed anyway (gotten kinda slow in my old age).

But the point is, it is not the Horde that has been generating all the hate and discontent around here of late. It is the trolls. And we have seen them, the ones making things so unpleasant that Ace even shut down comments for a time this week, something that I've NEVER seen happen in all my years on this site. Who they are and where they came from I do not know. But they are easy to spot, by their previously unknown names. Some of them are obviously Trumpsters and the like. Others are, I suspect, lefties sent in to muddy the waters on this and other conservative sites (keep in mind that the tactics we have seen here of late are also the well worn tricks of the Dem/socialist crowd, and have been for decades; I've seen it, dating back to the old Fidonet/Usenet days). Always remember, when it comes to pure unadulterated hate, no one can hold a candle to your average Democrat/socialist type.

My only suggestion, for whatever it is worth, is that ace and the cobs engage in a bit more free use of the Banhammer on these miscreants. When things start getting really out of control, as they have around here of late, it is really the only solution.

It cost about $200 less than the walther. Although I have seen a walther p99 going for 299.

It also has some extras that don't come with other of similar size and caliber.

I like the feel and fit. Easy take down and cleaning. Two different back straps, two magazines each holding 17 rnds.

Nice trigger action very clean and short take up. Single action with a decocker. has two chamber loaded flags and a cocked flag at the rear of the slide.

Comes with sherpa type holster and two carriers one belt and one slide on. Loader and cleaning brushes with case.

I've never had to shoot anyone but from all information is interpret I've no faith in 9mm, anything bigger has to be better.

Posted by: Skip at March 26, 2016 08:24 AM (fizMZ)"

Data collected from real world shootings seem to indicate that 9mm and .45 FMJ work about equally well at stopping people. The surprising data is that .34 ACP is not that much worse. Most people who are killed by pistol shot to any place except the central nervous system bleed to death. This takes a while. Crazy people, people on drugs and some very pissed off people continue to do bad things after they are shot and before they bleed out.

Hollow point ammunition tends to produce better results. The process of causing the bullet to expand transfers a lot more energy to the bullet and it disrupts a lot more tissue, causing a lot of traumatizing damage to organs and causing a lot more bleeding. The .357 revolver cartridge and .357 SIG auto cartridge are about the most effective pistol cartridges. They both use hollow point bullets traveling at more than high velocity. Both use bullets that are 9mm in diameter. Both are only slightly less effective than a 5.57 rifle round at the same distance.

320 Belgium is on high alert after a security officer for a nuclear plant was found dead with his work pass stolen.

The concerning development, which occurred on Thursday but was only reported today by Derniere Heure, comes after concerns the Brussels bombers had been plotting to create a radioactive dirty bomb that would scatter nuclear material in a crowded public place.

The security officer was reportedly shot dead as he walked his dog in the city of Charleroi. Authorities quickly cancelled his pass.

While the motive for the murder remains unknown, police are looking into the theory he was killed to steal his pass and gain access to a nuclear facility.

331 A brief note on what wasn't in "The Paranoid Style in American Politics."
When I was coming up, the Birchers were past being reviled; they were universally mocked, and I put the "universal" part down to WmFBuckley. Eastern "moderate conservatives" felt an urgent need to dissass from their entire cause. And the Birchers, many will recall, did not respond graciously.

Thing was, there was a lot of paranoia on the part of the expellers. If you don't count the general, baked-in paranoia about capitalism being a conspiracy, there were still several great waves of "populist" anti-right furor -- hard to recognize in the aw-shucks prairie fire or 1920's pacifism, but, there all along. Came to a peak with the suppression of the American Liberty League, a more-or-less bipartisan anti-New Deal coalition of pro-business interests that was set up and ambushed in several ways, like when Smedley Butler testified that they planned a military coup with the American Legion as the muscle. If you don't know about what happened, you should look them up. It was the Left doing the heavy paranoid lifting, all along. "Reactionaries" were just Reacting.

"Expelling" the Trump faction is about as smart as GOPe expelling the Tea Party. You'll feel great for a while, but where are you pushing those people? Do you want them as your enemies?

Now, banning individual Trumpists, here, is another story altogether. Lord knows individual Birchers could be a PITA. Lording it over one whole (new) wing of your movement is shallow, and empty, triumphalism.

335 A lot of the people voting for Trump are either looking to stick it to both parties or are just plain desperate. The desperate see the country slipping away and like a drowning person are going to grab anything that provides them hope for surviving. It's gone beyond logic at this point. But the only way I could see voting for Hillary is if you truly believe that Trump would be a worse President than her. In that case, go for it. But I can't wrap my mind around that way of thinking.

Maybe someone could explain why they took the Israeli situation, and turned it into a failure, when in the book it was a success. Not just that the Israelis kept the zombie horde at bay, but also took in refugees of all colors and stripes, thus effectively ending the Middle East crisis!

Best part of the book: the set piece battles, with rotating lines of shooters. In this age, you could have filmed that scene. CGI zombies, and extended lines, with protected flanks, and the mass of bodies piling up... It could have been epic.

Ah the lovely ampersand. Beloved by all but understood by oh so few. Squiggling across the literary landscape simultaneously uniting and dividing the binary denizens of the universe.

Many do not know that the word 'ampersand' is actually derived from the Sanskrit word for "tears in the sand", as you so aptly referenced, and the shape of the ampersand itself is reminiscent of the tracks of a drop of water drifting down the windowpane of our souls in a psychic windstorm.

387 Good morning. I slept late and I'm still tired.

Months ago I disconnected Hulu when I realized that I had been being billed for it for a year without my knowing about it. I signed up for one of those trial weeks and forgot to turn it off. I had never used it.

Yesterday I decided to actually give it a try again (I had tried it when it first came out and didn't like it) Hoo boy!

I have loaded up my queue with old cop/PI dramas: Simon and Simon, Hunter, Crime Story, Miami Vice, Fall Guy and more.

I watched the pilots for Simon and Simon and Miami Vice last night. It's storming outside, so its a great weekend for watching oldies.

Thanks for that history stringer. I'm still having to go back and study all those gaps in my understanding of how we got to this point. My feeling so far is the power brokers of communism have long infiltrated, but power corrupts on many fronts. Birchers ALL had to be purged (and I have not yet studied their core ideas vs Buckley), just as guys like Buchanan and Derbyshire had to be purged form NR.

To me, the Trumpkin purges are similar, but we are throwing out the anti-globalism with the dirty Trump bath water. or something like that. Open borders and/or continued globalism (diversity like what is devouring the EU) will destroy US, and that is not paranoia but evidenced in our balance sheets.

406 As I've commented before, a year ago we were all so positive about 2016. So many choices and some appeared to be great.

So many of the promising choices didn't get any traction. Some stuck their feet in their mouths, many didn't get funding or notice in the crowded field. Some filed to see the anti-establishment sentiment and cozied up like they thought they were supposed to.

Back then the establishment was pursuing it's strategy to divide the anti-Jeb movement. When the more conservative candidates began to drop out first, the biggest mouth, saying the forbidden things, began to pick up the flood of support and has never looked back.

Perhaps by offering so many anti-Jeb options, the GOP let the anti-establishment mood build to an unbeatable level. Now they're reduced to plotting to install a token candidate through parliamentary maneuvers.

I still think that Romney would have won if the elections had been held two weeks earlier. Not that I was a Romney fan, but he is a far better man than Obama.

The same thing happened in 2008 with McCain. The financial meltdown happened at a convenient time and the press was able to spin it for Obama.

There are a number of reasons for anti-Trump sentiment. For the old guard establishment it is fear of losing power. Even electoral loss is preferable for them to losing control of even a losing party.

For the ordinary person on the street, though, their problem is not that Trump speaks the truth. Their problem with Trump is that he is a loathsome human being with some worrying indications that he might be mentally unbalanced.

Now, for me, that is not enough to keep me from voting for Trump to keep Hillary Clinton out of the White House. Hillary Clinton hates America and she hates me as a church going, white, heterosexual man. Hillary Clinton will make the country a far worse place for my children to live in. Her term as Secretary of State is a preview of the world wide chaos she would cause if she were President.

However, some people can't get past Trump's many and obvious flaws.

I'm not sure I appreciated how iconic the show was at the time, but now... wow. And t wasn't just the music and the vibrant colors and the clothes, but I remember that in Miami Vice, even the good guys would regularly be killed. Most shows didn't do that, so it added a little extra drama.

I saw it as an appologia for fascism.

The base philosophy behind fascism is that the anarcho-socialists who where doing all the violence in the late 19th and early 20th century had a real grievance against the "evils of evil capitalism and its satanic mills" and so it was conceived to provide a middle path that gave the anarchists the guarantee of success and safety and buy-in they claimed to want, and the industrialists freedom from the riots and violence through there concessions.

So the "lets make ourselves slightly sick so we can be left alone and the zombies can go back to being torpid masses" made me angry.

Granted, I think a lot of things are metaphors for fascism.

Ask yourself: Who benefits from a mud-slinging match between Cruz and Trump in the primary? Not Cruz; not Trump. It's the GOPe, and whichever stooge they plan to use to steal the primary. And the Donks, too, if they can be distinguished from GOPe these days.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 26, 2016 09:24 AM (/i7Ua)

There was a commenter here last night who made the same point. Supposedly these allegations originated with people associated with the Rubio campaign in February.

The allegations will hurt Cruz directly, and if Trump can be blamed for them, that will hurt him. Meanwhile, I notice that Kasich is polling higher, which could lead to a brokered convention.

How conveeenient for the GOPe.

456 To understand the current political situation in the country and apparently here at AoS, you have to understand what a neoconservative is (and no I'm not talking about Jews, because Rubio is a neocon) and where neoconservative thought originated (Troysky). Once you fully understand the difference between neoconservative and paleoconservative...you will get it. Here's a hint: neoconservatism seeks the destruction of paleoconservatism...and they are winning.

Posted by: Mimzey at March 26, 2016 09:42 AM (aRUb8)

469 Eh.

My thoughts on the last week are (yeah, I'm a moron) pretty simple.

Most conservatives, and hence most GOP voters, arrived at our political philosophy through thought and logic.

Most probably started out as a libtard of some flavor, and noticed the world didn't actually work the way our betters were telling us,

and by expanding our thinking arrived at conservatism.

So-

Yelling and screaming about how Trump is a nazi or fascist or racist or insane-

simply doesn't comport with the reality of the head of a successful multi-million dollar business.

Nor does all the silly preacher, anti-christian talk about Cruz.

It's all completely unconvincing unless you're willing to let yourself be drawn into some emotional connection to a frikkin' politician.

As for me- the way I game it out, is this:

If we go to the convention with no majority winner, we get the GOPe pick.

No ifs, ands or buts.

Please, check out previous Brokered Conventions. And check your own memories of rule changes at the 2012 convention-

they were all done by voice vote with Boehner calling the outcomes as "the ayes have it" even when the ayes were clearly out voted.

I want Cruz, but if he can't do it.

Then, I want Trump and believe he needs to be supported in the primaries.

I believe Ace and others have completely lost sight of how important it is that the GOPe lose this time around-

they will never ever ever have to take the conservative movement seriously again if they don't lose this time.

As Milton Friedman said (more or less)- It's not about electing the right people so much as it is-

providing the disincentives for politicians to be complete assholes to their voters.

That's how I game it out.

YMMV.

479 I, too, thought that Romney was going to win in October, 2012. Then outside events happened that the Obama team was able to turn around and make them look good. I still think that Romney would have won if the elections had been held two weeks earlier. Not that I was a Romney fan, but he is a far better man than Obama.

The same thing happened in 2008 with McCain. The financial meltdown happened at a convenient time and the press was able to spin it for Obama.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but if the Republicans survive intact, I expect something to happen next September/October that can be spun to make the Democrat look good.

Events happen all the time. The problem is Republicans don't react to the events well. Remember McCain's response to the stock market crash? He suspended his campaign for 3 days. And Romney just plain stopped giving a shit a month out. He had that great first debate, then for some inexplicable reason, just backed down and allowed Obama to hit him over the head for the next 3 weeks, without returning any punches.

In 2008 I voted for Ron Paul in the primary. Not because I was a big Paul supporter, but because the only candidates left were McCain, Huckabee, and Paul, and McCain had it almost locked up. That was a no-brainer.
