Trump: I'm Not Doing the Debate on Monday, and Also, There'll Be Riots If I'm Not the Nominee

He's too busy giving a "major speech" on Monday to whoever it is he has to schedule a speech for on Monday.

“Nobody told me about debates. As you saw I thought the last debate on CNN was the last debate," Trump said on Wednesday morning.

"I'm doing a major speech in front of a very important group of people that night," Trump said, adding that it had been "scheduled a while ago."

"I think it's enough," he added, about the dozen debates the Republican candidates have participated in so far.

I saw that interview. I don't think he actually mentioned who this very important group of people were. It turns out it's AIPAC, which is having a conference from Sunday through Tuesday. I'm pretty sure they could move his speech from one day to another.

But of course Trump just doesn't want to do the debate -- for obvious reasons.

And then he started talking about his own riots.

"I think we'll win before getting to the convention, but I can tell you, if we didn’t and if we're 20 votes short or if we’re 100 short and we’re at 1,100 and somebody else is at 500 or 400 cause we’re way ahead of everybody, I don't think you can say that we don't get it automatically," Trump said on CNN on Wednesday. "I think you'd have riots."

"I wouldn't lead it, but I think bad things would happen," Trump said, adding the outcome would "disenfranchise" his supporters.

Nice Reichtag you got here. Be a shame if somethin' 'appened to it.

I love being threatened.

If Obama said something like this -- if he said, "If my Supreme Court nominee isn't given an up or down vote, I think we'd have riots; I wouldn't lead it, but I think bad things would happen; that would disenfranchise my voters" -- what would you say about that?

Would you nod along and say "You tell 'em, Obama. You rattle that saber about the mob uprisings you could stir."

Or would you say: "Why does this shady interloper believe he has the right to threaten me?"

Well, I guess having one standard is a pussy thing now.

1 Grant was a fairly lousy human being, and all things considered McClellan was considered a fairly decent one. But one man actually fought. Perhaps some suspect that even if Trump is disordered like Grant...at least he fights. And look my preference is Cruz, and there is no doubt Cruz fights. BUT Lincoln too overlooked a ton of faults because Grant fought.

5 I haven't watched FNC in ages, but I did turn it on last night to watch the returns. The main thing that struck me about Megyn and quite a few of her cohorts, is that they have botoxed every last inch of their face. It's so odd watching their mouths move, and their eyes blink, but other than that . . . totally frozen. It's almost like watching mannequins speak.

Brit Hume looked fantastic, though.

Are we going to discuss Obama's new Supreme pick?

9 Im honestly still too irritated with Rubio and his voters this morning to jump to the next Trump controversy. Of course we can expect the idiots in congress to fold to Obama and confirm his SC nominee, so I've got that rage simmering on the back burner ready to boil over at a moment's notice.

14 FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Facing a backlash from Appalachian Democrats, Hillary Clinton's campaign on Monday tried to reaffirm her commitment to coal communities one day after declaring on national television she was going to "to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business."

...

Brian Fallon, Clinton's national press secretary, said Republicans were trying to twist Clinton's words. But later in the day, the Clinton campaign released a statement that appeared to walk back her comments that she would put coal miners and coal companies out of business.

"Coal will remain a part of the energy mix for years to come, and we have a shared responsibility to ensure that coal communities receive the benefits they have earned-and can build the future they deserve," she said.

But don't let that stop the false narrative you're creating.

16 Also, I thought Tucker Carlson had some great points last night (which are points that he made in an article a few months ago). It was to say to the GOPe, instead of trying to overcome Trump, you need to learn to incorporate his message. Your voters are telling you they are UNHAPPY with the trade agreements, they're UNHAPPY with what you've done on immigration. LISTEN TO THEM.

I think it's too late now, though, which is a damn shame. I'm not a Trump-ite, but I do think immigration is the most important issue facing us today. If Trump or Cruz wins it, I hope he follows through. If Clinton wins, we're all fucked. And if the GOPe decides on shenanigans at the convention, and put in another conservative mush, like Bush, we're completely fucked.

Posted by: Scout at March 16, 2016 10:06 AM (fCWi3)

17 In the 2000 general election, Bush won Texas by 21%, taking all 32 electors.

Can you imagine if those 32 had decided to trump the will of the people and cast their Electoral votes for Gore?

Yes, there would have been riots.

If the GOP plays games with the rules to deny the nom the people have chosen, they are finished as a political party. We will burn it to the ground.

And I support Cruz and think Trump is a joke. But if the Establishment can just pick whoever they want, why even vote?

Except that the RNC will change " the rules" as they see fit. I am a Trump supporter, but if I were a Cruz supporter I would be paying close attention, as they will use those rules against. Cruz, too.

19 The thing is, if Trump gets the delegates through the primary system and then gets the nomination yanked at the convention, I'm afraid there would be riots. I don't think he was being glib when he said this.

And it would be all on the GOPe if this were to happen. Trump is winning this as fair and square as politics can be.

23 Why should Trump or any other nominee debate someone who is mathematically eliminated???

Posted by: suckitupbuttercup at March 16, 2016 10:08 AM (GHtJF)

24 So, let me get this straight. If Trump gets the delegates he needs, he's the nominee, and the Establishment, despite the Pledge, doesn't vote for him or even tries to run 3rd party.

If Trump doesn't reach the bare majority threshold, but instead "just" has a plurality, and he gets nominated, see above. If some else is nominated, he bolts, there's riots.

None of these are any good. Best I can hope for is that enough of the GOPe sucks it up and supports Trump, or maaaaaaybe he makes some yuge, fantastic, wonderful deal at the convention and everyone is satisfied enough so that the Party stays together, sort of.

Oh, and while this is going on, maybe Hillary! gets indicted or otherwise has to drop out of the race (she is not healthy).

Fun fun fun until we all die in a fire.

That would normally work, except for the fact that the GOP Establishment has played that card too often, and then betrayed those they co-opted as soon as there was no recourse.

They no longer have any credibility. Ronald Reagan could rise from the dead to propose it, and really mean it, and he would be booed off the stage.

44 Honestly, I haven't watched a full debate since probably January. Trump is right. At this point it is a waste of time. You know why? They keep asking the same questions or pitting candidates against each other. It's a repeat of the same stuff. Do you really think they are going to get a huge crowd for a debate between Cruz and Kasich? It's going to be a snoozefest.

If I hear one more time how Kasich's father was a mailman and how he helped balance the budget a billion years ago, I think I'll scream. Maybe Cruz will point out that Kasich voted for NAFTA, was part of the problem at Lehman Bros. (where he walked into a job with NO investment banking experience), and wants to legalize the illegals.

BORING. Trump is better off continuing his rallies and primary events. The best stuff I've seen on Trump was Hannity's one-on-one with him a week or so ago. I saved it to my DVR to show my kids, it was that good. Much more useful to see that kind of stuff than 'gotchas' by Megyn Kelly and personal attacks.

i agree with all of that -- I support a lot of Trumpism, just not Trump.

his casual attitude towards political violence and his disgust with the disorderliness of routine political disagreement is very, very worrying.

And yet --- he has to kick it up a notch.

60 Reposting because it can never be repeated enough and illustrates why Trump is the front runner.

The GOP has controlled the house for 18 of the last 22 years, the senate for 12 of the last 22 years and the presidency for 8 of the last 22 years and and what have we gotten?

A national debt that has gone from 5 trillion to 20 trillion and is for all intents and purposes unpayable, wars without end, massive illegal immigration, the eroding of our sovreignty, the erosion of our liberty, massive expansions of leviathan, sitting idly by as a rogue executive runs roughshod over the constitution an on and on.

The GOP as currently constituted and operated is an unmitigated disaster.

They are not a legitimate governing party they are a fraud, a sham, a mockery of a political party.

They must be destroyed, I hope this is the election that puts the nail in the coffin of the GOP.

And here's the kicker, they could have so easily taken away all of Trumps fire and monmentum by co-opting his stances, anger and fire, but since they are all owned and operated by the COC, establishment and imbedded ruling cartels they tried to denigrate, tamp down and deligitimze the rightful anger at the ruling class.

So when Trumps the nominee I fully expect the establishment to burn it down rather than be led by the voters choice of candidate.

The GOP is a useless decicated husk of a fraudulent political party and deserves and needs to be destroyed.

The only way forward is for Cruz to drop out, he cannot win enough delegates outright and he will never be allowed to get the nomination in a brokered convention.

Cruz should reach out to Trump and ask to be the VP, I have every reason to believe Trump would accept this as he has said his VP pick would need to be a political insider, I don't mean this as Cruz is establishment but that Cruz knows the ins and outs of the Senate and I would personally love to see a Cruz operate as the President of the Senate, McConnels head would explode.

This really is the only way forward.

It is, but Trump says he wants to let them back in after deporting them, and Lord only knows what he told the NYT. He's weak on both illegal immigration and legal immigration, and he's happily hired foreigners in preference to Americans.

At this point, most of his supporters no longer care about immigration (according to that recent poll), or they're so besotted with him, they would him bed their wives and think he was a great man for doing it.

His is a nomination that is based upon anger at the powers that be. If his (core) supporters think he, and by proxy they, are being denied there spot at the table once again, I would be shocked if there weren't riots. In fact, I would be a little disappointed.
And spare me the...but the rules say 1237 delegates or whatever. No one can look at this process and tell me that the powers that be, the infamous "they" or "the establishment" have not been doing their absolute utmost to remove DT from the process along the way. The rules may say he needs those delegates, but the participants (his voters) in the game know when some aren't playiing by the spirit of the game.
Riot away. Blame it on Trump. That's fine. I don't think he'll really give two shits. And then when you're done rioting at the R convention, regardless of the outcome, take to the streets and start doing your best BLM impression and start rioting at D events.

i agree, which is why I don't support Trump.

This is an important subject, but you have to keep in mind, a lot of people are... uncomfortable discussing it because they've been taught to believe that any talk of reducing immigration is racist -- because why else would you do so, except for hating on brown people?

That means you have to address the subject carefully and explain there are ton of non-racial arguments in favor of this. You have to convince people that it's even *permissible* to discuss this before you can even make your argument.

what's trump's first statement on the matter, right out of the box?

"Mexicans are coming over here and raping people, and bringing their drugs."

Welp, that's the end of that.

He hasn't upped his game since.

he just doesn't offer reasons for it, except for "you either have a country or you don't," which actually is a good START of an argument, but he doesn't explain what that means or further persuade the persaudable but unpersuaded.

He's wrong. It's really a decision Americans can make between dictatorship and the Constitution.

No, I'm not calling Trump a dictator. But does anyone believe he'll roll back the executive power Obama grabbed? Seriously?

But if the conversation of this election focused on the roll-back of Obama's executive grab, he'd be ushered out.

It's as Ace says, Kubuki theater.

No, the media wants you to focus on the three candidates who offer different forms of dictatorship.
Sanders = socialist dictator utopia
Clinton = establishment/corporatist dictator utopia
Trump = seriously who knows what he'll do, other than use the increased executive powers Obama's added

Let's ignore the real issue of this election. Will we walk away from the Constitution in favor of dictators who promise to fulfill our every wishes, or will we embrace the only thing that truly makes America great. And keeps the barbarians at bay.

It appears Americans have decided.

I know you despise Trump, but the Clintons have committed corruption and an unprecedented level - it puts all other politicians, past and present, to shame for thinking small.

Also, the Clinton's have made an art of demonizing their enemies, whether political or just bureaucrats attempting to do their job, with scorched-earth hits. Want to know thin-skinned, look no further than Hillary refusing to let the press witness her boarding her d@mn plane.

I don't think it's that easy - the Policy Conference is a big deal for AIPAC and there are a lot of moving parts, moreso than something like CPAC. Plus there are attendees who are coming out specifically to see the speakers on a given day, and AIPAC risks alienating them if they move this slot.

Instead as we Americans have devolved from the eloquence of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Samuel Adams and morphed into "boxers or briefs" as political discourse ANY "debate" will be the equivalent of a hybrid of Jackass and the Westminster Dog Show...

the GOP may be cleaner by a nose than the Democrats in the blame for the devolution of the American political mind and rugby field but in the end they wash in the same bathhouse.

Posted by: sven10077 at March 16, 2016 10:34 AM (g8Hfr)

181 I think Trump is not only smart, but I am grateful for any cancelled debate at this point in the primary. Debates are not debates, they are reality shows. Set ups.

I want the one on one discussions with either an interviewer or an audience, like Trumps town halls. Cruz and Trump both benefit from now on in situations where they can actually talk at length about their policies instead of trying to outsnark each other on a debate stage. And Kasich has no place at all in a debate, because he cannot possibly win the nomination through the current rule set up.

The voters on the other side who might not want to vote for Hillary(Bernie's young bots) could be persuaded to vote for Cruz or Trumps economic policies if they actually got to hear them.

This is where Trump is not going to get strung along and to most of us, that's an admirable stand. For once, a Republican that recognizes the trap and refuses to step in it.

193 1) Trump is telling the truth about the riots, whether you want to hear it or not. Only riots involving people who are strongly in favor of the 2nd amendment against the people who want to nullify their vote would be a little bit different than riots involving people who want to take away the 2nd amendment against the people who want to preserve it.

2) Trump needs a better spokesman as to the debate. He should have just said he made other plans upon hearing that it wouldn't be a one on one debate with the only other candidate who can still win the nomination.

3) Megyn Kelly, after what she was saying yesterday, shouldn't be allowed within 30 yards of Trump. Her personal goal must be to destroy Trump in anyway she can. He would have to be an idiot to put himself in a pillary and to give her stones and tomatoes and a camera. 196 WASHINGTON (AP) - One of the guns that Mexican officials say was found at the hideout of drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera has been found to be associated with Fast and Furious, a failed "gun-walking" operation, according to the Justice Department.

The department said in a letter to members of Congress that a .50-caliber rifle that Mexican officials sent for tracing after Guzman's arrest in January has been connected to Fast and Furious.

Officials say the weapon was one of 19 firearms that Mexican authorities said was recovered from the hideout and was the only one determined to be associated with the botched sting operation, in which the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives allowed gun-runners to buy weapons in hopes of tracking them and disrupting gun smuggling rungs.

An excellent post, Sven. Just before the ACW, Grant was reduced to clerking in a saddlery store and selling firewood. Seated across the McClean's table at Appomattox, Lee and Grant chit-chatted about their service during the Mexican War. The aristocratic Lee didn't remember Grant from that time, but Grant recalled seeing Lee. Then, getting to business, Bobby Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia.

Read Trump's words carefully. It is a clear threat.

How much clearer do you want it?

209 OK, I'm trying to figure this out...

Are you saying that Trump should do another debate? And if so, how would that help him or the republicans in the general election?

Concerning the convention, if Cruz were in Trump's position and said exactly the same thing, would you be so outraged and upset?

Posted by: jwest at March 16, 2016 10:38 AM (Zs4uk)

210 Protests, yes. Riots? I don't think I even know how to do that. Maybe someone can start an online class to teach nice middle-aged housewives how to riot.

Right?! Conservative riot = Lutheran riot. Oh noes! But really, it's one to think, this could get ugly. It's quite another thing for a presidential candidate to say my supporters could riot if things don't go my way. I don't approve of this. I'd rather not have a gangster president who is okay with implicit threats of violence. I'm also against GOP elites thinking they can pull enough strings to get someone the nomination who wasn't even a nominee and thinking people will be sanguine about it this time around and hold their nose to vote.

-------

This is where I've been disappointed with Cruz. It's such an easy argument to make with respect to the economy. Why have your wages been stagnant for 15 years? Illegals. Why can't you get that job? Illegals. Are these really jobs that Americans won't do? No, they're jobs that Americans won't do for what the greedheads want to pay. What will happen when we give these illegals amnesty? Even more illegals, because now that these people are legal their bosses will have to pay taxes on them and follow all the regulations that they weren't following before, which makes them less cost-effective, which means they will turn around and find new illegals.

Illegal immigration also ties into massive budget increases at all levels. Why are your taxes going through the roof? Welfare for illegals. More schools for the children of illegals. More prisons for criminal illegals.

And it also allows you to reach out to black voters by pointing out how they're being hurt the worst by illegals, and you don't even need to get a large percentage of black voters to win. Any Democrat candidate needs to pull at least 90% to win, so if you can reduce the Democrat's take to 85% you'll win.

So easy. I just don't know why he hasn't done it.

I

Also, the Clinton's have

Yes the Clintons would silence their enemies in scummy ways but it was not overt and chilling the way Trump wants to silence his enemies. Plus the Clintons directed their fire at Republicans. Trump directs his fire at everyone opposed to Trump, left or right.

But while we know they want to silence conservatives, they cloak their desires behind legitimate-sounding issues, like "campaign finance reform". That is how they get otherwise virtuous people to buy into their corruption.

Trump just goes right out and says "I want to silence my enemies" with no plausibly laudable rationale. I mean, there is no real big problem with libel laws. It is obvious he just wants to shut up people who disagree with him.

That is why I say they are just two different types of authoritarians. Hillary is the stealth authoritarian, Trump is the in-your-face authoritarian. Hillary is slightly worse in that she is able to sneak her authoritarianism past people, but I don't think that makes her orders of magnitude worse than Trump.

In other news, in its FOIA litigation Judicial Watch has named eight Hillary cronies it wants to depose including Huma, Cheryl and Pagliano, holding back on deposing Hillary for the moment.

When deposed, Huma and Cheryl will each have to walk across a dense 100-yard mine field of questions. Recall that Cheryl was the point on deciding which of the 80,000 e-mails were "personal" and deletable, and which had to be turned over to State for FOIA purposes.

We can expect (and pray) that Huma and Cheryl will be forced to plead the Fifth. This will embarass Hillary, but more importantly, make it that much harder for the DOJ/FBI to say "move along, nothing to see here."

290 Ace, you're starting to worry me.

What Trump said is not a threat, but a statement of fact: if the GOP acts in a totalitarian manner and tries to nullify the votes of millions of its constituents---and this includes those who voted for Ted Cruz, who has a large following---then Republican voters will abandon it en masse, and the party's demise will be a fait accompli. Even Cruz has said the Republican establishment's playing with fire.

This is true for both parties.

The Democrats have a similar problem because the substantial constituency that voted for Bernie is finally realizing the perfidy of their party. Bernie never had a chance of success because their primaries are fixed to support the establishment. The establishment candidate never had a chance of losing, and Bernie supporters were deceived into participating in a charade. (Just like most elections in Chicago.)

If I'm correct, we'll see their anger play out this summer.

A Constitutional leader understands that his authority derives from the consent of the governed, to advance the interests of the governed, as spelled out in our founding documents.

Companies that don't pay their bills exactly to the terms agreed to have a rough time getting vendors and contractors the second time around.

When building projects the size and scope of Trump's properties, any delay due to an unpaid bill would cost enormous amounts of money. The facts don't seem to back up your assertion.

If there's a debate, Cruz would be smart to go straight after Kasich.

I'm one of you blue collar guys.

His plans would keep the middle and working class down.

Cruz - this is your moment, if you have the guts.

The only way you can win this outright is to be the "conservative", well-organized alternative to Trump.

I tried to warn FOX. They told me to pound sand. No longer their key demographic. Brit Hume was the last man standing. And then he was gone.

He is constantaly questioning their premises. But look it all goes to what does one mean when they say fight the media. Does it mean twitter wars. If that, then no Cruz doesn't do that. Maybe that is the most effective. I don't know. But this idea that only Trump fights the media is somewhat BS. The media is in bed with Trump.

I don't see that happening at all.

Trump doesn't need Cruz to get the nomination and Cruz is not going to bring in new voters to Trump.

Also, if the premise of Cruz supporters is "Trump is unacceptable because he's a fascist!!!" What does that say about Cruz for him being on the ticket with Trump?

422 I think Trump's riot comments aren't Reichstag-threats.

I think they're pretty close to dead on- at least as far as the RNC convention goes.

If he's very close, say 100 votes or under, esp. if it's like 20-30-

and he's denied and we get Jeb! or Romney or Ryan or kasich or Mario in a backroom deal-

all that will do is prove to the millions of voters who have been disenfranchised by Obama and the Dims and the spineless weaselly of the GOPe-

that they have no one to represent them. They have no voice in gov't. And they no longer have hope for a better future for them and their children.

Yes, that is a prescription for riots. God help us all, when the working and middle class become radicalized,

because they are the doers and makers, the producers-

and that means when they set their minds to it. Things get done in a real and complete way.

Honestly, if there are convention hijinks, I hope Trump goes 3rd party-

because that will mean that the disenfranchised have leadership and representation and are much less likely to break with American tradition.

That being said.

Cruz needs to win outright or be the guy 20-30 points away.

Cruz needs to realize that he can't out-Trump Trump on Trump's signature issues-

but he sure as hell can out-conservative and out-Republican John Kasich.

He better get on that now.

Meh. Trump's word choice of "riot" was a poor one to be sure.

Not only that but it's wrong. There would not be a riot if Trump were shoved aside by the Establishment. There would just be a 48 to 50 State landslide victory for Hillary (or whoever) in November.

What Trump was clearly getting at is that it would create a devastating revolt within the GOP. - One that could plausibly destroy the part. - Permanently.

And while there wouldn't be a riot, the GOP convention would be damn ugly. And that's an entirely avoidable result that the GOP Establishment would have brought on itself.
That's a reality worth considering.

466 My issue? I don't think Trump has any actual principles, he tells people what he thinks they want to hear. If he gets the nomination he'll change from "what Donald Trump thinks Republican primary voters want to hear" to "what Donald Trump thinks the American electorate wants to hear". What will that be? Who knows? Probably not what actual conservatives claim to want, would be my guess.

My evidence? This is a man who ran 1) a scam university more like Scientology than U of Phoenix, 2) a straight-up multilevel marketing scheme based on vitamins and pee tests, and 3) publicity for another multilevel marketing scheme based on video phones at the dawn of the Skype era.

He's a huckster, but there are apparently a lot more people who enjoy being told what they want to hear than I thought there were. I think that, plus the "burn it all down" contingent, plus folks who just want a big orange Obama to pay *their* mortgage and stick thumbs into the eyes of *their* enemies, are the man's base.

Could he beat Hillary in the general election? I'd say no, but he's the favorite to win the GOP nomination, which puts us so far through the looking glass that nobody knows nothing anymore. He can win or lose without my support, that's for sure. I'll turn out for the downticket races but I'm getting out of politics for birdwatching if Trump clinches.

476 I really hate it when Obama attempts to shame his opposition. The Constitution says 'advise' and 'consent'. It doesn't just say 'consent' and it says nothing about process. So the Senate can 'advise' the President that they do not agree with his pick and be done with it.

It's totally irrelevant to the matter, but can one not like a guy who, when Obama mentioned when Garland needed money he sold his comic book collection, put his hand on his heart.

re Trump

I'm amazed at the antipathy towards his rhetoric. He's a street talker and blue collar that happens to be (through his own hard work as a capitalist) a billionaire. It's a class thing that many seem to have a great antipathy toward.

478 Whether or not Trump will make the magic number is not relevant. He commands a huge lead. Trump has more delegates than all others combined. If he still commands a similar lead after June then he should win at the convention. If he does not then we will know that dirty pool has been played, and that we the people have been played. Current rules require having a majority of delegates in 8 states to be on the convention ballot, only Cruz and Trump have them. For Cruz to have a chance he has to start winning delegates.

I can see an argument that Donald Trump could pick Carson for the Veep slot.
Carson would put a significant dent in the Dem's hold on the black vote.

But I still think that choosing John Kasich makes more sense.
There is no question that Trump is going to need to placate the Establishment the way Reagan did in 1980 by choosing HW Bush.
Kasich fulfills that requirement nearly perfectly. Plus, Kasich likely locks down Ohio in the general election.

Carson is another true outsider who has never been elected. Picking him could cause the Establishment within the GOP to give mere lip service support to a Trump Carson ticket.

Still... I wouldn't say Carson is out of the question.
There are few things the GOP fears more than being branded racist. When they realized they were being perceived as throwing the first black Republican Veep pick under the bus, they just might 'discover' the truly inspirational nature of Trump's candidacy.

490 Well, last night was a downer. So Trump gets a huge chunk of the delegates available and greatly widens his lead. John Kasich managed to win his own state after failing to get higher than 2nd in a few others. Rubio gets nuked in FL, gives a graceful concession speech, and bows out after his voters in states other than OH failed to realize they needed to pick somebody else. Cruz overperforms his polls, gets some delegates, but can't get a majority in any of the 3 states he was playing for because he's still dragging the dead weight of Kasich and Rubio. Lovely.....just lovely.

Now we get treated to cries for civility, unity, and rally round the front-runner; Trump has sensibly decided headed for the exits since there's only so long his shallow lines will hold up as the debate talk time per candidate rises; and the GOP remains bitterly divided.

What really irks me is that I expected to wake up and find a bunch of Republican office holders had looked over the options and decided to rally round Cruz as the last remaining viable actual Republican in this race. It's understandable they'd hold off until Rubio was out (foolish, but understandable), but I'm not seeing the great coalescing. Leaking the story that Cruz is expected to crawl back to McConnell to make nice first is so short-sighted. There has been way too much short-sighted selfishness in this campaign.

We need to get this to a clear two-man race, help Cruz make his case, and see what happens. This will not end in a food fight at the convention. If Trump doesn't get to the majority and Cruz makes it a closer race, the delegates will be lobbied to vote before the convention starts.

I will vote for Trump if he is the nominee, but I will not support him one moment earlier.

You forgot to mention that she broke federal law, compromised our national security, and actively participated in the intimidation of women during her husband's administration. And that's just the beginning with her.

Honestly, any comparison between Trump and Clinton, either as to authoritarian tendencies or general corruption, is fatuous.

//That is just downright chilling. Yes the Clintons would silence their enemies in scummy ways but it was not overt and chilling the way Trump wants to silence his enemies.//

Chilling? Nah. Just naive. Trump believes that the media is habitually dishonest and lies with impunity. In this, he is correct. His error is that he simply hasn't thought out the implications of the defamation regime he seems to want. In any case, there's no way for Trump to "open up those libel laws" because defamation is not a federal matter. Federal district courts can handle state defamation cases under diversity jurisdiction and our federal courts of appeal can handle First Amendment claims that arise from state defamation laws, but there are no actual federal defamation laws, and there is no federal common law. And there is no appetite in the federal courts for reopening Sullivan or any of its progeny. So, this concern about Trump re defamation law is just as knee-jerk as Trump's comments regarding the same.

518 Donald "Howard Beale" Trump came very close to having a terrible, horrible, very bad night last night. He won Missouri by a whisker, and the margin in North Carolina was also very close. He would have lost both had Rubio not stayed in the race. Thanks, Marco.

Because of DJT's non-existent ground game he continues to underperform his polling numbers substantially, and he does not appear to be improving either as a candidate or an organizer. This is, incidentally, what will sink him in November even if he gets the nod. You don't build a ground game overnight and he has already missed the boat on that one.

As of last night (and even with those two close calls being narrowly decided in his favor) he has only won 47% of the available delegates, even though the system is strongly biased in favor of the candidate with a plurality. It will be interesting to see what happens from here on in, with the opposition field having cleared out and the election moving into areas not considered to be favorable to him (i.e. the West).

His bluster about "riots" if he doesn't get to 1237 and doesn't get the nomination is probably because he realizes that he may have a problem, but can't think of any way to fix it other than by shooting his mouth off. Yes, we know he's "mad as hell and he isn't going to take it anymore" (Howard Beale's signature line, for those of you playing along at home), but that's not really a campaign strategy.

Maybe, as a backup plan, his lawyers are already working on a way to get a judge to award him the nomination via eminent domain.

Not
only that but it's wrong. There would not be a riot if Trump were

What
Trump was clearly getting at is that it would create a devastating

And while there wouldn't be a riot, the GOP

525 //Actually, you have that just about wrong. Trump would lead to a landslide for the Dems (at least at the top)... //

Yeah, that might happen *now* since his own party is attacking him relentlessly. The polls before the last several weeks looked much differently. This is what's called a self-fulfilling prophecy. That's not on Trump. That's on the GOPe and movement con hysterics who don't understand how politics and coalitions work.

//That is actually the least important reason not to want him however.//

That'd be the most important reason, actually--if it were something more than a self-fulfilling prophecy. Anyway, it's academic. He will win the nomination outright. (This talk of a contested convention is so much fantasy.)

//One of the more important reasons is he felt perfectly free to threaten riots.//

One of the most troubling things about this election is that people who would probably be reasonable otherwise have lost all perspective and common sense. The now-debunked claim that Corey Lewandowski assaulted a reporter is a good example. Claiming that Trump is actually threatening riots is a good example, too.

Let's get some perspective here. Focus on Hillary. Win. For once.

It's also the reason Trump won't tear up the contract with Iran but will re-negotiate which seems to horrify some people.

Oh...I don't think he's done "bailing" yet. His shtick is designed hand the election over to Hillary. How? He is a complete juvenile schmuck, and his behavior alienates many, while he claims to stand on "principle".. if there is a conflict, he will conveniently "bail" to go 3rd party..giving the POTUS position to the dems, and simply say.. "I tried my best" (like Obama, any failure is placed on the people who are just too dumb to see his brilliance). Then crony politics goes on and crony capitalists like Trump keep the cash flowing, while having painted the republicans as bigots, racists and angry thugs for the foreseeable future. Thanks a lot suckers.

528 You don't have wear a tin foil hat to worry that Kasich could be running a spoiler campaign for Il Duce as part of establishment deal to cut Cruz out and install Johnny as #2 in Il Duce regime. Nothing personal, it's just bidness.

I didn't say it was unusual. That said, I don;t think that politics is like a "company" with the "employees" being the citizens. The pecking order is backwards on the structure, imo.In a company setting if someone violates the NDA they can be fired or sued. (Trumps favorite crybaby tactic)That additude has no place in the government/citizen dynamic, especially from someone who claims a desire to change things "for the better". (hmm ..how close to the excuse of doing things "for the greater good" is that?)

To your second claim...Trump HAS A CONTRACT with his campaign workers??? What are you basing that claim on?

One of the most troubling things about this
election is that people who would probably be reasonable otherwise have
lost all perspective and common sense. The now-debunked claim that Corey
Lewandowski assaulted a reporter is a good example. Claiming that Trump
is actually threatening riots is a good example, too.

Let's get some perspective here. Focus on Hillary. Win. For once.

Can you name someone who sees thru Trumps con that doesn't sound "like Glenn Beck"?
Serious question. In your mind, what is the level of criticism of Trump that is allowed before someone sounds like GB?Who are some of the people you might find "reasonable" in their criticism of Trump? Where's the line in your opinion?

Posted by: Reality...some don't like it at March 16, 2016 01:31 PM (aRUb8)

535 If the GOP plays games with the rules to deny the
nom the people have chosen, they are finished as a political party. We
will burn it to the ground.

And I support Cruz and think Trump is a joke. But if the Establishment can just pick whoever they want, why even vote?

Posted by: Fen at March 16, 2016 10:07 AM (V/X7u)
IF Trump has 1237 he's the nominee; by the rules.
IF Trump doesn't have 1237, the votes can, will, and must change to have someone who didn't get a majority be the nominee; and nothing in the rules says the one with the most delegates "must" be the choice.
Complaining the rules don't require you to win and there will be riots if you don't win regardless of the rules seems a bit... petty. And whiny. And annoying.
I'm curious if Cruz starts pulling close or even slightly ahead an neither have 1237 if his tune will change and suddenly he must be picked because of some other reason, and still threatening riots for any alternative to his greatness.

How so? How would that work? Also, giving you the benefit of doubt, and that he could do that, Why would he. You present a false choice..If this=that. If he were to do that he would be trashed. That is not the methodology of a con man. They always want to look innocent and a victim of circumstance. All Social Justice Warriors do. Trump IS, in effect, fighting for "Social Justice" isn't he?
You're falling for a con man, just like the left is full of con men and con women.

I didn't say that. I was referring to the contract his company has with his employees. But now that you mention it he may have a contract with some on his campaign. I would imagine that would be a good idea for both parties.

The point is that to him contracts are sacred as they should be.

Of course if Cruz is leading in delegates he would be deemed the winner by the people.

There is a process to any theivery. For instance a thief may jimmy a window or kick in a door with they're foot.
The GOPe simply has it in their minds to ignore the front runner and foist Jeb or Ryan or some other Rube in their place.

So yeah, if that takes place let the riots begin as far as I'm concerned.

Correct. If it's a brokered convention you will get neither Cruz nor Trump. I look forward to Romney's.....I forget, will this be his third or fourth presidential run? The Buffalo Bills got nothing on Romney. Not a one time failure, but a candidate of many, many failures.

Threat it may be, but it's the truth. There may not be riots, but the GOP will never be the same.

Posted by: DFCtomm at March 16, 2016 03:32 PM (/1gXq)

551 How many GOP debates have there been? Way more than enough and the last few have been "hit jobs" with all candidates pouncing on Trump.

So I don't see the advantage of Trump doing another debate - he IS in the driver's seat ... whether anyone likes it or not. So he gets the luxury of certain advantages as the frontrunner. Nothing more American than people taking advantage of their advantages.

But I wish all this Trump fanbois vs Cruz fanatics would stop. The bottom line is - whether you like it or not ... we're more similar than we are different. I was a Cruz guy two years ago until Trump came along and I saw how much damage he was willing to do - and COULD do ... to the political class. But I'll jump aboard and support Cruz in the general if he wins fair and square with no shenanigans.

And - by the way ... WE NEED EACH OTHER.

Fact is ... we're going into a convention where the establishment is planning one big AMBUSH in order to hijack the party and give the nomination to Paul Ryan or (fill in establishment squish here). If it comes down to a move to make Paul Ryan the nominee (with Kasich as his running mate) if Trump and Cruz are TIED ...

We will all be screaming for each other's support.

Last night was a victory. Not a Trump victory but a victory for voters who are fed up with the betrayal of the GOP. Anyone who supports Trump OR Cruz are beneficiaries of that VICTORY. No matter what happens - there are only two candidates who will walk into that convention with the moral authority to be the nominee - and neither of those candidates are part of the political class.

Trump is a chickenshit fake man.
