Overnight Open Thread (3-15-2016) – Not Nam, There Are Rules Edition

Like I'm going to waste good material on a primary night. Homey M. don't play that game.

Semi-related: The Punishment ONT yearns.

Quote of the Day

I share many of the New Urbanist ideas for cities, but I can't cast my lot in with the group because they are screwball-daft when the subject of cars comes up, and will entertain any inconvenience as long as it's anti-car. I don't want to ride a got-damned bicycle to work. Most people don't. Period. So you have to force them out of their cars into something else. If a neighborhood is made sufficiently inconvenient for cars, some will adapt, and some will find a home in a place where they can have a car. That's your choice. If you stay, fine; glad you're happy. If you go out into the far-flung exurbs because you want to drive, and are willing to endure a few inconveniences, then fine; that's yhour choice. You'd think the Critics of Everyone Else's Choices would be happy that people are living far out and taking the train in, but no, a fresh new horror has revealed itself as people continue to show the depthless roiling stinky-pitch of their hearts:

'While city planners generally welcome transit hubs to their community, they are concerned that, if improperly located, the stations will actually increase sprawl by encouraging people to drive to rail stations instead of walking, biking or taking the bus.'

People are driving to the train.

And PARKING.

Searching for Fahrvergnügen

Remember that marketing slogan for Volkswagen? Fahrvergnügen meant the enjoyment of driving. But that seems to be fading, as a recent study show fewer adults are getting driver's licenses (why bother when you have Uber, Lyft, and, in due time, "autonomous" vehicles?). A friend's husband recently told me he couldn't wait for driverless cars for his daughters-it's so dangerous out there! But it's always been dangerous on the roads. In the latest issue of the Weekly Standard, I argue for common sense, although it's clear I'm not winning the argument.

Airlines Soon to Introduce a Class Below Economy

So what is basic economy? For frugal travellers, it's shorthand for giving up some of the few remaining comforts of flying economy. The biggest sacrifice is losing the ability to reserve a seat when booking a flight (so be prepared for a middle seat in the back row). If you are travelling with family or colleagues, forget about sitting together. Passengers flying basic economy also forfeit their right to upgrade their seats and to change or cancel their reservations more than 24 hours after booking.

There Is No Good Reason We Can't Make A 'Face/Off' Sequel Starring Nicolas Cage And John Travolta

My reasoning for why we should make a Face/Off sequel starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta is simple: Why shouldn't we make a Face/Off sequel starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta? Are we worried about tarnishing its legacy? I don't see how that's even possible. We're so far down the reboot/reimagining/sequel path at this point that we'd need GPS to find our way back. One more can't possibly hurt. Hell, it could even be a good movie. Last year you probably heard "a Rocky sequel focusing on Apollo Creed's illegitimate son" and rolled your eyes so hard they spun all the way around and left you looking back at your brain. But then Creed came out and it was awesome. Face/Off 2: The Faces Are Back Off (working title) could be good. And if we hurry up and start now, we can rush it out by next year for the 20th anniversary. Hashtag nostalgia.

And even if it's not "good," it would probably still be great. Face/Off was - and is - a ton of fun because it was loud bonkers nonsense where Cage and Travolta didn't so much chew scenery as gorge on it. If you're worried those two have lost their appetites since then, please allow me to direct your attention to every single movie Nicolas Cage has made since Face/Off was released and every single thing John Travolta is doing as Robert Shapiro on The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story right now.

Meet Cindy Crawford's Underage Daughter

The media is engaging in its favorite pastime again. The one where it manipulates people into feeling something so that it can self-righteously chide those people for behaving exactly how it knew they would. Currently the media is making us want to fuck Cindy Crawford's fourteen-year-old daughter, Kaia Gerber. They're putting her in magazines, dolling her up in makeup, and calling her Crawford's lookalike. Just don't agree.

It was an elegant idea, a special cargo pod was developed that had seats and oxygen and amenities, and would be loaded, shoved onboard a 747 cargo plane and pulled off at the end with a forklift and delivered directly to the terminal.

Sort of like flying in a conex box, with the added benefit of not having to walk down any boarding ramp.

Yes, but to be fair he's just a shit-head actor in a production still from Apocalypse Now. I'm not really expecting proper firearms technique from the acting profession. Which makes the truly skilled folks like Keanu or Cruise a joy to watch on screen as they shoot bad guys in the face.

The good side is that so far everything is working as advertised and I have to admit that SquareSpace does a pretty good job at tutorials (obviously, if I can come up with a working product).

The bad side is that there's no way to test it out with other people until I pay the subscription and it goes live. Which means I can't test the sales portion in real-world conditions and that makes me nervous as well.

Because a taut, linear drama in which the action steadily intensifies as we move upstream can always benefit from 45 minute detours to talk existentialism with French expats and maybe catch a USO show.

Only upside of Redux was I think it was the only time Cyndi Wood got nekkid on screen, but even that didn't make it worthwhile.

When I was last in Bangkok (2years ago), Thailand was pretty friendly and cheap, as long as you would put about $100k (3 million Baht) on deposit and leave it.

Locals could rent a 3/2 house for $300/month. If they found out you were American, that went up to close to 2k.

So, locals rent houses and then......distorted Capitalism happens. Americans pay 4-6 hundred.

88 The Xena link contained a Moronworthy paragraph:

"When it comes to Xena, there is also the obvious plus that the lesbian
gaze often overlaps with the heterosexual male gaze. So, for male
screenwriters, producers and directors, it isn't a huge leap of
imagination to create a character that appeals to a lesbian audience. To
put it bluntly, you put a woman in a leather-strapped shiny-tit shield,
send her jogging over a hill -- and literally everybody's happy."

89 The Xena thing annoys me. I wasn't a fan of the show (I thought that Xena and Hercules were both silly), but apparently everything has to be ALL GAY ALL THE TIME!!!

BTW, there already is an openly bisexual warrior-heroine on The 100, so it's not like this is somehow groundbreaking.

Yes. Clearly. No reason at all except that one, that is the only possible, conceivable reason. IN fact, all they should do is one scene of Xena and that blonde chick kissing, then fade to black, because clearly the entire purpose of the remake will be completely justified and complete.

There's no reason to even show motion. Just music and a still of them smooching. The whole purpose of the remake will have been completely fulfilled because there is no other reason on earth to do a remake other than to clearly establish Xena as a lesbian.

A name he suggests, a "creative director": Bree Mills. Apparently 100% lesbo, short hair and tomboy shit. There's a picture of her showing up at the AVN awards dressed in a tuxedo, with sneakers, with two of her top babes all slutted up on each arm.

She makes some good stuff. I mean if that "content" was available when I was about 16, if it were possible to kill yourself doing something while watching it, I would be one dead little jack-off.

Warning for anyone not interested in that kind of thing. Don't Google her name, it will quickly lead you to places that are very NSFW.

178 I wouldn't say there was a subtext of Xena-Gab being gay for each other, more of an inside joke. They'd go right to the edge and then make fun of you the viewer for thinking that. It was a fun quirky part of the show.

For instance there was an episode where somehow they traveled into the future and met one of their fans that asked them if they "you know, like each a lot, a whole lot". And they'd respond "sure we love each other" but when they finally found out what the fan meant they were all "eeewww, no".

Plus Gab had a male love interest, some sort of proto messiah figure, who of course died horribly. Xena, however would do anything that moves. There were many episodes where she'd seduce other women as part of her plan.

190 They hate the car because it means freedom of movement, freedom to go
where you want when you want instead of relying on the government to
decide where and when you go.

It's simple. You can't run a command economy that permits the free movement of people, and therefore goods and services, because such movement equilibrates prices according to demand, i.e., institutes a market system. Plastic surgeons in North Dakota will earn less than those in Beverly Hills, and therefore plastic surgeons will want to move from North Dakota to Beverly Hills. To make a command economy work - in this case to set the national price of a boob job - you absolutely HAVE to restrict the movement of plastic surgeons from North Dakota to Beverly Hills.

This is why the USSR instituted internal passports. Also, why the USSR collapsed. And why American leftists want to cut back on autos, and replace them with train travel. "Papers please?" gives them a chubby.

France nominally owns, Mexico claims it, I think, but it is, or was garrisoned by the French. Has military installations on it.

If France were to be suddenly disrupted by a Franco-Muzzie civil war, they likely would have bigger fish to fry than worrying about a tiny dot of land in the Pacific Ocean. A well-organized group of filibusterers could reach Clipperton by boat from San Diego. I think it might have an airfield, too. But you have to move quickly. Once it became clear that France was in no position to defend Clipperton, Mexico would probably annex it.

Bonus points for annexing it in the name of "France Libre Outre Mar."

I printed the comment, we discussed it, I went to arm the defenses, got back, read more comments, and hit this one.....then went to tell her that it was you. 280 OK Morons, help me out. I had a fuse blow tonight, and when I reset it and went to boot my computer, it told me "no hard drive".

I'm going to take it in tomorrow to be looked at. I actually hope that if it isn't something that can be easily fixed that it isn't the c drive that fried, reconstructing THAT is a pain in the ass ( made easier because I have my old c drive from 4-5 months ago that I cloned to a solid state drive. That'll get me 90% back).

But assuming that I need a a new computer, which would you recommend? I took a quick look at the Microcenter website and came up with 2 possibilities. They are only $10 apart in price, so that's not an issue. Also, forget the OS, I have a license for both Win 7 ultimate and Win10 ultimate, I'll do a clean install of one of them (recommendations there? I'm on 7 now, should I go to 10?) just to get rid of all the crap that comes preinstalled.

First choice is the Acer predator AG-605, specs here:

http://www.microcenter.com/product/444271/Predator_AG3-605-UR1H_Desktop_Computer?ob=1

Second choice is the Dell XPS-8700

http://www.microcenter.com/quickView/451568/XPS_8700_Desktop_Computer?ob=1#BVRRWidgetID

They seem pretty comparable, but the Dell has an extra 4 GB RAM, which, all other things being equal, makes me lean that way. But maybe all other things aren't equal, what say y'all who know more than me?

317 So, thought experiment/pop quiz, for those who need it:

Quick, who ruled Spain in 1492? Easy, right?

Okay, smarty pants--who ruled France in the same year? Who was the Pope? Who was Holy Roman Emperor?

Why is it that you know one, and not the other? Wasn't France the most powerful European nation that year? Making that King the most powerful man in Western Civilization--next to that Pope? (actually, two Popes that year) And that Holy Roman Emperor--he actually was the first ruler, the founder, of a House that held sway over large parts of Europe until 1918, and which at one time had the largest empire in the world. So why don't we know his name?

Takeaway: the story of history is being written every moment of our lives, whether we wish it so or no. What we do, as Lincoln said, marks us down to the latest generation. The powerful of the present may be remembered, to the extent they are remembered, for reasons having nothing to do with how they got to where they got, or nothing to do with themselves, but entirely because of someone or something else.

Elsewhise, Charles VIII would be as familiar a name as Ferdinand and Isabella. Of course, on this day that John Kasich won Ohio, we should remember that the capital he governs from was named for the flunky who was once brought in chains before Isabella, and of whose proposed journey Charles rejected. And of Frederick III--well, at least the House of Hapsburg is somewhat known, and did rule over that empire Columbus helped usher in, even if no one today knows who Fred was.

We cannot escape history, we will be remembered in spite of ourselves. Except when we aren't.

It can work. You have to bring some game and stand out from the other schlubs.

I did one month. 6 or 7 first dates, 3 deals closed by the third date. Then I was done. It was a phase.

One thing that astonished me was how many gullible girls would fall for guys they'd never met. One was about to send a con man $10K when her ex-husband caught wind of it and talked her out of it.

Just cutting back your beverages to nothing but ice cold filtered water can make a steady, gradual, but impressive difference. Cut out junk food like chips etc. little stuff like that can really matter.

324 CaliGirl, once you get the sugar rollercoaster out of your system, hunger is not much of an issue. Well, not for me. I have plenty of fat for fuel.

Mark's Daily Apple has some good articles about intermittent fasting and becoming a fat-burner.

Once I did a four-day fast. I felt great; just tired easily although I felt more energetic (does that make sense?)

When I do a 36-hour fast, I get hungry about mid-afternoon and start planning a huge breakfast for the next day and go to bed a little early. Then I wake up and I'm no longer hungry. But I still have a bit of a special breakfast.

OK Morons, help me out. I had a fuse blow tonight, and when I reset it and went to boot my computer, it told me "no hard drive".

I'm going to take it in tomorrow to be looked at. I actually hope
that if it isn't something that can be easily fixed that it isn't the c
drive that fried, reconstructing THAT is a pain in the ass ( made easier
because I have my old c drive from 4-5 months ago that I cloned to a
solid state drive. That'll get me 90% back).

But assuming that I need a a new computer, which would you
recommend? I took a quick look at the Microcenter website and came up
with 2 possibilities. They are only $10 apart in price, so that's not an
issue. Also, forget the OS, I have a license for both Win 7 ultimate
and Win10 ultimate, I'll do a clean install of one of them
(recommendations there? I'm on 7 now, should I go to 10?) just to get
rid of all the crap that comes preinstalled.

First choice is the Acer predator AG-605, specs here:

http://www.microcenter.com/product/444271/Predator_AG3-605-UR1H_Desktop_Computer?ob=1

Second choice is the Dell XPS-8700

http://www.microcenter.com/quickView/451568/XPS_8700_Desktop_Computer?ob=1#BVRRWidgetID

They seem pretty comparable, but the Dell has an extra 4 GB RAM,

all other things aren't equal, what say y'all who know more than me?

Win10 is straight-up spyware. Don't look at the features, don't get technical.....look at the user license. I will not run Win10 even if the alternative is banging rocks together -- and the forced conversion from Win7/Win8? -- just say no.

333 The problem with driverless cars is the loss of the ability to change course in an instant. To take a wrong turn and find a breathtaking view, or find a store you never knew was there. To just start out driving and go some place.

I have been doing this for 4 or 5 weeks. Food tastes better. I make my own salad dressing. Everything has added sugar. I have been reading labels again. It's amazing how much sugar is in things you would never suspect had it.

382 CaliGirl, you may not be getting enough fat. Fat is actually really good for you. The only reason it's not recommended for weight loss is because it packs the most calories of all the macronutrients, but it more than makes up for it in nutritional value and appetite control.

384 OK, herewith Bandersnatch's Guide to Making Match.com Work For You:

1) Your profile has to be unique. Everyone is looking for long walks on the beach and companionship and likes puppies. That doesn't stand out.

I said something like "everyone's looking for compatible interests, here are things I have done which you haven't", and made the list a mix of actual humble things (worked on a garbage truck), humble brag things (I forget what I used, but sort of self-deprecating story about the time I was at the Presidential Palace in Budapest - but more humble, that's not what I used), and slightly outre (posed nude for art classes).

2) Don't wait for pokes and winks and e-mails. You're the guy, you're supposed to be the pursuer.

Match has excellent search functions. How many miles away from where you are; what body type; what level of education; what race; etc.

So, you pick your perfect criteria and you search. You'll find that all of those girls are out of your league. You start relaxing your criteria.

Also, you can search for things specific to you that will resonate. I like camping, but there's nothing about girls the like camping that makes them immediately see a kinship.

I searched for languages spoken, because speaking French and German was my in with a couple of the girls. I forget what other categories are, but you may find a niche where you are strong.

3) Approach them. Study the profile and figure out something unique about them. Write an individualized e-mail. Don't pick up on the main thing. Again, not "I see you like walks on the beaches too". Say, "I see you have a Labrador! I grew up with Labradors, they're the sweetest. What's yours' name?"

Then you'll have some banter. Then you get to "you're really interesting, I'd love to meet you for X", whichever X you're comfortable with.

Don't take rejection personally, they're all screening you. Don't be afraid to cut your losses and bail out either.

I'd look into something like Wordpress, which is the infrastructure for all of the heavy lifting in creating a modern blog with all the amenities. That way you concentrate on aesthetics more than code.

The web today is like any other field of software. Unless you plan to go into the business of selling infrastructure tools, it makes no sense to create your own. Way back when, I could say I know three dozen people who'd written a database program. This was before dBase and when memory was so precious it made sense for those with the ability to code a custom program for the need of the moment. A few years later you wouldn't dream of creating a database program unless you were going into the business. It made far more sense to learn dBase's language than the language needed to code your own dBase.

I use Dreamhost, a host for storage. They have forums and self-help stuff on their website. Good chance that your host has something like that.

To install Wordpress on a hosting service usually only requires a login name and password. Most of them use something called a 'dashboard'. Just poking around your host's site may reveal several avenues to installing a Wordpress installation.

Again, the idea is that since Wordpress is almost a universal option on host sites now, there is more advice on how to install, manage, and maintain one on your host than I could possibly insert here.

Exactly! No third date stuff unless that date was to a wedding chapel. Last time I dated I was 18. Lol, I just realized that even though we got married at 19 (our parents had a meeting and decided that since neither of us was interested in playing the field it was silly to make to horny kids wait) John *wasn't* 19 yet when he proposed. The fact that I was 6 months older than him rarely matters, other than that I was already 36 when he died and he was still 35.

404 The hype of the weight loss business is eating tasty food and losing weight at the same time. It is virtually impossible to eat enough tasty food to fill you up.
One has enjoyed the tidy little meal but is are still hungry.
A more comfortable alternative is not so tasty or attractive food and no hunger; a full belly.

Peanuts, peanut butter (the kind with the list of ingredients: peanuts, less than %1 salt -period), broiled boneless, skinless chicken, tuna, salmon, frozen and canned vegetables, eggs. One can eat these foods stay healthy and lose weight. You can also cheat a little.

Look for the place in the settings where it says "Theme." this is an overall thing you can change to easily alter every aspect of any blog to make it look different (presumably "better."

Find out what "Theme" you currently have. THen search the Wordpress site for other "themes." Choose one, install it, and everything will look as you want it to.

I didn't exactly give up coffee for Lent, but for a Lent-like-period I can have *either* a large cup of coffee with milk and Bourbon Carmel syrup, a glass of wine, or a bottle of beer (which I recently started drinking lately so as to not hate the taste in social situations). Wordpress is like an app; Opera browser or Netscape 1.8. A host is like a computer.

The overriding thing is her host.

If she has a host like Dreamhost or *cough* godaddy.com, she has the ability to change the software through the host's interface.

If her host has Wordpress on their menu of installation options, she can install it, turn on a redirect to the new installation, and not lose a single reader ... (it may take a few hours, but the redirect will be seamless.)

Need to know her host service. And how she advertises to make a worthwhile opinion.

The quickest way is to look for the option 'Appearance' on the left toolbar, drop down to 'Themes'.

That set of themes that shows up are approved by the Wordpress management*. They will almost always work with previous installations. Not always, but most of the time.

If you're looking for more of a configured, custom site, yes, you can get an IT guy get it down to your T.

492 Almost everyone is gone, so if this put me in the barrel it shouldn't inconvenience too many.

Introducing the text of the "About" page of the website.

Knit'n Kitten Fiber Arts is the combination of nearly four decades of needlework experience and a life-long desire to help create a "Safe place for women."

Our mission statement is "Knit'n Kitten Fiber Arts, Inc. of League City, TX is a family run not-for-profit business focused on presenting items from Texas fiber artists, supplies for a broad range of fiber arts, and finished products from a variety of organizations involved in fighting human trafficking or otherwise assisting women to care for themselves and their families with dignity." which I think pretty well encapsulates the "what" of the shop.

The "why" Is because I am a big believer in the "teach a man to fish" version of philanthropy and believe that needlework and human aspiration for a better life fit very well together. This is because producing a competent and marketable item usually requires only moderate physical and mental ability and minimal education or finance yet can be scaled up as resources and ability increase. Handicraft is also an effective therapy tool for those who have been exploited since a reasonable first item can generally be produced in a short amount of time, giving the creator the tangible proof that they can produce something of value and beauty even in the midst of a disastrously broken life. The initial goal of the shop is to provide a market for such items, first here online and then in a brick-and-mortar site in the Houston area, to provide creative as well as job and financial experience to those served by local, national, and international organizations. As the shop grows and there are profits, those profits will go towards things like capital equipment or supply grants for those who already have a funding method as well as helping organizations that are donation dependent find market opportunities that best fit their location and those they serve.

Yes, it is illuminating. I disagree with his thoughts on interest, but have to be honest enough to admit that the reason I disagree is because I'm living on the interest (well, mostly, there's some principle and Aid to Dependent Children in there too) from John's life insurance so I have a conflict of interest there. On the other hand, I had no problem with his theory for why G-d made the husband the one in charge, in fact found it amusing and possibly correct, when I suspect many modern women would be deeply offended by it.

And while we are on the subject of fucking, fuck that fucking asshole
who ran over Aliy and Jeff King's dogs in the Iditarod. He claims he
blacked out drunk, but he made at least four passes at Aliy, so I have
my doubts. Bastard was out to kill somebody and he ended up killing
Nash, who was a very hard working dog and just reaching his prime.

So, I hope the little shit rots in jail, and maybe they should run

557 So let me see if I can accurately summarize the performance of the GOPe's "best hope" up until about 17:00 last night...

1) Got shellacked in his home state
2) Guaranteed Trump wins in IL and MO
3) Contributed substantially to Trump's MOV in NC
4) Got about as many votes in Ohio as "Other"

Carson's final FU to Cruz was to deliver MO to The Donald, ensuring that Cruz gets shut-out which is pretty much the worst result for him.

The worst result for ME is that I just got my first Johnny MailManSon "We Did IT!!!" email this morning. Fvck.

I have to admit that I'm curious about North Korea, just as I was curious about Red China before Tricky Dick started making nice with them. Cultures so totally alien to the Western World hold a certain amount of fascination, after all....
