When I was living in Italy, I didn't know much about my own belief system. I was talking to an old leftist hippy (who was also gay) and I was saying that I didn't want the government to do anything other than national defense and to build roads.
He called me Hitler, very seriously. I was operating under the assumption that fascism WAS some kind of brain child of the right and I was left sputtering about "Of course not because reasons." Not my shining moment for several reasons. I really wish I had just laughed in his face. "Yeah, Hitler was all about creating a smaller state. Right, dude." isn't communism just one form of socialism? Scientific Socialism? The kind where the lefties used to tell us there was no racism or poverty or homeless or unemployment and everyone got free medical care and education?
And doesn't the above illustration suggest that the US was a fascist country until, say Woodrow Wilson's presidency? And doesn't the Coffee party have, typically, three or four people at its meetings? And by the way, that Katie Pavlich article (in the side bar) about the anti-semite at a Trump rally: didn't the lefties once get the brilliant idea of having people attend tea party rallies with signs that smacked of racism and ignorance? I'd wager that a careful examination of enough photos would show some people who have been at Sanders rallies have also been at anti-Israel rallies. Reagan, a closet intellectual, was a big fan of Hayek. Hayek is mostly ignored by American economists today, because he's contra the current left-leaning academic narrative. His mathematical economic work is at odds with current Keynesiasm (Keynes wouldn't be a Keynesian by today's standards).
Hayek had a simple argument in his Road to Serfdom: in addition to being inherently coercive, central planning is sub-optimal because it's not good as free market pricing at processing information in order to make informed decisions. Even when bureaucrats are smart and well-intentioned, they don't always have all the information they need. If they do have sufficient information, they get overwhelmed by it. Free market pricing wins every time, with the exception of the occasional grand military-oriented project. An extension of this idea is that bureaucrats don't like change and won't admit to making mistakes. Compare the private sector: even monopolistic companies that don't change and won't admit to making mistakes will eventually fail. These basic principles explain why the Soviet Union fell. It was part of Reagan's plan. If you understood Hayek, you'd have known that ObamaCare was doomed to fail. A pure single payer replacement will be even worse. A guy as old as Bernie who's lived enough history should know better. I can't understand how a mind like his works. Posted by: Ignoramus at March 15, 2016 12:18 PM (r1fLd) 107

Fascism has only a few identifiable traits.
1. It's nationalistic. 2. It has an emphasis on executive authority over business, private affairs, and property, executed capriciously by executive prerogative. 3. It has little concern for the welfare of the individual as a good as such. Promoting the individual is only an avenue to promote the overall good of the state. It is essentially, at it's core, a flavor of socialism that ascribes to Great Man Theory, rather than the Moral Arc of History Theory. Posted by: MikeTheMoose at March 15, 2016 12:19 PM (0q2P7) 113
All forms of socialism require the coercive power of the state to force the people--at the point of a gun, if necessary--to do that which is against their economic best-interest.
Whether voted on by millions or by the force of a military few--the result is the same: Millions must be stripped of their property, their wealth and--if they resist--their lives, in order for the socialist to deliver on their promises to the poor masses. Posted by: TheJamesMadison at March 15, 2016 12:10 PM (rJSDb) I have a personal friend who is an in-the-know socialist. Not a misguided idealist. A true believer socialist. Got an MBA in Healthcare Management. Talks about how great big pharma is for the market. Very smart guy. Debater in high school and college. Very underhanded in debate. And molded by his mother and father. I remember a moment, probably 2nd or 3rd grade, when his father was driving me and him somewhere and his dad said "It's really all a great circle. Too far one direction and you end up with dictatorship. The left, with communism, and the right, with fascism." A harmless, seemingly magnanimous idea. And it took me over a decade to to realize what a crock that is. They're very close, the socialists, to their goal of ending the discussion altogether. We have to be smart. And we have to work together. Posted by: Ghost of kari - certified inane at March 15, 2016 12:20 PM (xuouz) 119

Even if some of that population is also college educated. ============= One of the reasons I misunderstood it was because of a joke my dad made that I misunderstood as a kid and carried with me for a long time. It was in response to a Simpsons episode. We see a snippet from a McBane movie where the titular hero is fighting Commie/Nazis (obviously meant by the writers of the show as just the ultimate bad guy, not a political statement). My dad laughed at the image and said something along the lines of "That would never happen." I then compounded that with the general consensus and BAM! The idea that Communists and Fascists are completely different took root. Of course, my dad was talking in an A True Believer sense in that Nazis and Commies just hated each other (hence why Hitler persecuted Commies) not that they were ideologically opposed to each other. Posted by: Ignoramus at March 15, 2016 12:18 PM (r1fLd) Somewhat. Hayek recognized that the free market was the best way to deliver every day healthcare, but on catastrophic, he knew that government could and should play a role. From the "Road to Serfdom"... "Nor is there any reason why the state should not assist the individuals in providing for those common hazards of life against which, because of their uncertainty, few individuals can make adequate provision. Where as in the case of sickness and accident, neither the desire to avoid such calamities nor the efforts to overcome their consequences are as a rule weakened by the provision of assistance - where, in short, we deal with genuinely insurable risks - the case for the state's helping to organize a comprehensive system of social insurance is very strong." Let's see now, China is communism + capitalism, that makes them Tom Friedman's favorite country. South Africa is socialism + capitalism, that makes them Ruth Bader Ginsberg's favorite Constitutional source code. Their C guarantees free medical, food, shelter, etc as a right. You don't hear much about them anymore. Venezuela is, according to the above definition, communism. What they are is a failed state, with a barely functioning voting democracy. A guy as old as Bernie who's lived enough history should know better. I can't understand how a mind like his works. It doesn't. Remember, this is the nickelfucker who never had a job in his life until age 40, and spent most of his time - when he could have been providing for his family and being a role model - living out of dumpsters, driving a rusted-out shitbox and being the crappiest carpenter on two legs. Sanders - despite his age - isn't an adult. He's never had to really live with the consequences of his life choices because, all the time along the line, someone has bailed him out, whether it be his imbecile wife or the government. If you imagine your bratty, twerking kid screaming, "you don't know what it's like to be me! I hate you, daddy! I wish I were dead!", you've captured the essence of Bernie Sanders. A rotten, ungrateful punk who's done nothing in his life but suck off the charity of others. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at March 15, 2016 12:36 PM (X6fMO) 225
The ONLY, THE ONLY reason the Commies and the Nazis hated each other was The Reich broke their non-aggression pact and Hitler tried to take Mother Russia by force ==== No. There were plenty of street fights between them prior to the war. Classical Marxism sees conflict in terms of economic class.
Fascism and National Socialism (each in their own way) saw conflict in terms of nation and/or race. Both were Progressive, statist alternatives to clumsy liberal democracy. They were competing for the same anti-liberal constituency; hence the mutual hatred. Neo-Marxism combines the old class war of classical Marxism with the tribal politics of Fascism, to which they have added the gender wars. It's fusionist. The corporatism of Mussolini, which has (technically) private ownership under the constant guidance of the state, has won the day on all sides, even if there are still a few old-time Marxists who want outright nationalization. Good point. Is Trump a closet Hayek fan too?
Posted by: Ignoramus at March 15, 2016 12:38 PM (r1fLd) Probably. When you look at the total dollars spent on healthcare, the vast majority is already run through the government. Medicare for those over 65 and Medicaid for the poor take up the vast majority of everything. Those who are not on a government program and are under the age of 65 rarely ever (as a percentage of the whole population) get sick enough or injured to the point they need catastrophic care. So, moving the expense out of the private sector to the public for this small group is pretty easy. Of course, with every day care, the economics are totally different and F.A. Hayek agreed that should be totally in the free market private sector. Posted by: jwest at March 15, 2016 12:47 PM (Zs4uk) 300

I don't know that they are "very close" to ending the discussion. The first statement is true. Democracy and socialism are mutually exclusive therefore the first statement reduces to Socialism equals Communism, no argument from me, the difference is semantics.
The second statement is true as well. Under Socialism there is no capitalism because the state owns everything. Therefore, the second statement reduces to Socialism equals fascism, again, no argument from me. The last statement, and the photo, actually makes some sense, depending on how you look at it. Democratic socialism, if it can exist at all, is an unstable system that will crash and likely burn at the slightest head wind, witness Venezuela. At the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, there are performers who can juggle while balanced like that....but they don't do it for long. Posted by: JB1000 at March 15, 2016 12:47 PM (16OL0) 302

RE: A convention going to someone like Jeb!.
I just don't buy it. I don't doubt that the political class would try something like this, just that it would be successful this year. In order to believe it, you'd have to believe that a majority of Trump and Cruz delegates would switch over that way. While the delegates are not necessarily supporters of any individual candidate, they do represent a large enough sample from the party to assume that they at least somewhat reflect the will of the party. If 75-90% of delegates are pledged to Trump and Cruz and Bush ends up walking away with the nomination, then the party leadership has much more control over the party than they've led us to believe over the last year. By convention rules that's true. It was always funny, at every convention for the past few cycles, a few Laup Nor supporters would manage to become delegates and you would always have a handful of Laup Nor votes in the final count regardless of what you tried to make it unanimous. There are state rules that may cause consequences for not voting correctly. But there is no mechanism at the convention to prevent a delegate from voting differently than the state election said he/she should. It's called being a faithless elector. It even happens at the Electoral College level. Posted by: MikeTheMoose at March 15, 2016 12:49 PM (0q2P7) 316

Union bosses, corporate owners, leaders of major institutions, all would be incorporated into the state and coordinate with it. Kasich parodied himself. Reminded me of Al Gore. Rush thinks Rubio might stay in to keep Trump's count down. Rush also said convention rules committee GOPe guy is claiming delegates don't have to vote for who they were elected on first ballot. =========== Not possible. I wish the commentators would stop with that lie--that somehow if Rubio an Kasick stay in, they'll siphon votes from Trump. As of today, there are only 1,392 possible delegates to win left. Trump sits at 469 delegates. He wins FL and OH today and he'll have 635. He only needs 1,237 to win a majority on the 1st ballot. That's 602 more delegates, after today. There are, after today, 604 delegates who are from winner-take-all and 120 from winner-take-most states. Near as I can tell, Trump leads in all of those states (except maybe UT). Cruz sits at 370. He needs 867 to win. He has to take almost all of those 724 delegates plus healthy wins in the other states to win. After today, Rubio and Kasick are mathematically eliminated from winning the nomination--there is no possible way they can get to 1,237. And there really wasn't before today. Socialist governments all tend to be dictatorships or oligarchies. Empirical evidence would suggest that the "democracy" part will get dropped on the floor. And democracies by themselves provide no protection for unalienable rights such as life, liberty, and property.
Posted by: Arthur Thread at March 15, 2016 12:51 PM (3EerS) ---- Of course it will. The problem with socialism is goes againt human nature. People want to keep things they view as having earned. Most people are unwilling and toil and produce only to have it taken away and given to nameless faceless others... or worse... sucked up into a morass of bureaucratic over site. The only way to make people go against their nature is by using force. You have to forcibly take their income. You force-ably seize their assets. The higher the level of coercion the more force is required. The other little quirk about human nature is we dont like to be forced and bridle at compulsion. Which is why unfettered socialism invariably leading to camps, killing fields and "reeducation" centers. Or sawed off little shits named Che that like to kill just for the hell of it. Local Empowerment
Local Groups: Every community (area code minimally initially, Congressional Districts and cities ideally) should have the ability to have regular meetings of civil discourse, where education and participation of everyday people thrives. Townhall Meetings: Establish County and City town hall meetings to voice the public opinion. Equal Treatment and Justice: Support and endorse equity in the treatment of people. So it's to be meetings, is it? You know what happens at these rat bastard commie meetings? It's the guys who have the gluteal stamina to sit in meetings for 11-12 hours that finally decide what gets done, after all the sane people have given up and gone home to bed. *These* are the people that will be running things. Probably.
Posted by: jwest at March 15, 2016 12:47 PM (Zs4uk) ---------------------- The problem is mission creep for insurance. Why does Coffee Party consider itself a transpartisan organization when the middle class centric values it advocates are generally defined as Liberal?
A: We're beyond the need for bi-partisanship. What we need a full-scale rejection of partisanship because both parties are plagued by similar issues. We count among our ranks people who may describe themselves as liberals, progressives, Democrats, moderates, Independents, Republicans and conservatives. It is hardly surprising that such a coalition can be built when the need for change is so dire. In the end, transpartistan essentially means transcending parties, not including all parties. See, the conventional wisdom is that both the Nazis and Soviets entered the Non-aggression Pact in order to buy time before fighting each other. But the horrid performance of the Red Army when the Finns kicked their ass in the first part of the Winter War induced the Nazis to invade Russia earlier than planned, because they thought that all that prep work wasn't necessary so let's get to killin' commies and taking their land. On the other hand though, Stalin was appalled enough at the performance of his forces that he began rehabbing the officer corps that he'd purged just a couple of years before. And he managed to do it just barely in time to save the Soviet Union when Hitler invaded. One could argue that if the Nazis had waited one more year, they might have built up enough force to overwhelm a Red Army that was totally led by politically reliable yet incompetent officers. It's not a solid argument, but an interesting "what if". Posted by: IllTemperedCur at March 15, 2016 01:09 PM (o98Jz) 415

The really stupid thing about that picture is that the configuration of balls and sticks is completely unstable. Leave alone that the center of gravity of the balanced balls is above the fulcrum, but once the system is perturbed, the fulcrum itself will roll, leading to accelerated instability. Add in the additional degrees of freedom because the balls can roll sideways, and the whole thing is just ridiculous. That such an arrangement could ever balance is just a fantasy.

The war in the east was lost in 1941. At best the Germans could have held on to what they had but destroyed their army with the campaigns of 1942 and the attack on the Kursk salient. Capitalism is not a system of government, it is an economic system. Communism is an economic system only in that government runs the economy. (in the Utopian communist definition ... real communism is about the government acting like a mafia and murdering anyone in their way, but doing it "legally", if kangaroo courts are "legal") Anyway .. that remark was after one beer, all downhill from here. Hopefully Trump in a landslide so we can get on with destroying the Democrat "commies". Oh, and communism is when Obama/Jarrett mentors/parents join the actual communist party and marry their children together, and by deceit get them in the White House. communism is when you get gunned down with an anti-aircraft gun for making a simple mistake.
SEOUL, South Korea -- In late 2013, Jang Song-thaek, an uncle of Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, was taken to the Gang Gun Military Academy in a Pyongyang suburb. Hundreds of officials were gathered there to witness the execution of Mr. Jang's two trusted deputies in the administrative department of the ruling Workers' Party. The two men, Ri Ryong-ha and Jang Su-gil, were torn apart by antiaircraft machine guns, according to South Korea's National Intelligence Service. The executioners then incinerated their bodies with flamethrowers. Posted by: President Underwood at March 15, 2016 02:17 PM (e8kgV) 472

I disagree with this. Capitalism without Socialism is not necessarily Fascism. It's more akin to Feudalism.
And somewhat counterintuitively, Capitalism without Socialism actually leads to Communism. At least that's the theory. Communism wasn't supposed to happen in Tsarist Russia. It was supposed to happen in Germany. Because, Marx figured, unchecked Capitalism would be so shitty for the working man that they would revolt. Socialism is the salve that makes Capitalism seem like a good idea. Without collective bargaining, socialized emergency and health services and labor laws and all that, Capitalism is brutal. Unsafe labor conditions, child labor, etc. We've been through that and it wasn't good. Mixing socialism and capitalism is what we've had for decades. It works. Socialism has never been a yes or no proposition. It's always been a question of how much. Socialized education? Yes. Socialized fashion? No thanks. Socialized fire departments (we used to have private fire departments and that wasn't so great) is a good thing. Anyone who thinks all socialism is inherently bad and wrong has no idea what they are talking about. Posted by: Seattle Slough at March 15, 2016 03:35 PM (mCz8+) 478
