Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | If You Support Cruz You Shouldn't Be An Idiot To Rubio FansMe? Oh hell no, I'm rubbing it. I take no joy in the sadness of your average Rubio supporter. But when Jennifer Rubin(!) tells Marco it's over and it's time to make your obedience to our new Dark Lord and Master Ted Cruz? Yes, yes I will have another glass of those sweet. sweet tears of despair. We say this with no joy, having credited Rubio with courage on immigration reform and creativity in advancing a credible domestic agenda. He is by far the most electable of the remaining candidates, but to get to the general election one must win the primary. Blame the times in which we live. Blame the media obsession with Trump. Blame the voters who avert their eyes from ominous signs that Trump is a danger to the republic. Still, the choice for Rubio remains what to do now. The answer to many, many Republicans seems obvious.Alternative theory...blame Marco Rubio for backstabbing a significant portion of the conservative base with his lies and a professional Republican political class that wanted as much continuity with George W. Bush as possible for sticking with this guy when it was clear he was a loser. Oh and spare me your demands for Marco to be treated with respect or whatever. He can surrender and be done with it. He's been shutout of delegates in most states over the last week and is in the single digits. He's Jeb Bush but Bush had the good sense to get out before the true humiliation began. I'm not optimistic that these late machinations and endorsement scenarios will happen or even matter. It seems a fairly sizable portion of the GOP electorate actually like Trump and are ready to take the ride. Even if Rubio and Kaisch drop out, there's no guarantee there will be enough crossover to push Cruz over Trump. If Trump picks up 10% between the two of them, he's at or damn near 50% in most places. 5% from each isn't beyond the question. A head to head match up is the best chance Cruz has but it's hard to see him beating Trump 1 v. 1 (or anyone else) in places like NY, PA, CA and so on. There has to be a general movement of #NeverTrump to the real world and as Ace has said many time, "Internet big isn't real world big". The idea that Trump is ripe for the picking is based in hope, not in any evidence we've seen to date. Is it possible there's a general jailbreak against him and people across the country will suddenly say Cruz is better than Trump? Sure. Is it likely? For me this race more or less ended in South Carolina. When Rubio stayed in after going 3rd in Iowa and 5th(!) in New Hampshire, the die was cast. His supporters will say it was one bad debate and had he quit Jeb not Cruz would have gotten his support. Maybe but Jeb wasn't looking so hot either. After IA and NH it was clear Trump couldn't be wished away and action had to be taken to stop him. South Carolina was the chance to unite the right against Trump but Rubio's arrogance and belief he was The Chosen One was all that mattered. And so here we are. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Willowed and vital:
***FLASH***FLASH***FLASH*** Some of you are aware that my sister-in-law (wife's twin) has been beaten and abused by her husband for nearly 20 years. Some of you are also aware that he is armed, unstable and easily provoked. We are all half-expecting the police to call and notify us that he has killed her, the kids, and himself. Today is the end of the beginning. Shelly left Scott [names unchanged because fuck that guy] about a year ago. Since then, she's been fighting a legal battle over custody of her three children (ages 10, 4, and 9 months). For those of you who math on this blog, that means even while pregnant, he was beating the shit out of her. Shelly lived with her mom for a few months and then rented an apartment with her dad to help defray some of the costs. Since she's moved out, Scott has physically threatened several separate daycare providers, forcing Shelly to find new and more expensive care for her kids. Currently, one child is in school and the other two are in separate daycares to minimize the odds that he can find all three of them at the same time. At every step in the legal process, Scott has refused to concede even the slightest fraction of an inch. He has fought, gambled, lied and abused the system designed to protect the innocent and punish the guilty. In doing so, he is attempting to win by out-spending her. He in unemployed, has no education and has not been able to hold a job for more than a year or so in his entire adult life. He is being represented by an acquaintance for free, so he has no financial reason to quit. Shelly wants full and sole custody of her children and has documented a long and colorful history of abuse for the court. The court, though, is slow, and designed with the presumption of innocence at its base. In this specific case, that means Scott can get away with nearly everything until the very, very end. Shelly's cumulative bills have exceeded $100,000. In an effort to defray these bills, our family has dipped into retirement accounts, opened lines of credit and attempted financing. My wife and I have given the money we can along with many, many weekends, helping Shelly around the apartment and donating household goods she needs to stay above water. All of everyone's resources are tapped out. Scott has refused to settle, and this custody case is going to trial. Shelly's lawyer (who is giving her a non-sarcastically great deal) has quoted her an additional $30,000 to cover the trial itself. That money simply doesn't exist. Shelly needs help. She needs it emotionally, spiritually, physically and financially. If you're the praying type, please add her to your lists. If you live in the NoVa area and can donate household goods, please email me (washingtonnearsider at the g mail). If you can help financially, our family has set up a GoFundMe for her to alleviate the costs of winning her children from a violent and abusive man. If you are inclined and able, please consider giving a few dollars. We can't offer anything more than gratitude by way of repayment, but please know that you're helping a desperate woman fighting to save her children. Thank you all so very much. https://www.gofundme.com/michelleneff Posted by: Washington Nearsider, Keeper of the Guards at March 09, 2016 05:04 PM (cv6Ng) 5

The only way for Cruz to win the nom is for both Rumio and Kasick to drop out now. If Rumio leaves and Kasick stays, Rumio's voters will go to Kasick, and vice-versa. I wonder. I'm planning on voting for Trump, but am still considering Cruz, if the possibility of a gope win is removed from the equation. I'm in Illinois, voting next Tuesday with Ohio and Florida, so it doesn't look like I'm going to get Rubio and Kasich out to make that decision easier, but I have to imagine there are other folks like me in states further down the process. So I'm saying I think it's possible once Rubio and Kasich are gone there's some Trump support that may move quietly to Cruz (though it may not be possible when the Rubio/Kasich support moves). The failure in logic is thinking that if Trump is blocked from winning outright and the convention goes to a second ballot, that Cruz has any chance.
The Establishment will not allow it. Cruz is the person the Bush/Romney/Every Senator/All the Old Money hates the most - far beyond Trump. If it goes to a second ballot, the nominee will be Rubio or Jeb! or Mitt or somebody out of the blue. But in no scenario will it be Cruz. You need to accept the truth. Oh, fuck me! Rube on Rube friendly fire? This is even bigger than Erick Erickson, Marco: it's time to just lay down on the tracks and DIE. If Rubio quits before Florida his career in national politics is permanently a laughingstock, and the fact he pissed off a major part of the establishment will shut off a lot of lucrative contracts. Plus, you know, he hasn't done much of anything. Of course, the same is true if he quits after Florida. So really the only predictive constant is the vanity and delusion of Marco Rubio.

Look, in '08 or '12 if there'd been a Rubio we'd have all taken him and been glad.
The problem with that now is that after eight years of utter and complete calamity we expect a more committed warrior. We had the strongest Presidential field since perhaps the founding of the Republic, and what we have left are two freshman Senators and a loudmouth, up against a felon and a crank. Harold Stassen is spinning in his grave. For me it's simple: Trump talks the talk, but I trust Cruz to walk the walk. Posted by: JEM at March 09, 2016 05:19 PM (o+SC1) 92

I'm not sure it will be as hard for Cruz to beat Trump in the northern and western purple/blue states as people say. Sure, that was the conventional wisdom, but shouldn't his win in Maine, his 2nd place finishes in Michigan and Minnesota (where Trump landed in 3rd) say otherwise? Trump's only big wins have been in NH and MA.

Jennifer Rubin and other moderate GOPe squishes think Trump is a threat to the republic but think letting 10 million illegal immigrants vote and letting double that number in legally over the next 2 or 3 decades is not a threat? Holy fuck. It is a true shame that Rubin, Krauthammer, George Will, WSJ editorialists, NRO/Weekly Standard writers, and the rest of the GOPe media class will be retired and content by the time their media outlets fire their English language staff due to lack of demand and when these "natural conservative" Hispanics elect enough Democrats to power to change the US Constitution WITHOUT needing an activist judiciary (which they will of course have immediately after the illegals are allowed to vote).

I used to go to the same store regularly for art supplies back when I had more illustration work and there was this cute college age girl that worked there who I kept catching eye contact with. The last time I saw her in the story she was leaning against a counter and one of the other helpers, a very fay-looking guy her age, was rubbing her shoulders as I bought some Bristol boards. She looked up and we locked eyes and she blushed like I'd caught her doing something very naughty, bright red. Made me wonder what exactly she was thinking. If I'd had any real money, a car, and inclination to date someone I knew nothing about I might have asked her out but that wasn't to be. Something that strikes me about Rubio still being in the race: The righty media has put a lot of blame on CNN, NBC, CBS, Fox News, etc for propping up the Trump campaign with a disproportionate amount of coverage. It seems to me that at least part of the righty media has tried to do the same thing with Rubio, flooding the zone with positive stories, which has kept Rubio in the race (I mean literally in the race, not kept him competitive) when by all other measures he should have dropped out much earlier. Does Trump get too much coverage? Yeah, and so did Rubio. And the result of both cases is that we are now more likely than not going to end up with Trump.

I was listening to some talking head schmuck on the way into work this morning and he was blathering on about how the two things that most amazed him in this election were Trump's meteoric rise and Rubio's inability to get any traction. He attributed all, literally all, of Trump's appeal to his populist appeal and tough talk. He could not figure out a single reason why Rubio was a dead man walking for so long. Not one.
There was not even one inkling in this "expert's" mind (and I don't remember who the hell it was...none of the big dogs, but some one of the conservative pundit class) to perhaps consider the biggest single issue that binds the two together. For all I talk about Cruz being more ambitious than principled, I also think that will bring him back to the Trump side. Again, for the hard-of-hearing, it is not enough for Cruz if Rubio drops out. Rubio's support will just go to Kasick.
--- This is silly. Why would people who backed a guy who opposed Obamacare go for Kasich, who loves it? And why would people who supported Rubio because of his "electability" go for a guy with no path to win the nomination? Cruz would pick up a significant share of Rubio's supporters, particularly if Rubio endorsed him. The reason that these GOPe types who are joining Cruz's campaign matter is that they give permission to others like them to go with Cruz. It has nothing to do with policy, because their objections to Cruz were not based on policy as much as that he wasn't "one of them". It's a preference cascade. And you gotta bear in mind that while Cruz may be too much of a "hobbit" for these GOPe types, the campaign he has run has not been one of those ham-fisted outsider campaigns. It's been run extremely well, which will also reassure GOPe types that he can win. Posted by: Y-not (@moxiemom) at March 09, 2016 05:42 PM (++20t) 225

1-The R field is so split right now compared to the D side that it skews everything. 2-The R field is curently spending 95% of its energy destroying each other and 5% pissing on the Ds. There are tons of conservatives in blue states who get very enthusiastic about casting votes that actually count for a change. A lot of blue states have closed primaries/cauci. If Rubio and Kasich get out before the 15th the ABT coalition takes this thing in a walk and Trump is a funny footnote like Perot (who was inevitable as late as June of 92).

"Trump pretty much has it wrapped up."
Romney & Co "bought" Rubio to go ballistic on Trump through the Florida primary. It's killing Rubio's nice guy reputation and isn't working. Even if Kasich wins Ohio he won't win another state. So, as expected, this will effectively become a two-man race after 3/15. In the most likely scenario, given that the back-end is full of states that are winner-take-all or winner-take-most, Trump wins enough delegates to have a majority going into Cleveland. If Trump should instead collapse, Cruz will win a majority of delegates. I put low odds on Trump and Cruz splitting delegates so that neither has a majority. So if you really wanted to stop Trump (and Cruz) you'd need to have an Establishment candidate jump in after 3/15 to split the vote. If Romney really had any balls that's what he'd do. Yeah I'm not really sure how you quantify how much someone has been attacked or how badly, but it seems to me that Cruz has been facing brutal, angry opposition - mostly from his own party - at least as long and as badly as Trump has.
I would have thought him a bad candidate with no real shot because of his reputation in the GOP plus the public perception of him as this loose cannon madman, but if you look at his polling profile and the voting, he's been on a nearly uninterrupted, gradual upward climb ever since he announced. And that impresses me. Does that mean it would translate into a win in the general election? Heck these days I don't think anyone can even predict what will happen tomorrow in politics let alone months from now. But it is interesting to watch. ----- Yes. I, myself, was sick of this just days ago, and I found redemption in poetry. Can I read you some poetry? Which would you prefer, Tennyson, or Kipling? "The Lady of Shallot" Or "The Ballad of the Bolivar" or even "The Female of the Species". I was quite surprised to read that Henry Major Tomlinson, a noted and well respected anti war writer of the early twentieth century had a rather low opinion of Kipling; called him 'vulgar and facile'. "Here's Trump timeline on promises to reveal his foreign policy team."
Trump has seemed to hire and promote solid, competent people and stay hands-off in his private business ventures. This is unfortunately no guarantee of his hiring and promoting well as POTUS. If you look at Trump's various businesses, the overwhelming majority of them are in real estate and hospitality. It's the same model replicated over and over again. So Trump has developed a good eye for picking people who can autonomously manage real estate and hospitality operations. Unfortunately, a President has to pick people with _widely_ varying skill sets to work in a bunch of departments which are as different as chalk and cheese in what they actually do. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at March 09, 2016 05:58 PM (o98Jz) " Well, LBJ wasn't that well liked. They managed to push him out in 1968, after all. Sure, a lot of that was Vietnam backlash, which wasn't yet an issue in 1964, but I digress. Anyways, I don't think we can use the past as much of an indicator. Things shifted very quickly back then - it was only 8 years after Goldwater lost 44 states that Nixon won 49 states in 1972. In the current electorate, no one is ever going to win 49 states. It could be Zombie Reagan vs. Bernie Madoff or Donald Sterling, and it still wouldn't be that much of a romp. Posted by: broseidon king of the brocean at March 09, 2016 06:47 PM (4/i9Y) 475

Not at all but at this point in time when the country has fallen into complete chaos. With a POTUS who's head is so far up his rear end and a Republican held, conservative Congress that does noting but sign the dotted line on anything that Obama puts in front of them. Then Hell yes I want something different. And a Billionaire who is self funding his campaign who is talking about a good many things that "conervatives" have been raillin on about just fell into our lap at the time when we need him the most. I am hoping for an Independent Party so I can leave this GOP. This isn't what I signed up for when I joined this party. I am not happy with the people who think they are the ones who own the party. His going after Rubio in Florida, admitting that he knows he can't win it and the delegates will go to Trump... that isn't the kind of person I am looking for. Jefferson and Jackson don't belong on that list because the Constitution exempted those born before the establishment of the United States from the requirement. The rest of the list demonstrates that we have been remiss in this matter before now. The, by my lights, atrocious records of two of them, Buchanan and Wilson, argue for the wisdom of the requirement. Anyone who so readily resorts to an ad hominem has no business calling anyone else stupid. Posted by: Brett at March 10, 2016 10:09 AM (0R9fV) 591

Farmer -- me too, everyone I know here thinks Trump is a loony buffoon, although that's probably the professional classes.
My guess is Rubio and Kasich throw IL to Trump, as in Michigan. But when you look at other Midwest states -- Idaho, Kansas, Michigan -- who knows what will happen. If you google GOP primary wiki, you'll see IL has 15 WTA delegates (3 RNC, 12 at-large) and the other 54 are by CD. As I've pointed out elsewhere, that distinction normally doesn't matter too much in primaries because someone wins by 20 and takes every CD. But in a four-way race, two candidates might split the CD. It's hard to imagine the 3rd or 4th place candidates getting anything, so once again this probably helps Trump if he wins with his usual 35%-40%. I'm sorry, I didn't see your question until now. Article II, sec.1: No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. One should notice a distinction is being made between a natural born citizen and a citizen only: no one could be the natural born citizen of a nation that didn't exist yet. Hallucination, my eye.
