34 Of the flicks above named, I've only seen "Mad Max: Fury Road."

It was a bit of a disappointment, consisting of little more than a 2 hour car chase.

The antagonists were quite good - Immortan Joe, The Human Calculator, and, of course The Bullet Farmer.

The clinching homage:

"She is -- at best -- marginally talented for someone who performs on a national level. Even after four years on the job, her delivery, screen presence and interviewing style is decidedly awkward. Her judgment and analysis ... oftentimes laughable."

I have often wondered just how much of an actor's performance was due to the actor and how much was because of the director and the writers.

After many, many hours of research, and at great expense, I've concluded that the actor's talent is an important part of the collaboration.

CO is heavier than air, so stand on a chair and if the shorter ones start to drop, then it's time to open a window. Also, if their lips are cherry red, it's a dead giveaway and probably too late anyway.

No car idling in the garage? Gas-fired water heater has a sound connection to a clean chimney, and has a source of combustion air? Ditto for gas range? Modern homes are so airtight now that all gas appliances need an outside vent to bring in fresh air to feed the fire. Lacking such a vent, gas appliances will consume interior air, and draw down the interior pressure of the house to the point that flue gases get sucked back into the house. That, and the low pressure, lead to incomplete combustion which can emit carbon monoxide.

Yes, not deadly. You can be asphyxiated by CO2 if enough oxygen is excluded, but as it brings on the panting reflex, one usually knows something is wrong, and the need for fresh air is instinctive. CO sneaks up and kills you dead.

And, AFAIK, it's now a code requirement that there be CO detectors in all premises with combustion appliances. Even if not, it's a good idea, anyway, since they are no longer expensive.

I really don't know. After I posted, I thought to check myself, and went to Wiki, and they say that CO is slightly less dense than air, too. And if you have a faulty appliance leaking CO to your home, the flue gas containing CO will be warm, and therefore less dense than the air, anyway. Unless perhaps, they figure the flue gas is mostly CO2, with a few percent CO, and the mixed gas is still heavier than air. But the warmth might overcome that. There's also a lot of nitrogen in flue gases, as it was 80% of the air consumed in the fire.

307 the Oscar's have a staff of writers to come up with jokes to fit current events. These comedians don't just come up with a set in a week. Rock acknowledges he has a couple of writers that worked for him in the past.

I thought it was common knowledge just about all big comedians have writers. Writers be damned, Chris Rock be damned, though, the dialogue here just sucks...for everybody. It really shouldn't be difficult to write good stuff.

Posted by: redbanzai at February 28, 2016 08:57 PM (NPofj)

In short, its just this episodic series of things going wrong and getting fixed with no suspense at all, none of it remotely plausible, and just the worst attempts at humor I've ever seen, with all these ridiculous PC tropes and then there's Matt Damon. Its just horrible. Actually I didn't watch the whole thing.

2. Battery for back up during power failures.
3. Automatic switchover to battery.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 28, 2016 08:56 PM (Zu3d9)

I see two approaches:

1. A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) commonly used for desktop computers. But they don't help much in a prolonged outage, and might not work as expected if power failed, and the pump then tried to start later.

2. Twelve-volt sump pump, say a small boat bilge pump from a marine supply store, coupled to a 12 volt AGM battery, and a "maintainer" type battery charger. Probably cheaper than the first approach, too. Only drawback might be limited pumping capacity.

Very surprised to see the Martian up for awards. It was competently-made, but there was really nothing extraordinary about it. If that's one of the best films of last year, I guess "basic competence" is the new bar for an Academy Award nomination.

Adapted Screenplay: The Big Short. Great job on translating a non-fiction book about Wall Street finance into an enjoyable film. I nearly spit out my soda laughing when Margot Robbie appeared in a bubble bath to explain CDOs.

Director. Inarritu will probably win for The Revenant, but it should go to George Miller for Mad Max. I recently rewatched this on TV. Every shot is a masterpiece of visual and aural composition. Only a little CGI was used. If you told me several stuntmen got killed making it I'd believe you.

My understanding of an air-to-air heat exchanger is that it is functionally identical to the intercooler on a turbocharged car. Basically two isolated streams of air separated by a thin metal membrane, so that outgoing warm, but stale air from inside your house can transfer some of its heat content to the fresh, but cold air brought in from outside. The combustion air intake is a different thing altogether. It's OK for the incoming air to be cold, even bitterly cold, because it all goes into the firebox of the appliance in question.

Electric motors usually do suck a big current on startup, because at zero RPM, there is also zero "back EMF" to oppose the applied voltage. Some machinery now has "soft start" circuitry to alleviate this, but by no means all.

Haven't watched any of the Oscars but I'm guessing Bryan Cranston gets the nod for 'Trumbo', the heroic story of a talented Hollywood screenwriter blacklisted because he was knowingly acting as an agent of influence for a murderous, totalitarian state seeking global domination and the enslavement of humanity.

They'll probably leave that last part out.

Normally I'd say that Redmayne would get it for playing a tranny, but he snagged the award last year.

584 I have so far enjoyed not watching the Oscars and taking a late nap instead. I had no idea they were on today until I met a lady at the mall this evening who was mad her husband was late to pick her up. She wanted to see the red carpet.
I didn't watch a single one of the movies either.
Posted by: chique d'afrique at February 28, 2016 09:45 PM

I walked the red carpet once!
A bunch of friends went to LV to see We Will Rock You. Went to the Hard Rock Café, there was a red carpet for some MTV awards, nothing going on yet.
We left and went to the restaurant. Coming back all were ahead of me so I decided to enter on the red carpet. Well by this time it was roped off and I was walking into a big crowd expecting celebrities.
I just strolled on down and waved, carrying my tourist bag of purchases.
The best was our Brit friend was w/ my wife and when when Jules asked who was on the red carpet she told her...fxxx it's T!

Last year was a banner year for me: Daredevil, Person of Interest, then justified.

I have the feeling though that daredevil is going to suck this season.

I want to personally destroy the Karen Page chick. I find her so so annoying. And I just know she's going to get together with daredevil this season. I just know it. And it's killing me.

I don't think I'm even going to be able to watch it at all until I am assured that such an atrocity will not take place. Yes, I know she was his girlfriend in the comics, but dude, couldn't they have selected a less annoying person to portray her?

There was a movie called "Flight of the Phoenix" which starred Jimmy Stewart, about a cargo plane, with a few passengers aboard, that crash lands in a remote part of the Sahara desert. They take the wreck apart, and build a single-engine plane out of the pieces, and strap themselves on the wing, and Jimmy flies the contraption back to civilization.

668 From Mr. Hannibal Lecter himself:

"Dear Mister Cranston,

I wanted to write you this email - so I am contacting you through Jeremy Barber - I take it we are both represented by UTA. Great agency.

I've just finished a marathon of watching 'BREAKING BAD' - from episode one of the First Season - to the last eight episodes of the Sixth Season. (I downloaded the last season on AMAZON) A total of two weeks (addictive) viewing.

I have never watched anything like it. Brilliant!

Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen - ever.

I know there is so much smoke blowing and sickening bullshit in this business, and I've sort of lost belief in anything really.

But this work of yours is spectacular - absolutely stunning. What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production. What was it? Five or six years in the making? How the producers (yourself being one of them), the writers, directors, cinematographers, every department, casting, etc., managed to keep the discipline and control from beginning to the end is (that over used word) awesome.

From what started as a black comedy, descended into a labyrinth of blood, destruction and hell. It was like a great Jacobean, Shakespearian or Greek Tragedy.

If you ever get a chance to - would you pass on my admiration to everyone - Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, R.J. Mitte, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Steven Michael Quezada - everyone - everyone gave master classes of performance. The list is endless.

Thank you. That kind of work/artistry is rare, and when, once in a while, it occurs, as in this epic work, it restores confidence.

You and all the cast are the best actors I've ever seen.

That may sound like a good lung full of smoke blowing. But it is not. It's almost midnight out here in Malibu, and I felt compelled to write this email.

Congratulations and my deepest respect. You are truly a great, great actor.

Best regards,
Tony Hopkins."

669 652 It's really awesome that black millionaires and almost billonaires are down with the black lives matter stuff.

It reminds me of all the millionaires and billionaires supporting Bernie, mostly thinking he can't possibly win so they look good without taking any actual risk of government stealing their dough.

Scum of the earth hypocrites.

670 BB is hands down the best series ever done. Maybe on episode out of like 60 was a tad slow. That's hard to do.

It's the perfect story arc of good to bad and the wages of your choices. It's quite incredible.

I've rewatched the series probably four times already and will probably see it again many more times. It's just that good.

673 "There aren't really any good guys on Breaking Bad." There's one good guy, and the whole story builds to the point where the gathering evil finally kills him.

It's a good series. I recommend it. The characters are very deeply detailed. It's hard to justify spending 60+ hours watching a drama, but if you're going to do it, this one is worth it. Sopranos too.

I agree, the violence was over the top for the first few episodes and I wouldn't have continued with the show if they hadn't toned things down. But the violence bothers me more than the sex. One is more seductive and much more likely to influence him. That's just how I feel about it. But if they get back to the level of violence of the first few season 1 episodes, I won't be watching either.

762 I am in the process of working my way through a documentary called Red Empire. I saw a portion of it way back in '95 for my class on Russia in World War II. It is quite good and really should be one of the things high school students are shown in history class. It covers the revolutionary period in Russia, through Stalin and beyond. It uses archival film footage throughout and interviews people who lived during the revolution and through the Stalinist purges (the documentary was done in 1990.)

It is available on youtube. The transfer is from VHS and most of them seem to have sound sync issues. Still it is a very good and chilling commentary on socialism. Here is the link:

789 After who knows how many years, Mrs. Squibob changed from the Academy Awards to AMC-HD after listening to about 5 minutes of Chris Rock talk about how there should be Black categories. Not she knew if Rock was being facetious.
