The Happiness Thread [FenelonSpoke]

Introducing "The Happiness Thread", where people get to share things that make them happy or add enjoyment to their lives.

Anything that makes you smile or laugh or allows you to appreciate simple things in life are welcome. Consider this thread as a breather from contentious political threads. Your aid in keeping this a non political thread will be greatly appreciated, and I greatly thank CBD for getting it set up.

In the descriptive blurb to Dennis Prager's book on happiness, Prager asserts that we're actually obligated to be happy, because it makes us better people. Achieving that happiness won't be easy, though: to Prager, it requires a continuing process of counting your blessings and giving up any expectations that life is supposed to be wonderful. "Can we decide to be satisfied with what we have?" he asks. "A poor man who can make himself satisfied with his portion will be happier than a wealthy man who does not allow himself to be satisfied."

In this short video, Prager says that happiness is a moral issue:

Here are some other thoughts on happiness:

"Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be."

-- Abraham Lincoln

"It isn't what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it."

-- Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People

FenelonSpoke mentioned that this is a non-political thread. It's also a non-grumpy thread. Going off topic is fine to tell a nice story with a sweet ending, or just something pleasant. But grousing and grumping and grouching and grumbling is off limits. [CBD]

2 This early Springtime is making me happy! It's glorious outside in Oklahoma!!! But, as Oklahoma weather tends to be fickle and frankly ridiculous, I fully expect a full-on blizzard in July.

Also, I get to go to a rally for Marco Rubio tonight! OK has always been a fly-over state, but now that we're a Super Tuesday state candidates are actually stopping by. Should be interesting.

21 My cat is healthy and super friendly. He follows me around the house and sleeps nearby. I'm not sure what is going on in his furry head but he seems to like my company a lot. That makes me pretty happy.

I got two new reviews on my novel Life Unworthy, both very positive. And they were unsolicited, as in I didn't contact a reviewer or ask for them, they were just from buyers. That made me feel really good today. Its kind of irrational but that's how it is as an author. You put your work out there and hope, but only reviews and word of mouth let you know if anyone likes it. My primary intent was to get people to compare the evil of the Nazis with the evil within the Werewolf and readers seem to be getting that. That means so much to me I almost bust into tears reading reviews. I know, its dumb.

I worked at a video store during college that had a porn section and we got a wide cross section of the university. I had two chemistry profs who came into the store:

The one was known to be two things- an asshole and a cheater (he had cheated on his wife with one of his TAs. He rented porn.

Later, another professor, who I respected immensely came in, and my heart sank. Then he rented two children's movies that had not been rented in years. Brought a smile to my face.

70 This story about The Rock made me happy:

Last week on our very last day of shooting Ballers, my security came over and said "There's a few officers who've worked for us all day and would love the chance to meet you. One of them has a personal story to tell you." I said I'd love to meet them and walked over to say hello. I shook hands with both men, took pictures and they graciously said goodbye. As I was walking away, I realized I didn't get the personal story.

So I called back to one of the officers and said "I heard you had a story for me?" He was surprised and turned around and called for him and said "Sure Mr. Johnson". He told me in 2008 when I was taking my mom to get her weekly chemotherapy and radiation cancer treatments, he was taking his dad at the same time - who had been diagnosed with the same cancer as my mom. He said, "You won't remember this but we walked into the hospital at the same time and you turned around, smiled and held the door open for my dad... and you have no idea what that moment meant to him. And me."

Officer Arias shared with me that he'd been waiting years to tell me that on that day, after I shook his dad's hand and told him to stay strong, that his dad felt no pain that day. And was once again was a happy man and pain free. Even if just for one day. Mr. Arias passed away from cancer later that year, but his life continues to tell an inspiring story.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson: huge gentleman.

Curious what is it that MLB is doing....are you talking about the "make things faster" changes? I dunno, I kind of like that. I used to like baseball but these days I can't watch more than a couple of innings before I have to turn the channel. Part of it is because it's so damn slow. It's probably because everything else in life now is instant and on demand, 20 seconds in between pitches seems like an eternity.

100 Curious what is it that MLB is doing.

The main things are the removal of the low strike (probably be ignored by pitchers), the change in slide rules to try to protect players from injury because after 100+ years of baseball suddenly everyone is made of glass, and the timeouts rule. Plus, rumors they want to force the DH on the National League.

Baseball is a summer sport and its supposed to move along gently, not explosively and fast. If they want the game faster, they should enforce existing rules about time between pitches, leaving the batter's box, high strikes, and get rid of that @$(*@&$(@# instant replay rule.

104 Great idea getting folks to focus on happiness.

Happiness is a direction, not a place ( a quote I have on my desk)

If you take the time to think about how blessed you are it can be like that children's book "if you give a mouse a cookie". I"m grateful and happy to have a roof over my head, my health, a good marriage, great kids, nice friends. Electricity, clean water, red wine, my sight and books to read, my siblings ...

Thanks for the reminder of all the things that make me happy!!

107 Good thread Fen. I love Prager's take on happiness and used to love his "Happiness Hour" when I could listen.

Like his premise that happy people tend to not start wars too.

Facebook has a lot of crud but also you see some nice sentiments. One recent one said: "You are given a life, it's up to you how good it is" or close to that.

Prager says happiness is a choice and I like that too.

141 Teh Horde maka me da happy. And the ONT pickles what remaining sanity to which I might make valid claim thereof.

Putting a whole box of fifty rounds of .38 into the "X" ring of a B-27 target at seven yards, fired double action, of course. No dropped rounds, no flyers. Just one ragged 1" hole.

Cooking the perfect sirloin, dead-on medium rare. (sorry, Chemjeff!) And of course, subsequently devouring said steak.

Newcastle Ale. Jim Beam Bourbon, poured neat.

Good music played on a very high-quality stereo.

Engrossing books.

The results of my workmanship here at the house. I could put this place in a Martha Stewart magazine, insofar as build quality, fit and finish.

This afternoon's weather. On the porch with a Newcastle and a fine cigar. Sublime.

My cats.

My ladyfriend.

My Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.

And not the least.

Fenlon's contributions and presence, gracing us here in this house of somewhat questionable repute.

Having a Daddy who loves you, I am finding out through others, is a big deal. It also helps you choose a mate wisely (or, worked for me).

Daddy's who love babies are a huge thing to women. I have told you single dudes, don't take the dog for a walk, take your niece or nephew to meet singles. ha.

159 "you tell I love baseball and that it makes me happy?"

Just a little. Haha. I love baseball too. If you've never done it, spring training is a lot of fun.

Have I told my story about meeting Jon Daniels in Surprise?

We were at the game with our then 3 children. It was day 3 of our trip and we were getting pretty ragged from so much baseball.

The kids needed something so I took the whole crew to go to the bathroom. I'm wrangling kids and my then 3 year old crashed into someone.

"Oh, sorry!" I exclaimed. I didn't even really look up.

"It's ok, you've got your hands full" he said

Then I did look up and realized who I was talking to and desperately searched for a snappy comeback.

Unsuccessfully.

"Haha, yeah" I said and walked away.

That lame conversation still made my husband jealous of me though. Teach him to send me off alone with the kids!

Thanks. My one piece of advice to parents? Don't be your child's Best Friend. Save that for when they're grown and have not f*cked their lives up.

I became immune to hearing, "I HATE YOU!" when he was young. Too bad, Sport. I'm not your pal.

The reward is you and your spouse becoming two of your kid's best friends later.

I'm happy that RDJ is now off my dead pool list. If you'd told me in the early 2000's that he would be one of the biggest action stars on the planet, to say nothing of alive, by the end of the decade, I would have laughed in your face.

A friend of mine who is a shrink told me this shortly after my daughter was born.....everything you do as a father is what your daughter will look for in a boyfriend/husband. So you as a father have the power to essentially pick your daughter's future husband. Act like an asshole and she'll marry and asshole, act like a good person and she'll marry a good person. And that has always stuck with me and I consciously think of that on a day to day basis when interacting with her. And it's not just what you do directly with the daughter, it also matters who you treat her mom since it all gets internalized by the daughter.

Jane, my daughter is deaf w/o hearing aids and the aids weren't advanced enough until about 10 years ago. (She's late 30's) I had to be tough on her from the start, wanted her to beat it, not be coddled over it since I knew that wouldn't happen in the real world.

Get me out in the woods where there are no politics, no DOOM, no sirens and billboards and screaming kids and honking horns and high tension lines and all the other crud that mucks up my brain, and I am a happy WhatWhatWhat.

*** Note: A "fucking stick" is not a penis but rather a short pointed stick with an L-shaped handle used to make depressions in the mud into which seeds can be dropped, and is indeed likely to be the origin of our term "fuck." The sound is thought to be onomatopoeic, as the slight suction as the conical point is removed from the mud makes a "fffuck!" sound. I actually use a fucking stick to plant in the springtime. For real.

Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrödinger were driving down a road.

Heisenberg was at the wheel.

Soon a cop pulled them over. Walking up to the car, he asked Heisenberg, "Do you know how fast you were going?". To which he replied, "No, but I know exactly where I am.". Confused, the cop said, "You were going 100 miles per hour!!". Heisenberg then cried, "Great, now we are lost!!"

Nonplussed, the cop ordered both gentlemen out of the car and proceeded to search it. When he got to the trunk, he opened it. "Did you know you have a dead cat in your trunk?" He asked. Schrödinger replied, "We do now, asshole!"

288 This weekend my daughter and her 3 year old son were over. My allergies are really bad and we've had a warm snap that causes them to act up. Anyway, Grandson and Nana decided to take a nap (well Nana decided to take a nap). Grandson is watching Paw Patrol on the Ipad. I doze off. I wake up to a very soft, repetitive tapping on my leg and my Grandson making a really loud snoring noise. As I wake up enough to look at him, he quits patting my leg with his foot, makes a loud snoring noise, tilts his head towards the Ipad, looks back at me and shrugs.

I just had to laugh. It was a cute way of making Nana wake up and quit snoring. I did, however, send him to his Mom so I could finish my nap in peace... sort of.

I'm glad you do that, that is lovely. I didn't have that growing up, sadly, so I have looked my whole life to other men to show me what a father and husband can be like.

I'm working on a project for one such person. We were talking about it yesterday, and at the very end he smiled and reached up and kind of patted the side of my head lovingly. I almost cried. Such a kind gesture from such a wonderful person.

You can influence people not your kin. I am so grateful for these men in my life and the example they have set for me. It has made all the difference.

Then I laid back down and started laughing my ass off--still half asleep. I didn't know whether I'd dreamed that or whether it actually happened, but I thought it was a funny thing to say anyway.

She came over and sat next to me, big smile. Still laughing, I turned over and said "Did I just say 'you're a noise pig'?"

She said, "You just said 'noise pig.'"

We both laughed and laughed.

389 Oy! Really?

Is this supposed to be ironic, being on a Monday? Isn't this "weekend" material?

Other than the weekend, which is already crowded with good stuff like books and food and gardening and pets, I usually don't have time for participating in midday threads. ... I suppose that might make some folks happy...

This concerns me. What are the rules? Would snarky, cynical, or ironic humor count as happiness? And dirty joking and sexual innuendo, lotsa folks find "happiness" in that (but it's mostly Overnight Thread material)? And what about puns, which make people snort or groan, as a rule, not laugh out loud. This all just seems so... out of place with the usual mood of the AoS locker room.

Which, of course, is why FenelonSpoke has it here, right? Right.

Wait, is my comment "grousing and grumping and grouching"? Would hate to be banned from the happiness thread!!

Well, okay, we'll see how this works out.

394 the only thing between me and happiness is 50 or 60 IQ points...

if i could lose them, and not remember i'd had them, i'd be like the members of the narod that surround me, happy, cheerful, and worried only about who's getting voted off the island, or advancing on DWTS, and all the other BS programming on the vidiot.

i'd believe everything i read or heard on the news, and think that not only is the economy doing great, but that the SCOAMF was the bestest Present-snit evah, and Hillary was going to be even better.

IOW, i beg to disagree with Dennis: there is nothing moral in lying to yourself, and others, in pretending that things are great, or even decent.

you may have personal things like kids, or what have you, that you receive solace from, but that's not the same thing as "happiness"...

if you take an honest look at the world around us, we're in great danger, individually and as a society. i refuse to delude myself that i'm "happy" when there's no grounds to do so. there are things that i enjoy doing, but they're more of a temporary diversion from the sense of doom that pervades our time than a source of happiness.

as i'm fond of saying, "Ignorance is bliss and I'm surrounded by happy people." YMMV.

401 @382...I referred to this 5% as "raising chimpanzees in the wild."

I am glad my mother and grandmother's saved my letters or I would have forgotten a lot of what they said, etc. My youngest, frustrated at 2yrs with his big brother stepping on his quiltie (which was an entity and had an ARM), bit the crap out of his brother's arse. (I found out about the stepping on quilt's arm after the screams and dust settled in the playroom). He got one of his rare diaper swats, as he was and is a charmer and funny as can be (we would be having to hide laughter with discipline). Anyway, I wrote to mother that his brother, needless to say, did not turn the other cheek!

For all of you parents out there with young kids: get a journal and write down what they say. You won't regret it and I wish I had. Without these letters I would have forgotten when this same biting son decided to smear toothpaste in the fish aquarium. Or his brother, after buying roller skates and falling often (at 4 or 5, when kids have wisdom), that "his feet were running away with his imagination." xoxo

404 My mother has a friend who serves with her on the board at our Senior Center, and this woman has had some problems recently: she lost her husband to Alzheimer's, her daughter's going through an ugly divorce, she fell down and was unable to even go outside for over two months. Nice lady going through a really rough patch, but never complains.

The grandchildren screwed up her two computers and she was at wits end so she called me, knowing that I dabble in such things. I spent 4 enjoyable hours in this woman's home a few days ago, was able get her computers back in order, and even ended up rewiring her giant entertainment center. She gave me a pan of fresh brownies as payment when I left.

Today there was a meeting at the Senior Center; the woman was very complimentary of my work and expressed her gratitude to my mother. I got out of tech support 15 years ago with severe burnout because of people who were mean and angry, but now I have become the go-to computer guy for little old ladies in our small community. Some can afford to pay and some cannot; it doesn't matter. Helping people is good for them and good for me. Mom's pretty stingy with compliments, but today I could tell she was proud of me, and that makes me happy.

444 When I first heard Dennis Prager talk about happiness as a choice and how some people simply choose to not be happy. I thought huh - who would ever choose to not be happy!?

But over the years I come to see that yes some people are very much attached to their unhappiness - almost to the point of it being part of their identity. They usually see it as a badge of some sort, showing that they're more aware or committed than other people. They're wrong of course but for the most part their wrongness only hurts themselves.

Yeah, Prager's definitely on to something. It's easy to be happy when things are going well or uneventful, but the real challenge is finding happiness when you're dealing with curveballs. I recall one time sitting in the chemo lab with my husband and trying so hard not to laugh as I scrolled through comments on some snarky Obama post on AoSHQ. If anyone ought to know about unhappiness he should, but he wasn't unhappy. I have read both of his books "He Leadeth Me" and With God in Russia, "He Leadeth Me is the more spiritual book. At any rate there is a section on that website called Meditations (I think it's the one about clay vessels) where he talks about how we respond to thing being something that's left to us when everything else seems to be taken away. 530 the momma feral cat that inevitably makes a nest of kittens every year in my hay barn just brought me a tiny grey and white kitten. She dropped it into my lap so proudly and let me hold her until the little one realized a Giant was cradling her in her enormous paw. when the tiny one cried, she took her back and looked around for a safer place to put her while she at her breakfast, settled on a spot in the stall we keep junk in, behind a sink Grimmy isnt using. Throughout the day i saw her moving more tiny bundles, but it always makes me feel so happy and special when she brings me the first one, like a new mom showing off her handiwork. "I made dis!"

its like she either want me to see her favorite, or the one she doesn't mind me looking after while she gets the others. But i feel enormously proud that this otherwise very wild cat always trusts me to bring her breakfast and watch her kitties when she isn't there.

the other thing that makes me happy is my new stallion. Hes a bit of a psycho rapist but a damn fine specimen and i cannot believe that after wanting him for fourteen years, he is finally mine. wow. just watching him out to play makes me feel awesome, hes a close to perfect as a horse gets and is still real. The babies next year will be epic.

546 I live in So Cal and we actually had one day of heavy rain this year. I was down with a migraine and my daughter's teenage friends, whose own backyards were flooding, made an extra trip to the fire station to get sandbags for our yard, which they carried back and put in place, with cold rain pouring down on them. It makes me happy that not all young people are selfish, entitled brats, and in particular that my daughter has friends who will come through when it counts.

I used to collect all those postage paid lap tags that fell out of magazines and just toss them in the mail every so often. They only pay when it gets mailed back, not filled out. Have it back... at your expense!

557 Thanks for the suggestions all.

My situation is more complicated because I admit I'm talking about my mom, who I am still way too dependent on.

What frustrates me most is, I've taken major steps to become more independent, *and* pull my weight a lot more here at home. The truth is, we need each other.

So it's not like I can just say "screw it, I'm leaving." It's to the point that oftentimes I can't even leave the house at night, because she "gets scared."

Right now I am working on both saving for a *nice* car, and fulfilling some personal and professional dreams (which is why I've been talking about the movie I want to make). I also hope within five years to be a lot more secure and indepdnent financially, although I still won't be anywhere near "rich."

I'm going to continue working on those things. It's just that my mom is controlling and frankly oftentimes refuses to acknowledge the steps forward I've taken; she still oftentimes insists on treating me like I'm still 13 when my parents' favorite phrase was that I "don't have any common sense." Sigh. She also loves to portray herself as the victim of everyone and everything and me as one of the monsters she has to deal with, even though I know I've gotten far better at treating her well and with respect.

So anyway, again, your suggestions are welcome. :-)

Heh.

Back in the olden days when The Gipper was POTUS, I was on my battalion rifle marksmanship team and we used to share the Known Distance range with the machine gun team during training. We'd pull targets for them, they'd pull targets for us. Of course, the M60s put a lot of rounds into the berm, and for close to two weeks we spent half the day being showered with dirt.

Then some comedian talked us rifle guys into getting a little payback on the last day of training. So we did a course of fire where EVERY 5.56 round was fired into the berm. Our big mistake was that we had to pull targets for them later. For some reason, when we walked past each other while switching places, every one of those guys had an evil smile on their face.

Those bastards must have dug trenches in the berm with those M60s, there was so much dirt coming over into the target pits.

I have this issue. I am not like anyone in my family. My Dad accepts that I am myself and things that make me happy are very strange, but he can in many ways relate to what makes me tick. He actually arned Grimmy because he liked him to never underestimate me and just because i am crazier than a shithouse rat, I am NOT stupid ...and when hurt, i WILL get you. Eventually. Dad loves and respects me, likes to see pics of my kittens, horses and my roses. He is glad to call Grim his friend. We even talk about restoring cars together. I want him to help me with a 73 Ford Superduty, thats just waiting in the driveway for his attention.

Mom doesnt know me, has no clue what make me tick and tries to control me much to my dismay. I have had to move far enough away to make this impractical, and have essentially banished her from my house. Even when it looked model perfect after a remodel she found things to complain about and even yell at me over. (who yells at people over choices in bedroom art?) I have found in her case, good fences make good neighbors. the less she knows about what i do with my horses and my cats, the better. We dont talk about the truck, she doesnt know i have it, or that I plan to play car with dad. If she knew, she would flip out. Because: Reasons!

people like that you can only handle with extreme tact and distance.

582 One of the reasons I hate the way the country is going so much is that the rest of my life is going so well. I think I'll just focus on.

1. A year and a half ago I married the best woman I've ever known outside of my dear ol' departed mum.
2. We're having our first baby, a daughter in June. About once a day I think about her and have to fight back tears of joy, at work.
3. Speaking of work, I love what I do and I'm good at it (I'm a Sr. IT engineer, I.E. if Hillary had called me, and Hillary wasn't Hillary, we wouldn't be talking about her email server right now). I just started a new job for a boss that's also a great friend, someone I've worked with for over 10 years and it was a 40% raise.

I'm literally living my American dream, right now, as the country goes in the fucking toilet. I feel something akin to survivor's guilt about it.

a while back, I started doing some research on personality theory. I really like the Myers-Briggs stuff. It can help you see you own traits in a different way, and be more tolerant of others. People are who they are, and if we accept that, and not think they're being vindictive or uncooperative, it makes life a bit easier.

I know that Dennis has talked quite often about the difference between happiness and fun and enjoyment. Fun and enjoyment tend to be event-driven and transitory while happiness (in the contentment and satisfaction sense) is more long-lasting and independent of particular events.

And in practice there's a bit of tension between them. Adam Carolla often points out that all the people he knew growing up who focused only on having fun and enjoying life at every moment have actually ended up with not very happy lives whereas the happiest ones are the people who were willing to forego daily fun to pursue their goals.

638 This is my first time commenting. Although, I am a longtime reader, or a lurker as we seem to be called. This happiness thread pulled me in.

In the past two years I returned after nearly 20 years to riding my road bicycle a lot. I am now riding on Saturdays and Sundays with long-time meet ups of riders at a Trader Joes or a local bicycle shop. On Saturdays the meet up at Trader Joes takes place at four points in time in the morning. I usually ride the 7:45 am ride and we will have at least 25 riders in our group. Riding in a group and drafting the riders in front of you is an adrenaline rush that is hard to describe. What is truly amazing is that riders of every age, culture, gender, and income come together with most of us not knowing the others and participate in this 30-plus mile bike ride. So for the two hours we ride together we are a casual brotherhood, sisterhood, or just being decent humans enjoying the same experience.

About six months ago I had a rider in front of me accidentally take out my front wheel causing me to go crashing into a parked car and sliding on the street. The entire pack of riders stopped, and several helped me get myself and bike together to continue on. I will never forget that these folks I do not know all stopped and made sure I was okay and would not continue on until I was ready and could go as well.

So, on the weekends I have a couple hours on Saturday and Sunday where I share an experience with for the most part strangers, and we can do so without caring about our many contrary classifications or our views and beliefs. It is a very happy feeling that as crappy as the world is, and as disappointed I am in how our country is going into the crapper that a simple bike ride gets all of us adversaries to look at each other and say isn't this fun? And, I'll see you next week!

Then I return to considering them on the wrong side of most issues...

639 We are a lot happier without having the stepson around. He's disrespectful to his dad. And every time he shows up, he starts telling us how to do stuff. Most of the time, he doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm not willing to put up with it. We aren't going to reorder our lives for him. So he's out on the Oregon Coast and we are where we are.

If there is one thing I don't like, it's ungrateful people. I would love to have him on good terms with his dad, but I can't change his attitude.

641 How I feel after a good long run or bike ride. I work out a lot and being outside and working out makes me happy.

It also makes me appreciate my good health. At age 45, I am fit and haven't a pain in my body. I know it won't last forever. I'm really thankful for my health; we rarely appreciate it until it's gone.

666 Okay, acting happy/nice is basic social etiquette NOT a moral obligation!! If I acted like an ass or an unpleasant person in my work I would lose clients and make no money. Good service comes with a smile. I try to smile and put up a front at home and at social gatherings and functions because again, social etiquette. I want people to feel like I am approachable. I am also nice/happy to assholes that I can't stand because I interact with them daily or they are respected in my community. Why are they respected? Cause they have money or wield influence and in most cases have both, in reality they are obnoxious as are most of the people that I interact with. I'm not going to lie Christians can be some of the biggest fakes that I know, by all means lets continue to be friendly and approachable, it's a big part of being successful in life. But if you want something to be a moral obligation, it should be a desire for more considerate and thoughtful connections with people to sense when their putting on a happy face for show and then actually trying to help them in their time of suffering. There are people who really do have very little to be happy about.

Did you catch the distinction between sharing your feelings with those close to you (good) and inflicting your moods on them (bad)? Have you ever dealt with a kid upon whom parents inflicted foul moods over and over again?

I think you are right that cultivating considerate and thoughtful connections with people so you can help them in times of suffering is a good thing. Don't think Prager would disagree.
