Quote of the Day - Hopper PBUH Edition

12 I'm sorry Ace, I love your analysis and commentary but this fawning over Dennis Hopper is silly, to be generous.

Posted by: MrPaulRevere at May 30, 2010 02:19 AM (BP0+R)

13 Actually, I do worship Dennis Hopper, and I mean that quite literally.

I believe he is a god. Not THE God, but a god. Like Apollo.

I have a big shrine to him. I do coke because he did. I call it the coke-shrine.

Quote of the Day

Lefty loosie, righty tightie, and wash your hands before eating lunch was the entire plumbing handbook when I was a kid. The appendix held one one additional piece of advice: Water always runs downhill. Wanna bet?

When the clocks run backwards, when the sun rises in the west, when the lion lays down with the lamb, when politicians start telling the truth, when water doesn't run downhill, when the laws of supply and demand are revoked -- supplying finless brown trout to the porcelain gods and demanding that they go away -- that's when you know you're in for it. You got existential trouble there, Camus, I'm tellin' you.

I don't think I can accurately describe what that geyser of excrement in the carhole meant to me at that moment. It was literally an existential threat.

-- Sippican Cottage in Interestingly, 'Geyser of Excrement' Is the Name of My Tears for Fears Tribute Band. But I Digress

Is Twitter Silencing Conservatives?

In addition to shadowbanning Twitter is now stripping verified accounts of their verification with no explanation. Presumably for some unnamed offense but how does an offense possibly make you stop being yourself? And these new tactics on the part of Twitter seem primarily focused on conservative users.

My Verified blue check is gone! IT'S GONE!!!!!!

Furthermore as Ace mentioned in the sidebar Twitter has created a new "Trust and Safety council" to police tweets and stocked it with a rogue's gallery of SJW-types. Including Anita Sarkeesian, GLAAD, and Islamic activist groups among others it's like the UN Human Rights Committee of free speech opponents on the internet.

RSM (@rsmccain) Banned From Twitter

With no explanation given as usual. At this point I think we've moved beyond coincidence and are heading into enemy action territory.

today on weaselzippers:
Harry Reid and the powerful Culinary Workers Union were huge players in Hillary Clinton's victory Saturday in Nevada's caucuses.

Clinton racked up big wins in caucuses held in six major casinos on the Las Vegas strip, which helped her roll out a big majority in Clark County, home to about three-quarters of the state's registered Democratic voters.

Reid, the Senate minority leader and longtime Nevada Democratic political pro, encouraged the head of the Culinary Workers Union to get casino workers to turn up at the caucuses, according to The New York Times.

"He's been extremely cooperative," Reid told the Times about union head D. Taylor. "Probably 100 organizers will be at the caucus sites and in hotels to make sure people know what they're doing."

While Reid is officially neutral in the race, veteran Nevada political journalist Jon Ralston said it was clear he wanted Clinton to win and was worried that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) might pull off an upset.

I kind of liked the idea they did a couple years ago where they did alternate timelines for each story. So for the original, Luke misses on the Death Star. It delays its laser so most of the rebellion is able to escape, but Leia gets recaptured and is turned to the Dark Side while Luke and Han wind up going to Dagobah. For Empire, Luke dies in the night with Han on Hoth. Him and Leia end up going to Dagobah. I forget what the twist was for the Return of the Jedi alternate though.

72 "when the laws of supply and demand are revoked"

yeah well, I wish they'd quit talking about economics as if they are absolute laws like gravity. Mostly it is complex theory, somewhat useful in decisions or deception.

The real laws of taxation, sanctions, mandates, fairness, bribery, borders, safeguarding belief systems, mob threats, commie infiltration ... so many other things dominate the equation that pretending "supply and demand" is a perfectly measurable "LAW" is ridiculous.

This "law" has been abused most to push global "free trade", where CEOs make millions by acquiring cheap slave like labor from our enemies, that pollute, lie, cheat ... but they don't care. Levin says the economics laws are like laws of physics. Nope ... gravity has precise measurability, globalist trade does not.

The free traders are globalists disguising their crap in some Utopian dream. The glorified "comparative advantage" has many qualifiers, which negate all the alleged benefits the free traders have been promising would be so marvelous. It has been one big scam from the start. Put America First ... how hard is that?

For Empire, Luke dies in the night with Han on Hoth. Him and Leia end up going to Dagobah. I forget what the twist was for the Return of the Jedi alternate though.

83 Heyooooo, Horde!

Just in case Brent is around is needs to know who we pissed off today...I pissed off one of the owners of the karaoke bar over a Facebook post I made. I wasn't complaining about work, but made an observation that we had some great singers last night...some, not so much. So she chewed me out on Messenger, saying that as a "public figure" I should watch what I say. That was the tipping point, and as for now, I'm off Facebook. I doubt I go back any time soon, if ever.

Probably shouldn't have written it, but I never, ever single any singer out specifically, and it was sent to just a small sub-set of people. Someone ratted on me.

107 I've seen an F-8 Bearcat fly alongside of an F4-U Corsair, right here in Galveston, TX.

At Sholes Field, the Galveston airport. Nothing commercial but oilfield helicopters based here anymore.

But, the Wings over Texas airshow used to be here, before they moved it inland to Ellington Field. (NASA's home airstrip next to the Johnson Space Center)

The Bearcat had absolute jet-like climb to about 2,000~3,000 agl, at which point it still had a bit more weight than the prop had thrust.

Keep in mind though, that was a purely vertical climb, after a low pass at about 350 mph.

The Corsair's climb, by comparison, was about a sixty degree ascent, at best.

Oh, and not mentioned here about the Bearcat.

Pure acceleration in level flight. A highly visible, visceral and thrilling thing to see, you could tell when the pilot firewalled the throttle....damn thing went from about 100 mph, level, to definitely over 300 mph, all in about 4,000 ft. worth of a 50 agl sprint over the runway centerline.

So very near-to-jet performance.

And if you get to actually climb on to the wing (like I did) and see just how small and compact that plane really is, how tight the confines of the cockpit, you'll get an idea of what Grumman was about at that stage of the game.

Frankly, I think at lower altitudes, a Bearcat would eat a Mig 15's lunch. Pity they never got a chance to prove it.

151 From the SDB link -- "English isn't really a very rich language for cursing."

It's actually not bad. I had the opportunity to work at a manufacturing facility in Silicon Valley that, due to historical reasons (the first four employees, then "I know a guy who needs a job....") was pretty much evenly divided between Hispanics, Bosnians, and Vietnamese, with a smattering of Anglos. It's quite amusing to have a Bosnian accidentally drop something on the foot of a Vietnamese, then have them swear at each other in Spanish -- but that's frequently the way it worked. From what they told me -- it's very difficult and watered-down to swear in Vietnamese, and (while you can get really snarky in your abuse) in Bosnian....it's incredibly difficult for non-native-speakers to pull it off. So everyone did monosyllable expletives in English and more extended obscenities in Spanish.

They're just so entrenched they believe they have lost the need for subtlety. Do a little research on election histories in California. It's just less well-known than Illinois, but the transition from red to blue state wasn't *just* demographic destiny.

The "conspiracy" part is keeping the "wrong sort" of people out of a committee, department, bureau, etc. Once that is done, you just let the little lefty darlings do what's natural with no one to oppose them - hell, half the time, they can convince themselves they're just doing what "common sense" tells them because everyone they work with agrees.

They define your beliefs as "out of bounds" and then it's ethical to punish you or censor you. Keep tightening the boundaries until everything that isn't forbidden is mandatory.

I *know* these people, they think you're evil because you're keeping them from achieving Heaven On Earth, so pretty much anything they do to you is justified.

So they get on school committees and community committees and editorial boards and push and push and push and push...

It is like a dystopian nightmare, when you see it happen. Seriously, not one or two or ten but millions of them. And they think they're doing God's work, literally or metaphorically.

You're quite welcome. As a jew-billy in good standing, and of the first water, I'll say that the peculiar combo of protestant self-loathing (it was like water to fish, where we lived) and Jewish humility has made me acutely aware of the value and power of the prayers of the sinful. To pray, as a sinner, for another's benefit is a mitzvot; unworthy as I am, nonetheless to rely upon, and ask for, the help of the Almighty for the sake of another is an act of absolute contrition, to drag the mackerel-snappers into it.....

All of which is to say, the prayers of the faithful and the good carry great weight, I think, but G-d must be moved when those who go astray pray to Him, as well. I like to think He is touched by their frank humility and utter faith that His mercy exceeds His righteousness.

But there's nothing like seeing one of the few airworthy examples of one, up close, in person and tearing up the airspace as if the sky owed it money.

Seeing what that airplane could do, far, far exceeds any grasp of the flight envelope from numbers alone.

Plus, the graphs on screen don't reek of avgas, oil and hydraulic fluid on a hot tarmac.

I think the pilots put on a hotter than normal flying display, when they have the whole Gulf of Mexico as a safety buffer, only 1/2 mile off the end of the over-run.

And yes, that includes the Lone Star Flight Museum's B-17 making a 25 ft. agl pass with every needle in the dial pinned to the max.

Might only been 275 mph or so....but it was a damn beautiful 275, and a sight I'll never forget.

They're just silencing conservative because of the John O'Sullivan rule--"Any organization that is not explicitly conservative becomes liberal over time"--because 1. the people running it were probably educated and have lived in environments where liberalism is dominant and 2. there's rarely a penalty for pissing off conservatives, whereas there is for liberals.

As far as what to do about it, conservatives could try to migrate, publicly, en masse somewhere else. But where?

If it's any consolation, Twitter's stock price has been plummeting for a while.

266 We returned to one of our favorite weekend activities today and did the "Chainsaw Trail" at Sanborn County Park. It's officially on the guide map as "unmaintained service road".

It's "unmaintained" because there are a ton of fallen trees across it that you have to pass over, under, or go around. As a nickname, we called it the "Obstacle Trail" or "Chainsaw Trail", and the latter name seems to have won out. It's sort of like climbing 600 feet in 3/4 mile while dodging through a jungle-gym -- in a beautiful redwood forest with sweet fresh air.

Considering that this is our "bread-and-butter" go-to trail, I'm feeling particularly ass-kicked. The almost two-month absence from this trail, combined with the additional fallen trees from winter storms, made a big difference in how I'm feeling it afterwards (though our time on the hill and pace were pretty good).

My favorite Yom Kippur story of all:
http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/3090/jewish/The-Yom-Kippur-Drunk.htm

301 "You might as well have declared that gravity doesn't work because airplanes fly. THAT is how stupid that post was." redbanzai

again you display you know nothing. Science has laws. Economics has theories that can't be precisely measured or isolated. Have you ever listened to a Greenspan testimony, and dissected it. The part we saw was definitely creepy. I had no desire to see a movie about the rape and murder of little girls though (even if it *is* off screen) and, now that I have daughters of my own, I want to even less. Kind of ruins In the Hall of the Mountain King as well, which is a shame since it was one of John's favorite songs to play.

Posted by: Illiniwek at February 22, 2016 12:36 AM (eUbDe)

Illiniwek... the laws of supply and demand are not theories and are pretty damn immutable as they are based on human nature and human incentives. I will be willing to produce more of any product if the amount of money I get for it increases. I will produce less of that same product if the amount I can charge in the market goes down. And if the government tries to screw with that mechanism by setting prices lower than the market price, products will become scarce or even disappear from the legal market and only be available on the black market.

On the flip side, for any given supply, increasing demand increases prices (and draws more producers into the market). If demand decreases, the price that a product can command will drop which will signal producers to move on to producing something else. Again, if the government interferes with that mechanism, it has predictable results just like it would with those fancy schmancy laws of science you speak of. That is true here, it is true in Cuba and China, and it will be true on Mars if we eventually settle there.

I didn't call you stupid (nor will I) but that post was about as stupid as stupid gets.

362 One of Val Lewton's most underrated movies is Curse of the Cat People because, despite the title name, its not a monster movie. Instead it is the story of a very precocious girl who does not fit in with the other children and her parents are at a loss. Irina appears to the girl as something like a fairy god-mother who listens to her problems and tries to help.

Who gave this movie such a misleading title? The studio who then had to figure out how to market it. Long before A Princess of Mars became John Carter, a studio tanked one of their own films with a bad title.

372 Taking the Budget Bus: A Tale in Three Tweets

One incident. Generalizing that is a bunch of bullshit. I've taken the bolt bus and mega bus countless times and never had anything but a nice, easy, and CHEAP ride. Never a problem. I've had more delays on amtrak (which costs an arma nd a leg) and jersey transit than you can shake a stick at.

Did you know that the way amtrak used to handle the switch from daylight savings time was to stop all their trains exactly where they were and sit on the tracks for an hour until they caught up with the printed schedule? Yep. Totally true. And people used to write articles every year as they got caught in the retardation and couldn't believe it. They would stop a train 15 minutes outside of New York and just sit for an hour. Every fucking year.

Bolt bus and mega bus are great services and the best values around. It's a shame their pick-up/drop-off spots changed in Manhattan but they are still awesome and convenient.

Heyooooo, Horde!

Just in case Brent is around is needs to know who we pissed off
today...I pissed off one of the owners of the karaoke bar over a
Facebook post I made. I wasn't complaining about work, but made an
observation that we had some great singers last night...some, not so
much. So she chewed me out on Messenger, saying that as a "public
figure" I should watch what I say. That was the tipping point, and as
for now, I'm off Facebook. I doubt I go back any time soon, if ever.

Probably shouldn't have written it, but I never, ever single any
singer out specifically, and it was sent to just a small sub-set of
people. Someone ratted on me.

391 Taking the Budget Bus: A Tale in Three Tweets

To this instant I cannot figure out how Twitter works. No matter what I do, or how many clicks I click on the chain of Twitter-clicks, I can never get to the point of "seeing the content" -- all I ever seem capable of perceiving is people tweeting about the original content, or describing it, or linking to something that purports to be it, but is instead yet more tweets about whatever it is that everyone is tweeting about.

I assume -- I can only imagine that it must be the case -- that everyone else can see what is under discussion (" the greatest 3-tweet story in the history of Twitter"), but for the life of me I don't know via what mechanism they are able to see it, nor what I am doing (and have always done) wrong.

It can be frustrating to be taunted with "this is the greatest [thing ever]!", yet it always remains tantalizingly just out of reach. I'm not on Twitter, but as far as I can tell, they've pre-emptively banned me anyway!

The earlier version has its points, Bebe Daniels makes a very hot Brigid O'Shaughnessy and Dwight Frye, who played Renfield in the original Dracula, is good as Wilmer. But Cortez is no match for Bogart. Not to mention no Lorre or Greenstreet.

404 Since someone asked, I clicked around until I found out who is doing Wizard of Id these days. It's credited to "Parker and Hart", the original creators.

I found this:

In 1987 Parker asked his son Jeff to join him in the studio to work on Wizard of Id.
Nicola Hodge (later to become Jeff's wife) came on board in 1991,
bringing her skills as an illustrator and computer graphics designer.
The two worked with Brant Parker in his studio until 1997 when he
retired from drawing the strip full time. Jeff worked with Johnny Hart
for the following ten years, until Hart's death in 2007. Jeff and his
wife continue the strip in collaboration with the Hart family.

So it's son-of-Parker, son-of-Parker's wife, and unspecified-family-of-Hart these days.

Ehhhhhhhhh, I'm too apathetic to even be confused at this stage of the game. Anything involving Twitter, I simply don't understand.

I'm hoping they go bankrupt (or become unpopular and irrelevant) soon so I can skip the whole phase of even trying to grasp what twitter is and how it works. I can then concentrate on trying to learn whatever fad/format/thingamajig that replaces it.

I did that with music. Went straight from vinyl to mp3, completely skipping over the CD phase of history. Never owned a CD, nor a CD player. I stuck with records stubbornly, convinced that CDs were doomed to be just a brief passing phase of history despite being promoted as eternal and inevitable.

When Napster came along I was overjoyed, because my "hold out" status had paid off, and I was proven right. By now, the very thought of a "CD" is bizarre and embarrassing.

413 Not too late out here on the lefty coast.....

It was too late last night on the ONT, so I'll just chime in on a last night topic.

Anna Puma was commenting on how crappy we are in Aerospace today cause we take so much time designing, building, and flying new airplanes, using the YF-16 as an example.

There are 2 reasons for this:
1) The absolute biggest reason is digital flight controls, and their software development. It is a rigorously structured process, so the design, code, test, and final integration tests take a God Awful long time, compared to the old analog flight control systems of YF-16, YF-17, F-117, as examples. Of course older than that, and you're back to pure mechanical/hydro-mechanical.

2) if you want to fly in as short a time as possible, use an off-the-shelf propulsion system. Concurrent engine and airplane projects take lots longer, more interfaces to work out and argue about.

Also, someone was griping about F-35 using fuel to cool avionics. The fuel is in closed lines, and liquids can handle more heat transfer than air can. A very good example are engine FADEC computers. They are all fuel cooled, and they are mounted right on the side of the HOT engine. Engine companies scream when airframe engineers suggest mounting FADECs in a (slightly) cooler part of the airplane. FADECs are matched to a given s/n engine, with specific tuning constants and such, so they don't want to leave the possibility of and engine and FADEC getting separated from each other.

I agree the government should be in English only. You should be free to use any language you want, including radio broadcast.

We as a society need to be more demanding that outsiders coming here strive to assimilate to the country they chose to live in.

We need to be confident in our cultural superiority. We put men on the moon. Get back to us we your country achieves lunar orbit.

Please, the only thing ugly about this is that the migrant bus was not turned away, and that police and firefighters did not side with the protesters. THAT'S what needs to happen.

What's ugly is a government waging war against its own citizens.

Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, February 22, 2016. On this day in 1819 the Adams-Onís Treaty was made in which Spain agreed to sell Florida to the United States for five million U.S. dollars ($78M today) and the settlement of the boundary between the US and New Spain (Mexico). The $5M was not to be paid to Spain but was to be used to pay American citizens' legal claims against Spain.

481 Just to clarify, while there may have been an analog fly by wire system used some time in the past, but starting with the YF-16 onward, the fly by wire systems were all digital, not analog. They can trace their history back to the early 1970s and a Vought F-8 Crusader fighter that was used to develop the original "digital fly-by-wire" (this was even painted on the side of the plane) control systems, used from the F-16 onwards, and also included the Space Shuttle.

Oh, and FADEC stands for "Full Authority Digital Engine Control", similar to the ECU modules used on the engines of modern cars. Essentially a computer that controls the engine.

489 Hey Oort Cloud,

Thanks for the response, but I was in the midst of it with the F-117. We used the F-16 flight control system, and it was analog. The digital FCS's came later, and yes, the first was the digital fly by wire F-8, at Dryden, IIRC.

Posted by: Jimmy Doolittle at February 22, 2016 07:08 PM (0v8cH)

490 Besides, consider the state of the art of digital computers back in 1974. They could not handle the response time required of a flight control system, particularly for unstable birds, where time to double could be 0.10 seconds. It took several years before we got to clock speeds of even 60 hz.

Posted by: Jimmy Doolittle at February 22, 2016 07:26 PM (0v8cH)

491 http://www.f-16.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6605

F-16 digital flight control system came in with Block 40. All the previous were analog.

Fly-by-wire does not equal digital. Although, today, analog is obsolete. Too bad, they were fun to play with.

And yes, I love commenting on dead threads. The AoS lifestyle doesn't fit a West Coast Night Owl.
