Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Thomas Friedman: Am I A Bad Person to Wish that Grover Norquist Drowns? He's vomited up a few other death-wishes in the past. He's a very dull, repetitive man. Speaking of repetitive, maybe it's time for a little repost. The last time I posted this, some people didn't known Friedman well enough to get the joke. Well, there's really three things being spoofed here: A. Friedman is insufferable and annoying and has been saying the same thing for 30 years. Part of the gag here is that no matter what happens, Friedman lapses into the same crap he always says. Friedman only has four ideas: 1. The world is interconnected; 2. There's absolutely no differences of any consequence between different cultures; Pepsi and KFC and Apple have made us all exactly the same. 3. We must tax the hell out of carbon because Intellectual. 4. We must get rid of democracy and institute a system of Chinese fascism, because the elite Mandarin class (as Friedman likes to consider himself a part of) knows best, which you can, by the way, see so clearly by how gangbusters China's economy is going at the moment. B. Friedman is widely mocked for the number of Taxi Gambit Openings in his pieces. He likes claiming that an idea he had (usually the same of three ideas he has) was sparked in a conversation with an Ethiopian cab driver in Kinshasa or wherever. Left unexplained is why he's always in a taxi, which pumps out a lot of carbon, and not making use of he local mass transit systems, which use less. C. And we'll just toss in, "Friedman thinks it's funny to wish death upon people he disagrees with." Actually, that wasn't part of the original joke; I wasn't actually wishing death on him. I was just joking that no matter what happened, Friedman was going to claim this proves his point that the world is all connected, people are the same everywhere, and we must immediately institute a Chinese style fascist autarchy (or, as he'd term it, a system of "managed democracy"). But, given that he does seem to like casting death-wishes on people he disagrees with, I guess this is something else that is in play now. Update: "The Automaton" sends this hilarious random Thomas Friedman column generator -- and, despite being computer-generated gibberish, it is exactly like a real Friedman column. A Conversation With a Cabbie and What It Tells Us About The Next Several Minutes of My Life![]() by Tom Friedman Special Guest Columnist for Ace of Spades HQ I was talking to my cabbie in Cairo, making idle chit-chat as we threaded our way through a colorful and boisterous bazaar, what the locals call a souk, when I pointed out how the world is becoming more interconnected every second. Then, he stabbed me. As the blade slipped between my ribs, it occurred to me the rubber of the knife's handle was made in Brazil, and the steel crafted in Japan. Much like the gaudy wares on display at the souk outside the red-flecked windows, my backseat butchering was a glorious melange of the intersection of ideas at the great crossroads of the world. As my cabbie continued to stab at my torso, I pondered that this moment was made possible by what I call "the pollenization of possibility." Consider: It required the melding of three cultures, Brazilian, Japanese, and Egyptian, to produce the perforation in my Minnesota-made kidney. It was as if the grand viziers of thought and the great moguls of trade had conspired for years to come together into the red-tipped point of my itinerant assassin's dagger. You can see this everywhere in the world, in "American" cars with parts made in Japan and largely assembled in Mexico, or in the latest "killer" app, conceived in Silicon Valley but coded in Seoul. The pace of cross-pollenization and adaptation is unstoppable and ever-increasing, much like the crazed murder-tempo of my assailant's unexpected blood-frenzy. I hold up my hands in defense, like those "left behind" in the New Economy, trying to protect themselves from the incoming sharp edge of disruptive change. Though, in my case, I was actually trying to protect myself from the incoming the sharp edge of stabbing. But, just as ideas from far-away cultures penetrate our society, the blade cuts into me like a viral meme, or perhaps a catchy Bollywood song. But one of those songs that plunges deeply into the meat of your palm and severs the nerves to your fingers. I cry out to passers-by for help, but just like those left behind by globalization, they are heedless of the changes happening all around them. Finally, I catch their attention. Then they begin stabbing me too. As the crowd gathers around me with knives and antiquated farm implements, some scratch-made, some from the nuevas factorias of Veracruz, it strikes to me that I am witnessing what I call the "sudden inevitable." In my book The Sudden Inevitable, I trace how events that overtake us have percolated in the collective unconscious for decades, even centuries. This guy just cut off my foot with a shovel. Ideas are pregnant in the ether before any human speaks them aloud, much like the idea of stabbing me to death has long percolated (I suspect) in the collective mind of my closest confreres. And thus, as I lie wet and wriggling upon the ground, this conclave of multicultural avatars pulling off my pants and leaving me naked to the waist for God knows what reason, I think about the quickening pulse of international concourse, and how it matches my own quickening pulse, as my heartbeat becomes fast, weak, and thready due to rapid exsanguination. Something of the world has been lost, and it will not be returning any time soon. Rather like my foot, which I see now has been placed upon a table in the souk and is now being offered for sale at the price of one pound, sixty piastres. I'm rather proud that the foot of a simple man from the farms of Minnesota should command such a lofty price in this place, this chattering beehive of a bazaar where the locals come to haggle over bolts of cotton and baskets of taro, and where Westerners come to be butchered and stripped down for their organs. And their foot. I cannot speak any longer. My microrecorder (made in the Netherlands) is almost full. Oh bugger, they just took that too Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Friedman (and some others) toss out these casual insults, threats, death/rape wishes towards their ideological opponents in an attempt to make them appear as "The Other" to casual readers. Even if you don't know who Grover Norquist is (actual, better if you don't), you know that at least one columnist you read doesn't like him, so he must have something wrong with him. It gets you used to hating Norquist for no particular reason other than experts have told you to hate him.

gee i've never heard any of that! Wow, thank you for the startlingly new information! I guess everyone has their saws that need grinding. In case you didn't read -- and of course you didn't read -- Friedman is not objecting to Norquist because he's insufficiently anti-jihad, but because he's too in favor of limited government. The fact that Friedman can ask the question "would I be bad?" without guile or self reflection, is the self-revealing structural flaw in his thinking that makes him such a moral and intellectual dolt.

Speaking of odd conspiracies, or not. Personally really having a difficult time accepting Scalia's "natural causes" death. I'm really not a conspiracy type, honestly, but the court appeared to be ready to rule against the unions and thereby also the DNC on forced dues payments. Both the unions and the DNC said this would come close to bankrupting the unions and that the DNC would lose a huge contribution cash cow. Not to mention all the ground help they get from unions (digging up dead voters and all). Between this and the Heller case my spidee senses are going off. With no autopsy it's just weird. Just sayin.

Chi,
First, I'm not a fan of that breed except for one huge thing. The Jack Russells are rodent killers and I live out in the country and have a huge field mice problem getting into my house. My only complaint which is a big one about that breed is that the ones I have been around bark a lot and are aggressive for such small dogs --- but that makes sense if they're instincts are to kill large and small rodents. You should think about Tucker first. Maybe introduce Tucker and to the terrier and see how that goes. Don't go with your heart first bc you have too big a one. Tucker comes first. Plus, do you still have the hobo sleeping on the couch??? It's a lot of change for Tucker. Tucker isn't a puppy like mine so maybe he can adapt. And it sounds like you have trained Tucker perfectly. Just don't go with your heartstrings first. I don't want you to get overwhelmed. Tucker could be a great babysitter for the terrier but let Tucker decide that for you so you don't have to. I would introduce the two of them and make a judgement based on that. Posted by: L, Elle at February 17, 2016 03:58 PM (2x3L+) Posted by: garrett at February 17, 2016 03:58 PM (91LL3) 235

>>My only complaint which is a big one about that breed is that the ones I have been around bark a lot and are aggressive for such small dogs --- but that makes sense if they're instincts are to kill large and small rodents.
They were actually bred for fox hunting. The hunt master would ride with a Jack tucked into his jacket. When the hounds would run the fox to ground, the Jack was deployed to try and get the fox out of the hole. One of my mom's Jack took on a very large doberman that had wandered into the barn where my mom was working. He kicked the crap out of that dog which had to outweigh him by 80 pounds. Jack's are the honey badgers of dogs. They don't realize they are small and they will take on all comers. Also, I get the concern about the vet bills. That has been the biggest unwanted surprise to me even though I did a lot of research before getting my puppy about vet costs. And I go to the vet in town with the reasonable prices! I'm so used to paying $5 and $10 co-pays for my own health and prescriptions when needed that it's like WHAT!!! $98 for antibiotics!!!!!! My vet (whom I love) always apologizes before she hands me the bill. Which I pay dutifully. Just sayin. From a technical standpoint, it'd take about two weeks for a small group of decent coders to replicate the user-facing pieces of what Twitter does to a reasonable level of functionality.
There's more to a product than that, of course, and this excludes considerations of how you make it pay for itself. But Twitter, more than just about any other 'social' product out there, ain't brain surgery. Posted by: JEM at February 17, 2016 04:28 PM (o+SC1) 331

Once again, a US government official with direct knowledge has made a leak to Fox News about e-mails on Hillary's home brew server. This leak says that one of these e-mails names an Afghan national on the CIA's payroll. Fox says that this agent may have already been killed.
Fox News: "It is remains unclear how classified materials 'jumped the gap' from a classified system to her personal server." I could make a pretty good guess. Making this leak is a serious breach, which suggests that its coming from someone high up in the FBI or more likely the Oval Office who's not worried about being caught. And that someone wants Hillary dead. It also supports that when an FBI criminal referral is made to the DOJ, it'll get leaked. Meanwhile, in a Vogue article linked from Drudge, Hillary questions whether America is ready for a woman President: "you know, you get little hints that maybe they're not as comfortable with a woman being in an executive position. Especially in a big, rough and tumble setting like New York City or the United States of America." Posted by: Ignoramus at February 17, 2016 04:31 PM (r1fLd) 335

Which I use for most of my Social Decision making.. Despite how much time I've been on here lately, I actually do not have that much time to offer for social media. Well that's not exactly accurate, I have all the time in the world, just not the energy to spend on it. So dropping Twitter probably wouldn't hurt me all that much if at all. Its mostly just someplace I drop fun stuff in and respond to people with. Its kind of entertaining but really it wouldn't matter much if I never had it open again. Facebook would be tougher to drop because its my primary way of staying in touch with family scattered around the world. Literally. And I can trace quite a few sales directly to it. Posted by: JEM at February 17, 2016 04:34 PM (o+SC1) I was musing on the interconnectedness of everything in the world when the universe stopped by to remind me of its existence. My consciousness was expanded as five tons of meteoric iron slammed into the slate roofs of my mock 17th century French chateau. The force of the impact was a new lesson in physics as the shock waves moved faster than sound itself, separating plaster from framing, and my skin from my body. The overpressure exploded my eyeballs and then my brain as I considered the journey this rock had made from a primordial asteroid belt to connect with earth in the one spot where I was. As my molecular structure disintegrate into its sub-atomic parts I remembered the lessons that the masseuse at the Davos resort had taught me as she pummeled on the tensions in my now-vanished tendons... you know, you get little hints that maybe they're not as comfortable with a woman being in an executive position. Especially in a big, rough and tumble setting like New York City or the United States of America.
I'll be honest, I'm not fond of the idea of a woman being charge of the free world. Women executives have to be incredibly exceptional to be good: Margaret Thatcher comes along once every five generations. I've had several woman bosses. No thanks. When leftists are in a public forum, they wish death upon those who oppose them - mere death.
When they are behind closed doors and safe among peers, then they wish to MURDER their opponents... and, quite disturbingly, it's always in a sexual manner. I have spent a lot of time among stage actors, and lemme tell ya: the dressing room talk is all about how they want to "hate fuck" Sarah Palin, or what outrageous object they like to rape her to death with. There's probably a great deal of ill psychology penned-up in the idea of wanting to shove inanimate objects into people; something about one's own impotence and frustration - I dunno. I'm not interested in the topic, but I'm sure someone more educated than I could make hay out of it. Posted by: RKae at February 17, 2016 04:41 PM (lF8sf) 368
You know, this style makes me think Friedman read a lot of Douglas Adams when he was younger and never picked up on the fact that the style was meant to be humorous.

Friedman wishes to sound learned and wise, as if he is privy to great insights that will lead civilizations to new heights when he is just a puffed-up second rate hack columnist at a propaganda organ for a wheezing over-fed state.
