Morning Thread (2-10-2016)

Congratulations to Brandon and his team on a great day for the Decision Desk.

The exit poll was executed spectacularly, and the vote tallying site had about 5 million pageviews last night. The 8:00pm hour alone had nearly a million pageviews.

Great night all around. Especially for the real winner, Marco Rubio.

13 Good morning all. Rousted out of bed early for work.

From this date in 1944- on the Anzio beachhead.

Feb. 10, 1944 - The EZ Dog Journal
General Meyer left on hospital ship for Naples. Arthritis. Brig temporarily changed to a Group. E--- and I left for TD with VI Corps Arty. P--- in S3. Y--- in CB. Not too practical a setup. Everything underground in caves - even sleeping quarters.

Brig = brigade
TD = Temporary Duty
S3 = Operations/Training staff officer
CB = Counterbattery

With the relocation to Anzio there is apparently some scrambling going on in VI Corps with regard to allocation of responsibilities, unit/staff reconfiguration etc. EZ Dog would remain with VI Corps with primary duties in counterbattery operations.
I've anonymized names except for Generals.

30 Speaking of PuffHo, I've been re-reading Andrew Breitbart's book Righteous Indignation.

The sections covering the very earliest days of the Internet are really fascinating. The backstory on how he met people like Matt Drudge, Andy Levy, Greg Gutfeld, when they were all nobodies, the origins of HuffPo...really great, interesting and historic stuff. (His hilarious recounting of waiting for the dial-up modem to connect takes me right back!) Just makes me wish he could have lived long enough to write a whole book (or more) just on the early days of the 'nets.

31 I bet NRO shit their collective pants after last night.

BTW the biggest "news" out of the first two races (both parties)? Economic issues (big shock) are people's most important issues.

Two implications: one, advantage Trump. People know that's hi signature accomplishment in life and where he is very strong. Two: the Democrats race to see who can best penalize success and confiscate people's money will hurt them in the general. That might play well with their cultist base, but the average voter will vote for his own self interest.

Oh yeah, and Kasich ought to put down the crack pipe.

32 Basically, last night's results mean that the establishment field won't narrow much, except at the bottom with the few percent of voters. You'll still be splitting it up between Jeb, Rubes, and Katshit, which will keep the establishment vote from consolidating to threaten Cruz and Trump.

46 In case everyone missed it last night, Clinton has a new meme that she will be talking about at every opportunity.

"The Governor of Michigan poisoned children because he wanted to save some money"

As the stupid party, it's up to us to do exactly what we always do and ignore her, let her keep pounding on it unanswered and insure that the public takes it as fact before anyone responds.

This tactic worked well for us with the Bush lied to go to war line and Rove/Libby outted a covert CIA agent.

Liberals have used a network in the past to coordinate their responses, but they were basically smart enough to recognize the problem and the solution independently.

With us, well, not so much.

It will surprise me if any of our "Paid Thinkers" take up this cause, laying out the fact of the Flint water problem and how it was solely caused by inner city democrats doing what inner city democrats do.

Because racism.

Being the stupid party is like an old shoe, we wear it well.

TRUMP'S BIG FAT TUESDAY
If he adopts a "less is more" rhetorical approach, he will continue to win.

...Nor does Trump's big fat Tuesday surprise me either. Closeted Trump supporters continue to seek me out whenever I don his red "Make America Great Again" hat. On Tuesday morning, I put on the hat not for purposes of reporting but simply to keep warm on an uncomfortably nippy morning. Minding my own business at the Lexington and 77th subway stop, a distinguished-looking gentleman sought me out and said, "I like your hat," and then proceeded to complain about the low quality of American politics. "We haven't had a good president since Ronald Reagan," he said. He has no illusions about Trump -- he wishes Trump would just shut up from time to time and cut the bombastic and juvenile crap -- but he admires Trump's "politically incorrect" candor and sees some potential in him as a "decisive" president.

This is common among quiet Trump supporters whom I have met. Their support for him is measured. They know that he is not the second coming of Ronald Reagan, but their disgust for all the weenies on both the Right and Left who duck serious problems is so great that they are willing to support Trump despite his flaws.

Pretty simple, IMO: First, the Postman's Son buried the region in teevee spots. They made him sound reasonable, smart, decisive...all that stuff Heb! also claimed to be. His second-tier opponents -- Heb!, Cruzer, Rubio -- came up with some ham-fisted and easily countered Old Skool attack ads. Kasich also wasn't Heb!, whom no one wanted to vote for.

In short, Kasich was the non-Cruzer, non-Rube, non-Lrispy Kreme, and therefore a safe "protest" vote. Had nothing to do with him; he was the None-of-the-Above Candidate.

If Vermin Supreme had gotten his campaign act together, he would have finished second last night....

Hillary will win in South Carolina.

WHOOO COMEBACK KID!!!!!

South Carolina has voted for a Democrat for President TWICE in the past 56 years.

Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at February 10, 2016 07:37 AM (659DL)

78 Voting for tribe only lasts as long as it serves your self interest. That ship is sailing as people watch their personal prosperity and chances for a better economic future slide into oblivion under Obama.

Now you've got a crop of Demcrats who want to take that to an extreme or at least continue it.

Any voter with a pulse who isn't solely subsisting on the government is not going to vote for that.

That's why Democrats want to import poor people. To destroy the countries fabric and gain their votes.

It's that simple. Tribe over country.

There comes a point where you may cheer for the team but don't show up for the game. Or, in the comfort of your own home you switch jerseys.

It's a secret ballot for a reason.

I liked the part where Breitbart sat down with a rotisserie chicken and a six-pack determined to get on the internet, and by the time he got online he was surrounded by chicken bones and empty beer bottles.

But despite vigorous outreach efforts by the government to encourage
participation, most childless adult recipients in Maine refused to
participate in training or even to perform community service for
sixhours per week. When ABAWD recipients refused to participate, their
food stamp benefits ceased.

In the first three months after Maine's work policy went into effect,

176 I thought of something yesterday. I may be genius but I may be not.

Instead of a 8 year term limit, I propose a 12 year term limit BUT, only 4 years at any one time. If people really like you, they'll want you back.

But, a cycle of 8 years, 8 years, 8 years, to me is dangerous. Not only is there complacency, but people run on undoing 8 years of whatever the mess is, and then they settle on needing 8 years to fix whatever the mess is.

4 years gives people a deadline to get stuff done and to set realistic goals to the American people.

198 I think the Cruz ad for Trump is odd. For one reason, I think the eminent domain thing as far as the woman with the house is more nuanced than is being portrayed. I don't think "we wouldn't tolerate these values in our child" really works-what values-giving money to Reid, Pelosi and Clinton? or is eminent domain an example of a selfish action. I like the "trump action figure" idea and that Trump is pretending to be a Republican, but it seems like there were two ads cobbled together there.

I think term limits are not only a bad idea, they are unconstitutional.

Fix the system. Allow challengers to raise as much money as they can from whoever (US) they want. Make everything immediately transparent online.

Make it a felony for any incumbent to solicit or accept any money from anyone. Not a dime.

Match whatever the highest amount from a challenger at primary and election time from the treasury. Again, every expense immediately listed online.

Of course, we need to change the pay and bonus for the officials too, but that's another comment.

242 I think the Cruz ad for Trump is odd. For one
reason, I think the eminent domain thing as far as the woman with the
house is more nuanced than is being portrayed. I don't think "we
wouldn't tolerate these values in our child" really works-what
values-giving money to Reid, Pelosi and Clinton? or is eminent domain an
example of a selfish action. I like the "trump action figure" idea and
that Trump is pretending to be a Republican, but it seems like there
were two ads cobbled together there.

I'll bet they never thought when establishing those auspices, they would potentially be turned against them so quickly to erase their gains.

Democrats are losing governorship's and state legislatures at record pace. If Republicans capture the presidency, the right person will not only erase those gains but destroy the Democrat Party for a generation by actually improving the economy, helping people do better financially and shrinking government.

====

"Obamacare is a disaster ... Premiums are going up 20-30-40% ... You have to be hit by a steamroller to use up your deductible ... It is hugely expensive for the country ... I would rather repeal and replace it with something much better ... A patch job I don't like, that's not something I would do..."

How much clearer does he have to be? He says at every rally, "We will repeal and replace Obamacare. We will remove the artificial boundaries that keep insurance companies from competing across state lines." He also mentions Health Savings Accounts. All private sector, competitive solutions. Not Obamacare. Not single payer. He has been very, very clear about this.

Have to start somewhere in cutting the crap out of government. Besides, if the presidency can have term limits, which was never mentioned in the Constitution, then Congress should not be immune to term limits, either. Same goes for the black robed Nine. 12 years for Congress, 15 year term or mandatory retirement at 70-years-old for SCOTUS, whichever comes first.

The original term limits was death. But now people live much longer, even with serious illnesses, of which I am one. I was told by my doctor's PA that if it weren't for modern pharmacology, I'd be dead already.

Bechtel and Prairie State Generating have built a clean, coal fired power plant there: The plant is built on top of a coal mine, so, (and this is brilliant), there are 0 emissions from trans*. They have advanced coal scrubbing technology, so the stacks emit almost untraceable amounts of carbon, lead et al. I sold the plant some software, and got a little tour. The tech I was with thought they *might* have a pH problem with some of the runoff from coal storage, but quickly found they could neutralize and solidify it w/fly ash from the scrubbers.

314 The new Cruz "Eminent Domain" ad is very good. There's more in Donald's background than the Atlantic City widow. Trump Towers in NYC is on the site of the former Bonwit Teller department store. It was a lovely Art Deco skyscraper, with official landmark status. When Trump succeeded in getting permission to tear it down, the Metropolitan Museum of Art offered to buy the two large sculptures which decorated the front of the building. Trump responded by putting a wrecking ball through them.

You speak truth.

I used to be a bank examiner back in the day, and one of the banks in my portfolio was up near Tehachapi, CA. The bank was the major financier of the windmills there.

It was always funny to read the original loan documentation and compare it with the results four-five years later. At first the windmills were all going to pay for themselves with the 24/7 energy they created. Then the story morphed into having to finance a bunch MORE of them because location was key and you had to have some overperforming windmills to make up for underperforming ones in less-than-prime spots (and the underperforming ones were always the ones already built...). Finally the story became that the state and Feds were offering subsidies and guarantees on these things so risk was minimal.

I was doing that bank for like five years and I don't believe any of those windmills ever approached a break even point.

year term or mandatory retirement at 70-years-old for SCOTUS, whichever
comes first.

The original term limits was death. But now people live much
longer, even with serious illnesses, of which I am one. I was told by
my doctor's PA that if it weren't for modern pharmacology, I'd be dead
already.
.
.
.This. I am on board with some of it, because you are exactly right, the vast majority of people in the 1770s did not live to see 60 so any form of term limits were an alien concept.

I do think you are going to have an issue with SCOTUS limits though as age based mandatory retirements have been ruled unconstitutional. That would take an amendment to the Constitution which simply is not going to happen.

not only to the concept- which I don't agree with but the story of the

what actually happened. I think she was paid rather handsomely for it.
You'd have to ask a Trump supporter about it for more details. I am not

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 10, 2016 08:38 AM (w4NZ

RE the woman (Vera Coking) in Atlantic City: Trump offered her a million dollars for her house which she refused. The government commission helping Trump tried to condemn her house and pay her only $174,000. Hers wasn't the only property Trump tried to have condemned... including one business property whose new owners had just payed about $600,000 (the commission tried to pay them about $250,000 for that property). All the property owners sued and Trump and the city lost the suit but that does not change the fact that Trump tried to have the City take these people's properties.

The fact that he offered Ms. Coking $1 million first is what Trump supporters claim makes this complicated (as if his actions after became her fault because she wouldn't sell for a million). As I have pointed out to them many times, it was her house to sell or not sell.

347 Kind of interesting that on a day when a declared socialist wins a primary in this country, news out of Europe is that the credit markets are seazing up again.

The thing about socialism is that when things go south, a socialist system has very few options at its disposal, even in a highly watered down quasi-capitalist system such as ours, the options are limited because so much of what keeps the system moving is generated by government.

QE in Europe is off the table because the thing that keeps QE moving - interest 'earned' on printed money that is gained from loaning out the printed money and trickling it back into the system, is not possible in a negative interest environment.

Socialists just aren't able to do the only thing that will work - cut spending - because that prospect would inject so much more pain into an already painful environment that they cannot bring themselves to even consider it. Worse, it curtailing government benefits to virtually the whole of a country's population would be tantamout to admitting that socialism cannot work. That simply won't happen.

386 371 Facebook is pimping some PSA type thing on gun control starring none other than Joe Biden.

Someone help me understand the D/prog v. 2-Amendment deal. Historically, it was so important to the Founder's it was THE 2ND Amendment to the Constitution. Also, the language is incredibly explicit: "Make NO LAW.."
Practically, this is one issue they always lose on. They lose in the courts, and at the ballot box.

Yep, rape jihad. It's been happening in places like Sweden and Rotterham for years.

I realize it is tough to imagine if one never saw the 'before' of Atlantic City but there's no question to anyone who saw the 'after' of massive job creation and prosperity which flowed into Atlantic City and surrounding counties that 'greater good' was obviously involved.

Maybe you just had to be there. I was.

392 @286 The Marissa "clean coal" project appears to he headed for collapse.
All the little extras, and the greenie lawsuits, brought it in way over budget, and then its output was priced far above market levels -- almost as bad as solar or wind.

But the killer was that despite 80% reduction in any kind of pollution we ever associated with coal burning, they added in the magic one, CO2. You just can't burn anything without releasing that, and even with a 15% improvement over other modern coal plants, it's murdering the planet, so there.

That special definition is going to change every aspect of life as we knew it.
Since it's definitionally impossible to be a carbon-neutral life form on this planet, in the long run we've all got to go. For the children. Who also have to go.

Hard to believe at this juncture that the E.U. began as the "Coal Community."

393 I have news for those with dialup nostalgia. I still support dialup customers. They call in mainly when their idiot friends send them emails with 10 mb attachments. At least they understand the limits of their connection. The area is full of people that moved to the country and want to know why they can't get 60mbps connections.

.SCOTUS and Kelo changed that. That neighborhood in New London used to be a nice place to walk our dogs right next to Fort Trumbull. When we moved three years ago it was abandoned and completely overgrown. Plus Pfizer $hit on the City of New London and stiffed them and closed their headquarters there right before all of the tax breaks were going to expire. Sucks to be a taxpayer there now.

397 If Hillary has any chance in South Carolina, they are going to have to bring out Bill and other surrogates to play the race card hard against Sanders. (obviously the vagina card/sexist card has backfired). Can't wait to see the Bernie cultist to hear they are supporting a racist, which makes them racist too! Which should go over real well considering most of them are of the White Privilege mindset. More popcorn.

398 Re: NH Republican Primary: I don't think second third, fourth etc. means a thing if they are barely out of single digits. Nomentum from this for any of the losers.

If Cruz had gotten 20 % and second I can see some value to him. He'll have to do better in states that aren't Evangelical dominated. He needs to show this. He barely won Iowa.

It did demonstrate that Marco has lost his surge, and if anyone had known that Jeb would get 11 or 12 % in New Hampshire, they would have kept their PAC money in their pocket. There is no way for Jeb to beat expectations after having missed expectations so badly for so long.

Mass confusion on the GOPe side, which is terrific.

Finally, how about Hillary!?

Maggie Thatcher warned them, "Eventually you run out of other people's money."

The reality is now however, that they've also run out of money that practically, does not even exist. It goes beyond debt. It is fictional money, and they've run out of that. Hell, we have too, but because of reserve currency and other magical economic fictions, our system can keep it hidden.

404 74 "I do not get the Kasich thing.

At all."

Because he seems more moderate than Ted Cruz or Donald Trump. Since Kasich really should be a Democrat, but would not be accepted by the extreme left wing I assume he appeals to the group of Republicans who really are moderate Democrats , after all.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke

I get the feeling that Kasich is actually the milkman's son.

405 ...was her house to sell or not sell...

Do you really think any of the candidates (R or D) would give this anything but lip service? Do you think the (subsidized) masses would give this anything but lip service? (if she looks like a cute puppy she keeps her house if she is old and crotchety she loses it)
Trump is no worse on this issue than the rest. Trump just has a track record. Trump's issue is immigration. You dislike illegals and you believe him on this then vote for him. (don't believe him, don't vote for him) The others have been squishy. If you like the current illegals then you can show that by voting for Rubio. I don't trust Cruz on this. He is a politician and illegals aren't his signature issue. I think Goldman Sachs is pro amnesty.

Companies are amoral at best. Corrupt city governments and state and federal agencies are continually surprised by this. I think it is because most government people are not manly men and don't understand the option of fu-I-am-out-of-here.

410 The Cruz ad is weird because no one, including Cruz is saying we should get rid of eminent domain. And two, in the case involving Trump, no one went in and knocked down anyone's house. It went through the courts and Trump lost. (Seems that Jeb did have workers go in and remove citrus trees without compensation to prevent citrus canker. He also lost and the state has to compensate the owners)

And we are not electing children. Is Cruz saying that candidates aren't polite enough? Because that seems to be part of the reason Reps are ineffective. It's a lousy ad and is not going to win him any votes.

A coal fired power plant that emits "almost undetectable" amounts of carbon?

Oh, I see what you did there. You mean elemental carbon. Now I'm a slavering Gaia-hating anti-warmist, but that degree of disingenuous contempt for your audience is just plain chemistry-rape. Very problematic.
