EMT 2/5/16 The First World edition. [krakatoa]

Edgar Mitchell died yesterday.

I know. The name doesn't ring many bells.

Edgar was the 6th man to ever walk on the moon, forty-five years ago.

Forty-five years. It has been forty since the last time a human being (Harrison Schmitt) has set foot on any rock other than Earth.

Forty years in the past, the first world was the place where miracles of science coupled with indomitable spirit to do the impossible lifted the hopes and dreams of the human race.

Forty years ago, the apolitical scientific method for empirical studies of chemistry, physics & math based on actual data still trumped the politicized sciency-tific madness of psychology & climatology & math based on fabricated data.

Now we spend our resources chasing rainbows and unicorns, and man's sole mission to escape this rock Earth that will otherwise ultimately be our tombstone has been sacrificed to the gods of progressivism.

Because the First World is no longer interested in science, or the survival of the survival of its long-distant progeny.

It is only interested in its own temporal sense of worth, a value derived by how much one tribe can compel another to bow to the first tribe's god.

RIP, Edgar Mitchell. You were one of the very last of the very best of human endeavor.

23 Most people are morally and intellectually deficient. They need to be raised properly. They are not very "resilient" or robust so that they can recover from buggy teaching and a shitty upbringing. So if leftist sleazes fcuk with the educational system as they have, most people will buy into their bullshit. They won't recover and grow out of it. So the whole thing can be broght crashing down within one generation. Maybe we do need eugenics in this sense: every fertilized egg should havd its dna checked and augmented to make sure the person will have a robust moral sense, be self critical, evaluate claims on merits and not on rhetorical games.

My take: The money for progress has been and is being stolen by government to fund interlocking criminal gangs. The NASA engineers were resistant to corruption that reduced safety margins. So no more space program.

Ah yes, the Battle of Saratoga. And the hero of the Battle of Saratoga became a traitor later. Funny that. My favorite (perhaps apocryphal) story about ol' Eggs Benedict Arnold was this: While interrogating a captured American officer, Arnold (unknown to the officer) asked him what would happen should Arnold be captured by the Continental Army. The officer calmly replied they'd cut off his left leg and bury it with full military honors (wounded at the Battle of Saratoga), and hang the rest of the sonuvabitch.

Of course, this was back when Americans, event nascent ones, had balls. Now we have a traitor in Hillarity! running for the Presidency -- and she has decent odds to win.

42 Is deflation hitting the gun market?

I'm not an expert at following internet sales, but I watch a couple of places.

CDNN Sports has the Ruger American 30.06 for $300. If they offer a short-barreled .308 at that price I'll have to buy one.

Remington 597's are $150. I know everybody wants a Ruger 10-22, but I have this rifle and it's just fine. I wouldn't trade mine for a 10-22.

Well, maybe I would. They also have 10-22's in wood for $200.

I don't actually buy from internet sites. I have a pretty high-volume dealer locally who almost always beats internet prices. I'm just thinking that it's time to pay close attention to his sales.

Played a video game in 1994 called "Outpost". It was sort of a simcity type game in which the player developed an outpost on a distant world and tried to get to to survive and thrive. The manual for it talked about all the sorts of disasters that Earth faces that have to potential to wipe out mankind, SMOD, solar flares, disease, etc. It made me realise that we need to spread out if we wish to survive.
Looking at how little we have accomplised since the heyday of the space race makes me sad.
Oh well, fingers crossed for Space X and the other private enterprises reaching for the stars.

46 And MacLaren's exposition on on Psalm 43:5

No effort at tranquillising our hearts is wholly lost; and no attempt to lay hold upon God is wholly in vain. Men build a dam to keep out the sea, and the winter storms make a breach in it, but it is not washed away altogether, and next season they will not need to begin to build from quite so low down; but there will be a bit of the former left, to put the new structure upon, and so by degrees it will rise above the tide, and at last will keep it out.

LOL.
Nope, and although I thank him for his time and effort, I generally don't read them because I don't need a daily dose of bad news in the morning. I sometimes put little hopeful little snippets up on the "mourning" thread to encourage myself and others. If we look at the dark all the time that's all we see.

Psalm 43 is-as you know-a psalm of David, who despite his sin-was a man after God's own heart
Hillary and Obama aren't, although I'm sure God would like them to get themselves right with him.
When I read the Psalm I don't think of Hillary; I think of Daviid. And Hillary doesn't strike me as happy person. Would I like to have some of her wealth-well, yes but not the rest of her life, Fortunately, many of us here have spouses who love us and/or people around us who are friends-not because they want to get things out of us-but because they've known us for years and genuinely like us. And if we don't have either of those things we may have children who love us and, we don't have to Secret Service protection all the time. We e don't have to worry that a criminal indictment for using e-mail in a criminal fashion is around the corner. I think I have far more blessings than Hillary has. As for Obama, I chose not to think of him at the moment, I'm just enjoying a bright new morning and looking forward to a walk.

98 What an odd little rant. Rather ironic to be lamenting the death of SCIENCE! with an emotional appeal to some idealized past, where things happened all sciency. Unlike today, when everyone bows and scrapes in front of false gods...

Nice story. Except, not really true. You know that, right?

Science has ALWAYS been plagued by shoddy research, and the good stuff shines through anyway, not because YOU study dirt and compounds of chemicals. It happens in all disciplines, even the so-called soft sciences. Because the way to the truth is the way to the truth.

If you violate it, you get something other than the truth. And why is it being violated? Not because of peesighkollagy, and all those other BAD sciences! It's being done because the researches who chase research dollars often find themselves within an environment where solid research methods are minimized in the services of an orthodox set of beliefs.

It can happen anywhere. And does. Mainly in those same two places where it tends to: Government and Universities.

Don't worry so much about science being corrupted by psychology and climatology. Figure out who the funders are, and what their agenda is, and that will give you a much clearer idea of where we've gone wrong.

99 When my parents lived in western NC, one of their neighbors was a transplant from a town about 50 miles from where they came from in north Ahia. And he would always go on about how these Southerners just couldn't drive in the least little bit of snow and how funny that was.

So after about a year of that, there was a teeny little glazing of ice on the road, and sure enough he was the one out of the whole town to slip, slide, do a 720 degree turn and take out a bridge abutment. Coming from The Nawth doesn't give you any special dispensation when conditions get really bad. He shut up after that.

I've heard that Southerners can't drive in the snow my whole life. The last time heard that I asked them when was the last time they drove in the snow when the snow plows were not running. No answer just a dumb look. And then I told them about the time I have to drive home from work on Christmas day in Saratoga after it had snowed all night and I was the first car on the road.

SOB: Absolutely have a recommendation.

The problem with bbq almost everywhere is that they cook most their fare on Sun/Monday, then serve that same food all week, so by the end of the week, the food is shit.

When wife and I lived in Simpsonville, a gentleman named "Big Al" opened a small roadside bbq that has grown nicely over the years, now with sit down service.

He cooks his food daily, and serves until it runs out for the day. On top of being fresh, his wife has come up with the best dry rub I've ever had.

Get him to talk about his history -- Al has had an interesting life.

Here's the address: 2131 A Woodruff Rd, Greenville, SC, 29607

Here's the number : (864) 627-4227... worth calling ahead because it's been years since I've been there and I can't guarantee they are still open.

143 Jim Baen was writing back in the late 1980's about how as awesome an accomplishment as the Apollo Program was, it was a failure in that it accomplished its goal by bypassing what would have ultimately been more useful technologies (the X-20 and what would have followed from it) and by making it inevitable that once the immediate goal was accomplished and the competition was won, funding would collapse and the program would enter the equivalent of a depression. Not to mention the unfortunate lesson that having the government throw huge amounts of money at something was the right way to get things done. We need to get out to the moon--and beyond--again, but we need to do it in a way that won't be abandoned when we reach big shiny goals.
