Overnight Open Thread (30 Jan 2016)

Ruling class blues.

I'll note that an integral part of Progressive mythology is the struggle. Despite being in charge for close to a century, Progressives still think of themselves as an insurgent minority at war with their oppressive overlords. Elizabeth Warren is worth millions, yet she spends her time in the Senate ranting about the one percent. Her neighbors in the one percent cheer her on. It's false consciousness.

Pay Gap

How about Hollywood and the White House lead by example on this pay gap BS. They won't. Just like they don't do things to lower their carbon footprint and have their bodyguards carry no guns. They just want you miserable while they live as they want.

Outrun a T-Rex?

Could you outrun a hungry Tyrannosaur? I don't know. If you believe Jurassic World, a woman in heels can outrun a T-Rex.

Bass Lines

Noisy Neighbors

God I hated living in an apartment complex, especially when they went and allowed section 8 folks in as they didn't give a shit about rules and such. Man gets revenge on noisy neighbors with an Arduino System that automatically blasts loud music back at them.

Refugee Ages

6' tall "unaccompanied minor" refugee in Sweden raises questions. Didn't we see the same thing last summer with the border crossers here?

In related news, this is what happens when your government fails to protect you and you continue to ignore the problem. 200 masked men in Stockholm station target and beat migrants after migrant youth gangs wreak havoc at station.

Snow News Bloopers

Bernie Sanders

If Bernie does not understand the issue with Hillary's emails, he's not fit for office. No Bernie, the State Department emails are not 'personal'; they are 'national'.

MSM

Journalists scared to criticize Trump. If only the GOPe had learned this a long time ago. Play tough with the media and they'll "watch their words" more carefully around you. Seriously though, whether it's Trump or someone other than the "D" candidate, the MSM will not be fearful and strike often with BS reports. They are more fearful of their own masters and what will happen if they do not do their bidding.

Spaceballs: The Schwartz Awakens

Oh yes. Mel Brooks' 'Spaceballs' sequel is a go.

Cat Video

Tonight's ONT brought to you by why you should probably stop worrying about the 2016 Election because these seven things suggest the end of the World is nigh:

17 I don't know. If you believe Jurassic World, a woman in heels can outrun a T-Rex.

Meh. In Hollywood, people outrun cars, women outrun men, women can beat up most men, leading scientists and doctors are all blacks and women. If Hollywood were to be believed, the only use for white men is as straight men, criminals and idiots who, though stupid and unskilled, do nothing but thwart the great intentions and potential genius of the more powerful women and smarter urbanites.

Hollywood doesn't paint a picture of make-believe, Hollywood exists in the world of "impossible to believe".

37 "Ruling Class Blues:"
A conservative believes in government that is as small as possible. That point is non-negotiable.
So when the author keeps ranting about the conservative establishment, who the hell is he talking about?!?

Does he think there's a majority of Republicans in D.C. eager to cut the government? If that were true, the bureaucracy would be half the size it is now. And as I said, if they don't believe that, then they aren't conservatives.

This seems to be a point of continual confusion among the alt-right: the inability to identify actual conservatives, as opposed to the many posers out there.

It's almost like the alt-right doesn't know anything about conservatism...

38 AHCC is Active Hexose Correlated Compound. Japanese make it from mushrooms. Some say it has cancer fighting capabilities but no independent studies confirm this. Some lab studies indicate it may have immunostimulatory effects. I know I haven't really gotten sick since I started taking it last summer. On a trip to NYC last Nov, my wife and kids got sick and I didn't (as did many others on the bus). Could be luck, could be I washed my hands more, who knows.

If governments refuse to protect their own citizens, then the citizens will have to fend for themselves and take matters into their own hands.

At some point they'll realize that the immigrants are only a symptom, and that the real problem is the people in government. That's when things will really get sporty.

And this is done when I go out and when I come back 30 seconds later. It could be 2 am and she will do it. Anything beyond hi she sees as an opening to hit me up for something. She is being evicted at the end of this month for non payment of rent. The landlord was old and sick and was scared to evict because she is black. He died and his son took over and took her to court. Any non payment over a year old, the court would not order her to pay. So, the landlord lost thousands of dollars. And tho she has driven me crazy, I am worried about what the new tennants will be like. These apts have no insulation. She didnt blast music but she talks so loud and constantly and is always fighting on the phone. She never shuts the fuck up. So so Hwd - look at me! look at me! Hate that type of behavior.

Ok, 1 ) You're crazy, 2 ) because DBH has no plot.

Who is the protagonist?

What problem did the protagonist solve?

But Tucker is correct, why has no one else been able or willing to take on these big issues so boldly ... the Clinton's sex attacks, the criminal element of the illegals, the need to pause letting in unvetted Muslims (even Bill Maher agrees on that)?

Alleged conservatives are as herd like as the left at times. They have their own Bill Nye or Neil D' Tyson, who make them feel smart about not so conservative positions. And most of media and many blogs hate Trump and work to destroy him. The big issues are border control and trade, as those are swamping US and will change the country if not stopped (or it may be too late).

217 Also weft-cut, there's more than one way to tell a story.

True, most stories have a protagonist who's an example to *emulate.* BUT... you can also tell a great satirical/comedy (or horror) story with a protagonist who's an example to *avoid at all costs.*

"Where's Poppa?" from 1970, written/directed by Carl Reiner, is another example. His #1 problem: a mindbendingly clingy, ruinous, crazy, unthinking Jewish mother.

How does the protag, played by George Segal, *finally* solve his problem? By finally giving in, crawling into her bed, and SLEEPING WITH HER at the very, very end of the film. Not kidding, check it out. Very dark.

Without giving his any serious thought, it occured to me (hardly for the first time) that I should never have sold my first car, 1968 Mustang. Saw some kids in one just like it a few years back, stopped 'em and asked, yep, 1968.

I probably wouldn't've taken good enough care of it. But if I had one pristene, new, well...

265 Japan has ordered its military to be ready to destroy any missile fired by North Korea that threatens the country, local media reported, as concerns mount that Pyongyang is preparing a rocket launch.

Defence Minister Gen Nakatani issued the order, the Nikkei daily and Kyodo News reported, after reports of suspicious activity at Pyongyang's main satellite complex fuelled speculation a launch could come as early as next week.

A Japanese defence ministry spokeswoman declined to confirm the report when contacted by AFP, saying that "would reveal our strategy".

"But we are taking all possible measures to respond (to a missile launch) by collecting information and coordinating with countries concerned," she added.

North Korea is banned from using ballistic missile technology by UN Security Council resolutions, so any launch would further raise tensions among the international community only weeks after its latest nuclear test.

Two US defence officials confirmed to AFP on Friday there was ongoing activity at the North's Sohae satellite complex, which Pyongyang has been upgrading to handle larger, longer-range rockets since 2013.

If I might be forward -- make sure that both of you remember that he's a giant heartache because you love him so. My uncle did OK with Lithium (though he was older); there are many indications that SSRI's are too dangerous to use for patients under 25 years unless in an inpatient facility. I well understand the stress, confusion, and exhaustion that can quickly build-up in such times -- each malady reinforcing the others. I hope you can find calm, clarity, and comfort to resolutely meet the challenges ahead.

Who do you think the voters of Iowa like better today?

378 Went to the Silver Antique car auction at the Ft. McDowell casino this afternoon. Saw many nice cars, and some not-so-nice. Never got a bid card. Didn't see any that I would have absolutely had to have, were money no object. Did see quite a few that I would happily let grace my garage, were money no object.

Saw a very nice white TR6, 56000 miles, that sold for $12000. Nicer car than mine by far, but it did need a few things fixed. What it did tell me is that I could spend quite a bundle on mine, and still not be in it for more than it is worth. Saw not one, but two '63 Avantis, both nice, but nowhere near 400-point cars. Might have seen Alice Cooper, or at least a guy who looks like him.

I hate to tell you this, but there are several Rosie's quilt stores. Which one are you talking about?

And, BTW, you want big -- Mary Jo's Cloth Store in Gastonia, NC. For a little background, you have to realize that there was a lot of industrial production in the mill towns of the south -- but they weren't making iron and steel, they were making furniture and cloth. A lot of the production has moved on; but a lot of the trading posts remain.

412 Something I learnt recently (as in, yesterday) - Joy Division for "Atrocity Exhibition" had Bernard Sumner on bass, and Peter Hook on guitar.

All Hook did on it was make a lot of discordant noise. But Sumner did pretty well with the bass.

The "song" wasn't even a song, so much as Ian Curtis doing beat poetry....

At different times, I owned both. 1966 and 1978. I found the cockpit design and convertible top preferable on the latter. The former was not notably faster or more maneuverable, in my experience. But 1978 was the last "good" year for the design, as 1979 and 1980 had serious QC issues, coming from labor disputes, I believe.

Realized as you asked about the MGB that I left one car off my list. Sunbeam Tiger, not particular about the year. Or Alpine, 1964-1967. I owned an Alpine and enjoyed it greatly, and the Tiger was a car that I worshiped from afar.

Worse, I cant remember the name of one of my favorites. Loved looking at all the shit. Not having an art background, often the supplies were mysteries to me. My favorite store had a lot of paper, paint, books, and other stuff and on the other side of the store, drafting instruments and technical tools. I calligrapy, you do a lot of lining of paper. At first it is tedious but then it is relaxing. Having the right tools helps. Going to see if I can find the name of the store on an old credit card statement. Maybe they just moved.

I listened to about 30 seconds of their cover of Walking on
Sunshine. It was OK. Video showed singer singing, musicians music-ing. I
fail to see what's revolutionary about that. I was watching Youtubes of
Little Feat last night. Singer singing, musicians music-ing. And the
music was better, IMHO.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 31, 2016 01:02 AM (Z8fuk)

That's one of three.

The thing about recording sound+video, and mixing them both down simultaneously, is somewhat innovative. Multitracking Nataly doing background vocals and recording the video of each track is clever -- it's not the be-all and end-all of musicianship, but it's a nice fillip.

Try another two vids.

I disagree that Grunge was bad or killed other non-marginal bands. There was a lot of musical diversity at that time and it was great. You had NIN or Ministry. You hade Depeche Mode or The Cure (for example). Slayer and Sepultura exploded as did Metallica and Megadeth.
They did destroy those faggy hairbands, which to this day make me want to put a bullet thru whatever device sh*ts out their music.
The early 90's had much to offer musically.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 31, 2016 01:25 AM (Z8fuk)

535 Well, since the press has been reporting that all the "immigrants" are children, despite most of them being military-aged men, I have to give them credit for being consistently propagandistic.

Every sentient being in the world knows they are lying about every aspect of the "immigrant" "crisis", so when they report that "children" were beaten, I'm sure most Swedes know exactly who got pounded and have no problem with it.

Agreed. It's a matter of taste. Not saying they are bad people; they seem nice. Glad to hear they got a band together and went on tour. I hope they do well. I think working that mode is a lot more likely to win them fans than making precious little videos that annoy old farts like me.

Well, since the press has been reporting that all the "immigrants" are
children, despite most of them being military-aged men, I have to give
them credit for being consistently propagandistic.

Every sentient being in the world knows they are lying about every
aspect of the "immigrant" "crisis", so when they report that "children"
were beaten, I'm sure most Swedes know exactly who got pounded and have
no problem with it.

Posted by: Sharkman at January 31, 2016 01:25 AM (V5YnQ)

It's all lies, all the way down -- they're not refugees, they're invaders; they're not women + children, they're fighting-age males; they're not from war zones, they're from barbaric lands; they aren't seeking relief; they're seeking conquest; they're not without papers, they discarded them along the way; they don't seek to join a productive society, they wish to rule it; they're not the best and brightest from Syria, they're the insane, infirm, incarcerated, and oppressed from every 3rd-world shithole with transit to Europe.

When 95%+ of the rapes in Sweden belong to these thugs; when people admitted as "14-year-old children" wouldn't be carded to buy liquor in the US; when aidworkers are knifed to bleed out in shelters....it should be noticed.

And the lies should all be reversed. As I noticed in a previous thread -- every "immigrant" should have a chance to be dropped off on a random streetcorner in Aleppo. If he'd rather be flown to Karachi, Baghdad, or Cairo, he needs to testify against the lies. Otherwise, he gets four hours of instruction with 100 practice rounds on a 1911 and 300 rounds in boxes before being dropped-off.

There's not enough penicillin in the world if you "get" Justin Bieber.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 31, 2016 02:48 AM (Z8fuk)

688 Regarding that "Noisy Neighbors" video about the guy who set up a microphone to detect the neighbor's loud music, which would then trigger his own counter-loud music being automatically played back at them:

I myself set up something similar a while back to shut up the neighbor's dog -- and it worked!

My device was simultaneously less sophisticated than his while also being partly more sophisticated.

First thing I did was research the loudest "anti-bark ultrasonic beeper" device available on the market. These devices emit an extremely loud and extremely annoying noise -- that only dogs can hear! (Because it is too high for the human ear to detect, thus "ultrasonic.")

They make these with noise detectors to set them beeping, but they're only ever designed for "in-home use" and can't detect a dog that's barking too far away.

Furthermore, they sometimes respond to extraneous noises, which ruins the effect because they exist to train the dog not to bark. If the ultrasonic beep goes off randomly, the dog won't be trained, because the annoying sound won't be caused by its barking.

So what I did was sneaky and clever:

I rigged it so that the beeper was activated by a remote control -- this was actually the hardest part, but I ended up buying a second dog-beeper that had a remote control function, yet had a quieter useless beep, but then took it apart and connected the remote-control part to the louder beeper of the first device. They were both all open with their guts out, but that didn't matter because...

I housed the combo remote-contolled loud beeper inside a birdhouse and hung it up in a tree near the neighbor's fence, with the "hole" of the birdhouse (behind which was the speaker of the beeper) pointed straight at the dog's usual barking spot.

So now I had a nice loud beeper pointed at the dog, which I could control remotely. But in so doing I had disabled the autodetect activation feature.

But that's not a problem, because I, me, became the detector.

I put the remote control next to the window facing toward the birdhouse, and every time I heard the neighbor's dog bark, I pressed the remote control button, which activated the ultrasonic beep. I couldn't hear it, but you could see the dog flinch!

At first he only barked louder at it, but I just kept beeping him more, until eventually after several days the dog felt defeated (not to mention deafened), and retreated inside.

All of this was inaudible to the human ear, and completely invisible, so the dog's owners never had the slightest clue what was happening.

The dog stopped barking completely for a while, but eventually it did start up again -- but only either inside the house (where it was muffled and not so bad) or on the front side of the neighbor's house away from my window (also not nearly as bad). But not since then has the dog had the nerve to come out back and bark in my direction!

So -- success! I didn't silence the dog completely, but enough to be satisfactory.

Going to be in the mid-50s here in WNY today. Woot!

Listening to Bowie's album 1. OUTSIDE. What a fantastic album. Totally off my radar until lately. Shame that it often takes death to spark an interest in an artist's back catalogue.

1. OUTSIDE is a sprawling, challenging yet mostly quite accessible work. Brilliant stuff. One of his most Prog-Rock albums ever. Love this one a lot.

729 The terrorist who injured three people in a shooting attack between Bet El and Ramallah in Samaria has been identified as a Palestinian Authority police officer.

Amjad Abu-Omar, 34, also served in the past as a personal bodyguard for the PA's Attorney General. He was a resident of Kfar Jama'in, near Shechem in Samaria, several miles north of the site of his attack.

It has also been revealed that Abu-Omar posted several messages inciting terrorism on his Facebook page, including a post not long before this morning's attack in which he appeared to hint at his murderous intentions.
