Weather Underground has changed their forecast about six times in the last two days. The NOAA site has changed once.
While it is possible that the NOAA folks have arrived at the same results with every analysis, my money is on the folks who update based on changing data.
But...I have food, booze, fuel, a big generator and a manual transfer switch so I don't even have to worry about powering my heating systems.

We had over 2 feet in 1996 and I'm sure we've had just as much since then. As long as the power doesn't go out or big branches come down and take out power we should be o.k, but spouse is in bed with flu or a really bad cold sp it will probably be up to FenelonSprout (Thanks for the name suggestion Boulder Toilet Hobo) and I to do most of the shoveling. We don't have a snow blower. One years kids cam by and we paid them to shovel snow, but kids are either not so enterprising or they moved someplace else.

I wouldn't really just blindly trust 'em. You gotta look at all of them and QA what it depicts. Most models have biases that will help you pick which one to lean on more. Other models are useless at certain ranges so that narrows it down more. Take the NAM for instance. It is known that it overestimates the precipitation amounts so you lop off about 1/3 from the total it depicts.

I have the sense that most of the NOAA local (regional) weather forecasters have their heads screwed on fairly straight . . . after all, they have to live next door to people who have to live with their forecasts. The NOAA folks in the local offices are pretty strongly motivated to get it right, I think, for the forecasts that they're responsible for.
Folks like Accuweather, Weather Underground and the like national-scope forecasters who try to do local forecasts don't IMHO do any better than the local NOAA forecasters with the 1-3 day forecasts.

That's the way I feel. If you can't handle 20" of snow, move to Florida.
You have a week's worth of groceries anyway. So you sit around watching TV, play on the computer, make a pot of chili, and bake brownies.
Even if the electricity goes off, in my case the hot water heater still works. So I wear a few layers, put a couple of quilts on the bed, and every so often, fill the tub with hot water and relax in it. I can recharge my devices by running my car.

1) Nighy(the lead) looks about 70. His love interest (I assume she is, Rachel Weiss) looks late 20's early 30's. Sigh.
2) Nighy is a member of british intelligence, his secretary, a muslim lady in a head scarf. This would not be that bad but for gods sakes with all of the other cultural signalling going on, it kind of annoys.
3) Nighy "pumps" (could not avoid the euphemism) a reporter for information on his neighbor (Weiss.) They make sure you know that the guy is rabidly homosexual in the first 30 sec by having him both come on to and check out the waiter. Again, not that big of a deal, but along with all of the other cultural signalling....
4) Everyone smoked. I actually saw this as a positive.
5) Nighy, in one of his first conversations with Weiss, mentions that he left his wife while she was pregnant with their daughter. For God's sake people, the protagonist is supposed to be SYMPATHETIC not a douchebag.
6) What finally made me turn it off was when Weiss was telling Nighy about her brother who was "Killed by the Israelis." He asks her what the brother was doing and she replies "He was waving a white flag, trying to keep them from knocking down a building."

I've found NOAA's web site to be pretty useful but not user friendly as a lot of interesting stuff is hidden under obscure links. For example, there are pretty good tide charts, but getting to the one you really want is non-trivial. If you find one you like, bookmark it to save yourself a lot of frustration!

A local station, WYFF, back in the late 90s or so, I can't really remember, got a new Doppler radar system, which they dubbed "Super Doppler". A neighbor of mine (he's now 90, and sort of out of his head now, doubt he even knows who I am now) dubbed that "The ditty bopper".
So after the, we generally to refer to the weather forecasting apparatus as "The Ditty Bopper". Ie, what's the Ditty Bopper say it's going to do tomorrow?
Anyway, WYFF has a new weather model they run, which they've been bragging about, which continuously takes current conditions into account as it runs.
So that's the latest Ditty Bopper technology. The Ditty Bopper currently claims the ice is over with and we'll only have a little snow and sleet for the rest of the night, and it should clear by tomorrow afternoon.

I've got a really great recipe that I adapted from one of Paula Deen's. The meat is moist and flavorful, and it makes a ton of gravy too if you're interested.
Most important thing about pot roast: use only a boneless chuck roast. Top round, bottom round and rump roasts are always dry.

I've never been able to reproduce it, but my mom would make a pot roast where she browned it on the stove then finished it off in a roasting pan in the oven. She would do potatoes and carrots with it, and the potatoes and carrots were caramelized in a way that I've never been able to get. She used chuck roast.

Hmm, I do my pot roast in a Breville crockpot on Low, I pour in port wine to a depth of half an inch, add 1 tablespoon minced garlic, top the roast with cracked black pepper and then with onions sliced as thin as I can get them, I put the onions and carrots around the roast. Walk away and forget it for six hours, the roast is fork tender, and the potatoes and carrots are caramelized, while the onions have mainly disintegrated into strings in the juice, then make gravy.

Good luck with the job. I have done lots of phone interviews. Best advise I was ever given was to stand up during the interview and to smile. Apparently standing keeps you from sounding disinterested or lazy and the smiling comes through as optimistic.

Look, I get that there are classic chile sauce recipes that don't call for beans, and they are great!
But for a bowl of something hot and meaty and thick and tasty, beans work very well.
I do like to use chuck that I cut into small cubes or chunks. Hamburger meat just doesn't have that mouth feel I like in chili.

I make my own refried beans, have for a long time. I cook the beans with a smoked trotter, and mash them afterwards.
Oh and if you insist on carrots with beans, cook pea soup using half split peas, half soaked beans and shredded carrot. Any sort of broth, ham bone or salt pork you want, and if you want to add cinnamon, well, no one really cares.

Imagine Diablo III with better graphics and not sucking balls. Now forget all that because this is a space fighting/trading game. Except the mechanics are a lot like Diablo. You can mine and trade but the goal is to buy bigger and better ships, guns, subsystems so you can kill bad guys who are standing in your way.
Like Diablo there are levels and like Diablo moving to the next level means your super bad ass ship is back to being a punk ass bitch surrounded by bigger badder pirate ships.
The pacing can be a bit slow getting started. Initially I did a lot of running away and trading things to get enough money to build a ship that could actually fight back. It turns out trading fresh human body parts to mining colonies is very profitable as long as the various space cops don't catch you doing it.
There are a lot of NPC factions and it is possible to piss all of them off at the same time. For instance if the cops catch you smuggling body parts, drugs, medical waste etc. they will in time get pissed off.

Ours are never dry. Have ask the wife for exactitudes, but IIRC brown a chuck steak, then cook it in the oven covered w/ 1 package Lipton Onion Soup mixed w/ a can of cream of mushroom soup.
Cover it w/ foil and cook at a low temp, IIRC 325 for 3-4 hrs depending on size.
Damn, now I'm hungry again.

Ok, so for context this is Depression Era Missouri.
My grandpa had a pet goat. I'm not sure how Mr. Goat was acquired, but it was his. And he loved that goat. He made a chariot and the goat would pull him around. He was an only child.
One day he came home from school and heard a sound coming from the barn. It was his goat. They had slit its neck and were bleeding it.
And yes, it was of course dinner for a good while afterwards.
Grandpa told us this story when he was about 90 years old. First time I ever saw him cry.

There ain't that many really good sitcoms worth a reboot... and of those that were great, you'd have major, major problems with recasting. I'll try to think of one that was great, but with cast member/s that aren't irreplaceable.

The CSA economy was in tatters, it was in severe inflation, it was short of everything but fighting men, and those were getting thin on the ground.
All that was left was to engage in a brilliant fighting retreat and hope that the North collapsed in exhaustion before they did.
You can say a lot about Sherman's March, most of it bad, but it did create the crisis on all levels of the CSA that could not be addressed successfully, and sped the coming of the end.

Not, much Chi. Just watching the snow fall. As for Kahlua, it's quite versatile. Makes a Great Southern (or Black) Irish Coffee. I used to drink white russians, but I was in a cost cutting mode one time and started on black russians. That's been my go-to drink for over 35 years. I keep a half gallon of Absolut in the bar, along with a half gallon of Kahlua. I hate running out when I'm getting my drunk on. Speaking of which, I need a refill.

We've always used chuck roast, but recently saw a nice shoulder roast on sale, that can work too.

My biggest challenge will be scheduling, as musician types are often working when everyone else is available.
For example, the yearly event out east falls smack in the middle of a six week music festival in June/July, and many weekends have concerts and whatnot.
But we'll see what we can do.

Imagine if someone came along and burned everything you owned. Your wife and kids thrown into the wild and the home burned to the ground. There were of course rapes as well. There are always rapes. Just like there were rapes in Germany. Those things are usually removed from the books when we talk about our own troops. Then during reconstruction the GOP under Grant and the Army under Sherman ran the show. Allowing carpet baggers to come into the south and set up shop. So while it was necessary to end the war the South has never really forgiven Sherman.

Thing is, most of the heavy snows on the Correct Coast are snowy Nor'easters, that is, they come from the south, not the west. Different snow, too, with a nor-easter snow being heavy and wet, not fluffy and dry. Tomorrow's winds are supposed to be around 50 m.p.h. That with continued snowfall makes for not only blizzard conditions, but white-out conditions (which the #BLM crowd would most definitely approve). Getting a foot of snow in 24 hours or less is bad, no matter how you shovel it.

Two different things entirely.
He was essentially waging war on the civilian population of the South, in a planned raid.
Now, seeing as how the US was FIGHTING so these civilians would still be US citizens, he was, in essence, waging war on civilians who were still US Citizens... as far as the North's Law was concerned.
Many of these people were just caught in the middle... yet got burned out anyway.

I think he over-focused on short-term results that went sideways in the long game. He over-focused on terrorizing his way towards rapid Southern surrender without having a plan to reintegrate his errant countrymen after the war -- and, as a result, said reintegration was more painful than it had to be.

IMHO the bomber campaigns in Germany and Japan did lead to an easy occupation. The people of Germany kept their moral right up until the ground troops came but I believe the final occupation was a relief for a lot of people in Western Germany after all the carnage.
I think that is why Powel didn't want to invade Iraq after the first Gulf war. We didn't have the will or the mandate to wage total war. In the second war we tried occupying after precision bombing but the will of the people hadn't been broken yet. So we wound up with a rough occupation.

I think @559 and I are basically saying the same thing. If you're blowing up infrastructure -- today would be power plants, water plants, pipelines....was railroads and cities back then -- then you should try to disable it for the duration of the war + about six months. When people are your citizens, again, you're going to need stuff. Sherman's wanton destruction disabled stuff that, in some cases, didn't get rebuilt for 50+ years -- which left the South as second-class citizens deprived of economic opportunities and smooth reintegration into the Union.
And, I should be clear, I'm not referring to that bullshit "proportionate response" nonsense the UN likes to barf up. Sherman was absolutely correct to disable the railroads 100% in a way the South could not fix.....but he should have been thinking of the period after the war and limited the main part of his damages to things that the North COULD fix in short order once hostilities ceased.

Interestingly, at one point in the early occupation of Germany, the US had to borrow the British forces' hangman (executioner) to carry out capital punishment sentences, the demand was so great (mostly rape cases). Yet - US/western Allied forces' behavior in occupied Germany - and in the final combat there - can only be considered exemplary as far as attempting to minimize harm to non-combatants.
I didn't even bother to see it, but I confidently assume that the move "Monument Men" managed to completely miss the real point of that historical chapter. That the US, engaged in the first and greatest "total war" of the mature industrial age, against (in Europe) an opponent as amoral and ruthless as modern history contains, went to considerable effort to protect the rich cultural legacy of the countries it was liberating.
An astonishing moral achievement that is simply lost on most, as they are unthinking and completely historically illiterate.
Putting Kyoto off-limits to bombing was a similar thing in the Pacific theater. Of course the juxtaposition of leaving Kyoto untouched, and "saving" a small list of cities for maximum shock and impact from an atomic bombing, that perfectly illustrates the unique US mixture of intelligent ruthlessness and civilized restraint in WWII.

They experimented with making shrunken heads out of Japanese enemy, for instance. Well, I don't think he ever said he did it himself, just was with some who were doing it. He said he smelled something "cooking" that smelled good, then puked his guts out when he found out what was cooking in the pot.
He said he wished that was the most horrible thing he ever saw. But it wasn't.

Hitler's response to the last Social Democrat leader is interesting. And while you expect the Nazi members to raucously support their leader, if you know the German political scene of the time, Hitler's responses about the SocDems' performance on precisely the issues of Allied punitive measures and humiliation clearly reflect what were widespread sentiments.

Though interestingly here too Hasting asserts it wasn't usually front line troops that raped Germany. It was often as not the following hordes. In WWII most armies fought on the cutting edge with well trained troops -- like the US 101st and 82nd airborne and 1st Infantry -- and then filled in the gaps with other divisions.
In the West the German's weren't as vicious to civilians directly.

Funny, I put down a book last year for precisely this reason. The "last straw" was the author's idiotic comparison of western Allied and Soviet treatment of non-combatants in their respective areas of operations. It is one of the two books considered to be the best about the chaos and mayhem of Europe in the years immediately following the war. I figure the author had revealed his intellectual limits and that all of his synthesis and selection was now suspect.
Interesting variations in the experience with the Soviets. Rape and pillage were in fact fairly systematic, but individual officers and units would vary greatly in their behavior. This is documented in the first-hand accounts of Germans (and Hungarians, and others) who were in the path of the Soviet onslaught.

I disagree. The Wehrmacht, possibly. The SS, definitely not. Read up on the SS atrocities as their troops were heading towards Normandy. The Germans were fighting against the French Resistance, who used hit and run tactics. The SS mindset was to kill 100 Frenchmen for every German soldier killed. Short term it works, as long as one is winning. In the long term, not so much, especially as the fortunes of war changed.

The Russians have always been a fun crowd. First, it's an empire, and military success in the provinces has always been a ticket to the national big-time. Second, since it's center-of-gravity is in central asia, it's always been poorer than states with ports and sea-based trade. Third, it has always been paranoid, having been set-up by the Mongol Horde as an afterthought on their way to Europe -- political positioning has always been elevated above virtue. And, of course, fourth -- much of it is fucking cold for long periods, leaving people to sit around fires and scheme for months while eating leather and cardboard.

You will note that my observations have been mainly oriented towards his effects on infrastructure. When he was bloody towards the end of ending the war quickly, things were unpleasant -- but you can't say he was entirely right or wrong from either side. But when he crippled the infrastructure of the South for multiple generations when he needed to merely disrupt it until the war was won.....

It should be noted that the Zaporozhian Host celebrated in the 1891 painting of events in 1676, had already been betrayed and liquidated by Catherine the Great in 1775. Like I said, this is an AWESOME painting when it comes to understanding Russia.

I remember the refuseniks from the 70s - Jews who wanted to emigrate out of the Soviet Union. They were allowed to apply for exit visas, but applying for an exit visa was proof of counter-revolutionary intentions, or some other crime ... so off to the gulags they went. We used to wear bracelets with the name of a refusenik on it. Nowadays, I doubt more than a handful of people even remember this stuff - and that was just in the 70s.

The Germans intended to annihilate the Jews, Gypsies, Gays, Catholics, and Communists and several other groups of undesirables. They succeeded in varying amounts in these endeavors as well, based on things other than their raw hatred ... such as the Catholic church was fairly wealthy, and Jews were hated by many Europeans, not just Germans.

I remember reading of German advances being stopped dead in their tracks because the German troops were looting the Allied trenches of food. Many thousands of German civilians died in the war due to starvation. Britain faced the same starvation problem with the German U-boats, but the Allied convoy system helped to alleviate that threat.
The deaths from starvation in WWI was one of the reasons Hitler invaded the East, specifically the Ukraine, which is called the Breadbasket of Europe for a reason.

I have been hunting for this book that basically agrees with what Cthulu said. Times were hard in Germany and yes the troops ran out of food but the latter was due to them outstripping their own supply lines more then anything.
In that book he's counting headstones and old records and coming to the conclusion that the German's were still killing more Allies then vs. versa even on the attack prior to the American entrance into the war in force.

If you've ever read 'All Quiet on the Western Front', there is a scene where the German troops are being fed after a battle with severe losses. The food came to them based upon their original numbers. Due to their losses, the surviving German troops had a feast. Besides the US troops being fresh, starvation on the home front definitely played a part in Germany's surrender. It's not called total war for nothing.

WWII, and rations on the Russian front, for both sides, were worse than spartan....you can see it in the pictures of the soldiers of both sides - sunken cheeks, ribs showing, arms and legs painfully thin....

I've never had "chili" -- I've had "chile colorado".
As a side note, my paternal grandfather worked with a band of sheepherders on the western slope of Colorado....as a trail cook. My dad retired as the #3 Civil Engineer for the City of Los Angeles, so there was a bit of a disconnect.
