So I missed the debate. Best clips I heard so far were from Fiorina, Huckabee and Santorum.

Did Cruz manage to shake off the smears? What a fucking travesty that is, considering the state of the nation.

If the standings stay as is all the way through the primaries, Trump would do wise to pick Cruz as veep and Cruz would do wise to accept it.

No not really slamming the door on it. His "group tested" NYC comment did not play well on the national stage and he was left destroyed on it which is a shame being he is the best debater up there.
Damn shame we aren't electing the best debater for POTUS.

That being said Cruz did pretty good as far as debates go and the guy who is the only one on the R side that can win the presidency continued to lay it all out there in such a way that you do not have to guess what he is saying.

I was very pleasantly surprised by CBS streaming online's post-debate recap. I don't know if the regular network newscast was as good, but the online one was as fair and balanced as could be. And I know that the host, Contessa Brewe,r is a Leftie. I kept waiting for the bias , distortion and lies but they never came. Moar please! (but I doubt it.)

Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at January 15, 2016 07:10 AM (HMt16)

38 Well, Sefton, Cruz was called out because he made a slighting comment about Trump having "New York values," which, as Cruz pointed out, are not conservative ones. Trump defended his hometown, talked about 9/11, etc. Most commenters on Fox thought Cruz really stepped in it. I personally rather doubt that it upset anybody but New Yorkers and Cruz isn't going to win NY anyway. Heck, I've always enjoyed my trips in NY, but I understood what Cruz was saying.

Both Cruz and Trump attacked the NY Times. That certainly won't cost them any votes.

My sister texted me that she is ready to vote for Cruz - Or Rubio. ugh.

Well of course. But more than likely the NY Slimes Cruz smear was fed to them by the GOP-e and as we know the objective is to wipe out Trump and Cruz. And sadly, Trump wants to win - and I certainly would like him to win if Cruz falters - but doesn't care how he does it which is really sad. He has an opportunity in his candidacy not only to win personally but to advance the conservative cause and expose the Leftists and the GOP-e allies. I wish to hell he would realize it.

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

Yesterday I came across a video by the singer Katie Melua, a Georgian-English singer who, according to wiki, is one of the biggest-selling artists in Europe. The song, "Mary Pickford," is from her 2007 album Pictures, and starts out with a quirky (but true) fact concerning the silent screen star:

Mary Pickford
Used to eat roses,
Thought that they'd make her beautiful, and they did -
One supposes.

Here it is. I like it. I hope you do, too:

From what I've seen -- admittedly, I do not hang on every word uttered by Teh Candidates -- Trump really doesn't attack Cruzer as much as he just sticks a pin into his butt from time to time. Witness the "birther" issue, about which the strongest "attack" I've seen from Teh Donald was "he needs to clear that up."

But that's enough to get the Cruzers and Trump-haters into a rage.

And it's more effective for the general public than trying to get into time-consuming "substantive" stuff like Cruzer's love for H1Bs....

His response to Nikki Haley, right there in the audience, was totally not what I expected. It was better. Completely disarming, and dare I say it, Presidential.

The other thing that bugs me is Cruz stepping in it with the NY values stuff.

If Trump wins NY (first R since Reagan) it's game, set, match as far as defeating Hillary. We have to at least try to win NY. Cruz's attack line is not helpful. Donald's response was.

See Scott Adams (Dilbert). He claims everyone goes in with preexisting beliefs that can't be changed by reason. Further he says when a candidate is effective at changing/challenging those beliefs we say the candidate is funny but we don't know why. I think Cruz and Trump are accidentally or deliberately working together in increasing the number of their supporters. The NY values curflunkel helped Cruz in the primaries and Trump in the general and open primaries.

I will tell you why I am all in for Trump.

1. He talks to you and not at you.

2. He is more capable than any man on that stage of putting together a team to run the country and run it efficiently. He is not beholden to special interests, won't have to assign positions based on donations as opposed to qualifications.

3. He genuinely is concerned for the country, not his career. He is down grading so to speak because he is to the point where he cannot stand on the sidelines anymore.

4. Everything he does, he does from a position of strength. It does not make him a neandethal that some would try to have you believe. He is forged in strength with smarts. Massive plus.

5.He will not just sit in the Whitehouse while setting out a list of demands on Congress and then go on a golf tour while nothing gets done. I believe he will be a much more hands on POTUS.

5. He is the "only" person up there who would hold a ceremony to wipe away every EQ that the previous POTUS put into effect. The others talk as if they would and won't.

JJ, I could seriously go on for a long time on this but I'll end it by saying this. People can destroy me if they like for saying it.

I like Ter Cruz, I really do. He does not stand a chance in winning the presidency. Trump pulls people from everywhere. He is everything that everyone said we needed to be able to do that one, most important thing.

There it is my friend. Take care.

And the tiniest confrontation is blown out of proportion by the MFM/Dem?Gop-e complex and pushes the real powerful issues to the background.

It's just how I feel, dude. Anyway, now come the primaries and we'll see how things shake out. My gut tells me Trump will go all the way. Maybe Cruz might get close or even tie him. But it's Trump's nomination to lose right now. And I WILL support him if he gets the nod.

This ain't Facebook, bro, and I'm not gonna Unfriend you because we disagree on what is really a smallish sort of issue. If it came down to Cruzer v. Shrillery, I'd vote for the Texo-Canuckian Coo-ban without hesitation.

Unless, that is, I let my pony-loving side show through and cast my ballot for Vermin Supreme instead....

My gut tells me it will be The Donald, too. And, veepee choice or no (and I doubt it'll be offered to him), Cruzer may well be worth a look in eight years if he gets his mind right.

79 Good morning.

From this date in 1944- on the Italian peninsula

Jan 15, 1944 - the EZ Dog Journal
Attack pushed off. No contact. Trocchio taken without resistance. Patrols pushed on to Rapido river. French and English also moving along. Weather cool and clear.

Allied advance had the American II Corps (including the 36th "Texas" Division) in the center, French Expeditionary Corps on the right and the British on the left flank. The Anzio invasion and the crossing of the Rapido were supposed to be somewhat coordinated in timing in order to split the Germans' attention and resources. Both events are upcoming in the next few days; we'll see how well that plan worked out.

Excellent summary ... all that. Cruz just seems too practiced and poll tested, yet he still completely screwed up the NY attack thing, thinking that works for Iowa I guess. And Cruz is heavy on the evangelical stuff, also I think figuring he has to win Iowa, then hope hope hope he can improve from there.

Trump has CEO experience and has been head to head with "top men" while negotiating big projects. Cruz is good, but has argued in court and made enemies in the GOPe which is fine sorta, I guess, except it doesn't show CEO ability.

For all the attacks on Trump as a clown, he really has the most gravitas. Mark Steyn approved of what he comfortably brings to the stage with ease.

Not so sure the back and forth between Trump and Cruz is accurately described as infighting. More like dealing with an issue - in the case of Cruz birth. As to Cruz mentioning NY values it was a response to Trump saying he didn't know of many evangelicals coming out of Cuba. Cruz is simply saying what a lot of us think - We're not really sure what we'd get with Trump as president.

I'm okay with either as President. Maybe a tad more for Cruz, but a Trump/Cruz ticket would be awesome.

The entire war in Vietnam makes sense only if you decide that McNamara was a psychopath who just wanted to see how many people he could get away with killing. Once you do that everything falls into line - body counts - surrendering land already taken from the enemy - all of the insanity of that war - snaps into focus and the picture becomes very clear.

Three places nobody ever checks for psychopaths are judges, prosecutors, and high government office; those are three places that ought to be screened and tested to make sure that kind of person is never allowed into those positions.

Trump also did a lot to win over some of the FOX Trump bashers, I think largely with his more solemn approach to the 9/11 subject ... they saw a presidential side. Master debater Cruz totally fumbled that and teed it up for Trump. Trump won a lot of NYC/DC media and power players I think, while Hillary is still a lying carpetbagger that I'm thinking many would rather not deal with. It Trump got Giuliani on his team, they could win back NY, and maybe even some union states like MI, PA?

And although I could trust Sanders, I know he'd make a complete cockup of the country because socialist communists just don't have a realistic view of the world. Hydrocortizone creme can help with the itch. As can some other of the numbing cremes. Believe it or not, aspercreme might help.

Another trick if you're really going nuts is not use a hair dryer on the areas that itch. You can get relief by heating the area up and it will act like as if you're scratching it but you're not. Just don't get masochistic and hold the heat on too long. You'll find that the pain from the head overloads the nerves and dulls the itch. But only for a while.

Believe it or not, it works. If the area is weeping, it will help dry it up. Like I said though don't burn the already insulted tissue. Hot water will work also but it's easier to get burned trying to get the temperature right.

Have fun.

An unimaginable nightmare that Obama is importing to a city near you right this minute.

238 Here's the thing that worries me about Trump: last week I was at a social gathering with people I know to be mainly middle of the road, squishy moderates. One person started ranting about the "bigot" Trump and his racist followers. I said, truthfully, that while I prefer Cruz, People need to think about why Trump fans like him and it's far too simplistic to simply label them racists. They have legitimate concerns Trump is addressing.

Jeez, the shitstorm that rained down on my head for saying that. I was screamed at. These people hate Trump with a vengeance and will not be won over.

So my question is: who is more representive of Americans right now, the Trump fans or the rabid Trump haters? Because as much as I hate the idea, all 15 or so people in that room will vote for Bern or Hill or will stay at home rather than vote for Trump.

It occurred to me that Trump hatred, like Palin hatred, has a strong class element, in that all of these people are just a generation removed from the shop floor and the assembly line and yet they seem to really loathe the white blue collar types who like Trump. I think for those status conscious types hating Trump is a way to signify that they are now white collar professionals who are "too educated" to vote for him. That's not my take, it's theirs. And I was lambasted for even putting in a sympathetic word for Trump fans.

264 It won't be picked up by the media because it's too subtle, and a lot of the media is from NYC itself (meaning they don't want to pop their own myths), but the fact is very little cleanup of the Twin Towers was done by actual New Yorkers. When Trump saw those workers digging the city out, they weren't people with New York values. Or more precisely, NYC job skills.

The kind of equipment and workers you use in that kind of job come from land reclamation and mining. Do you typically have that in a highly developed urban area? No.

A south-eastern company called Phillips Jordan did it, and one of the first things they had to do was remove the bucket-brigade volunteers from the scene because of the danger the volunteers were in.

283 I thought Trump, Cruz, Rubio, Christie and even Kasich had good moments last night. But I do think Cruz will lose some momentum because of his "New York values" comment, which Trump destroyed, and because of the Natural Born Citizen issue. Trump will gain points from answering the question if he would back down on his comment about pausing Muslim immigration with a simple "No", followed by some elaboration. Rubio and Cruz both debated well, but both misled about their records and they exposed each other. Rubio also has the Natural Born Citizen problem, though it has yet to be brought up with any seriousness. It will come up if he gains any traction.

304 The U.S. Coast Guard searched for two Marine helicopters early Friday after officials said the aircraft collided near the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
Coast Guard District 14 told CBS News that its personnel arrived on scene to investigate a debris field that includes an empty life raft and fire on the water.

The CH-53 transport helicopters were from the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing from Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Each carried six people, Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Sara Mooers told The Associated Press.

She said the debris field was 2 1/2 miles off the coast, near the town of Haleiwa. It's unclear what caused the crash.

- It took them, what, 12 years to rebuild the damn thing (on a smaller scale)

Political campaigns are emotional events. If you want to give a lecture on Constitutional Theory and the Role of the Courts, rent a hall. If you want to get elected, connect to the voters on an emotional level. Trump is a master salesman, he knows about making those emotional connections, and that is one reason why he is doing so well.

Yes; I see that appeal but buying the Presidency either through one's own money or from special interests just doesn't appeal to me. I don't know how it could be done otherwise, but I don't think the same amount of money is spent in other Presidential elections around the world. Any SJW pressure points on BSA National are well over the heads of where the youths are themselves and that is a plus, in my opinion. They are there for our program, not some activists' talking points.

In my more candid moments with other adults I'll say Scouting has never been about who is sticking what into whom. The chartering organization -- in our case, an Orthodox church -- calls the shots regarding membership standards under whatever BSA National last agreed to. I have more difficulties crop up from disputing parents than I do from the youths. None of the disputes are SJW related.

NBC = born on US soil (including territories, military bases, embassies) to two parents who are both citizens (either naturalized or NBC) at the time of birth.

Trump's mother was a naturalized citizen at the time Trump was born, and his father was a NBC, so he qualifies as NBC. So does McCain, because he was born in the Canal Zone, which was US territory at the time, to two parents who were citizens.

Obama's father was not a US citizen, so he is ineligible regardless of where he was born. Cruz's father was not a US citizen, and Cruz was born in Canada, so two strikes, and clearly not a NBC. I don't think either of Rubio's parents were US citizens - he's an anchor baby, according to Ann Coulter, not a NBC.

I still laugh when I think of that little stunt the douche bag Penn pulled after Katrina. After screaming to all who would listen about how "Bush is letting people drown", he decrees that he, Sean Penn, movie star is going to go out into the flooded New Orleans areas to save the people Bush won't.

So he buys a 15' jonboat with a Mercury outboard, loads up with two shotgun toting and body armor wearing security goons, no doubt to protect him (Penn) from the people he's going out to rescue, and they put out into a flooded area in the boat...which immediately begins to sink.

It was hilarious watching these clowns scrambling to get their sinking boat turned around and back to shore before it became a submarine. (They had made Novice Boater Mistake #1, forgot to put the drain plug in.) AFAIK, Penn never made another attempt at "rescuing" anyone in NO.

371 A large part of the apparent antipathy to Trump is because of cognitive dissonance.

They're actually attracted to and agree in large part with Trump but they've invested so long in a system of PC and SJW and Victimization that they are able to play so well and for this guy to come along and blow the whole thing up while having a lot of fun doing so is just too much for their wee minds.

They'll probably come around once they can see how many others who are so unlike themselves and Trump are also attracted to Trump and see that he is the only answer to the problems we have.

I don't believe Cruz can provide the charisma, planning and negotiation that will be required to set the country on a positive path. He's smart but he doesn't have a certain something which is why he lags in the polls.

I don't think it's something he can learn or acquire in the short time we have.

He's apparently unable to divest himself of a speech mannerism which he has to know irritates a lot of people and makes him look sneaky and insincere. (real people don't talk like that). Yet he continues to do it.

I think he's the kind of guy that appears to have all the right stuff but just can't get it all together to use properly that we see now and then. (or actually experience it)

He would be a huge asset to a Trump Admin. Or keep him in the Senate to help there.

The House will probably be more amenable but the Senate are a bunch of fuddy duddy's who think they run the country and they will throw up road blocks left and right. Trump can find ways around them but it would be better for them to be cajoled by someone within the "Club".

404 Cruz should have thought through how to finesse that "New York values" thing. Because he's right, and yet it came off poorly, and opened the door for a Trump counter-punch.

New Yorkers, and I am not one, but they seem to have a political group-think that is extremely liberal. They just voted in a Communist for Mayor! C'mon, that should be an easy arguement to articulate.

Yet, the way Cruz said it, the statement came off as an attack on each individual New Yorker, all of whom will feel personally offended.

Coming from the most articulate of a mostly articulate bunch, it was poor form, and makes me think that he knew he was taking a risk attacking Trump from that angle.

Just before the arrival of Ghey Gates, this was the ultimate moral issue of the Boy Scouts. Old-timers never wanted geo-caching to take the place of map-and-compass. I don't support Trump, but I get it. His base really isn't a doctrinaire conservative base; it's blue-collar workers who have been alternately ignored and beaten up by both the Republican Party *and* the Conservative Movement. That Free Trade/Tax Cuts stuff conservatives have been pushing at the same time manufacturing jobs have been relocating to China and Mexico plays well in white collar conservative circles, not so much with working folk.

Also, you can't discount how very betrayed conservatives have been by the Republican Party. Get on the Google Machine and look at the campaign promises made by the GOP in 2010 and 2014: Repeal Obamacare, stop Executive Amnesty, restrain the EPA, cap spending. None of that happened. However, the GOP did fight for Megabanks in the 2014 budget deal (they get to gamble on derivatives with taxpayer money now) and Big Oil companies in 2015.

Not that exporting American oil is a bad idea; but why is it the big money donors get their wishlist, but what the working class wants is "not politically feasible under this president?"

Some guy describing the process on the news said the people involved in those processes have no real interest in this and it'll be dismissed at the first level, but that technically law says they have to go though the motions and the chances it even makes it past that first 3 person committee is close to zero.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton

The conservative cause can best be advanced from the Whitehouse. I'm glad Trump's willing to do anything to win. I prefer Cruz, but without Trump's willingness to 'go there' on topics--illegal immigration and Clintons' war on women it would probably already be Jeb! and then Hillary! wins with a disarmed Jeb opposition like Romney and McCain and no issue like illegal immigration to bring out the base.

That being said, Trump in the Whitehouse is an unknown quantity as to conservatist results, but with Rubio Jeb or Christie as President, you know it will be more of the same, and the country can't stand that.

That's why I like Cruz and want Trump to keep firing.

421 328 This won't go over well with Trump supporters but I think it's kind of a shame that Trump can basically blow away competition in the primaries simply by elaborate stunts with money.

I didn't see anyone object yesterday when the idea was floated here before he even did it.

Also the comment doesn't make much sense to me, showing 13hours to more people doesn't hurt Cruz, it doesn't hurt Rubio, jeb or really any republican. It might marginally help him (some goodwill) but I think it's more designed to hurt Hillary in IA. The more people have an idea wtf really happened in Libya the better for ANY republican. Because her losing IA, and then NH, sets Bern up get infusions of cash and media attention to actually keep fighting her, and yes she'll likely win many of the contests on march 1, but they might actually be contested, this keeps her on defense longer, makes he have to do events, interact with the press, anwser questions, you know....all the things she sucks at doing, all opportunities for her to step in sh1t. All of that helps who ever the nominee is, so long as that nominee is willing to actually bring up Benghazi.

422 420 The brits haven't met yet for the debate over Trump.
---
There is no debate over it till the above crap happens...and there will not be a debate about it on the floor... at least not for what's been said by Trump to date. Who knows what will be said in the future that those pansies will deem hate speech though.
