Congratulations to 2015 college football national champs Alabama. And to Clemson, too. That was one hell of a game.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, January 12, 2016. On this day in 1926 the original Sam 'n' Henry aired on Chicago radio and was later renamed Amos 'n' Andy in 1928. I used to watch the TV program of the same name. The radio show was done by white actors reading the roles of Amos and Andy. When the TV program aired the roles were played by black actors. The TV show was very popular but was canceled due to pressure from the NAACP.

32 Interesting article from the CSM.

Not the opening part about Obama not endorsing a candidate at this point, which is actually the norm to not do at this point in the process.

But, the revelation that when the American people rank gun control as damn near at the bottom of their concerns, Obama is a single issue voter.

And that issue is gun control.
It's what animates and energizes him.

Really quite odd, and out of the ordinary, if you take the time to digest what is revealed in his stated position.

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

Today in 1915 premiered the movie A Fool There Was, based on the play of the same name, which, in turn, was based on the Rudyard Kipling poem of the same, which, in its turn, was based on the painting The Vampire.

The film was one of the first from the nascent Fox Film Corporation andthe first to star Theodosia Goodman, an Ohio actress who had been bouncing around the fringes of Broadway for a number of years. Once signed to the lead role of "The Vampire,"* Miss Goodman changed her name to the more exotic "Theda Bara," presenting herself as a French actress who had come to America to practice her craft.

The play and movie are very simple - Bara's character is a spiritual and financial "vampire," draining her lovers of their money and, ultimately, their will to exist. She finally sets her sights on John Schuyler, a wealthy man named as ambassador to England, leads him astray from his career and family and, eventually, destroys him with her sexual wiles (though this is, of course, only hinted at in the film).

Here's the painting that started it all: The Vampire, by Philip Burne-Jones:

https://goo.gl/A3LLDy

Here is a still of Bara. On board a liner to England, she has just caught sight of her prey:

https://goo.gl/pN42nt

Although the movie is available on DVD, it is also available in full on YouTube. If you want to see Bara the seductress in action, just forward to 24:30 and watch her go; check out, especially, her smug little smile when she knows she's landed her fish!

And yes, I know you're sick of seeing this, but a man's got to do what a man's got to do. Click on my nic for a link to my website, where you can read an excerpt from my Theda Bara mystery novel, The Director's Cut as well as a preview of the still-in-progress sequel, The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*in neither the play nor the movie does she have a name.

In an 8-3 ruling, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said the now-repealed law against wearing unearned military decorations was a ban on a type of symbolic speech Although the government can forbid falsehoods that cause tangible harm, like fraud or perjury, the Constitution restricts government regulation of expression based solely on its content, the court said.

The Supes already gutted SV 2005. This case involved one of the left over gristly bits of that act.

SV 2013 is still around, but since that was written around a narrower "material gain" provision, and this ruling was associated with that -- SV 2013 looks wobbly.

76 one of the best lines I ever heard was in an Amos n Andy radio show: the boys were hired to tear down a porch... let's say by a white guy named Johnson:
Johnson on the phone: well, did you take care of that job I gave you?
Kingfish Stevens: Oh yessir, we got up early and went and tore down that porch at 1864 Sunset Boulevard.
Johnson: 18..? I said the porch was at 1684 Sunset Blvd!
[a long pause]
Johnson: Stevens, are you there? Did you hear what I just said?
Kingfish: Oh, yessir, I'm hearin' what you're sayin', I just don't believe you're sayin' what I'm hearin'...

You might check and see if you have the patch. If you connectivity is having issues you probably didn't receive the update automatically.

Mp4, how's that possible? I had heard Mr. Jello Pudding, ie Bill Cosby thought it was racist, so he bought up all the episodes and rights in order to insure it would never be played again.

I honestly don't know. It's part of a public access show called "Nostalgia Theater," which shows old westerns, TV clips, radio shows and so on. The Amos and Andy might be from the host's personal collection before Cosby pulled his stunt.

And the show is not racist. It's a funny sitcom of the early 1950s, so you take it as it is. And, BTW, the show was remarkable for being entirely black; I don't think white characters were ever seen.

The Allied advance toward Monte Cassino continues, slow but steady. The next obstacle that looms is the Rapido River, just over a mile from Monte Trocchio. The front line is now within three miles of the town of Cassino, and about to become bogged down in a major way.

No matter what anyone says, he is not a Conservative, but he is tremendously better for Kentucky than the last governor. And so far he has kept his #1 Campaign promise which I find refreshing.

He was always paling around with Blumenthal and his group and got a big time bailout from him for his personal company that burned to the ground. Blumenthal also shielded Bevin from numerous tax liens that were placed on his house and business. Bevin made the Hartford Currant's list of the largest tax evaders in the State three years running.

142 On December 17, the New Orleans City Council voted to remove four Confederate statues from the city, using obscure nuisance laws to strip these over 100-year-old historic monuments from their places of display. Mayor Mitch Landrieu said it was a courageous decision to turn a page on our divisive past and chart the course for a more inclusive future. Of course, the plan to remove the statues is itself divisive as a number of preservation organizations have filed lawsuits to save the monuments.

The New Orleans statues to be removed are of General Robert E. Lee, General P.G.T. Beauregard, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The city will also remove an obelisk dedicated to the Battle of Liberty Place

Are they really that desperate for a peasant class? Is this really all about propping up the welfare state in the face of dwindling birth rates?

Really, if you just wind up turning into Turkey or Beirut, who gives a crap about the welfare state? Is it just the Ruling Class desperately trying to cling to their sinecures for one more generation?

Last year was the first year Los Illegals could get licenses, so there was a huge surge in demand. Was supposed to be pretty difficult to get a DMV appointment. Should ramp down this year.

And the licensees are supposed to be marked so they can't be used for voter registration and such.

226 I, for one, am really glad watching the SOTU is still optional in America. TFG drives me bonkers. This Iran "deal", for example, which the Iranians have not signed and whose legislature and Supreme Poobah have specifically rejected, drives me particularly crazy. Obama is about to give them $150 billion and the right to contract with Seimens for better nuclear equipment, so they can spread nuclear terror all over the place. TFG is the chief terrorist enabler in the world.

Seamus, I just wanted to tell you I bought To Save Us All From Ruin, though I haven't gone any further than the boys signing up for Uncle Sam. I do like the book; you have a nice touch at setting a scene. In fact, as I was reading, I was picturing it as a nice MGM wartime movie, with, say, Jimmy Stewart, Mickey Rooney and Robert Taylor.

241 I don't know if MWW is up this early OK time or not occupied something else, but in case he is, I'll put this here. I have a partial life today and won't be here much if at all. except maybe briefly for the art thread

I thought about what you said, and yes, I apologize for hounding J, West about his comment It only needed to be said once. I guess it'a because although I certainly can get angry and say the F word, I generally think that when I use it its sort of lazy speech. It's the shortest way to express displeasure, but it doesn't explain anything. In fact, since the word means literally to copulate why use it in that in complaining about charity?. He didn't explain what he meant he in his initial comment so all we're left with is "screw charity" and not in the sexual sense. Maybe if he had said, "I don't like charity; I think you should give people a hand up instead of a hand out" and then explain how he would do that it would have been better He sort of said that later, (about how charity can be misused) but the initial comment stood on is own. Since he didn't explain it, all I am left with is that he doesn't want to help[ anyone but his own family.

And since you expressed displeasure for "F the GOP" as a mantra and I disliked it used to refer to a landscape painting in the art thread maybe we're both in agreement as to the overuse or inappropriate use of that word. By quoting him so much I overused it

I enjoy your posts and I'm sorry if you think I was blasting my "ignorant cannon" at you. I like you and I like your posts and I would hope that whatever lapses I have here (and no doubt there are many), you can extend the grace to me in a way that I will didn't extend to J West by giving him the benefit of the doubt. Nobody s perfect here and we can all get agitated-I certainly can.

Take care

Plenty, from what I'm seeing around the web, but it is hard to sort out if I'm seeing different ones, whatever.

You won't see them listed as protests against immigrants as often as nationalists or right wing or whatever, typically with photos of them being water cannoned. But the numbers are there.

Also, there have been sporadic attacks on muzzies in Cologne and other locations. Put that together with the various articles saying Merkel effed up and may lose her job and you can tell we're not being told much. I bet Germany is on the edge of exploding over it all.

We have a friend who makes raku pottery (as does the missus). This involves removing red-hot pots from the kiln and plunging them into a vessel filled with balled-up paper or sawdust, which of course burns to create a reducing atmosphere. If you see a pot with a glaze that looks like metallic copper, that is raku.

Anyway, said friend was summoned for jury duty and was promptly dismissed when, in response to the question, "What do you do for a living?", she replied, "I smoke pots".

286 Life with family, weekend edition.

Our front door is two doors with six glass panes each.

A couple weeks back, as I reported, after many months of three ugly, taped-over broken panes (wind-caused), we finally got around to replacing them with plexi. Door looked clean and pretty once again.

Replacing the door glass with plexi has been ongoing for years. By this point, only one pane of glass was left. I didn't anticipate breakage because it's on the little-used side. Figured I'd get to it in the Spring.

Out-of-town son was in-town this weekend with his two dogs, the shy economy-sized dog and the frantic oversized beast. (These are urban critters who must be leashed to walk around the farm. And ought to be tied up when inside, at least the oversized beast.)

I let our own perfect-size dog out, along with Mr Cool the cat, and oversize beast goes frantic. He actually smashed the one remaining glass pane. Dog wasn't hurt, but once again I've got an ugly taped-over pane in the door.

Well, looked nice for a couple weeks.

Only dispute was between Victionary.com and MP4 over the origin of "vamp." Need some more serious dispute about that! As Wimpy says, let's you and him fight.

I always liked Wimpy's "Let's have a duck dinner. You bring the duck." And there was another catch phrase he would use whenever he was in trouble and trying to get out of it: "My name is Jones. I'm one of the Jones boys." I'm sure that was a reference to a popular catchphrase, but I've never bothered to look into it.

As far as "vamp?" The word does refer to the front part of a shoe, and dates from the late 1500s. But when referring to a femme fatale, it seems that the word was a slang contraction of "vampire" and comes from the play A Fool There Was and the earlier painting The Vampire. Etymonline.com says its use in this sense comes from 1911. I don't have my trusty OED at hand, so I can't pronounce definitively.

This isn't that far different from what the Russians used to do during WW2 with their POWs once they came back. The POWs would be accused of some bullshit charge like desertion, summarily tried and convicted. If you were lucky (?) you got sent to a gulag.

298 Any youse want a feel good story , read the bio story of the Clemson coach , Dabo Swinney . Yes , they lost but that he got to where he was is a story mede for the Big Screen , 'cept the guy is white and Christian . Otherwise his journey make The Blind Side a walk in the park . Sorry I don't know how to do links and stuff but the story comes up as #4 or 5 on your Google search . It is worth the read

301 The ESPN bowl sucks. Just a way to skim money for that shitty channel and corrupt college sports, oh and crap on fans. The national championship used to be over the air but no we have a extra game which give unpaid potential pros another chance at a golden ticket losing injury. Also it means the regular season aint worth crap.

303 I had Clemson and 7 points. I'm glad they scored that last TD.
