Posted by: Bandersnatch at January 05, 2016 11:01 PM (1xUj/) Not the lacquer, per se. It was painted with "dope" which is (was) standard aircraft paint of the day. Nitrocellulose resin (aka smokeless powder) dissolved in acetone, with a pigment composed of aluminum dust and red iron oxide. Red iron oxide + aluminum dust = thermite. So the Hindenberg was painted with a pyrotechnic mixture. And once that got lit off, probably due to static electric discharge, the hydrogen in the internal gas cells was done like dinner. Let me see if got this right. The SCOAMF is all about getting rid of all nuclear weapons.....yet 2 more countries have now got them and no one else got rid of all of theirs. That doesn't seem like less to me. Oh, wait, WE reduced OUR Arsenal so it's all good...carry on, comrade.

Oh, yeah!
I forgot, "Press the reset button," too. How in helll could I have forgotten Zero's magic reset button? Damn! Posted by: mnwxyz at January 05, 2016 11:19 PM (NiHAc) It wasn't a "reset" button. It was an "overcharged" (as in 'about to blow') button ... because the State department couldn't accurately translate one word into Russian ... a language that we have had to spy in and decipher and montior for almost half a century of the Cold War. But Barky and Shrillary's state dept couldn't even get that correc t for a very public (and stupid) diplomatic presentation. And then Shrillary had the stupidity to ask Lavrov if they had gotten it correct - since "we worked so hard on getting the right translation". LOL. A.Smythers, A Celt, #226:
"I remember reading Tom Clancy and asking how he could write some of the stuff he wrote 'cuz it was all classified." Ever read the part of The Hunt for Red October where he describes the backstory for the Son Tay raid? He mentions the preparations, the rehearsals, all of it extremely close-held, and recounts how on the day of the raid, a young Air Force intelligence officer walked into his boss' office and asked if there was a deep-penetration raid laid on for an NVA POW camp. In this story-within-the-story, the boss proceeds to grill the guy at length, trying to figure out who leaked, only to figure out that his subordinate had seen enough not-highly-classified pieces to put it all together. I wonder now whether the story was apocryphal, and Clancy wasn't creating a metaphor for any security breach he thought he might be writing. I get the sense it's not too hard to aggregate open-source nuke info into a highly classified bigger picture. Posted by: JPS at January 05, 2016 11:27 PM (9ziuC) 265

Not the lacquer, per se. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 05, 2016 11:12 PM (cKwwS) I remember seeing a TV documentary about it some years ago. Apparently it was a NASA engineer who first realized that, noting that aluminum powder was an ingredient in the Space Shuttle's solid rocket boosters. Plausible? Posted by: Duncan MacLeod, The Highlander at January 05, 2016 11:40 PM (COpZ4) ---- Kind of, ISIS certainly does have the cash, though I'm not sure they'd waste it on something they weren't sure was going to work and they would know it would be one-time event only. They've already show then envoke nearly as much fear and chaos with far less money, and part of that is in people knowing they're not one-time events. So frankly they get more bang for their bucks I think shooting people and cutting off heads, cause western leaders for the most part can ignore that without political trouble. Their standard tactics of barbaric violence, infiltration, and outbreeding have always worked in the past. The cowardly, self-loathing Western leadership is more dangerous than any nuclear weapon. The Amchita 5 MT test cause a 7.0 earthquake A 5.0 earthquake is 1/100 of that. If it scales linearly, that means the Nork test was about 50 kT or a boosted fission device. A boosted fission device uses tritium for a little extra kick and tops out at about 100 kT. Posted by: Whitehall at January 06, 2016 04:57 AM (C/qzM) 291
Wikipedia says the 2013 NorK test registered 5.1, and it was estimated at anything between 5 and 16 kt, so a lower yield than Little Boy.
