1 Morning!

Posted by: Molly k. at January 05, 2016 06:50 AM (w/CJV)

2 Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, January 05, 2016. On this day in 1949 Harry Truman unveiled his proposed "Fair Deal" Program. It was a 21 point program of almost all new socialist programs similar to FDR's new deal. And among these 21 points was a call for "universal healthcare". IOW, Truman really was a continuation of FDR. I have no idea why so many people think he was a good President. And since the Republicans controlled congress only a few of these things made it through. And BTW, contrary to the now popular AOS meme, he was my first President.

4 The US Pacific fleet has shrunk to dangerous levels thanks to that BS budget "sequester deal" made by Boner several years ago which allowed Obama to continue to throw more money into his socialist programs while cutting military spending to the bone marrow. This has only encouraged countries like China to become more aggressive and it is worrying our allies in the Pacific regions. History has shown every time we cut back like this it leads to a much more expensive and dangerous war. But you can never tell liberals that. I also note something in this article that I knew from past experience, fewer ships mean longer patrol times and lower moral.

5 The two ranchers in OR involved in the armed standoff have turned themselves in to do their 5 year prison sentences. I consider them to be political prisoners going to the goolag because they refused to bow to Obama's BLM. Under Obama we have become 1950s Russia, the political atmosphere, the economy, and a lawless thug running the show.

7 Three NFL teams are looking to move to L.A. over disputes for new stadiums. Why is it that these millionaire/billionaire owners think that the public should pay for their football stadium for them to continue to rake in the cash? Because there is a history of that? And no, there has never been any reliable proof that these flashy stadiums and football help local economies.

14 Some of the details of Obama's illegal pen and phone law on Gun Control are leaking out. One of these is a call for doctors to report "mentally ill" patients to the FBI. Under the real law these kind of actions require a court order as do all other actions to curb citizen's constitutional rights. Does this sound familiar? 1950s era Russia liked to declare citizens mentally ill as an excuse for curbing their rights. I have no problem with withholding guns from crazies as that should be done. I do have a problem with doing that based on a low level bureaucrat opinion without involving the courts.

15 So what has been the impact of Obama's gun control policies via pen and phone (remember he has already jacked it up once before). No reduction in gun crime, but a whole lot of new guns sales. The US set a new all time record for gun sales in 2015.

In Failure Theater news:

House Republicans will begin the 2016 legislative session with another vote Wednesday attacking the Affordable Care Act and defunding Planned Parenthood. Using the budget reconciliation process allowed the Senate to consider the measure without the threat of a filibuster. Obama has said he will veto the measure, and congressional Democrats have the votes to sustain it.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said the vote, which is expected to pass with mainly Republican support, will "immediately set a tone" about the path Republicans plan to set for the country.

All other candidates poll in single digits, with retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson at 9 percent, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 6 percent, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 4 percent and businesswoman Carly Fiorina at 3 percent.

81 I read and heard some commentary the Obama EO on gun control is no big deal and has no major changes, mostly red meat for his cultist. That may be true but this is a foot in the door, incremental approach. See what the reaction is, fight off any lawsuits, let the public accustomed to this and propose something bigger in a few months. Remember, the first EO on immigration were much smaller and hardly noticeable and applied to relatively smaller groups of illegals. There was already a lot of chaos and non-enforcement before Obama but his limited EO mushroomed into the complete breakdown and open borders we have today, and much of the public accepts that as normal, even good. It would be naive to think Obama intends to stop with this limited gun control rules.

83 And no, there has never been any reliable proof that these flashy stadiums and football help local economies.

The Rams were brought to St Louis in the 90's, in what was lampooned as the WORST DEAL IN SPORTS HISTORY. Now the civic leaders, the state of Missouri and apparently, the NFL want to build a new stadium in downtown St Louis. To replace the shitty barn/dome that the Rams (hopefully) used to play in. All these contortions for 8 home games per year. Maths, how does it work?

Okay. Take a look at your fuel gauge, just to be sure.

In a system that old there's a sight guage to detect flame or no flame. They tend to get a little sooty over time and don't always 'see' that the oil is flaming. So it stops the flow of oil unless reset. Service call unless you know someone handy to 'pop the top' and wipe the glass clean. With power turned off of course. The transformers in those systems are like little tasers. Trust me on that.

Depends on how big the school is and if they have another similar class. Public schools have become a den of mediocrity in the past 50 years and about the only thing you can do is pull them out and put them in a private school. Great White Soctsman(?), this is from the fact sheet:

"The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is making
clear that it doesn't matter where you conduct your business - from a
store, at gun shows, or over the Internet: If you're in the business of
selling firearms, you must get a license and conduct background checks."

That seems fairly clear to me that they want everyone who is selling a gun to conduct background checks, regardless of volume

From this date in 1944

Jan 5, 1944 - The EZ Dog Journals
Cool and cloudy. Attack on all fronts bogged down by dug-in and fortified resistance. Gerry artillery got our range for the first time. Dropped over 40 rounds 170 mm in battery area. Two direct hits on C.P. which stood up fairly well. Officers mess tent cut up. Fortunately only two men hurt, one from our battery, neither seriously. Far too close for comfort.
We fired more than 9500 rds from 1800 to 1800.

This one pretty much speaks for itself.

118 "I also note something in this article that I knew from past experience, fewer ships mean longer patrol times and lower moral."

These op tempos also mean that the ships are going to have less time in port for repair and refit, and they'll wear out faster, and they may not be ready to fight when called upon.

If Congress had any sense regarding matters naval *, they would be paying close attention to INSURV reports. These occasionally now leak into the public domain, and leaked ones make for alarming reading.

USN warships are deploying, including to dangerous hot spots such as the South China Sea and the Persian Gulf, with busted systems. Including busted sensor, defensive, and offensive weapons systems. Nothing to go wrong with that plan **, you can be sure!

* The only prominent figure on the Hill who seems consistently interested in the Navy is John "Old Man Yells At Clouds" McCain. Who is a former naval aviator and who is hence most focused on the air wing and CVN side of the Navy. Which is important, but not the whole picture, and the systems readiness difficulties are the worst in the smaller surface combatants, not on the carriers.

** An inadvertent but revealing pun. The people who are stirring the shit in the South China Sea are the Chinese navy, the PLAN.

125 FenelonSpoke, no suggestions, but prayers for relief for you. And peace for your son in this regard.

Y'know...

I was raised to think of prayer as something one did for better subjective communion with God and adjustment to God's will, rather than to effect any big changes in the "outside world."

Always seems like people get the answer to prayer and thank God, or don't get the answer they'd hoped for, and, if they're wise, still thank God.* Not a good indicator of whether prayer really had any outside-world effect. Folks will believe what they want.

The Bible Belt community around me of course believed in the power of prayer to induce God to do miracles. Oral Roberts made the lame walk every week on teevee. I never discounted power-miracles, but ... they were always something that "happened to someone else."

Still, I don't think I know anything, much less how the Spirit works in the world, so, I join in prayers-at-a-distance and all that ... can't hurt, right? I rarely ask for them, though, because of aforementioned upbringing. And the long, long list of what I'd ask prayers for....!

* Some idle musing on praying & thankfulness I did a while back: Be Sure to Say Thank You

Over a thousand "migrants" were brazenly assaulting and raping women, robbing people, and shooting fireworks randomly into groups of people at a Cologne train station. The "migrants" were groping and tearing the clothes off German women as they tried to escape the station, while shouting "fucky fucky" at them and calling them sluts. Even though all this mayhem and lawlessness was filmed by CCTV cameras in the station, only 5 of these assh*les have been arrested.

Snort. "Late-voting state".

Any of you who aren't Commiefornians have any idea how long it's been since a Republican primary vote in CA was material in a Presidential contest? That would be a LONG time, thank you very much.

And yet the senile party establishment stick with having places like Iow-eh and New Hamster go first, despite their crummy historical track records at picking eventual winners.

With regard to Carly Fiascorina? Memories of her run against Babs Boxer bob to the surface like punchbowl turds. Much like Mitt Romney running against Ted Kennedy, Carly often seemed to be attacking the incumbent Democrat *from the left*.

I get that people liked Carly for her polished arguments, smooth media skills, and consistent bare-knuckled attacks on Democrats. Guess what? Those are all learned skills. She certainly didn't show them when she ran for the Senate out here. She went and boned up on this stuff in the meantime. Why don't we have someone with more consistent conservative credentials learn those skills instead?

149 Wow, just watched the video and read the story about
what happened in Cologne, Germany on New Year's Eve. Over a thousand
"migrants" were brazenly assaulting and raping women, robbing people,
and shooting fireworks randomly into groups of people at a Cologne train
station. Just ordinary German citizens and taxpayers, trying to use
their own transit system, were assaulted by hordes of these low-life
thugs. The "migrants" were groping and tearing the clothes off German
women as they tried to escape the station, while shouting "fucky fucky"
at them and calling them sluts. Even though all this mayhem and
lawlessness was filmed by CCTV cameras in the station, only 5 of these

like the energy is just not there. I don't underestimate Bill's ability

Think of this from Bill's perspective. He is visibly fading away. He knows it. He's got only a few good years left. He'd frankly just rather go quietly hang out with the Energizer Bunny and die in mid-boff like Nelson Rockefeller. But since it's his "wife" running, he's got to make at least a token show of assisting her.

Under normal conditions, Hillary would face some invertebrate GOP establishment apparatchik who would never bring up the fact that Bill, rather than being a "womanizer", is instead a serial sexual predator.

In that scenario, if Hill won, which she probably would, Bill would coast through his sunset years as First Gentleman. If she somehow lost, he would retain his Slightly Tarnished But Still Widely Beloved Ex-President status.

But these aren't normal conditions. Trump. That's all that need be said.

Under these abnormal conditions, where Hill faces someone who will dig every last bit of dirt about her husband and shout it in a voice loud enough to reverberate around the world, Bill faces not only the prospect of getting blamed for Hill losing, but also of having his pleasant retirement prospects and slightly-tarnished-but-still-beloved reputation ruined.

Officers are privately contemplating what they would do should Trump become their commander-in-chief. And more often than not, they proclaim they will leave.

If this is true that they would rather have Barry weaken and fag up the military than Trump to build it up and strengthen it then we need to clean the Pentagon out immediately.

205 I left my former housemates with four young'uns trained last winter how to light the pilot and fire up the boiler, top off the water level and bleed air bubbles out of each radiator.

Still had to visit last night as Philly temps hit 16 degrees (zero wind chill) for a diagnosis and refresher course.

You'd think grad students could make the connection between cold drafty house and window screens where the storm windows ought to be. But Mom and Dad never explained any of this stuff, probably because Granddad or the help handled it all.

Well, just saw an article about how they are suppressing immigrant crime stories/stats in Germany.

Anyone who lives in an American "sanctuary city" knows how this works. When an illegal commits a crime they will withhold the name and just refer to then as a [country/neighborhood] resident, preferably without providing the name. But if you dig deeper you might see that it's some Spanish name and he's only been a resident for months.

Also in CO Hickenlooper has put out word that he wants no negative info about pot getting out, so we no longer see those stories about 7th graders selling pot candy at school, or toddlers eating mommy's pot cookie and getting sick -- instead, you can tell it's an issue because the local Children's hospital has started running PSAs instructing parents on how to ID if your child is sick from a pot edible and what medical assistance they may need.

221 I have another angle on China.

So I do reviews on Amazon and am a ranked (top 500) reviewer. Whoop-de-doo, I know. But part of the gig is that I get requests every day from Chinese companies asking to send me their dollar store crap for me to review. I don't waste my time but it is interesting to note that the products tend to run in cycles. For example, the big thing last year were selfie sticks...every other email from a Chinese vendor was for a selfie stick. Then it went to RFID-blocking wallets, then Bluetooth headsets, then LED string lights, then money belts, etc.

The thing shaping up now are makeup palettes, whatever the hell THOSE are.

My point being is that unlike requests I get from American or Canadian vendors, Chinese vendors all seem to be a bunch of different sellers hawking the same product. Very little variation in those requests. It's really weird.

247 The Obama administration announced during a conference call with reporters Monday evening that the president's upcoming executive order may require somebody selling even a single firearm to obtain a Federal Firearms License.

Yep. And, no, this isn't a "minor issue." If this is allowed to stand (and I doubt any Republican candidate with the possible exceptions of Trump and Cruz have the stones to overturn the EO) it is gun confiscation.

Because most people aren't going to get their FFL. So what happens when Grampa dies and wants to give his guns to his grandchildren? He can't run the background check - he's dead. Is the executor of the estate expected to do that? Most of the time the "executor" is old aunt Edna who happens to live close to Grampa and sort of has the time. Nope, those guns will be sold to FFL dealers (at best), meaning the family no longer has those heirlooms.

Treating this as anything less than back-door gun confiscation is not treating it with the seriousness it requires.

It's a back door to confiscation for sure. The first step which they're doing now is to make the FFLs the only way to acquire a gun legally. The next step will be to completely stop issuing FFLs. As existing FFL holders die off, or they get impatient and revoke all of them, nobody can legally become a new gun owner anymore.

I was off the site for a bit, so missed your previous comment.

Anyhow, depending on your State, as well as new Federal translations of existing law concerning finishing 80% Lowers, you may no longer be able to rent equipment to complete one.

Refinements in home level jigs and templates have made it possible to complete one using something as simple as a small drill press, available from Harbor Freight.

Search the internet for gun owners forums based out of your particular State, and there will almost certainly be a section or thread on gunsmithing and 80% lowers.

Not the best answer, but IANAL, nor do I want to pretend to be on the internet.

They're doable, and perfectly legal within the confines of State and Federal law.

287 (Updated willowed comment from ONT)

Obama is saying his gun control EOs are worth it if they save a life or two. You know what's proven to save a life or two: stop-and-frisk, in any large US city, over a weekend.

Either these Obama EOs (1) have some purported legal effect or (2) they don't.

If (1) then Obama is usurping the authority of courts to interpret statutes, agencies like the ATF to administer them, and the DOJ to enforce them, all of which are unconstitutional.

But the EOs in fact are more like (2) as they actually do very little.

AG Lynch is trying to satisfy her boss, and still live with her Constitutional duties, by trying to say that this is a "nothing burger" that doesn't really change much of anything legally because it's (2). But in principle it does because it's (1).

So the inevitable news and commentary cycle this week will distract us from the issues that matter.

The only good from this is that Hillary will be nailed to the mast on this, which at the margin can swing OH, PA, CO, NH, NV, VA and dare I say it NY!. Let us pray

Posted by: Ignoramus at January 05, 2016 08:43 AM (rs5De)

288 One other thing that this illegal order does is it ties in with something they have already been doing. Somewhere along the line that requirement that FFL holders hold applications for two years has disappeared. They now hold them for what I believe is much longer without a change in the law. AND the ATF has been coming around demanding that the store operators allow them to audit those records, i.e. see who has those guns now and log them.

In other words they have achieved back door gun registration simply through reinterpretation of the regulations. By requiring even private individuals to obtain an FFL they get registration on every gun that changes hands in the US.

And history has shown that the first step in gun confiscation is registration so they know who has the guns.
