Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | American Stocks Fall In Biggest Beginning-of-Year Sell-Off in Ten Years, After China's Shanghai Markets Plunge 7% In One DayChina, which already was in a crash, crashed further. The Shanghai market fell nearly 7% Monday on the first trading day of the year, its worst day since the height of last summer’s market crash. The selloff triggered circuit-breakers on their first day in effect, shutting down the market in the early afternoon. After falling 470, the Dow Jones recovered a bit to finish down only 276. China's apparently continuing to slide into a recession, and that seems to be hurting the global economy. Which is already weak, despite what Obama and his media bobby-soxers say. Meanwhile, a new Pew study finds that the middle class is being "hollowed out," -- some are becoming rich, more are becoming poor, and the vital, stabilizing force that is the middle class is shrinking. In 1971, about 61 percent of adults lived in middle-income households (defined as three-person households with incomes from $41,869 to $125,608 in today’s dollars). By 2014, that share had dropped to 50 percent. Meanwhile, the share of low-income households (households with incomes of $41,868 or less) grew from 25 percent to 29 percent, and the share of upper-income households (incomes above $125,60Maybe not, but middle classes wages have been stuck for a long while, since the "early 2000s." At least Bush had the 9/11 disaster to explain the economy. Whatever we do we need to elect Hillary Clinton president, to continue Obama's bang-bang success on the foreign and domestic fronts. That's all I know. Meanwhile... Obama continues using executive actions to benefit workers -- Foreign workers, that is, at the expense of American ones. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Posted by: JackStraw Gordon Chang has been predicting this for nearly 15 years. Maybe at last he will be right? The Chinese economy is a riddle wrapped in an enigma. There is so much hidden in their banking and finance practices (with the government directly involved, how could that happen?). Pew calculated household incomes, adjusted for inflation, all along the economic spectrum and found that, until the early 2000s, most households reaped slow but steady increases. Growing inequality did not siphon off all gains for those who are not rich...
Early 2000s. We keep seeing this as the high point of the middle class. Over the next buncha years 5,000,000 manufacturing jobs disappeared and coincidentally 5,000,000 American families moved from the 'homeowner' bracket into the 'renters' bracket. So they want to blame Bush while actually Clinton pushing China 'permanent' most favored trade status is what pushed the American middle class off the ledge. Since the Chinese government pushed its citizens hard to invest in the stock market, then tried to prop up the market by refusing to let them sell their shares as the value of the investments evaporated, I would imagine investors over there are quite disillusioned right now. A "lack of confidence" as it were. I really think Chna's going over the edge.

We've seen this movie many times before, and it always ends badly, sometimes with bloodshed on an historic scale. Because of its one-child policy, China is about to get very old, very fast. This demographic phenomenon is unprecedented and will have far-reaching consequences. China's GDP growth has mostly been unsustainable BS. However you hide it, the value of an empty city is zero. This will affect China's financial sector, no matter how hard China tries to hide it. The World has focused on AGW as the ecological crisis of our times. It's actually the pollution that got exported from the likes of the US and then multiplied by non-existent Chinese environmental protections. If you think Beijing air pollution is bad, the water pollution in parts of China is actually far worse. The West "going Green" has poisoned China. Every so often the docile Chinese peasants rise up against their overlords. Developing ... Posted by: Ignoramus at January 04, 2016 05:55 PM (r1fLd) 74

>>I don't think anyone can really guess HOW big or how much the Chinese economy has grown. I've been there several times in the last 15 years, and the country certainly APPEARS wealthier in many ways, but again, how can you tell?
I go to Hong Kong more often than China but I think that also provides some clues. When I was in Hong Kong last year the government in Hong Kong was getting a lot of complaints about the number of Chinese flowing across the border looking for basics like baby formula and diapers. And this is a country that until very recently had a 1 child policy. I've no doubt that China has gotten a burst of wealth by opening up the economy a little and encouraging foreign investment. Shanghai looks an awful lot like any modern capitalist city. But any economy that is ultimately a centrally planned, government controlled corruptocracy is never going to work. And things like diaper shortages in China or toilet paper shortages in Venezuela are ironic and stinky canaries. Posted by: JackStraw at January 04, 2016 06:04 PM (/tuJf) 109

I've been reading a lot of Thomas Sowell lately; one of the things to be careful of are arguments based on household income over time. Households change; we have become affluent enough that most households have one or two incomes, where they once had one, two, three, four, and more.
"For example, real income per American household rose only 6 percent over the entire period from 1969 to 1996, but real per-capita income rose 51 percent over the same period. The discrepancy is due to the fact that the average size of families and households was declining during these years, so that smaller households were now earning about the same as larger households had earned a generation before." Now, that's not likely the explanation over the last eight years. One other point he makes a lot is that while "classes" may experience decline statistically, traditionally in America individuals within those classes are highly mobile. Something like 95% of people within the lower 20% will be in the middle within twenty years. To the extent that is no longer happening, if it is no longer happening, it is most likely that heavy regulation has significantly reduced mobility. Higher minimum wages, for example, really kill people's ability to gain experience, especially people who are not in the "upper class". And the massive regulations of the ACA have to be having an effect here as well. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at January 04, 2016 06:06 PM (2lndx) 122

I have always had the attitude of "work until the job is done" as a salaried grunt; changing my thinking to "it's five, I'm outta here suckas!" is going to go against everything I know. We'll see how it goes.

A desperate China is a dangerous China.
Posted by: Qoheleth at January 04, 2016 06:12 PM (iIzG7) The only question is - who's going to get warred upon- Japan or Taiwan? My bets on Japan as the Chinese movie industry has really amped up the Japanese as sub-human villains over the last several years- and with all the Japanese in China and Japanese companies in China, I'm sure they can whip up one of their patented xenophobic killathons that convulse them throughout history. Of course, China is vulnerable as hell to a coordinated attack upon their mega-dam system, which certainly Japan and probably Taiwan can bring to China's frolic. The smart move would be attack SE Asia....oil! Plus, weakish militaries. Or there's always India but not sure what the gain is there for them. Active duty Chinese military outnumbers Japan's active duty military by about 10 to 1. The US has a treaty obligation to protect Japan, but if push came to shove, I don't think the JEF would honor that obligation.

------- Just pointing out the disparity in standing armies. Plus the Chinese have been on a shipbuilding binge the last couple of years, mostly to challenge the US Navy in the Pacific. The Chinese have also been hinting about using a nuclear EMP burst to disable opposing Navies. Something like that could escalate real quick, unless they do it while the JEF is in office. The US has unprecedented creative power, yet the wise old men who created the nation are in the process of handing all power to women and minorities who have different priorities to the founders. We are only just starting to glimpse how different those priorities are, but I suggest that women prefer and will gradually work towards a society which more resembles an ants or bees nest than a western liberal democracy, because it's better for breeding. Inside humans are ants and bees (and sharks and jellyfish etc) genes which so far have no external impact because the carriers had no influence and male hunter genes were most useful. I predict that from the 21st century, atavistic traits will become more important to humans than those they've used so far.

another things besides smaller households ... money goes further now. Long distance phone calls were expensive, cars less dependable, TV a few stations, internet now gives us unheard of info ... etc.
Even the welfare class has AC, internet, cable ... their standard is like middle class of the 50's, without the hard work. But much of our productivity gains were captured by government, so the working class supports more people, and the donor class owns more power thanks to bailouts for corrupt millionaires. And the public union class was enriched and retired early, but thrust upon us more and more commie "progressives". We allowed it as quality of life was still improving, though liberties were eroding. The (private) Federal Reserve was supposed to stabilize our currency, but they took on a new role of propping up the stock and bond markets. It is debated whether they are actually IN the stock market, but Greenspan long ago thought that was acceptable. Maybe the DOW should be at 5500, not 17000. You can bet Goldman Sachs will still tell clients to buy even as they are short, as they did with housing. party on Garth Posted by: Illiniwek at January 04, 2016 07:21 PM (5Gpe2) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.0462 seconds. |
