I can't...just can't...eat the black eyed peas, but I will be surrounded by them today with lots of family, so my I think my luck will runneth over just by proximity to the bean itself.

The audourbs were amazing...Steak, Lamchops, Cornbeef and Pastrami, Clams Oysters , Baked clams, Lox, all sorts of pastas, fresh fruit and veggies ( not that anyone wasted time with them), and all sorts of other foods to many to remember.

The only thing that made it at all tolerable for me was the wife gave me leave to dig out some of my old video game consoles (Atari, NES, SNES) so I finally got to try out some of the cartridges I'd acquired since the last time I got them all out.

143 Someone mentioning salt pork (fatback) upthread has made me nostalgic for Dad's (only?) recipe, pigs in blankets.

Now, I know there are lots of interpretations of pig in blankets. There's hot dogs baked in dough, cabbage stuffed with rice and sausage, and some others. This is Dad's, so I will presume it was a New Hampshire thing.

You slice the salt pork and rend out all the fat, leaving crisp bits of fried fat. You pour an egg batter into the hot fat and as it's cooking you drop the crisp bits into the batter.

Dad always served it with mashed potatoes and carrots. Apparently this tradition was important.

We only had it when Mom was out of town for a few days because she claimed to hate the smell of it all so much.

Milady and I stayed up late, for us old poots. Drank egg nog and watched half of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," which I would say I hadn't seen since it was in theaters, re-release in 1963 says iMDB. Milady has never seen it.

Would've slept later this morning, but the year was calling me, saying, "get on with it!" Or, maybe it was that darn yeller cat.

Haven't had our black-eye peas yet today, but last thing Milady did last night was put 'em on to soak.

But you shpuld definitely go see an eye doc.
A couple weeks ago my kid just started complaining that her eye hurt and felt like there was something in it. After a couple of days of no other symptoms but still feeling it we went and there was a tiny speck of something embedded in her cornea.
*shudder*
anyway eye doc took ot out with tweezers and gave her eye drops and she was fine in 12 hours.
He said it's pretty common.

As 1944 opens, the Allies are continuing their slow advance up the Liri Valley and largely stymied all along the Gustav Line. Pressure is mounting for an amphibious landing further up the coast, to put pressure on the German right flank and threaten cutting of supply routes from the north. Winston Churchill is a big advocate of this plan- Operation Shingle.

There is. I made sure my kids were exposed to music from many decades. Now they're just as likely to listen to something from the 50s or 60s as more contemporary stuff.

Also, the radio station I work for plays classic hits mainly from the 70s and 80s. It always surprises me how many people in their 20s and 30s say they listen to us.

My music grad daughter (age 26) loves the classic old music from the 60s, particularly the vocal groups. Also Motown. She says today's bands don't sing 4-part harmony like that any more.

Pretty much anything on the radio. Though I did used to listen to quite a lot of WFMU. They call themselves freeform radio, and boy do they ever mean it. A buddy of mine used to listen to 'em when he lived in NYC, and says that one day the DJ thought it would be a good idea to read the phone book. So he did. For three hours.

445 Jones pulled the original band together. And he was a talented musician. But he had a Dr Jekyl/Mr Hyde personality and was one of those people that should have stayed away from drugs. Acid is not kind to some folks and he seemed to have spiraled out of control on it.

Apparently here you're supposed to eat lentils, because they're shaped like coins, but neither of us like them so we're having some round pastas filled with mushrooms.

I'm not sure if we're supposed to eat the marzipan toadstools and "good luck pigs" or if they're like American crappy fruitcake and we just pass them back and forth for years. They're cute, though.

I can only listen to music written between 1800 and 1911. Was there awful music written then? Yes: I don't listen to that either. Am I a music snob? Maybe. Public radio stations play the WGBH Boston feed (pre-NPR) of Vienna at 11 AM every New Years Day. I never watched the TV because (1)Cronkite and (2) the many voices of the translations are so effing cool.

And the greeting, at the end, to "All good friends of Austria everywhere." Followed by the Radetsky, what in Yerp is called a cavalry march and the US a circus march, a march written for horses, with the sound of hobnails on cobblestones. A mild and friendly...threat. The Caliph thought he could take Vienna. The Caliph was wrong.

"A sound we all hate to hear, but sooner or later it's bound to happen" (WOPR, do you remember that local reference from NWOH?)

478 Milady is up! I told her, good, because the black-eye peas she put on to soak last night won't cook themselves.

Told her Grampa Jimbo says you only need to soak 'em 4 hours, not overnight. (Adding, yeah, but you gotta wait four hours with that method versus sleeping through it.)

Milady replies, well, there's always the quick-soak method: Bring the peas and water to a boil, boil for about two minutes, cover tightly, turn off heat, and let soak for an hour.

FYI for those of y'all who forgot to set 'em to soak overnight.
