Professor Whinybotom: Saying You Like the Beatles is a Microaggression That Invalidates My Puerto Rican Cultural Experience or Something

Good God.

I'll believe people are oppressed when they can shut the f*** up about problems that aren't even First World Problems -- more like the problems of the most pampered, privileged cadre of the First World.

1963: Firehoses and dogs on civil rights demonstrators

2015: "My friend told me I should listen to Eleanor Rigby and it hurt me in mi corazon"

I'd say our civil rights work is done, then.

The event which signaled to me that civil rights work is done was when Dr. Skip Gates, lavishly compensated and fully tenured professor of African-American Studies at Harvard University, living in a splendid home in the nicest section of Cambridge, MA, broke into his own house after forgetting his keys.

The Cambridge cops came to investigate, and had the temerity to ask Dr. Gates for photo ID, and all hell broke loose. Gates then proceeded to call up three black friends to vocally complain about Whitey cruelly keepin' a brutha down.

Those three friends being (a) the black mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts, (b) the black Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and (c) the black President of the United States of America.

70 Ya know I was thinking about this in my long drive home
What if the next president proposed huge subsidies for universities that had large proportions of their graduates as STEM majors, instead of, say, useless Fill-In-The-Blank Studies majors?

Now, I would prefer that the next president instead board up the Department of Education and then burn it to the ground.

But if this isn't going to happen, then use it as a weapon against the left.

This would serve to divert students away from useless majors and into majors where they are much less likely to wind up as libtards.

111 I liked this part better than the Beatles thing:

Rodriguez claimed that there are many examples of people in this "dominant culture" acting like jerks because they're just not enlightened enough to realize that they're doing so - such as the people at the playground who jokingly ask his three-year-old son if he has "has a girlfriend yet," when really Rodriguez "truly [does] not know what [his] son's sexual orientation, or gender identification for that matter, is and will be."

I think the whole male-female sex thing goes well beyond culture ...

Shit, he doesn't even know if his kid is going to identify as a Zimbabwean, yet, either. I think Rodriguez ought to get his family out to Zimbabwe, quickly ... just in case.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at December 30, 2015 08:51 PM (zc3Db)

112 This guy is crazy. He also complains when people ask his three year old if he has a girlfriend. Not because of the sexualization of his toddler. But because he doesn't know if he will be gay.

Which is in itself sexualizing his three-year-old son.

121 Well, this is funny because I know plenty of old white left-leaning boomers who think the Beatles were greater than Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven combined. A Hispanic guy questioning the greatness of the Fab Four and calling them racists would send them into a tailspin (although I don't think many black people ever succumbed to Beatlemania).

White lefty boomers are the ones who have labeled CW racist music - they never thought their own musical tastes would be called into question.

(I'm a Stones fan, but I never understood how on earth those skinny white English boys got away with "Brown Sugar" in 1971. My only guess is that nobody knew what the hell Jagger was singing - there would have been riots if people had actually heard the slavery wet dream lyrics.)

168 An ethical problem has presented itself, and I could use the Horde's guidance.

The boss bought a crap-ton of cases of cheap-ass "sparkling wine" and Bailey's Irish Creme, and gave orders for its distribution to her loyal retainers and grateful serfs.

This done, I find that she over-bought, and we've got six bottles of the wine and 12 of the Bailey's left over.

Now, the receipts and invoices she gave me, after checking, don't note these items - the liquor store delivered extra, a little "holiday bonus," according to them, for all the commerce we put their way.

So, here's my question:

Do I share the 3 wines and 6 Bailey's with my girlfriend, and then use the balance of the loot in my trunk to corrupt the morals of one of my charming young assistants? Or do I corrupt the sweet young thing first, and then go see the girlfriend?

Not exactly. Yes, there were lots of Beatle imitators at the time, but they also inspired Dylan to go electric, and his folk-based lyrical sophistication revolutionized rock music on both sides of the ocean. He and The Band went on to basically invent country-rock, which opened up all kinds of new possibilities. British groups like Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span took Dylan's cue and electrified traditional British folk music. The reverberations went in all directions.

There is no ethical dilemma. Your girlfriend, by virtue of the fact that she is not your wife, has revealed herself to be a brazen hussy. Therefore, you cannot be held liable for any deceit you perpetrate on or against her.

"Charm" your young assistants at your leisure, and the only consideration you need... eh, consider is whether you are likely to be caught or not.

Oh, yes. Lets just ignore the fact that Dylan and the Band were busily holed up at home and synthesizing folk, blues, country, gospel, and rock music in NINETEEN SIXTY FUCKING SEVEN.

And that rumors were swirling around about what they were doing in there, and every rock musician in the known universe was interested and curious.

310 I think this is item #976434674334 in the series "Racism is dead"

I mean FFS... THIS is all that they can find to complain about? The fact that his white Beatles fan friend wanted him to like the Beatles too?

This has to be proof of the saying that if all you have is a hammer every problem looks like a nail. Once you have to start finding "micro" aggressions, you are pretty much admitting that all the big problems are solved. After all, if your house is falling down, you don't worry about the fact that there is a screw lose on the closet door handle.

I also wonder what is next. . Banning white out because it's racist? After all, it is used to cover up ink which is usually blue or black, so it is a symbol of white power and privilege, and reminiscent of the master slave relationship. And maybe misogynistic too, since it can be used to remove periods. . And a symbol of rape culture since they could be removed whether a (female) wishes them to be or not. It's probably a tool of the patriarchy and hetero normative too since some of it comes in a bottle that looks like nail polish.

On second thought maybe I have stumbled on the next big human rights issue of our time

Probably not that many times. Back in the day, protective coloration was a survival skill--you didn't do full flame until you were in New York, LA, or Hollywood. My Mother was a huge Liberace fan and I can still remember how shocked she was when someone told her he was gay. She said, "So he's 'funny' like so and so's child, the florist." Yes, Mother he is. Entirely depends whether or not our electronic libraries are still accessible in 200 years. If yes, then yes. If no, then no.

Handel, Mozart, and Bach were just a handful amidst tens of thousands of other composers that have been lost in time. The only reason why we know of them is that their pieces have been continuously in rotation by live symphonies until the advent of mass communication tech.

349 Just saw "The Hateful Eight".

Is there such a thing as-

Mega meh?

Almost entirely content free movie.

It's like Tarantino saw an Agatha Christie based mystery like "Murder on the Orient Express" or more likely "and then there were none."-

and decided, "Hey, I gotta make me one of those. Only, baby, am I gonna Tarantino this bitch up!"

and then somewhere along the line forgot the mystery or more likely found that good murder mystery writing is haaaaarrrrd and just went with the Tarantinoing the bitch up.

The form of the Agatha Christie drawing room mystery is still there-

Up to and including Samuel L Jackson doing his best Hercule "Ima straight up murder your ass" Poirot
explaining to the remaining suspects how the murder was committed.

-but the whole thing is bloodless, despite all the exploding squibs of red dye and almost wit free.

One thing you expect from Tarantino is some great dialogue....but-

Nope.

Lotsa attitude but few laughs. Or even interesting interactions between characters.

Seriously, this movie good lose a good hour to hour and a half and it would be much much better.

I think even Tarantino realizes how badly he failed to deliver a good drawing room mystery-

so he spices the thing up with some SJW-college dorm style race relations/revenge nonsense he probably had left over from "Django".

And ends it all with a heartfelt message of hope for the future when men of good will and character from both of the only two races that matter, Black and White, come together to kill them some nasty, ole raggedy ass white bitches. Amen and Good Bless (or damn) America.

Really.

At the end-

There wasn't a wet eye in the house.

Well, okay there was one.

Some old, fat, white chick was crying as we walked out of the theater.

So, maybe...maybe she'd seen something I missed...

Something deeper and true.

Maybe....just maybe...

"The Hateful Eight" was an allegory of how-

Hillary! is going to get her drunk, pasty white, played out ass beaten mercilessly next November-

in which case I give it 5 Stars and Two Thumbs Up!

Wait for it on HBO.

There's also that strange bond or whatever it was between old women and gay entertainers. Liberace's audience was 80% blue haired ladies. I grew up not far from Liberace's old neighborhood and I remember the little old ladies- who all loved Liberace - also doted on a boy in my sister's class who, even at age 4, clearly preferred playing dolls with the girls to running around with the other boys. (And yes, he left for Greenwich Village as soon as he graduated from college.) Whenever the men would make disparaging comments about Dennis, they'd say, "Now, you let him alone! He's a good, nice boy - a little different, but nice!"

I think back then the gheys aroused the sympathy and the protective instinct of many older women - because the gheys were, in fact, more vulnerable then. I don't feel the same way my mother and the ladies of that generation did, because I no longer perceive them as being the underdogs - quite the contrary at this point.

398 At some point the what the Left has is operant conditioning. Push the button, express the action, get a cookie.
The liberals, the left, originally hated Skinner and his behavior modification. I remember the pearl clutching about how it only changed behavior not fundamental beliefs. But then the realization came: No need to convert when you can just train, no need to break concepts to basic ideas so they can be understood, so no need to review the tenets of belief. This is useful when you have no overall strategy or fundamental philosophy beyond "win everytime"

And so you get stupid goobs who only know how to emote and express action to keep getting the cookies, and get angrier and louder if the cookie doesn't come.
It isn't really the end of leftism in any ways, any more than the failure to truly understand the goals of International Marxism is in any ways an indication of the fall of the North Korean state.

Ban "continuing resolutions."

Ban "omnibus budget bills."

Ban "baseline" budgeting; mandate zero-based budgeting.

Ban "entitlements"; make the congress-critters vote every year for every frickin' dollar they spend.

440 And you better believe that if you serve in any Federal position, elected, appointed, or hired, your immediate family (spouse, parents, children) are disqualified from ever doing so. For life.

443 BREAKING: New Year's Surprise:
Obama Regulation To Give Work-Permits To Foreign College-Graduates

President Barack Obama's Department of Homeland Security plans to publish the proposed rule tomorrow, the last day of 2015.

The 181-page rule focuses primarily on giving work-permits to foreign college-grads who will compete against Americans for white collar jobs, despite the large number of American graduates now stuck in lower-wage positions and struggling to pay off college debts. The rule will also make each foreign graduate much cheaper for U.S. employers to hire than many U.S.-born college grads.

"Obama has gone the Full Monty to bust the immigration system," says immigration lawyer John Miano. "What is going on is he is effectively giving Green Cards to people on H-1B visas who are unable to get Green Cards due to the [annual] quotas, it could be over 100,000."

444 I brought it up in an earlier thread, but Leelee Sobieski's portrayal of Joan of Arc was wonderful.

It was a two-part TV miniseries some years ago. I ought to buy the DVD and watch it again.

no, that is not fair to the relatives. they should not be prejudged to be hired improperly.

446 Slightly off topic, but if you read John Lennon's last interview (in Rolling Stone?) he comes off as a conservative. You'd never know this was the same guy who wrote that Marxist tripe 'Imagine' nine years before.

Also, I confess, I love the Beatles. Their music really was groundbreaking. Of course, George Martin had a hand in that.

447 The biggest architectural problem we have is the 17th Amendment. That totally destroyed the design of the federal legislature and removed the states, as states, completely from the federal loop.

The idea of the Congress was the people directly in the House, vs the states, as states, in the Senate.

The second big problem is the Supreme Court arrogating to itself the ultimate authority on interpreting the constitution. The framers were hoping impeachment would be a check on the judiciary, but that's become a dead letter.

A mechanism needs to be created that would allow an override of the Supreme Court. It shouldn't be easy, but it should be possible. And I would give that override authority to the states, as states, somehow.

Embrace the madness.

Create an American House of Lords.

Elected federal officials, at the ends of their term, automatically are enrolled in the American House of Lords, where they receive a nice fat One Percenter salary from the government, get sent (with their immediate families, mistresses, gigolos, or other, sadly severely limited "staff") to exotic out-of-the-way places (preferably with inadequate Internet access) for regular "conferences" and "summits," where they can opine lustily and argue with their Peers happily over whatever minutia takes their fancy.

In exchange for this high honor and cushy retirement plan, they simply can never hold any position or office of trust or profit with any other entity, public or private, during their tenure in the House of Lords, or until they die, whichever comes first.

I'm not sure this would be worse than what we have now.

462 Seriously, if you like The Beatles, be sure to catch Fab Faux if you get the chance. They're five NYC-based studio musicians who are not your ordinary Beatles cover band. As live musicians they're actually better than The Beatles as they play complicated later works live, sometimes with the backing of up to ten back up players
