And yet, despite this staggering number of attempts, Hollywood has still only managed to make one good one: The Fugitive, starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. I mean, it has everything: fugitives, one-armed murderers-for-hire, trains, beards, dramatic standoffs in tunnels, Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones, Harrison Ford confronting a corrupt doctor in front of a hotel ballroom filled with his peers, Julianne Moore for a second, everything. It should be on TV all the time, instead of just almost all the time. The Fugitive is the only good movie.Don't believe me? Look at the evidence.

IKEA Furniture Test Proves Girls Are Dumb
Well not quite but men do seem to have the edge at spatial problem solving.
The study asked 40 men and 40 women, all university-aged, to put together an IKEA kitchen cart by themselves. Some people got copies of the assembly manual. Others only had a drawing of the final cart.With the instruction manual, men and women assembled the cart in about the same amount of time on average, and at roughly the same level of quality. Both genders took around 23 minutes to put the cart together, and on average they only made a few small mistakes, like forgetting some screws, for instance.
For those without the step-by-step diagrams, though, the difference between genders was dramatic. Men took around 24 minutes on average, but women took over 28 minutes, a difference of over 20 percent. Had the researchers not cut people off after 30 minutes, the gender disparity might have been even wider. Women were also far more likely to have major problems with their kitchen carts, like missing a shelf or a railing.
For some reason Jazz Shaw seems to have difficulty simply accepting that men on average are better at spatial type of problem solving and that furthermore because of the wider variability of men when it comes to intelligence-related skills the top 5 spatial problem solvers of a mixed group are likely to be men - as are the bottom 5 as well. Men and women are different in some areas and that's okay.

When President Barack Obama acknowledged in September 2014 that "we don't have a strategy yet" to combat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), he stunned his supporters and detractors alike. Obama was similarly candid nine months later, when he announced in a June 2015 statement, "we don't yet have a complete strategy." But why not?Three reasons appear paramount. The first is the president's defensive approach to foreign policy. On too many issues, President Obama seems primarily motivated by what he wants to avoid rather than what he wants to achieve. Consider Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran, where Obama has sought to avoid military operations in recent years. Libya is the exception that proves the rule, in that the American role in deposing Muammar el-Qaddafi seems to have validated the president's instincts about the perils of what he terms "military adventures."
Secondly, Obama too often resembles a pedantic law professor: he is clearly quite skilled at pointing out the flaws in his subordinates' proposals. The problem is this: a professor's job ends at that point; a president's starts. Yet this president's avoidant foreign policy seems to prevent him from going further. Finally, Obama does not intuitively understand the exercise of power-not just how and when to use it, but its foundations, its psychology and its consequences. The result of these three factors is a "none-of-the-above" policy assembled from the shards of discarded options.

They seem to have missed the main reason: ISIS is obama's pet project. It's what you get when you ship arms and funds to the muslim borotherhood and successfully (if temporarily) overthrow the governments of Egypt and Libya. They're the only available force to unseat Assad which he is for some reason strangely obsessed with, so he has no reason to want to hamper them.
All the folks in congress and throughout the feral government with MB minders see it the same way, regardless of what they may say.

Got a few rounds in at the pistol range today. Some .22, .38spl & 9mm. I'm still accurate, but my shoulder certainly protests at both the Weaver and Isosceles stances.
I don't think I'll be shooting an IDPA match anytime soon.
Didn't know that a pain in the shoulder would also be a pain in the ass, too.

I will say that the 22 gun was kinda fun. The revolver was fun just because it was just like in the westerns. The Glock was a little scary. It has quite the recoil.

Forty-some years together, Milady and I are pretty happy to have complimentary skills.
I can better decipher a map and program a computer and fix a dripping sink, and other such rudimentary tasks - that she could probably handle okay with a few tries and enough time, but is happy to let me do guy things.
But even though I am okay as a cook, given known ingredients, I am in awe of how she can look in the kitchen, and where I see nothing to eat, she can easily manufacture a grand multi-course meal.

Chemjeff's first ten rounds, at 7 yards with the .22 Browning Buckmark UDX, could be covered with a standard playing card. Well done.
He had a bit more challenge with the Glock 17 and S&W Model 28, mostly adjusting to the greater recoil and muzzle blast. But, he didn't quail, and kept making a serious effort to shoot them well. He's a good and conscientious student, and will make a good shooter if he sticks with it.
As for my end.... I used a B-27 target at the same 7 yards. My eighteen rounds from the Highway Patrolman, could be covered with a quarter for the entire group. I was less precise with one magazine from the G-17, as the head shots were as much "pattern" as "group"... about two inches wide, but about five inches of vertical stringing. I'll have to install some of the trigger upgrades that Tam describes on her gun blog.
But with the Browning .22 Buckmark, I also turned in a dime-sized, fifteen round group at the same seven yards.
So yeah, I'm still in on the accuracy, but that's about all the shooting my shoulder could enjoy for the day.
And that, sucks.

Intermediate barrier penetration, penetration in general, expanded diameter all play a part in why different calibers are chosen.
Basically, if we were all perfect all the time, a .22 would be fine if you could sling a bunch of rounds really quick between the eyes.
But realistically that's not how it works, and you have to go with center of mass hits, which require a goodly amount of penetration and some amount of diameter for wiggle room.
But caliber wars are a big thing, and one I don't think I want to get into right now.

In the Navy, the rank of Captain is O-6, same as a Colonel in the others. Captain in the others is O-3, I think, below Major.
IIRC, on a ship, those O-3 captains got "promoted" to major, in name only, since no one but the old man gets to be called captain.

Don't be afraid of recoil. It won't hurt you. Unless maybe you are shooting a .50 Desert Eagle or some such. What recoil does do is add to the time it takes to re-acquire the target.
A 9 mm has much lighter recoil than I expected. Trivial, really. Practice a bunch with a 9 mm, and you should become pretty good.
Try several different makes and models of pistol. They aren't all the same, and some, for whatever reason, will be better suited to your hand size and temperament than others.
All other things being equal, a longer-barrel heavy pistol will have less recoil than a short-barrel, light one. Simple physics at work.
If you really have issues with 9 mm, look at FN5.7, or .22 Magnum.

I have a long and sordid history of deer hunting with an iron-sighted handgun, as well as PPC, IDPA and 3-Gun competitions.
Taking large game with a pistol pushes that adrenaline fueled stress button, but obviously, the deer ain't shootin' back at me.
But if you read the actual, first person writings of the gunfighters of the 20th century, you do discover that practice....lots and lots of practice, pays off when the SHTF, and that you really can focus on your front sight and sight picture in most instances.
I've never had to pull the trigger, but I have had to, on three occasions, see that sight picture.
I'll just say that the practice paid off, the sights were clear, aligned and steady....and that I'm awfully damn glad that the orders given resulted in compliance from the miscreant serving in the role of "target" at that time.
And yes, the after effects from the adrenaline dump are pronounced, to say the least.
Short of it though, is you're likely to fight like you train, so train well. That means finding quality instructors, and not some random range commandos. Good instruction isn't cheap, but what price for your life?

P.S. The newer interactive, video based police simulator systems are said to bring that stress level to 98%/99% of street reality. I've not got to run through one of those yet, but guys I know and trust, who have, swear by 'em for stress training.

I'm still bad to do that if I'm not careful. When I was sighting in the scope on my new LR-308 a couple years ago, I almost pulled the same thing. However, the arthritis started warning me before it got too bad.
My biggest problem is the damn noise. Thanks to Hollywood, every idiot thinks "silencers" completely kill the bang and make it go "pheww, phewww!".
If someone could just get the ban on suppressors lifted, I'd appreciate it.

The better and cheaper alternative to an actual full auto/select fire weapon is to get a bump stock for your AR or similar.
With practice you can get all of the fire rates you want and won't have to throw a switch.

It is, so I'm told. Big advantage is it holds a lot of rounds. But there are some .22 magnum pistols out there that look interesting, and which I would like to try my hand at shooting. I will probably go to the Scottsdale Gun Club in the coming weeks, and try a few rental guns. 1911 is on the "must try it" list, too.
I just figured chemjeff might appreciate some input from someone who is about as green as he is vis-a-vis handguns.

Finally in the deep home stretch of my Bond-a-week habit. Tonight's entry was Casino Royale, 2006. Nice to FINALLY see the franchise grow up a bit, and I admit I enjoyed it a lot, particularly for (a) the poker scenes, which I had to explain to my mom who was also watching, and (b) the way it revamped/toyed with all the old Bond conventions.

Poker? effing poker? In the book, which was the first of the Bond series, and arguably the least-gimmicky Bond novel, the game at the Royale des Eaux Casino was Chemin de Fer, which plays a lot more like blackjack than poker. Fleming explained it very well in the book.

Don't remember nothin', besides that my range bag was sitting four feet from this seat. So here goes -- they're green, on the right ear is "FutureSoundLab" with a logo, and....*flips 'em over*....on the left ear is "FutureSoundLab" with a logo. My guess is.....

Guess will get back to the writing. Suddenly decided to name each scene written so far with which character's POV that scene is with a number following. It has certainly made things pop out on who is getting the most scene time. And let's me know where I could flesh out things with another scene for a character to move the story along.

Most of Lightfoot's work was right in that groove.
If you don't think Canadian Railroad Trilogy wasn't an epic poem, you're only mistaken in it's length, it's not Homer's Odyssey.
Carole King is right up there with 'em, too. Dear GOD, she could write directly to my soul, and often did.
And Kerry-ite jerk that he is..... James Taylor was a hell of a writer. I can take a pass on his performance, but the man could write.
Don't overlook Billy Joel, either. Not the hits, but the other tracks on the albums. The man could write, like him or not, but he could write.
And the Elton John/Bernie Taupin collaboration. Just damn, but they nailed it more often than not.
But finally, I'll agree with this.
Johnny Cash was the best singer/songwriter of our time. We were blessed to have heard him.

Man, I don't even recognize Texas Hold 'em as poker. I used to play a lot of poker, dealer's choice, with friends, back in the day. Gave it up when it went from nickels and dimes to dollars. IMHO hold'em is definitely poker, although it's a bit artificial; it supposedly became the #1 variant played today by far, because it offers so many more betting rounds than classic draw poker. So theoretically at least, bigger pots can be built up.
Having said that, would love to play draw in an actual casino some day. Unfortunatley I've read the average age of a casino draw poker player in 2015 is "dead."

Eh. Have mixed feelings about CR. It's not a BAD Bond movie, it's more engaging than the 2 prior ones. It just isn't... Bond, anymore. Mads Mikkelson, or whatever his name is... made the movie as Le Chiffre. Take him out of the equation and the rating drops a fair bit. I dunno, it's a decent enough movie, but, it's just pretending to be "Bond" (yeah, I know the book... whatever... Bond books are different animals to Bond movies). I place most of the blame for this squarely on Daniel Craig. Worst. Bond. Ever. It's an ok entry, at best. Which is quite an achievement considering it's a Craig movie. Many, many rock musicians owe a debt to Elmore James.

I still listen to KKJZ and their weekend blues show "Nothin' But the Blues," and that's where I found a lot of this great stuff... but I admit I'm turned off by the station and the show's host these days. Hahahaha... fair enough. Can't fault anyone for liking CR. It's a fine flick in it's own right. But... and this is just my preference... I don't want my Bond to be grown up. I want the dancing girls, the gun barrel, the volcano lair and the supervillain with insane motives (and the quasi futuristic clothing and the sharks with frickin' lasers...) and I certainly don't want Bond to be some whiney, emo grumpy gus. Bond, not Bourne. Maybe it's just Craig, that bugs the shit out of me. Simply putting on a tux and offering quips does not make Craig... Bond. But, yeah, I enjoyed CR, despite my bitching.

Well, Cuba does have a great music tradition, if you can get past the politics. Check out the Buena Vista Social Club recordings with Ry Cooder.
I have never gone to Cuba. I know folks who have. Possibly one rationale for going: to experience what life really is in a Communist Workers' Paradise. And yes, you have to make an effort, but you can rent a car and tour the country without a "minder" from the State.

BTW, they're not the most popular articles, but if you ever get a chance you should look up people's olfactory experiences on the International Space Station. It's bad to leave the doors and windows closed for too long.
