Oberlin College...What Parents Would Send Their Children There? [CBD]

The Onion should probably just close its doors, because it simply can't compete with the reality of today's stunningly stupid, vile, self-absorbed, pompous asses who inhabit colleges across the country.

Oh, yeah, they have a political agenda that seems to be a combination of a puppy's desire for instant gratification with a hard-core Marxist's desire to burn down the West.
"One Man -- One Vote -- One Time"

If the president of Oberlin college had any balls, he would stand on a table in its biggest dining hall during its most crowded time, and tell everyone there to go f@*k themselves.

He won't. He will undoubtedly change the menu to more accurately reflect his cowardice and lack of any sense that perhaps children should hear the word "no" occasionally.

Anyway, I just wanted to repeat, as someone who's in the oil bidness when he is gainfully employed.. or at least when last gainfully employed...

I've checked, we're still importing somewhere between 30 and 40% of the oil used in this country... given that, I'm not sure I see the whole point of the deal Where We Get To Export Crude, since it's not going to be done to a very great extent, we still import oil and domestic production is still collapsing due to the whole crash going on.

I just wanted to say, for the record, I DON'T GET THIS.

I was thinking the same thing. The food at the chow hall when I was in school was not particularly good, except for the banana bread on Sundays. And that was spectacular-we begged and begged for the recipe, but it was apparently a state secret for the food services at Baylor.

Also, if these kids have this much time to be whining about offerings at the cafeterias, they have too little work to be doing. The professors are dropping the ball on their sorry asses and not requiring enough work for the credit.

41 On the removal of the crude oil export ban, I have seen it suggested that this is a long term accommodative measure by industry executives to the deliberate deindustrialization of the United States, and I tend to agree with that analysis.

Certainly no one is lining up to make billion-plus dollar capex outlays for new refineries in the USA. Not in a legal and regulatory environment where it's clear some unelected bureaucrat inside the D.C. Beltway can with "the stroke of a pen" ruin the return on investment permanently, as has happened with coal facilities in the last few years.

So the idea would be to export crude abroad, refine it at newly built refineries located in more accommodative domiciles outside the scope of Stateside regulators, and then re-import the high margin finished products like gasoline and jet fuel to the USA.

This will of course further shitcan already paltry job growth in the States, but neither wing of the Permanent Bipartisan Fusion Party have shown any real interest in preserving heavy-industry jobs.

I'm old enough to have noticed that trend-people whinge, you fix it, and then they find something else to whinge about. They don't want to be satisfied, because they find it enjoyable to complain about something-I guess it provides them with some sort of self-righteousness or justification.

Heck, I have done my share of complaining. But I certainly want to try to live a more positive life, because it's nicer to be around those kind of people. A constant complainer is boring after two to three minutes.

92 In Poland they have found five graves of possible vampires.

The vampire myths across the world are fascinating. My favorite is the one from New England where they believed vampires were buried and lay in their graves, but stole blood mystically from victims, feeding their still-beating dead heart in their corpse.

101 "The menu should be changed to the following, for each of the next 90 days:
Breakfast: Scrambled eggs, toast, yoghurt and orange juice."

That's pretty much how I recall breakfast in the dorm cafeteria.

Watery scrambled eggs full of shell fragments. White toast with margarine. Reconstituted vaguely "orange" juice with so much sugar you could stand a spoon in it. And of course percolator coffee that looked and tasted like it had just been drained out of the oil passages of a Peterbilt truck engine.

It is funny to have the special-snowflake student generation simultaneously insisting on haute cuisine meals, dorms that look like luxury spa reports, and Olympic caliber gyms, while bemoaning the high cost of college.

In Commiefornia, the public health authorities are constantly squeaking and beeping about hepatitis, which honestly is a thing: it's nasty, it's a major driver of health care cost inflation, and it's everywhere here now.

Except the two biggest single vectors for it are promiscuous gay sex hookups, and unlicensed+uninspected Mexican food trucks. So nothing actually ever gets done by the authorities, because those are politically untouchable constituencies in Commiefornia.

It's not even black.

The original association of blacks with watermelon, fried chicken, greens, etc., was made by Yankees who marveled at the eating choices of Southern blacks settling in Yankee cities.

Until it became a national meme, no Southerner would ever have associated such foods with blacks. Even now it's a stereotype that doesn't resonate below the Mason-Dixon line.

I wonder how re-watchable it is, though? The original Star Wars, people stood in line 4, 5 times to see it. Might be a huge peak over the weekend then tail off. Just how the studios love it, but theaters don't.

Each week a movie stays at a theater, they get a larger percentage of the box office. The first week, they're pretty much living on concessions. Films that stay forever in the theater eventually become worthless to studios, so they prefer big time opening weekends then dropping out of the theater in a couple of weeks to make room for the next film.

Actually, you can perfectly well do this, assuming 1) the plastic is such that it doesn't get too soft at the boiling point of water, and 2) you don't let all the water evaporate.

As long as there's water in the jug, the temperature will remain at 100 C. It's possible to boil water in a paper container over a Bunsen burner; I've done it as a lecture demonstration.

229 Who cares if a food is "authentic?"
Okay, as a point of cultural and historical interest, authenticity matters. But when it comes to eating, what matters is tastiness.

I have a Taiwanese SIL who is a pro chef, trained in Taipei. There are a lot of Chinese-American dishes she loves, if they're well cooked. And there are plenty of authentic Chinese dishes she wouldn't serve to a dog.

BTW, when she caters a spread for any group other than all Chinese nationals, she ALWAYS includes a bowl of her homemade fortune cookies. She finds that Chinese-AMERICAN custom absolutely delightful.

Needless to say, she did not go to Oberlin.

Yeah, L'Amour mentions boiling water in a bark container (which I used in Snowberry's Veil) on the same principle. However, I think plastic probably will melt too easily against a heat source even with the water to keep the internal temperature down.

Depends on the plastic. Plastics are of two broad types: thermosetting and thermoplastic. The latter soften with temperature; how much they soften at 100 C depends on the specific plastic, and how much it is cross-linked.

Thermosetting plastics don't soften with temperature. They burn first. Think, e.g., car bumpers, batting helmets, jet skis bodies.

When I was working in Phlly on a document discovery team many years ago, the blacks on the team never went with the whites if we decided to go out to an Indian or Thai restaurant. Or hell, even a French bistro, because they thought French food was just snails and frogs legs. They ate at pizza and fast food places, mainly. And these were college-educated blacks.

After that, I started noticing the absence of American blacks in non-American ethnic restaurants. Every one I've known has been very leery of "weird" cuisines.

Maybe this is why Obama hasn't met w/the TN shooting victims' families - the victims were all white males. How very boring of them.

I've checked, we're still importing somewhere between 30 and 40% of the
oil used in this country... given that, I'm not sure I see the whole
point of the deal Where We Get To Export Crude, since it's not going to
be done to a very great extent, we still import oil and domestic
production is still collapsing due to the whole crash going on.

Posted by: tbodie at December 19, 2015 01:52 PM (wmrFg)

and torque:

I'm in the business. You guys don't know what you're talking about. All crude oil is not the same. We are awash in light oil, due to fracking, and need to import heavier oil to physically balance our refinery capacity. Most of those imports come from Canada and Mexico, not the Middle East. You are correct, torque, in that it is just about impossible to build a new refinery in the US. However, the industry has been increasing capacity every year by expansion of the existing refineries, which is much easier from a permitting standpoint. We have about 18 million barrels per day of refining capacity, and demand for petroleum products is about 18-20 million barrels per day. However, we both export and import gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil, etc., because in some cases the refineries are concentrated on the US Gulf Coast and the demand isn't located where the refineries are (see also the note above about having too much light feedstock and not enough heavy feedstock, so the product slate we actually can make isn't exactly what we need). Exporting light crude and importing heavy will help balance the feedstock slate. It has been economically inefficient to have to run feedstocks that the refineries aren't configured for and make products that don't match what the market needs.
