Quote of the Day I

"Before Snowden we had a definite bias for action," explained a senior NSA official with extensive experience in counterterrorism. "But now we all wonder how the White House will react if this winds up in the newspapers." "It's all legal," the official added, "the lawyers have approved, and boy do we have lots of lawyers - but will Obama throw us under the bus again?"

How Evil Are You - Take the Quiz

This quiz from the BBC supposedly measures Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy which are known as the 'dark triad' and associated with, well evil apparently.

evilquiz3

Here's my result:

evilresults

And yeah the Machiavellian thing - it's a fair cop. Although I consider myself an ethical Machiavellian since when I use manipulation it's usually for moral good. But even back in high school my M.O. was always to get other more suggestible people to do the things I thought would be useful/amusing but which might have unfortunate negative legal or administrative consequences for yours truly. Which is one of the reasons why I've never been arrested or even detained and have no police record at all - yet have also never felt deprived of the exquisitely delicious thrill of Getting Away With It either.

Moe Lane: The Long Shadow of D&D's Alignment System

I was just thinking about D&D alignment out of the blue this past weekend and was considering how good of a model it is for explaining behavior in domestic and international politics. Of course the mature adult version of me thinks about the categories - lawful vs chaotic, good vs evil vs neutral - quite differently (and with more first hand experience) than the middle school version that first considered them while creating a character.

To sum up the D&D alignment system succinctly, it's as follows: you're either Good, Evil, or Neutral.  And you're either Lawful, Chaotic, or ...Neutral.  That gives you one of nine possible alignments (Neutral-Neutral is called True Neutral) to have, which will have an effect on what spells you can cast, what spells can be cast on you, what spells will detect you, and so on.  It's a remarkably fraught system when you think about the implications; after all, having one's moral quality be fully quantifiable can have any number of implications, starting with the fairly basic one that if something is inherently Evil then you can kill it without any kind of remorse.

...Still, some game companies try to work at giving players a range of alignment options. To give some examples... Bioware likes to go with a "Queen of the Girl Scouts" / "Ruthless Bugger" model whenever possible; Bethesda enjoys making you have to choose which faction you'll have to inexplicably permanently tick off in order to finish the game; and Projekt Red seems to do its best work riffing off of the relatively less used "Law vs. Chaos" axis instead of the "Good v. Evil" one. Of course, the disadvantage in all of this is that it seems that, the more you move away from a "we're Good and they're Evil" model, the less you get in the way of player options.  Or, to put it in a nicer fashion: the more you get what's called a "story-based game." ...I understand that this resulting lack of choice seems paradoxical, given that people have reacted to D&D's alignment system as being somewhat restrictive. And it is somewhat restrictive.  But as somebody once pointed out, so are the rules for creating a sonnet. Perhaps that's what computer RPGs should explore in the future: less moral ambiguity, not more.

One of Trump's Rhetorical Tactics Has a Name

And a long classical pedigree.

Praeteritio is the act of saying something by saying that you're not going to say it. Like, for instance, when Trump calls Rubio a lightweight by saying "I'm not going to call him a lightweight, because I think that's a derogatory term." It's a rhetorical device as old as political rhetoric itself, once proudly wielded by Cicero, who often "refused to mention" the various crimes committed by Catiline and his supporters.

As with Cicero, Trump uses praeteritio to insult his opponents while also suggesting he's the kind of guy who's above insulting his opponents. It's a neat trick.

#BlackLivesMatter Protesters Claim That a Campus Fundraiser for Kids With Cancer Was a Microaggression

So the Tri Delts at the University of Kansas were selling candy to raise money for children with cancer when a #BLM group, "Rock Chalk Invisible Hawk", started their protest. And - check this my brothers - those elitist microagressing bitchez declined to get right with the Revolution and just kept right on selling their dirty capitalist cancer candy canes while oppression stared them right in their selfish ignorant smiling little faces.

Apparently this tweet was supposed to be damning or something.

32,000 Year Old Seed Brings Plant Back to Life

A few years ago a date palm was grown from a 2000 year old seed found at Masada but this one is from an entirely different geologic epoch.

A Russian team discovered a seed cache of Silene stenophylla, a flowering plant native to Siberia, that had been buried by an Ice Age squirrel near the banks of the Kolyma River (map). Radiocarbon dating confirmed that the seeds were 32,000 years old.

The mature and immature seeds, which had been entirely encased in ice, were unearthed from 124 feet (38 meters) below the permafrost, surrounded by layers that included mammoth, bison, and woolly rhinoceros bones.

15 OK, before I even read the content, reposted from last night:

My regular shooting-buddy is thinking about becoming a citizen next year -- he's from an Anglosphere country, but he'd kind-of like to know how things work in the US. He understands the difference between the way things are designed to work and how they really do, so that's a start.

He caught me somewhat by surprise at an awkward time, and I could immediately think of nothing better than reading the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Neither one is that long or that obscure, and there can be no question that the Founders meant to say otherwise.

I have to confess to having "heard of" more than "read" the Federalist Papers, but have a sense that they might also be helpful -- as would a High School Civics textbook from the late 50's or early 60's.

87 So
according to National Climate Data Center (NCDC) department of NOAA, we're just about ready to return to a global ice age.

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/abrupt/data2.html

and if Siberia was warmer 32,000 years ago, enough for date palms to survive, then we're already in one of the downward steps toward increased glaciation. The problem of global warming is solved. It's getting colder.

Science proves it.

Good evening, good people.

For those who are under the influence of gloom and doom regarding our beloved land, let me say this to you.

Our bedrock is solid as ever.

That bedrock is threefold.

It is The Declaration of Independence--the WHY.

The Bill of Rights--that which is inalienable.

And the Constitution--the blueprint.

That triad has allowed us to flourish to the extent of becoming the most exceptional country AND people yet seen on the planet.

We face a challenge today that MUST be met,by each and every one of us who hold to the precepts we were founded on. It is our duty.

I believe without doubt we will prevail in this, because we are AMERICANS, and as such are denied the option of failure.

Thus you may NEVER quit.

1. Find a civics textbook printed before 1980 or so. Biographies of mid-century presidents also good.

2. Short of forcing him to read the Fed papers, start with the hillsdale college lectures on the constitution ( 101 and 102), fed papers, and the Presidency and the Constitution.

http://online.hillsdale.edu/dashboard/courses

3. Attend a local city council meeting a few times. Go and introduce oneself to the members. Talk to them before or after.

Follow ordinances as the wind their way through the body.

Likewise, if he/she lives near the state capitol, do the same, particularly introducing oneself and talking to the state reps.

132 This is what you get when the NYTimes doesn't get the memo that the Republican debate was about foreign policy ...

It was remarkable that the Republican presidential candidates' debate this week, supposedly focused on keeping Americans safe, was devoid of questions and comments about the public health issue of gun violence.

Instead, the nine Republican rivals spent much of their time dwelling darkly on potential threats from Islamic State terrorists. And when they brought up the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., this month, carried out by a couple found to be inspired by Islamic State violence, the discussion never veered to the easy gun access that enabled those killers -- and many others -- to commit swift and horrific slaughter of innocent people.

So of course I will be praying, and of course any prayers and good wishes the Horde can send along are also quite welcome. This is also a guy who is likely to be helping out a bit when it finally comes time to shoot the film I've been talking about, btw. Anyway, wanted to pass along the news.

Yeah, CaliGirl, that was the not-barking lost dog that just went and showed up on up on my doorstep. My Great Dane is very protective as she should be. The lost dog though was so sweet and docile and grateful. I wanted to keep her, but Great Dane. The two fought all day.

182 So, here's the bleg......what can I recommend to my friend to learn about the structure of American government, both in theory and in practice?

I thought the novel Advise & Consent did a pretty good job of explaining how the Senate works, in much the same way that Tom Clancy does a pretty good job of explaining how whatever technical thing he's currently writing about works, or Ian Fleming does a pretty good job of explaining how Baccarat or whatever card game he's currently exploiting works.

Bernard Bailyn's "To Begin the World Anew" was a pretty good and easy history read.

And I second just about anything by P.J. O'Rourke.

And Thomas Sowell's Vision of the Anointed to see how the left wants it to work. Or Throw Them All Out to see how the establishment wants it to work. If you want him to actually come over, you might leave those two until after he's committed...

Remember the friend I mentioned a few weeks back, who had to check into the hospital and basically just kick back and *wait* for a new heart to come in for his transplant? His name is Michael Belanger. Well anyway, his heart came in tonight and according to his FB feed, he went into surgery an hour ago.

So of course I will be praying, and of course any prayers and good wishes the Horde can send along are also quite welcome. This is also a guy who is likely to be helping out a bit when it finally comes time to shoot the film I've been talking about, btw. Anyway, wanted to pass along the news.

I don't think heart transplants are considered rare at this point, but I'm not sure they're considered routine yet either.

It runs under a totally lunar calendar. islamic dates travel throughout the year. Putting any intercalaries into the islamic calendar is a death penalty offense. No shit.

2) Reading about the culture (and its history) you're interested in. You don't have to go there to understand what they are about.

3) Reading newspapers from the area you are interested in.

Just to name a quick three.

The biggest problem is people not knowing what they are doing, so I get people who know what they're doing and I listen to them.

That's what we need, because there aren't a whole lot of smart people here. I'll find smart people. I've done it my entire career.

This guy gets it. The guy with the hat can't even wait. This guy knows. He's not jumping because he doesn't get it.

It's sad, really, the way other people don't get it.

This guy in that hat is a good guy. I know. I've worked with the best people all my life. He's a good guy, who also gets it. The guy in the hat.

the one that's already been caught will be hard to catch again. It's been suggested that sardines might overcome that to me. I haven't tested that. But the little warm house might work if you put it in the hay barn. My feral momma Lu sleeps in the hay, in my barn and flirts with moving into the tackroom with my elderly barn cat. Leave a bunch of shake around the hay and they sleep tuck into that. But I use grass hay so thats a pretty snuggly bed if you're a wild kitty.

Yeah, you have to live in another country to approach being fluent in an active language and more importantly, having at least a minimal insight into a culture.

There is no amount of scanning that can replace interaction with actual, real, live human beings (AoSHQ aside).

2 ) Reading about the culture (and its history) you're interested in. You don't have to go there to understand what they are about.

Again, it's a substitution. Not the thing of actual experience.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 17, 2015 11:22 PM (EzgxV)

You can sum the American governmental architecture up thusly (for theory):

The fundamental political entity is the individual. Parties do not exist in the Constitution. All positions in the federal government are individual positions filled by individuals.

The Executive branch of the federal government is permanent. It is not formed by the legislature and operates independently of the legislature, save the required checks and balances between them.

The legislature has no executive power.

All the three branches of the federal government are independent arms and operate under the constraints and responsibilities laid out in the Constitution.

have them read the Constitution to fill in the details.

That is all that's needed to explain the main (and important) differences between the American Constitutional architecture and the party-oriented parliamentary shit systems that just about every other nation in the world operates under.

357 One of the more counterintuitive bits about cooking steak is that the more rare you want the steak, the hotter you want to cook it. If you want it cooked all-the-way-through, you cook at a low temperature that won't scorch the surface before it penetrates all-the-way. If you want it rare inside, you have to scorch the surface quickly before the heat can penetrate into the middle.

369 Officials with the Democratic National Committee have accused the presidential campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders of improperly accessing confidential voter information gathered by the rival campaign of Hillary Clinton, according to several party officials.

Jeff Weaver, the Vermont senator's campaign manager, acknowledged that a low-level staffer had viewed the information but blamed a software vendor hired by the DNC for a glitch that allowed access. Weaver said one Sanders staffer was fired over the incident.

The discovery sparked alarm at the DNC, which promptly shut off the Sanders campaign's access to the strategically crucial list of likely Democratic voters.

495 The guy was mostly using his e-cello as a more portable electric upright bass, which it did very well.

I sat in for him with the other half of his duo, a guitarist/singer, for a couple of songs, and just improvised in the fly. We exchanged info afterward, because he said he might want to jam/get a few acoustic pointers.

It was a good move.

I'm "meh" with the NBA.

Went to the Kennedy Center last night and saw a performance of Handel's Messiah. It was amazing and the Kennedy Center is impressive. I've lived in DC since 97 and had never been there. Highly recommend visiting it if any of you decide to visit the Hive of Scum and Villainy that is DC.

Done in Norman Rockwell style, guy asleep on sofa, wearing wifebeater and spotted boxer shorts. A cigarette has fallen from his hand, and the sofa is smoldering. Cat is between his legs, reaching up to bat at his balls, which are dangling out the leg of the boxer shorts. It's really a hoot.

They did a good job recreating the feel of the original trilogy, several good spacecraft battle scenes, lightsaber duels, great scenery and characters. Some points were a little corny when the movie tries a little too hard, but I can give it a pass. Very good, not great like Empire Strikes Back, but the movie still felt right way more than the prequels could. 535 Fine, you want to get scientific? The melting point of steel is 1500C. The melting point of aluminum is approx 660C. Molten aluminum has an extremely aggressive reaction with water, causing it to burn at a temperature of 4100C when exposed to water. Jet fuel burns at 1030C in open air.

So.

Aluminum airplanes hit steel building, filling them with jet fuel and aluminum. Jet fuel causes aluminum to melt. Sprinkler system introduces lots of water to molten aluminum. Extremely violent reaction occurs, causing temperature spikes up to 4100C. Steel melts. Buildings fall.

Science. Eat it.

565 "Have you ever had a chance to head up to Garmisch in Bavaria?"

Don't fall off Zugspitz. The first step is doozy.

566 Aluminum airplanes hit steel building, filling them with jet fuel and aluminum. Jet fuel causes aluminum to melt. Sprinkler system introduces lots of water to molten aluminum. Extremely violent reaction occurs, causing temperature spikes up to 4100C. Steel melts. Buildings fall.

Science. Eat it.

I don't know who you're responding to but that's an interesting angle I've never heard before.

567 I had great expresso when I was in Italy

Posted by: Nevergiveup at December 18, 2015 06:41 AM

Years ago, I spent a week at a hotel in Milan. Great espresso. One morning a waiter in the restaurant found out I was from the U.S. and asked if I would like "American coffee" instead of the usual sludgy dark nectar. I thought; "why not?"

He poured a shot of espresso into a large cup and then filled it to the rim with hot water....

But they served the best prosciutto ever. Looked as if it had been cured on an asphalt parking lot, but delicious.

573 White House officials are pledging that President Obama will deliver a "non-traditional" State of the Union address in January, the last time he will deliver the annual speech as president.

He's going to dress is a grass skirt and a lei and play on a ukulele and sing out the problems we face. Too bad I don't have a photoshop for this

Really, we could all probably amuse ourselves in the early morning hours by instead of complaining what a lousy day it is, by instead- making on funny ways Obama could do a non traditional SOTU.

575 "I'd love to get assigned to Sigonella On Sicily one of these days"

Better hurry up, before Obama shuts it down and gives it to Cuba.

On second thought, we could transfer all the GITMO prisoners to Sicily, and pay the local Organized Crime industry to house feed and discipline them.

578 Morning fellow slackers and mouthbreathers! What's new and wonderful in the US today. I would like to report that the cured meats and beer here in Germany and northern Italy are superlative and that I am surely an espresso fiend now.

Other than that, fuck the JEF in particular and the democrats and the GOPe just as a general rule.
