About half of all delegates are assigned by winner-take-all states. The other half proportionally.

It would take a miracle for Trump to win ALL of the winner-take-all states.

Those guys were all actual, credible politicians. Trump is an entertainer and, well, Donald Trump. People expecting him to be an idiot is only a plus in terms of getting media coverage.

Unless he actually wins Iowa or NH, his campaign could easily dissolve as actual GOP voters show up. A lot of his support is just people saying "f u" to the pollsters and media.

Fun Fact: Under current GOPe convention rules, a candidate must have won at least 8 state contests before their name can be submitted to the convention for a final vote.

As it looks now, Trump cruises to at least 8, but Cruz, Rubio and TBD? Just not enough races left for more than one or mayyyybe two of them to get on the ballot with the Donald.

In fact, I would speculate that while the anti-Trump rhetoric is aimed mainly at voters, the potential delegates to the convention are the secondary (perhaps actual?) targets.

If Trump wins the plurality of the delegates but not the nomination, and the party decides somehow to nominate El Heb, I could see El Heb actually finishing 3rd in the general election.

By destroying the Republican party which has become actively antithetical to conservative principles. Cruz, as much as I like him, his a part of the party. He can't afford to tell the rest of the GOP to f*ck off. Trump pretty well specifically can.

And, yes, I'm admitting now that it would suck. Trump is not at all conservative on things that matter. He seems to think he's running for king, not for president. I have made my personal cost-benefit analysis, and I'm good with paying that cost to get the benefit of a destroyed Republican party so that Conservatives only have to run against 1 Liberal party.

203 Brokered Convention is almost guaranteed at this point. But doesn't matter because, thanks to this disaster, a President Hillary Clinton is now pretty much a sure thing, or as sure as it gets. Why Trump supporters don't see this is one of the Great Mysteries. They think that because they and their buddies support Trump, most people do. Who do they think voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012? Anyways, perhaps it is all a blessing disguise. Been spending way too much following and talking politics for the last 20 years. It would be a relief to check out and prepare for retirement.

208 Brokered convention is certainly the last hope for the desperate. I spent the 2008 primary season on the Ron Paul bandwagon, and that's pretty much all anyone talked about. "We can still win if we get to a brokered convention"

I don't know what they hope to achieve. Lets say Trump gets the delegates and they steal it from him at the convention, I don't think I can see any scenario where the eventual nominee is elected president. For all the bluster about Trump handing the white house to the Clinton's if he's nominated, this strategy seems like an even bigger give away.

Even if they let Trump have it if he wins, the defections to the Democrats that I think we can all imagine from the establishment types would make it a self-fulfilling prophesy.

More likely would be some swapping of delegates to get over the threshold and Cruz is the VP slot. But Cruz is too smart to end his Presidential ambitions that way and possibly lose a 40 state landslide.

A six-car commuter train with 50 passengers left a station without the operator on board. The train traveled through four other stations without stopping. This frightening incident happened in Braintree, Massachusetts.

It is being reported that the train was tampered with. "This train was tampered with, and it was tampered with by someone who knows what he was doing," Governor Charlie Baker said, according to the Boston Globe.

But polling is not supposed to mean a perfect prediction, just a really educated guess as to what the voters will do

541 Levin is on.

Posted by: Carol at December 10, 2015 06:12 PM (sj3Ax)

542 The Establishment can still influence whether there's a brokered convention.

The odds of this should be lower to the extent that primaries are winner take all. Florida for example was made winner take all when Jeb was expected to take it. Now all those delegates will likely got to Trump. But most of the early primaries are not winner take all. My understanding is that the decision on whether a primary is winner take all hasn't been made for a lot of the primaries in the second half of the calendar.

On current trajectory, if we have a lot of winner take all primaries, Trump wins on the first ballot with more than a majority of the delegates. If there are few winner takes all, then Trump might not.

An added complication is that there's a holdover rule from 2012 that requires a candidate to have won a majority of delegates in at least eight states to even have their name be put to that first vote. This rule was put in by the Establishment so that Ron Paul would get no air time at all.

Back in 2008, if states like PA had been winner take all Hillary would have been the nominee, not Obama.

It's fear, I think. The Clintons know where the bodies are buried. And aren't above burying a few of their own. Screech has been told that it's "HER TURN", and she's by damn not gonna let anything like scruples or truth or integrity stand in her way.

547 It's a mistake to think the people will turn to Cruz. Some here think he's "drafting" Trump like an Indy car. Problem is, the Trump car has at least one lap on him.

Jeb! is toast. Rubio is the GOPe fallback. He's Cuban Obama, and Trump can make mincemeat of him and his record.

Trump is taking a wrecking ball to the edifice of PC, and it's liberating for people to finally be able to talk about the things they've been forced to keep silent about since forever. They are not going to turn around and stab him in the back and vote for someone else who opposes their views.

548 "519 Trump may not realize this...but he is saving country. Trump just keep doing what you are doing. Don't ever change. He is exposing to every patriotic American that we are being ruled by Davos Men."

This. It is amazing to think the entire thing is an accident. Even if it is, Trump is a colossus who may have saved the republic--even if he didn't realize it. The first part was blowing up the Republican Party and exposing it as the corrupt cesspool it is. Box checked. The second was making the media his little bitches with their legs splayed. Box checked. The next will be destroying the Democratic establishment, which may be the easiest box checked.

It's an amazing time to be alive. The reckoning has begun.

560 Issues about a brokered convention is what Trump means when he says he wants to be treated fairly. If he's close to a majority of delegates and no one else is close, Trump may find that the delegates sent to the convention in his name are Establishment loyalists who will screw Trump over on a second ballot.

If Trump gets 40% of the primary vote and Cruz gets 20% but an Establishment convention picks Jeb it'll be the end of the Republican party as these voters will just stay home.

562 If Trump got pushed out unfairly, and still managed to run third party (whatever that takes), he might win, rather than handing it to Hillary.

For one thing, his base would be super motivated, and he'd use his celebrity appeal to get the 87% that disapprove of congress, to got out and vote.

For another thing, regular Republicans that felt the establishment had screwed them would turn our for Trump.

Point number C, Trump has crossover appeal, and he'd win some blacks and Hispanics that think Clinton is a treacherous lying witch.

And he'd have his billion dollars to play with, and maybe some donors.

I think the same "populism" that got Trump to this point, might do even better is he splits the vote three ways ... RINOs and Clintonites ... or Trump.

In the three way I guess I'd vote Cruz if they chose him, but otherwise Trump. Open borders is the end of conservative America.

567 Trump will win this in a walk. He is the type candidate that people vote for in secret. You actually think the Dems love Hillary? You think the Bern wing of the party might not turn out for her coronation? You think there's no chance for another jihadi attack before Election Day?

The middle class is no longer the majority in this country. Highest level of nonparticipation in the workforce since they started keeping records. Even LIV voters can't ignore that. And concern about Trump as commander in chief? I actually remember the Reagan years, when we had all that hand wringing over what that crazy cowboy would do next. When the world is spinning out of control, the last person you'd hand the nukes to is the incompetent that let four Americans die under her watch.

It will be more than leaked. Comey will give a post-retirement speech around July, and, oh my. Clinton cultists will be jumping out of buildings. This is why Obama so publicly summonsed Comey to the Oval Office under the pretext of disgust about his "Ferguson effect" remarks.

This is why I'm certain Hillary cannot win and the base has a free hand to bitch slap the GOPe to hell and back this time round and hang the lot of them afterwards.

And I know lots of people like me who "ain't votin' for Trump, no fucking way," including my entire extended family. If you've lost us, you can't win. Period. You only win if you consolidate the Right AND take a majority of independents AND make inroads with moderate Dems. Trump can't even consolidate the Right. I mean, the fact that Trump supporters are routinely denouncing Fox News (!!!) shows how off course they are.

Trump runs as an Independent and gets 8% of the vote. Hillary wins. Trump voters get blamed for the rest of their lives.

584 I've been discussing this with a fellow moron at work (who lurks more than I do), and this is what I think is going to happen next year:

By the time of the convention next year, no one will score the required number of delegates, and the negotiating begins. Trump, Cruz, Rubio, and maybe one or two others will be bunched together at the top. I think Trump will see that he can get only so far and no farther at this point, and will settle for being "kingmaker" rather than keep stumping for the nomination. The GOPe will line up behind Rubio or some lesser candidate, but with enough delegates, the decision will be Trump's to make. At some predetermined point, Trump will bargain with Cruz's camp, and one of them will throw his delegates to the other, and we will have either a Trump/Cruz or Cruz/Trump ticket.

I'm betting on the latter. Cruz gives Trump the legitimacy he needs, and Trump gives Cruz the populist (and perhaps financial) support he needs. It's a win-win situation.

Posted by: DynamiteDan at December 10, 2015 08:31 PM (BaDMP)

585 So the question (IF the box above the numbers is the actual question), says only "Do you support Trump's proposal to bar Muslims from entering the country." asked 1000 adults

Most that only have heard the outrage are gong to say no, some even if they agree since they don't want to sound racist/bigoted. And as vicious as people are getting, maybe it's not a pollster but a shooter looking for targets.

But they left out "temporarily, till we figure out how to vet them, since ISIS has promised to infiltrate the refugees", which is a pretty big part. And Trump has already said there would be exceptions.

The other poll that said 66% of Rs agree makes more sense, and many prominent people have come out in favor of the general concept, with more ideological and/or geographic terminology.

It is really the use of "all Muslims" that got the nuts screaming "bigot". But it forced open the discussion of the problem: "How do we divine which are the good ones, and which will stay good?" along with "Do we want to take the same route as Paris and London, with their openness and no go zones?"

586 darn it .. wrong thread sheesh

Posted by: Illiniwek at December 10, 2015 08:41 PM (26Yu7)

587 LOL

Lots of denial in these comments. Lots of Rubio/Bush/Kasich bots pushing the brokered convention angle. First of all, according to current polling, Trump could run the table and get more than enough states. Those upset about his "muslim comments" fail to see the possible greater flood of support coming his way. One or two more (likely) terror attacks may be all it takes to peel off more support. He's almost north of 40% in a 15-person field. Add Cruz as VP and Trump is in the high 50s or low 60s. Add in Carson's dwindling support to either and you see where this is headed.

A third party run is not ideal, but even then Trump would still have a shot. The GOP (Party of Lincoln) will have foolishly impaled itself with its sellouts to the CoC, and it's hard to see any establishment GOP candidate getting close to 15% in a general election. Trump could still possibly edge out Hillary, especially with the drip drip drip of her scandals and when he brands her like he has the GOP field. Plus, he is going to pull a lot of support from union members and African Americans.

And if Trump wins as a third party candidate, the Establishment GOP will be locked out of the process and its politicians die a slow political death. Trump will forge deals with conservative congressman and democrats. Political realignment.

Posted by: Bing Charlie at December 10, 2015 11:15 PM (kwHPo)

588 For you folks hoping and praying for Rubio, here's a wakeup call for you: it's not gonna happen. Establishment manuevering is all about Jeb Bush. He has campaign expenditures paid through the spring. He's not getting out. The brokered convention nonsense is all about installing Jeb Bush. Rubio is simply a vote splitter and place holder for Bush who will kneecap him with ads or with an info leak at the right time.

Support for Rubio is support for Bush, whether you like it or not.
