If the primaries don't result in a nominee, the convention has a set of rules for a series of votes for deciding the impasse. If that doesn't work the delegates are free to vote anyway they wish, and the Chamber of Commerce pays everyone off, and Jeb emerges as a "reluctant nominee".

Fun Fact: Under current GOPe convention rules, a candidate must have won at least 8 state contests before their name can be submitted to the convention for a final vote.
As it looks now, Trump cruises to at least 8, but Cruz, Rubio and TBD? Just not enough races left for more than one or mayyyybe two of them to get on the ballot with the Donald.

Remember that for every Political Insider who loathes Trump, who finds him boorish or Not One Of Us, there are a bunch of plain old ordinary Americans who are liking him because he expresses their feelings.

Cruz is a very viable candidate who I think is going to take Iowa and is well positioned to take the southern primaries. Voting for Trump if you are a conservative seems like wasted vote.

By destroying the Republican party which has become actively antithetical to conservative principles. Cruz, as much as I like him, his a part of the party. He can't afford to tell the rest of the GOP to f*ck off. Trump pretty well specifically can.
And, yes, I'm admitting now that it would suck. Trump is not at all conservative on things that matter. He seems to think he's running for king, not for president. I have made my personal cost-benefit analysis, and I'm good with paying that cost to get the benefit of a destroyed Republican party so that Conservatives only have to run against 1 Liberal party.

I don't know what they hope to achieve. Lets say Trump gets the delegates and they steal it from him at the convention, I don't think I can see any scenario where the eventual nominee is elected president. For all the bluster about Trump handing the white house to the Clinton's if he's nominated, this strategy seems like an even bigger give away.
Even if they let Trump have it if he wins, the defections to the Democrats that I think we can all imagine from the establishment types would make it a self-fulfilling prophesy.

I don't see any way out of this predicament, if Trump gets the nom, he'll lose, people aren't going to give a man like that the power to engage in a nuclear showdown. If Trump loses the nom, he'll do everything in his power to take out the eventual Republican and hand it to Hillary.

This is the way I see it as well. If they hook up early with Cruz as the VP going into the Southern Primaries, assuming Trump can pull off a win in Iowa and NH, it's over. The only risk I can see is that Cruz is so unlikable to democrats it would jeopardize the cross over vote from traditional democrat voters. I have no polling data to back this up, but I see Trump having locked the blue collar white democrat vote up if he's the nominee. No way Hillary gets those votes over him.

It was looking very likely Romney was going to have to put Santorum on the ticket in order to get past the finish line until Santorum left.
If Trump gets the most primary votes, he'll be at the top of the ticket. Anything less and there would be a much bigger wipeout with the party splitting up.

That's just it, people hear this and think it means Trump goes in to the Convention with the most votes and then Jeb gets handed the nomination instead.
More likely would be some swapping of delegates to get over the threshold and Cruz is the VP slot. But Cruz is too smart to end his Presidential ambitions that way and possibly lose a 40 state landslide.

A new poll suggests that a plurality of Americans favor a temporary ban on Muslim immigration like the one proposed by Republican front-runner Donald Trump.
The survey by conservative-leaning Rasmussen Reports found that 46 percent of likely voters would favor a policy preventing Muslim immigrants from entering the country until tighter screening procedures can be implemented, while 40 percent would oppose such a measure.

Many of these states came down to 2-3 points, so 49 out of 50 states correctly called is close to perfection in my opinion.

The odds of this should be lower to the extent that primaries are winner take all. Florida for example was made winner take all when Jeb was expected to take it. Now all those delegates will likely got to Trump. But most of the early primaries are not winner take all. My understanding is that the decision on whether a primary is winner take all hasn't been made for a lot of the primaries in the second half of the calendar.
On current trajectory, if we have a lot of winner take all primaries, Trump wins on the first ballot with more than a majority of the delegates. If there are few winner takes all, then Trump might not.
An added complication is that there's a holdover rule from 2012 that requires a candidate to have won a majority of delegates in at least eight states to even have their name be put to that first vote. This rule was put in by the Establishment so that Ron Paul would get no air time at all.
Back in 2008, if states like PA had been winner take all Hillary would have been the nominee, not Obama.

This. It is amazing to think the entire thing is an accident. Even if it is, Trump is a colossus who may have saved the republic--even if he didn't realize it. The first part was blowing up the Republican Party and exposing it as the corrupt cesspool it is. Box checked. The second was making the media his little bitches with their legs splayed. Box checked. The next will be destroying the Democratic establishment, which may be the easiest box checked.
It's an amazing time to be alive. The reckoning has begun.

For one thing, his base would be super motivated, and he'd use his celebrity appeal to get the 87% that disapprove of congress, to got out and vote.
For another thing, regular Republicans that felt the establishment had screwed them would turn our for Trump.
Point number C, Trump has crossover appeal, and he'd win some blacks and Hispanics that think Clinton is a treacherous lying witch.
And he'd have his billion dollars to play with, and maybe some donors.
I think the same "populism" that got Trump to this point, might do even better is he splits the vote three ways ... RINOs and Clintonites ... or Trump.
In the three way I guess I'd vote Cruz if they chose him, but otherwise Trump. Open borders is the end of conservative America.

By the time of the convention next year, no one will score the required number of delegates, and the negotiating begins. Trump, Cruz, Rubio, and maybe one or two others will be bunched together at the top. I think Trump will see that he can get only so far and no farther at this point, and will settle for being "kingmaker" rather than keep stumping for the nomination. The GOPe will line up behind Rubio or some lesser candidate, but with enough delegates, the decision will be Trump's to make. At some predetermined point, Trump will bargain with Cruz's camp, and one of them will throw his delegates to the other, and we will have either a Trump/Cruz or Cruz/Trump ticket.
I'm betting on the latter. Cruz gives Trump the legitimacy he needs, and Trump gives Cruz the populist (and perhaps financial) support he needs. It's a win-win situation.

Most that only have heard the outrage are gong to say no, some even if they agree since they don't want to sound racist/bigoted. And as vicious as people are getting, maybe it's not a pollster but a shooter looking for targets.
But they left out "temporarily, till we figure out how to vet them, since ISIS has promised to infiltrate the refugees", which is a pretty big part. And Trump has already said there would be exceptions.
The other poll that said 66% of Rs agree makes more sense, and many prominent people have come out in favor of the general concept, with more ideological and/or geographic terminology.
It is really the use of "all Muslims" that got the nuts screaming "bigot". But it forced open the discussion of the problem: "How do we divine which are the good ones, and which will stay good?" along with "Do we want to take the same route as Paris and London, with their openness and no go zones?"

Lots of denial in these comments. Lots of Rubio/Bush/Kasich bots pushing the brokered convention angle. First of all, according to current polling, Trump could run the table and get more than enough states. Those upset about his "muslim comments" fail to see the possible greater flood of support coming his way. One or two more (likely) terror attacks may be all it takes to peel off more support. He's almost north of 40% in a 15-person field. Add Cruz as VP and Trump is in the high 50s or low 60s. Add in Carson's dwindling support to either and you see where this is headed.
A third party run is not ideal, but even then Trump would still have a shot. The GOP (Party of Lincoln) will have foolishly impaled itself with its sellouts to the CoC, and it's hard to see any establishment GOP candidate getting close to 15% in a general election. Trump could still possibly edge out Hillary, especially with the drip drip drip of her scandals and when he brands her like he has the GOP field. Plus, he is going to pull a lot of support from union members and African Americans.
And if Trump wins as a third party candidate, the Establishment GOP will be locked out of the process and its politicians die a slow political death. Trump will forge deals with conservative congressman and democrats. Political realignment.
