BTW, I missed Kirk Douglas' birthday yesterday; Spartacus is 99 years old. He's made a lot of good movies over the years, but my favorite is 1953s The Bad and the Beautiful starring Douglas as a ruthless movie producer and the luscious Lana Turner as the alcoholic daughter of a silent star whom he turns into a star. It's entertaining on its own, but for those in the know, it does have a subtle allusion to Turner's habit of pulling any hunky co-star or set hand into her dressing room for a bit of horizontal fun.

Been following the coverage of that case on Legal Insurrection. What a joke. The state's own medical witness agrees the death might have been an accident. Vincent Di Maio, the defense expert forensic pathologist, says it was an accident, and most likely happened because Gray stood up, or attempted to stand, and then the vehicle accelerated or turned when Gray's neck was flexed, knocking Gray's head into the van wall and causing the damage to his spine. (Since Gray's hands and feet where shackled, when he attempted to stand he didn't have the ability to brace himself against a fall when the van moved).
The best the state can argue is that the cops failed to seatbelt Gray. But none of the cops in Baltimore used seatbelts on suspects they were transporting, and the e-mail telling them to start doing it only went out a few days before Gray's death, and there is no evidence the cops in this case even saw the e-mail. But that is what the state is now basing charges of homicide on. It's a travesty. This is nothing but a political prosecution to satisfy the baying mobs.

Another place where we conservatives screwed up. The left has been stalking academia and law schools for decades sowing the seeds of destruction on rather fertile grounds. They soon figured out that the appointment of judges was a weak point in our form of government in that many of them get lifetime (or at least very long) tenure and thus their rulings are only loosely coupled with the public sentiment so they can shape the legal landscape for years beyond their terms of office.

Please tell me that the charges are going to be for actual terror related things, not for the straw buys. Because as far as I can tell, he didn't violate Fed law in giving those ARs to the Berdoo shooters (they were not prohibited persons, hell they bought the pistols themselves).

What it says is there are a lot of angry people who sit on their couch. That's the other benefit of the "burn it down" plan - it gets people energized (yes, much like a mob would, I'm not denying that). Then - an object in motion tending to stay in motion - it's easier to *keep* them engaged, to redirect that energy, than it is to get them started in the first place.
As long as they think, "Oh, nothing's ever going to change, they're all the same," you'll never get those voters. But if they think, "What? I can lodge an 'F You!' and it'll be heard?" Well, then you can get them off the couch. Once they're off the couch, it's much easier (which is not to say "easy") to redirect them toward positive (or at least "pro-active") goals.

Unfortunately we lost Walker too soon who I think may well have been the most conservative candidate with the best chance in the general.
But with that said, the only thing wrong with Trump's proposal (which was more an off the cuff comment than a policy announcement is that he didn't use the word "countries"). For example if he had said (or clarified) that we should stop immigration from all countries with an identified, high incidence of terrorists until we can get a handle, etc. I think it would be harder to demonize him and would be more persuasive to those in the diminishing "center."

I read them both in the last few years. I had resented reading Huck Finn in high school because why were they making me read a children's book?
In short, I was an idiot.
Huck Finn is brilliant and far too sophisticated for high school students. I really relished reading it. During my Twain binge (I also read Connecticut Yankee, much of the short fiction, and ...um...that other one. But OMG have you read Letters from Satan?) I came to view him as essentially libertarian.
He is anti-aristocracy, anti-royalty, anti-prejudice, and has a generalized distrust of all authority. In CT Yankee he even breaks the fourth wall at one point and says "this is how I'd run a country".
Tom Sawyer, otoh, is one hard bitch.

My issue with Walker wading into that isn't that he gave some simple statement to some reporter bothering him at the state house over it, it's that he went out of his way to issue it, and in addition went out of his way to call for candidates to exit the race so that another candidate could be 'taken out'. Christi fits well in NJ, Walker fits well in WI, neither should be in higher office.

Yup. Though I suggest running with JS off by default (or NoScript on by default) everywhere, only selectively enabling it via NoScript for the root domain you're trying to access. If a site requires scripts hosted beyond the base domain name or a well known cdn to function... then fuck that site I don't need it. And to those sites out there that want 44 scripts to run just to load a home page or an article... I say go f yourself. /mini rant over.

Heck, just adding the AdBlock Plus add-on does that for me. I got too lazy to toggle the JS. All that shite that even your normal, non-crashing ads load takes a bunch of time. Not sure how well it works on platforms other than IE, FF, and Android though. Wouldn't surf without it.
