American Intelligence Doing Poorly in Cold War II
One interesting tidbit from the article is that spies are more and more carrying guns during their operations.
After the War on Terrorism began, the Cold War rules began to rapidly disappear. For one thing, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq, along with most places that CIA officers operate today, are actual war zones with nothing "cold" about them. During traditional peacetime case officers don't really have to worry about their own safety, just that of their informants. Once you get involved with terrorists or an actual shooting war starts, all of that changes, and intelligence officers (whether CIA or Army Intelligence) become major high-value targets for terrorist and insurgents. Since 2001, over a dozen (the exact number is classified) CIA officers have been killed in the line of duty. In short, the espionage business has gotten far more dangerous in a very short period of time.This has necessitated a number of dramatic changes in the way the Americans, British, and other professional intelligence services do business where they are needed most (in war zones). For one, the spooks are getting strapped. Case officers working in places like Pakistan, Afghanistan, and even Egypt routinely carry handguns everywhere they go to defend themselves should the need arise. During the Cold War this was unnecessary and generally considered a stupid liability since being caught with a weapon would probably get you booted out of the country you operated in. Not anymore.
Besides carrying guns, agencies and case officers are paying extra attention to things like counter-surveillance, disguises, and evasive driving. Carrying a sidearm is necessary for a case officer working in a city like Karachi or Kabul, the truth remains that getting into a gunfight is still the last resort and should be avoided at all costs. Case officers know that the most effective way to avoided being a terrorist target is to avoid following the same routines every day, varying routes to and from work/meetings, never sleeping in the same safe house for too long, and generally making one's life as varied and unpredictable as possible.

When Nazi guards demanded all Jewish prisoners report the following morning, in a move reminiscent of the movie Spartacus, Edmonds instructed all soldier inmates in the camp to show up alongside their Jewish comrades.When camp commandant Major Siegmann saw the entire American contingent standing and identifying as Jews he exclaimed, "they cannot all be Jews," and Edmonds replied, "we are all Jews."
Siegmann then drew his pistol on Edmonds, who coolly responded that "according to the Geneva Convention, we only have to give our name, rank and serial number. If you shoot me, you will have to shoot all of us, and after the war you will be tried for war crimes."
Outfaced by Edmonds, the commandant turned and walked away.
The Germans backed down and eventually treated the Jewish POWs the same as other American POWs. Roddie Edmonds died in 1985. Last week he was posthumously recognized as Righteous Among the Nations.

The rule has already been encoded. POTUS can already bar any 'class' for whatever reason for however long. Good luck overriding that with new legislation subject to veto.
Who cares what they call their 'religion', it is a cultural issue.

Thanks for the cheap flashlight review, will check. I also have stashed cheapo but fairly good flashlights (LED) around the house (AAA battery kind). Have a few serious/better ones (SureFire, Streamlight) as well.
Funny, I have used almost verbatim that line about buying a 48-roll bulk pack of t.p. at Costco when gunsplaining ammo purchases. Actually that understates the logic of it all. Nobody uses up t.p. at a rate that a competitive or training or gung-ho recreational shooter uses up ammo (depending on the firearm in question).
Also, as to variety/number of firearms in one's "arsenal" - how many clubs in a golf bag? Heard that one somewhere and it's perfect (well, except that so many people are so clueless about so much on the planet that they lack even the background to get *that* analogy).

Looks like it is designed to deflect incoming rounds. Small apertures for windows. Probably has cameras all the boat and consoles galore inside. The hull design is borrowed from u boats. I saw a russian yacht once designed like that with a hull shaped in the opposite contour of normal boats. That vessel could launch and retrieve mini subs from the stern.

Lean toward the former. I've never been to a major big box sporting goods store that was proud of their stock. I've found them high, sometimes laughably, on just about everything when compared to Cabela's or Bass Pro.
Went one time. Haven't been back.

And one of the Carolinas -- I forget which -- requires you to display your weapon if driving with it. The other requires you to conceal it.

I never used to be this way. I grew up racing one design sailboats and fishing on traditional New England boats. Hell, my boat is pretty New England-y.
But I've come to appreciate purpose built boats. And that is one purpose built boat. I bet it would be fun as hell to ride in one open ocean doing 30 knots on that thing.

I think about this a lot because, generalized anxiety disorder + 5 children= me constantly thinking how to save everyone in the event of any imaginable catastrophe.
Annnnyway. My newest plan is in the even that there is a "lock down" type situation with an active shooter inside a building. I saw a thing with a guy using his belt to keep the door from opening (does that work?) and so I figured we get someone to do that and then break the window and escape out that way rather than cower in place. It seems to me being outside the building would be far better than being inside, but who knows.
Shopping centers would be more difficult. I would say run to back of the store and out the loading dock if possible at the first sign of trouble.
All of this depends on not being face to face with a bad guy, obviously. If I were face to face with the bad guy with my kids I'd mace him and tell the kids to run and probably get shot.

I think the Navy standardized on a particular light petroleum grade for all ships, whether gas fired or burners (boiled steam for propulsion). Back in the '80's, when the Iowa-class battleships were put back on duty, they had to convert to burners to use the standard petroleum fuel, which was different than what they were built to burn back in the '40's.

My grandfather of blessed memory ended up, through a series of zany coincidences, in the Philippines at the start of WWII.....
He and a lot of his men evacuated and he - a meek, frail little fellow, by Marine standards; a typist, he was - ended up assigned to an amphibious assault force not long after.
He was terrified on his first operation - he pissed and shat himself, threw up, shook with fear as they approached the beach.
He said he had a moment of clarity as he hit the water and damned near drowned on his way to the shore.
"I'm going to die. These bastards are trying to kill me, and they will succeed," he concluded.
He said a feeling of such peace came over him just then that he was able to fight his way ashore. From his letters, and commendations, I learned he was something of a berserker in battle.
The thing is, you never know how you'll react until you have to.

That particular GM until recently was called Gun World, and the whole store was devoted to firearms and related miscellanea.
And I agree with others who've said GM isn't a good value. Their mission is to separate you from as much of your cash per item as they can. Especially re firearms and ammo.

Another thing, remember Rick Rescorla's story. On 9/11 after the first plane hit, the Port Authority came over the South Tower PA and told people to stay at their desks. Rescorla knew that was bullshit, so he had all his 2600+ charges from Morgan Stanley start walking down the stairs.
Almost all of them survived. The ones who obeyed the Port Authority mostly died.

Of course, our classrooms had glass windows in the doors and we all, all, all thought it was total BS.

it's an older pup, I already have a good dog he could hang with, and have lots of experience with the breed. also a great breed (chow) as far as housebreaking and being generally pretty quiet. This is going to be racist as all get-out, to the wrong people....but I hope the right people appreciate it. I am generally more relaxed around blacks in North Carolina (where there are about 21.5% of the population) than in California (where they are about 6%). As far as I can see, this results from a confluence of factors: (1) Less urbanization, more ubiquitization in NC; (2) people are just nicer in NC; (3) people have had generations to "get used to" each other in NC; and (4) both blacks and whites in NC understand that it's the fuckin' Irish that you have to watch out for.

My house is that "open concept" crap that all the designers just love. I don't just love it, but I liked the other aspects so I accepted it.
Anyway, the problem is painting the walls. If I paint the kitchen I have to also paint the living room and the foyer the same color. The problem is that the foyer is 2 stories tall and will be a PITA to paint. A secondary problem is how to do the crown molding. The living room hits the foyer at a window and then the ceiling shoots up. There seems to be no good way to finish that area without it looking weird.
Any suggestions?

Haha well our plan now is to extend a half wall/ledge thing to a full wall between the kitchen and living room and maybe build an archway between the foyer and living room.
But...our carpentry skills aren't exactly top notch so this seems daunting. True story though, my husband's parents once bought a house with a bathroom so horrible that they actually walled it off for several years until they could completely renovate it. My poor husband still has nightmares about that.

Yeah, it COULD be done, I guess... but, getting to the U-boat is an extreme longshot. Even with a FW Condor, Spain is fucking long way through hostile skies. A night flight would have to be only way and even that reduces the risk only marginally. I'd be looking at a coastal pocket to the north... much, much shorter, but comes with another bunch of problems. A Condor's got range, but it's a sitting duck. Maybe something more specialized, speed and evasion wise, with a north route due to lack of range of said aircraft.

I painted the kitchen area white, and the rest of the public areas two colors of green. The walls that have windows got the dark shade and the inside walls got the lighter shade.
You could also designate on "accent" wall instead, with a striking color and make the others more bland.
My crown molding is white to tie it all together.
I was told to find the fruit that I liked the best and use those colors, from stem to blossom end, inside and out, as my palette.
Unfortunately I like Guavas best, and I was reluctant to put that almost-surgical-appliance pink on anything I own.

Something you may consider, if you carry--for a few years now, I've worn clothing--coats and the like-- with snaps rather than buttons.
You need to unholster quickly, opening the coat is much faster than coping with zippers or buttons.

My house is that "open concept" crap that all the designers just love. I don't just love it, but I liked the other aspects so I accepted it.
Anyway, the problem is painting the walls. If I paint the kitchen I have to also paint the living room and the foyer the same color. The problem is that the foyer is 2 stories tall and will be a PITA to paint. A secondary problem is how to do the crown molding. The living room hits the foyer at a window and then the ceiling shoots up. There seems to be no good way to finish that area without it looking weird.
Any suggestions?

If you do it at a change of theme, you can ram crown molding right into a wall. Same with baseboard. We redid our kitchen in 2004 and it involves very unsubtle ash crown-molding. When it gets to the dining-room it rams right straight into the wall and doesn't appear on the other side -- sends a signal that "this is the kitchen and this is the dining room" without interrupting the flow. Similarly, we have oak baseboard that runs from the living room, around the corner into the dining room, around the corner into the kitchen -- and whaps right into the side of the ash refrigerator cabinet. "You have entered the kitchen."

Political Hat, here's the thing about that case (or any other, almost). Well, two things.
Thing one. We have a situation that, of course, was never anticipated, and has never been the case, in any constitutional republic with at least pro forma adherence to rule of law, that the number of human beans physically present in any potential district who are there *illegally* in terms of immigration status can actually be material to how the numbers add up and the lines are drawn.
Thing two. Though on minor things, SCOTUS can still act in some normal and defensible fashion, on *any* matter where there is an outcome of import to the dominant, dumbed down, mostly alien, arrogant, utterly un-constitutional "elites" now running/shaping society, it is strictly a matter of voting, not reasoning or judging (hat tip Andrew McCarthy) for the Fascist Four.
So. I dunno. It literally almost comes down now to whether Roberts - for political reasons, or Kennedy - for increasingly idiosyncratic but always non-substantive reasons - goes against the Fascist Four.
A few days ago, a friend was mildly boasting about how in SCOTUS orals on some fairly technicalcase recently, of all the briefs submitted, only his wife's was specifically cited by a justice (Kennedy) in the discussion. Sigh. Of course I didn't point out that a randomly chosen guy leaving the corner bar at closing time is likely to have as much judicial gravitas as Kennedy any more.

I woke up this morning to the rather startling realization I'm flying to Africa in exactly one month today. The time of departure is coming rather suddenly now.
Feeling slight stress over the fact I will be expected to preach somewhere between six and 10 messages. Now I do preach from time to time but apparently in Africa sermons can last up to 2 1/2 hours (with interpreter). Now that's a lot of material to prepare--or to wing. And all without a teleprompter.

That's a good question. He has the oddest coloration I've ever seen. His fur looks black unless it catches the light and then you can see that it it's really brown...except for a black stripe down his back.

They look like miniature regular flashlights but with a very bright led bulb and two aa batteries.
They should last a long time and they're small enough (5.5") that they're very handy and I keep buying them and putting them all over so I'm never far from a flashlight.
The main thing is they're so cheap and so simple so they haven't failed for me yet. Too many small flashlights suffer from over designed switches that I've found fail after a few uses. After years of having they happened, I'd given up finding a small flashlight that worked.
This thing has a simple slide switch no push button or water barrier. (I don't know how water resistant these things are but who cares they're only a buck and a half)

Bay-area morons can fill in the proper details, but in recent years there was an incident in the Bay where Oakland (Berkeley?) firefighters watched from shore, per "policy", while some guy was drowning in their sight in fairly shallow water. I think one said "eff it" and went in and rescued the guy.
Again, details lost to memory. But a pretty appalling - and even worse, hardly surprising or unusual - example of what has happened to much of even the most admirable "public" service elements in this sad degraded country.

No it's not snobbery. It's just a matter of personal taste. The smaller manufacturers often use fresh ginger so you get better flavor. They also tend to be stronger flavored.

More details from wikipedia on why Erwin received the MOH:
Erwin pulled the pin and released a bomb into the chute, but the fuse malfunctioned and ignited the phosphorus prematurely, burning at 1,100 degrees. In the few seconds it took to raise the table, the phosphorus burned through his flesh to the bone. His body on fire, he stumbled into the cockpit, threw the bomb out the window and collapsed between the pilot's seats.[2]
The smoke cleared enough for Simeral to pull the B-29 out of a dive at 300 feet (91 m) above the water and turn toward Iwo Jima, where Erwin could be given emergency treatment. His crew members extinguished his burning clothes and administered first aid, but whenever Erwin's burns were uncovered, phosphorus embedded in his skin would begin to smolder. Although in excruciating pain, he remained conscious throughout the flight and spoke only to inquire about the safety of the crew. Once at Iwo Jima, medical personnel didn't believe he would survive

Haha, we've decided we're going to breed him and call them Waylon dogs.
He really is an odd looking mutt though. He mostly looks like a lab in the face, but he definitely has some hound going on too (rescue's guess mom was a plott hound/ cattle dog mix and daddy was a lab) and the cattle dog gives him some colored splotches. Then there's the odd black ridge and seal fur and we've got super mutt. Plus, don't tell our insurance company, but I'm guessing there's some pitt in there somewhere because he's a rescue and all rescues seem to have a bit of pitt.

I saw the Amazon Kindle HD 10.1" 16GB for $229 on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Tonight while looking at an article on Yahoo there was an ad for the same thing. I clicked on it and they want $179. Thinking about it. My current one is smaller.
Also, 500 rounds in two hours? I can go through that in an hour with 9mm plus a couple hundred rounds of .22. They're right, 2500 rounds is nothing. Plus I was led to believe that the 2500 rounds was forboth the .223 and the pistols they had.

In Berkeley, in the 70s, there was a guy we called "The Face." He'd been horribly disfigured by a fire; his face was basically a slab of meat in which surgeons had cut holes for his eyes, nose, and mouth. It was horrifying.
Once, going to visit a friend in the Hotel Durant, walking down a poorly lit corridor I turned a corner and bumped into him. I literally recoiled with shock. It was horror movie sort of stuff.
I felt bad about it instants later, on reflection, but my reaction at the time was reflexive. The man was probably a war hero, a wounded veteran, and his life had been destroyed by his service. I felt so sorry for him, and such respect for the sacrifice he'd made for our country.
God save him and belatedly protect him, if he's still alive now.

qdp, read Six Days of War by Israel's recent amb. to the US (Oren). That's the most recent. Must be several other good ones that are older. In short: surprise attack, pre-emption. Best way to fight an air war - with the other side on the ground.
Small anecdote from '67. Syria's defense min. (? well, that or close to that, seriously) was an ISRAELI agent. Yep. Anyway, one thing he did prior to the war was helpfully suggest that Syrian strongpoints up on the Golan Heights have the benefit of shade trees (eucalyptus) for the troops (the Golan is pretty barren). So - their strongpoints/fortifications were easy to spot/neutralize when the Israelis stormed the Heights. You can still see these places, the trees are quite large now of course. Still had "Mines!" and barbed wire around these areas last time I was there.
And finally - AllahPundit, back when he had his own blog just after 9/11, used to have a CafePress series of items (I want the coffee mug) with "Six Days, Bitch" on them. "Commemorating", as it were, the Six Day War, if rather indelicately, for our current partners in the Arab world.

Honestly, it's prob been close to 20 years. I loved working on those boats. Everything was very simple and right there. Perfect for mid teens kid to disassemble and reassemble and learn how shit works.
Plus, depending on the class boat you were racing, they went really really fucking fast.

I can confirm that this did in fact happen.
If memory serves, they were waiting for the Official Regional Interagency Specialized Highly Trained Water Casualty Rescue Unit from some county department to show up with an Official Water Casualty Rescue Boat, despite the water being slightly more than knee depth.
The most awesome public safety fuckup around here still has to be when Sum Ting Wong and Wi Tu Low flew their perfectly good Boeing 777 into the seawall at one of the SFO runways, and then while one of the injured passengers was lying on the grass outside the ruptured fuselage, one of the first responders ran over her with a foam truck, crushing her to death.
This after someone flagged down the arriving incident commander and clearly said, "There are injured passengers lying around, be careful," and pointed to the location.

Cochran, HKS speedloaders. Haven't checked but they must have them for the 642, as they still make them for long out-of-production Colts. I prefer HKS (twist release) to the pressure-release of Safarilands.

Hmmm. Check of the HKS website does not produce a speedloader for the 642 - though that seems impossible.
Esp. since a quick web search turns up a few discussions of problems with HKS speedloaders and 642s (grips or other items can make certain speedloaders not "fit" a revolver).
BCochran if nobody comes up with the answer here you can contact either S ampersand W or HKS for the answer, and I suggest cruising the online forums (S W has one, others to search would be The High Road or your best FL forum).

Remember when a channel knob would get old and start to slip thus making changing the channel impossible. The only immediate solution was to remove the knob and use a pair of pliers to grab the stem of the changer and turn so the channel changed. The good old days.

Regarding LED flashlights. Yesterday, I bought two 12-LED headlamps with elastic harnesses, on sale at Princess Auto for $3.33 each CDN. (that's about $2 USD at the current rate of exchange, welp) They use 3 AAA batteries, not included. Bought batteries, too. Lights have 4 modes, low, medium, high, and strobe. But they work fine, although I have not used one in action, yet. I may buy a few more for Christmas gifts. They seem fairly substantial for a plastic-cased gadget.

Was it in color? That was the debate; the color was so shitty and washed out it wasn't immediately obvious that it WAS color.

In retrospect (I was just a kid at the time), I think the owners had screwed up the color adjustment on their set. But my impression was that the picture was essentially kind of purple and white, and instead of black and white, and so I was underwhelmed.

I got my mutt for my 10th birthday. My Mom set the rules, like no dogs on the furniture, but I trained Trixie. She was a sweet mutt who took to training quickly. She knew not to jump on the couch. But when we went out and came home, we could here the 'thump' of her jumping off the couch. She knew she shouldn't be on the couch, but I couldn't get angry or correct her because she didn't get caught.
The other thing about her was that for a long time, I though they had experimented on her because she did not bark. One time shortly after she arrived, I was feeding her and asked her to 'speak'. She barked once and I was stunned. I learned over time that she didn't like to waste time barking. When she barked, usually once, you paid attention. Sometimes it was the water bowl was empty, sometimes she had to go outside, and sometimes someone was walking in front of the house.
We had such trust in each other that I never had to have her on a leash except in very rare instances. She was friendly and would scam belly rubs from anybody. But when I said, 'Trixie, come here girl', she did, without delay, every time.
Kids can sometimes make better trainers than adults because they don't get so easily frustrated and angry at the dog. Plus, 'dog time' is much easier for kids than adults when it comes to training.

Flatscreens are wildly safer than CRTs. A CRT is essentially an X-ray tube with a metal screen and phosphors inside. Hopefully, all the glowing is caught by the color dots, but if it misses, there's a thin spot, it's on too long, it's misaligned, or anything else -- you get an X-ray. An LCD flatscreen has fluorescent lighting behind it -- same kind as in the ceilings -- and filters for the pixels. An LED flatscreen has an LED field behind it.

Remotes existed, but only on high-end sets. Some of them were ultrasonic. TV had a microphone and amplifier that could distinguish between 3 ultrasonic tones, and close relays to effect a channel change or volume change, done by little electric motors that moved the same physical knobs used by people. The remote itself was a little plastic box with three metal bars, and keys that caused them to be struck by hammers, the bars being chimes tuned to the three ultrasonic tones. Press a key, and all you heard was "tunk". But the TV heard 42,400 kHz, or whatever.

We both won. She got a home and I got a life experience. The stories I could tell, like the time my Mom took my Patrol camping one weekend and Trixie came along, having free rein the entire weekend and never getting into trouble. She was always up for an adventure. Funny thing was, she hated the water, oceans, rivers, baths, you name it. But she love submarining through deep snow (and since Trixie was barely two feet high, any snow was deep to her).
To this day, I don't think my extended family ever appreciated how polite and quiet she was. She wouldn't go into a house and start jumping on the furniture. She'd come in, sniff and say 'Hi!', maybe by jumping on one's leg, get a head scratch. Then she'd find a comfortable place to lay and be a part of the room/group. She liked being around her pack and soaked it in, never causing a ruckus. She even won over my Mom's Mom, who had cats on the farm who were not pets, and whose dog was never allowed into the house. Trixie broke that rule all by her lonesome, walking in with us on her first trip there. Grandma was like, 'Uh, . . . ' I told Grandma Trixie was a house dog, eventually winning over Grandma, showing what a sweetie Trixie was.
One time, when the grandkid rugrats were visiting, there was a growl and a nip (the only time it ever happened), then a child screaming/crying 'Trixie bit me!' The first words out of everybody's mouths toward the two-year-old was 'What did you do to the dog?'

Well, thanks. I'll have to see if I can find the recipe (or write it down again). Funny how homemade Chinese isn't difficult to make and sure tastes a heck of a lot better. Plus you get more leftovers.
My favorite Chinese dish I created from a Chinese takeout place is Chicken with Peanuts. Pieces of chicken breast rolled in seasoned flour (with a little cornstarch added), left on a rack for about 15 minutes to get tacky, then dipped in the flour again before shallow frying. Drain while making the rest of the dish, including diced carrots, fresh shelled peanuts, sliced celery and whole water chestnuts cut into quarters. A sauce of soy/teri yaki/whatever floats your boat. So much better than the take out version, with plenty of leftovers.

Getting the media to call something like what happened in Paris an 'atrocity' is of the same difficulty as having Obozo use the words 'Islamic terrorists'. What these terrorists do, according to our media betters, is a 'tragedy', as if some earthquake or flood killed everybody. I guess the word 'atrocity' is just too judgmental.
