Stephen Lynch (D., Mass.) disclosed that a congressional investigation recently found that at least 72 people working at the Department of Homeland Security also "were on the terrorist watch list."
You know who wasn't on the no-fly list? The San Bernardino shooters. Nor was the Fort Hood shooter. Nor the Boston bombers. Nor the Chattanooga shooter. In other words, no perpetrator of any major attack on American soil was on the no-fly list.
Think of it this way: Obama is the pilot of the plane called America. We, the People, are the passengers. We can't see the captain, but his periodic announcements tell us that he's up there in the cockpit. Suddenly, we become aware of a disturbance on the plane. We look anxiously at the speakers above our heads, waiting for Captain Obama to tell us what's wrong and how he's going to fix it. Instead, we get either silence or a bizarre rant from the cockpit about the bright sunlight outside the plane.Now imagine you're on the plane: Given that your captain has just shown himself to be either absent or insane in the face of a clear and present danger, are you going to continue to sit peacefully in your seat hoping for the best, or are you going to unbuckle your seat belt, search for anything that can possibly be used as a weapon, and go to face the problem yourself?

My advice to Jimmy is to not get complacent. Mom went in for a brain scan and the doctor was happy to report they couldn't see anything and we thought that was great. Three hours later at home she leaned over to me and asked me to call an ambulance because she felt really horrible. She never came home again.

The other exciting thing is that I have committed to make a "red riding hood" type cape and hood for a friend's daughter. She is 3 feet tall and likes capes. Oh well, we all had issues at that age, I personally liked wearing the Tinker-Toy bucket on my head.
But this evening to test the pattern I made one about 1/3 scale. It turned out OK for what I put into it. It would be about right fit for Barbie.

Went and showed pops how to load a handgun and put it it battery this morning. He mentioned that 'you know you're pointing that at your mother.'
And it was, and it was my stupid fault. Bottom line...don't get stupid comfortable. I 'knew' it was unloaded but that's when the shot hits the fan.

Night Flight was a great show. There's classic stuff that's still in my record/CD collection, which I discovered because I saw it on that show (and *not* MTV).
Oh, and back on the Bond-a-week habit. Tonight's episode: Goldeneye. The only Bond I've seen before, and I didn't really remember much because I last saw it on VHS in 1996. Nevertheless, one of the better ones IMHO. Enjoyed most of it.

of fuel purchases never did get properly debited to my account.
For about six months or so the local theater was having some sort of problem with their system; only about half the charges would actually go through. They fixed it recently and a giant backlog of charges went through.

I am not really balancing. Just "vetting" the entries on the statement against my debit slips. Of course there are some debit slips I lose. But I always retain enough to get a sense of where I was at the time, and where I was spending money. So if I see a charge for fuel at point "B" with no debit slip, but I have debit slips for points "A" and "C", then its jake with me.
And if I ever get into a warranty dispute or a "you didn't pay me" dispute with some vendor, I have some chance of documenting my case.

The fiancee and I have an odd, somewhat corporate and/or non-profit-like web of bank accounts. Most of the transactions in our accounts are auto-generated and very repetitive.
As an example, We each auto-transfer $X to the "mortgage fund" account every month -- and every month, there is a mortgage payment of $Y that is auto-debited against the account. Each month the balance is about $800 higher....until December or April, when we pay property taxes or homeowners' insurance, respectively. It makes reviewing our transactions in this account a trivial exercise -- only certain kinds of transactions should be there, they should mostly be bank-generated, most of them are the same every month, and the ones that are annual are obvious.

As an odd point of interest, most of the laws regarding fraud, identity theft, etc. were all written with mailed written statements in mind. Accordingly, there's little reason to panic immediately when things go sideways. On the other hand, there is often a presumption that the bank's story is your story if you don't send a complaint/correction within about 60 days of when you got a statement. So if someone fraudulently charges your account and you discover it 10 months later, you can't just reverse the charges or get your card to fix it......you have to sue the perp and enforce a judgement.

Now that SSDs are getting affordable enough to use in external drives, having a bus that can keep up with SATA-III's 6 Gbps and beyond, once new controllers for native USB SSDs appear. I picked up (for Jerry) a 480 GB SSD on Black Friday for $100 that went into a USB 3.1 enclosure that was free after rebate. This was surprisingly from the SIIG brand. They're looking to step up their game, producing a cutting edge product and in far more attractive packaging than one expects from them.
Under USB 3.0 the transfer rate is 275 MB per second, going from internal SSD to external in the enclosure. This is the upper limit for USB 3.0 after protocol overhead and the shared bus losses. Well short of the speed the SATA-III SSD can do in either direction. I'm expecting that over USB 3.1 to the new machine's PCIe SSD (1500 MB per second write speed) will utilize the full read speed (550 MBps) of the external SSD.
This may not seem necessary but I'm just starting to work with 4K video content and the value makes itself known very quickly. Thunderbolt may finally find its market now that it can be used to connect PCIe M.2 SSD at close to their full performance. The video editor market will probably see hybrid drives that contain a multi-TB platter drive and an M.2 stick for cache, allowing high capacity and high performance for the file currently being edited.
It's a bunch of exciting advances, making the PC interesting again.

My mad idea was to put something like an oil rig on a shallow seamount somewhere far from any nation's Exclusive Economic Zones in the Pacific, anchor an elevator to it, and build most of the actual colony underwater. It's technologically possible, and there's some species of edible kelp that could do wonders for feeding it without relying too much on surface barges or hydroponics (including some that taste like bacon). The main difficulties I can foresee rely on the fact that resource extraction would be a special kind of pain, and it'd need to be of a sufficient size to maintain a pretty solid industrial base in order to meet the need for mini-subs and SCUBA gear. All in all, about as challenging as colonizing Mars... but without the rockets, easier escape, and shorter supply chains.

Spend more for the SSD option. (It's the standard on Macs now but most low-end PC models don't offer it yet due to the problem of advertising less capacity for a higher price. The difference in the user experience is worth every penny.
Over the course of 2016 more models will offer not just SSD but PCIe rather SATA for the connection. This is another huge leap that OS developers are going to be working out how best to exploit for a long time, which is one reason Microsoft is stepping up the pace on major updates to Windows.

It seriously depends on how you want to approach each of those five facets, and what you'll be doing with them. Watch a few movies and spreadsheets are the easiest, and maybe the books -- are you talking true publishing, or just something Word compatible that can be formatted as published?
ACAD and music can range from drawing and MIDI sequencing to 3D with 6-axis toolpaths and sound-crafting using blends of sampled/modified/recorded/created waveforms. How far are you looking to dive into the rabbit holes?

IMHO, "surf well enough to securely handle financial accounts" is a bad joke. That's not to say you shouldn't do anything online, but security is a complex subject and you need to keep an eye on your risks.

You are exceedingly wise to note the risk of gigging with a machine with personal info -- and yet Apple (AKA "The Borg Collective") wants to share everything across all of your devices. They have a stellar safety record to date, but when they get cracked it's going to be EPIC......and they will be cracked.
Android's security is notoriously bad -- although there are some Blackberry devices that are starting to sandbox the Android sandbox and give the user power-tools to police it.
Your music computer may well be a dedicated W7 box. It gets you hardware integration/response, flexibility, user interface, available software......and if you never, ever, ever, ever, ever use it for web-browsing, you have a decent level of security.

For most of this, I'd recommend Linux Mint (more friendly) or Ubuntu (more capable). Either will give you spreadsheets and Word docs, movie watching and ACAD. They can run on a variety of hardware and may well run on some antiques you have around. Linux is typically more efficient than Windows with any given hardware, so you'll likely see a performance boost. If you're looking for generic laptops on the cheap, monitor woot.com.

I pull files from youtube and various sites that post transcriptions. the sites seem dangerous. I download guitarpro files, and they don't seem to be a problem. for everything else I cut and paste to avoid potential issues.

I am surfing with Linux. Daily. With NoScript, Adblock. and Privacy Badger on hardcore settings. And then I do security scans fairly often that mostly alert in my Firefox cache files -- on java that never got executed because of NoScript. There is a metric fuckton of malware and commercialware that is not your friend out there.
I'm also doing this on a computer I can afford to lose. My original plan was to only browse the web from virtual machines, but I'm running behind.

There is a lot of stuff about wireless routers that people don't get. And, since most of them operate at multiple-Gbps speeds, that can get weird real quickly. While it is a very complex subject, a good rule of thumb is to drop your router off of the ISP's router and go wireless from there.

It was actually a positive encounter. I noted that 1945 was when WWII ended, not when it began. There was some banter about when WWII started, with the lead clerk saying that 1938 didn't matter because he was an American and it wasn't our problem before 1942 [sic]. I went back after I'd dropped my stuff in the car to remind the bagging kid that "December 7, 1941 was A Day That Will Live in Infamy", which caused him to squelp "That's tomorrow."

I took a hike through a wooded area adjacent to my local town park. Basically, the town owns the wooded area and since it's right there next to the park, they put some trails through it and made it part of the park.
