Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (12-6-2015)At this point in his presidency, Obama speaks with only one tone, the slightly exasperated and sometimes not-merely-slightly exasperated "adult in the room" who constantly has to correct his fellow Americans, who are always flying off the handle, calling for options that "aren't who we are", betraying our values, and so on. He's always so disappointed in us. Obama repeatedly peddles euphemisms and false assurances. Reality refuses to conform to Obama's prescriptions. Obama is as impervious to experience as the worst men who ever lived. Obama does not trust the American people with the truth in part because he believes the American people cannot be trusted with the truth and in part because the truth is inimical to his projects. The West doesn't want to admit the appeal of evil, because that would require admitting that evil exists. And if evil exists, then that implies a duty to be good, which they would find onerous and tediously old-fashioned. Liberals coined the verb "radicalize" to take the onus off terrorists who shoot 31 people, killing 14 of them. It is the atheistic version of the old Flip Wilson line about "the devil made me do it" (a line that predates Flip Wilson, but I like Flip Wilson). I will grant you that the devil tempts people, but people have freewill and choose to follow the devil of their own volition. Quote of the Day V - But Still Edition Opponents of gun control are saying, as they do after every killing, that no law can unfailingly forestall a specific criminal. That is true. They are talking, many with sincerity, about the constitutional challenges to effective gun regulation. Those challenges exist. They point out that determined killers obtained weapons illegally in places like France, England and Norway that have strict gun laws. Yes, they did. "Freedom is more powerful than fear." Now let me take your guns away based on a secret list that only I control.
Lawyers For San Bernardino Terrorists' Family Imply That Maybe the Victims Were To Blame His evil bigotry: Being a Messianic Jew who was pro-NRA, anti-Planned Parenthood and was worried about Muslim terrorism. On That Proposed No Fly List Gun Ban He ominously declared, "this is a matter of national security". yet for some reason, all of those people on the no-fly list and the terror watch list who allegedly represent a national security threat aren't being arrested. Earlier today Rep. Stephen Lynch (D., Mass.) disclosed that a congressional investigation recently found that at least 72 people working at the Department of Homeland Security also "were on the terrorist watch list." Think of it this way: Obama is the pilot of the plane called America. We, the People, are the passengers. We can't see the captain, but his periodic announcements tell us that he's up there in the cockpit. Suddenly, we become aware of a disturbance on the plane. We look anxiously at the speakers above our heads, waiting for Captain Obama to tell us what's wrong and how he's going to fix it. Instead, we get either silence or a bizarre rant from the cockpit about the bright sunlight outside the plane. The Scandi: Know Your Enemy Part XXI New Video From PMJ Featuring Puddles Pity Party and Haley Reinhart John Howland - The Luckiest Pilgrim Ever Yet Howland, who boarded the ship as Carver's servant, probably had a greater impact on the history of the United States than any of them. Hundreds of thousands of Americans will sit down for Thanksgiving dinner Thursday unaware that they owe their very existence to Howland, who almost never even made it to the New World. Remembering Night Flight TV (1981-1988 ) I remembering setting our VCR to record Night Flight overnight on Saturdays. You never knew what would show up on it - new bands that got no air or MTV-play, oddball movies and interviews, cult and niche films, some dreck, and generally interesting and eclectic stuff you couldn't find anywhere else. Some of these Barbie's look like Skipper or Scooter or Barbie' sister. I have one of those really old Barbie's that was my cousin's, with the evil slanty eyes. Not sure the year of mine as all this stuff is at my Mom's house. I had a Ken whose head kept falling off. I am thinking my brother's GI Joe did this, as, at our house things were lively in Ye Olde Barbie Crib. GI Joe used to drive the pink Barbie car, while Barbie drove the jeep. (Ken's hair was also partially off, like Obarky's, and drawn in with markers). A friend in 5th grade showed me how people had sex with Barbie and Ken. Imagine my surprise many years later.
Which brings me to the color of Oblahblah's hair today. Was it Uncle Ben gray? The "I'm so worried about our nation?" elder statesman. Or, blacker, the youthful Burock, friend of the stars at wherever he went after his telepropter told him to (I still like the powerful picture of the empty chair behind him). I feel so much safer/not. Pardon my ignorance, but what does the 'NOP' stand for?

Posted by: speedster1 at December 06, 2015 11:08 PM (1brdf) No OPeration -- There is a computer "language" called "Assembler" that is one tiny smidge up from the ones-and-zeros that the processor actually sees. In it, you sometimes have to force the processor to do nothing at all so that things can catch up (e.g. if you had a math unit that took 3 cycles to put the result of adding A and B into C, you'd go "load A", "load B", "addAB", NOP, NOP, NOP, store C -- if you stored C without waiting for the math to finish, you'd have garbage.) The other exciting thing is that I have committed to make a "red riding hood" type cape and hood for a friend's daughter. She is 3 feet tall and likes capes. Oh well, we all had issues at that age, I personally liked wearing the Tinker-Toy bucket on my head. But this evening to test the pattern I made one about 1/3 scale. It turned out OK for what I put into it. It would be about right fit for Barbie. And why shouldn't people listen to ISIS and turn to evil, when fools like Obama and the liberal elites running this country give no condemnation, extract no penalty, and assess no punishment for doing so? Liberals don't believe in God and God's punishment, but they refuse to play His role even when it's necessary for survival. They are evolutionary failures.

I had contrasted a Christmas message from the Oval Office of Ronald Reagan with the barrenness of the empty desk and undecorated, apparently much unused room - not even a "holiday plant" , and the words of the emptier suit that had somewhere else to be.
But if you really want to see a contrast See the man speak to the nation in a time of trouble, and manage not only to reassure but to lift up..... Watch the challenger speech, or the appropriately strong and resolute reaction to the bombing of the marine base in Leban. What's so peculiar is to see a man who believes what h says, and feels honestly an anguish to overcome, the honor of the mission, the reach for something greater and higher. Hey everybody. Glad we all survived The Speech tonight.
Night Flight was a great show. There's classic stuff that's still in my record/CD collection, which I discovered because I saw it on that show (and *not* MTV). Oh, and back on the Bond-a-week habit. Tonight's episode: Goldeneye. The only Bond I've seen before, and I didn't really remember much because I last saw it on VHS in 1996. Nevertheless, one of the better ones IMHO. Enjoyed most of it. On the Linda Stasi article:
I think I heard about the co-worker who argued with Farook about Islam on TV. It was the most irresponsible thing to mention, but it had a purpose. They (the radical Left) want this to be about the Right. So, so badly. They had to eat it with gun control, and though they'd loveto have a second life on this, most have realized that this is one they "lost". And not lost in the true sense of the actual tragedy. No, lost as a political battle. Because they don't care about these lives, or the next ones. Posted by: Nutsy the Buzzard at December 07, 2015 12:17 AM (+s5bL) 309

Wanted to mention to everybody, last week I gave in and bought *all three* of Adele's albums. She's named each one after her age when she recorded them: 19, 21, and the new one is 25.
However, I wonder how long she'll keep it up. Let's hope she doesn't get too full of herself or the below is likely to happen: Five years from now... Adele turns 30... "Adele 28" Ten years form now... Adele turns 35... "Adele 29" 16 years from now... Adele turns 42... "Adele 21 Part II" And of course her final album, "Adele > Dirt." Those terrible shooters, shooting so many bullets, out of their shoot-guns. Because only guns shoot bullets which kill and hurt people, so shooting is bad and let's get rid of all the guns that shoot, and all the bullets that the shooters use to shoot people. See what they're doing? I'd bet any money that there is an MSM style guide that says "If the killers used a gun, always call them shooters. Not murderers or killers." Spectre was very vanilla, but not bad. Waltz as a villain could have been great, but apparently they are saving him for next time. I've been having a weird sort of colonial ambition lately. I'm completely unenthusiastic about the ability of my country being able to find the mental and physical fortitude to stand up and repel the invasions pouring across our nonexistent borders, and everywhere else our civilization is in retreat and collapse. If nobody's going to stand up and fight, then the only logical thing to do is try to save what's left and start again somewhere else.
The obvious problem is that the list of available "anywhere else" on Earth is pretty much "the seafloor", or pick some place that isn't on Earth. I'm seriously considering trying to crowdfund a space program or seasteading project. Because hey, all kinds of stupid things get funded, so why not something necessary? Posted by: FormerlyMountainTurtle at December 07, 2015 01:15 AM (hipNa) The fiancee and I have an odd, somewhat corporate and/or non-profit-like web of bank accounts. Most of the transactions in our accounts are auto-generated and very repetitive. As an example, We each auto-transfer $X to the "mortgage fund" account every month -- and every month, there is a mortgage payment of $Y that is auto-debited against the account. Each month the balance is about $800 higher....until December or April, when we pay property taxes or homeowners' insurance, respectively. It makes reviewing our transactions in this account a trivial exercise -- only certain kinds of transactions should be there, they should mostly be bank-generated, most of them are the same every month, and the ones that are annual are obvious. Accordingly, there's little reason to panic immediately when things go sideways. On the other hand, there is often a presumption that the bank's story is your story if you don't send a complaint/correction within about 60 days of when you got a statement. So if someone fraudulently charges your account and you discover it 10 months later, you can't just reverse the charges or get your card to fix it......you have to sue the perp and enforce a judgement. Cthulu, you asked me last night about USB 3.1 but I was already headed to bed and saw it in the morning.
Right off the bat, the bandwidth is doubled from 5 Gbps to 10 Gbps. Now that SSDs are getting affordable enough to use in external drives, having a bus that can keep up with SATA-III's 6 Gbps and beyond, once new controllers for native USB SSDs appear. I picked up (for Jerry) a 480 GB SSD on Black Friday for $100 that went into a USB 3.1 enclosure that was free after rebate. This was surprisingly from the SIIG brand. They're looking to step up their game, producing a cutting edge product and in far more attractive packaging than one expects from them. Under USB 3.0 the transfer rate is 275 MB per second, going from internal SSD to external in the enclosure. This is the upper limit for USB 3.0 after protocol overhead and the shared bus losses. Well short of the speed the SATA-III SSD can do in either direction. I'm expecting that over USB 3.1 to the new machine's PCIe SSD (1500 MB per second write speed) will utilize the full read speed (550 MBps) of the external SSD. This may not seem necessary but I'm just starting to work with 4K video content and the value makes itself known very quickly. Thunderbolt may finally find its market now that it can be used to connect PCIe M.2 SSD at close to their full performance. The video editor market will probably see hybrid drives that contain a multi-TB platter drive and an M.2 stick for cache, allowing high capacity and high performance for the file currently being edited. It's a bunch of exciting advances, making the PC interesting again. Posted by: Epobirs at December 07, 2015 02:21 AM (IdCqF) Posted by: Spun and Murky at December 07, 2015 02:21 AM (4DCSq) 433

It's technologically possible, and there's some species of edible kelp that could do wonders for feeding it without relying too much on surface barges or hydroponics (including some that taste like bacon). The main difficulties I can foresee rely on the fact that resource extraction would be a special kind of pain, and it'd need to be of a sufficient size to maintain a pretty solid industrial base in order to meet the need for mini-subs and SCUBA gear. All in all, about as challenging as colonizing Mars... but without the rockets, easier escape, and shorter supply chains. Bir Tawil might actually be the easiest, though it's a remote, inhospitable strip of desert. The problem is that it's between Egypt and Sudan and you'd probably get jihaded out of business fairly quickly if you ever achieved anything like success.

Spend more for the SSD option. (It's the standard on Macs now but most low-end PC models don't offer it yet due to the problem of advertising less capacity for a higher price. The difference in the user experience is worth every penny. Over the course of 2016 more models will offer not just SSD but PCIe rather SATA for the connection. This is another huge leap that OS developers are going to be working out how best to exploit for a long time, which is one reason Microsoft is stepping up the pace on major updates to Windows. Watch a few movies and spreadsheets are the easiest, and maybe the books -- are you talking true publishing, or just something Word compatible that can be formatted as published? ACAD and music can range from drawing and MIDI sequencing to 3D with 6-axis toolpaths and sound-crafting using blends of sampled/modified/recorded/created waveforms. They have a stellar safety record to date, but when they get cracked it's going to be EPIC......and they will be cracked. Android's security is notoriously bad -- although there are some Blackberry devices that are starting to sandbox the Android sandbox and give the user power-tools to police it. I saw something yesterday that must be a metaphor for something.
I took a hike through a wooded area adjacent to my local town park. Basically, the town owns the wooded area and since it's right there next to the park, they put some trails through it and made it part of the park. At one point a little water had pooled in a slight depression, maybe 2 inches deep at most. So the genius parks department had ACTUALLY put up yellow crime scene-styled tape labelled "TRAIL CLOSED - USE ALTERNATE TRAIL" on both sides of the itty-bitty puddle. I stood there in the middle of the woods laughing out loud. I mean seriously, no one gets the fact that you can just WALK AROUND THE FUCKING PUDDLE? Good Lord in heaven, we are living in an Idiocracy. People who have no idea what the word "hiking" even means trying to tame the woods into a theme park for special snowflakes who are micro-aggressed by puddles is bad enough, but again...the puddle was only on the trail. Sam Kinison scream. JUST WALK AROUND THE PUDDLE. OH-OHHHHHHH! Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at December 07, 2015 05:32 AM (HMt16) 480
JUST WALK AROUND THE PUDDLE. OH-OHHHHHHH!
Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? But, I might not see the puddle, 'cause I'm hiking while I'm looking at my "smart" phone and then I might slip and fall in the puddle and then I'm gonna sue somebody because I can't walk and read and take a selfie at the same time. Dammit Posted by: Bruce at December 07, 2015 05:34 AM (8ikIW) 481

I really should have taken a picture. Kicking myself for not doing so. And another thing...this is deep in the woods, and it's not like they have a forest ranger posted there 24-7 (or ever, for that matter) to enforce it. We're just a small town. They don't have rangers.
So if someone is really too lazy or too stupid to take a few lousy steps off the trail, they could just, you know, step over the tape. Or do the Limbo under it. Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at December 07, 2015 05:38 AM (HMt16) Posted by: Bruce at December 07, 2015 05:39 AM (8ikIW) 484

Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at December 07, 2015 05:52 AM (HMt16) They took a Left turn a long time ago, but now they're fully in the tank for the globalist political-industrial complex. Would it be accurate to say that Obama's speech was an example of 'word salad'?
- I'd say more words through a Nutribullet Ninja creating a Kool Aid to be drunk. Posted by: The Great White Snark at December 07, 2015 06:08 AM (Nwg0u) 501
>>>To me the Barbie faces from 1967, 1976, and the early 2000s look the most natural and pretty.

Washington Post on his majestic speech http://preview.tinyurl.com/nqu39ph What we can do - and must do - is make it harder for them to kill Obama said. So that would mean buy body armor, arm up, and be prepared to fight back when terrorists try to kill you. Is that what he meant? Posted by: Tauntly Wanpile at December 07, 2015 06:09 AM (UXr0T) 503
I pray that Venezuela, and all of those other foolish South American Socialist countries, don't go all bugf*ck crazy and start doing civil war just because the commies down there lost an election. We just don't need more refugees from war zones right now.

Good thing Post Modern Jukebox did the arrangement of "Mad World" that they did. Puddles singing in his usual style could have me running a bath and reaching for razor blades.

There was some banter about when WWII started,
- I've been reading The German War by Stargardt about Germans' perspective on WWII. Throughout they saw them selves as the victims. For example, the world thinks the war started 9/1/39 when Germany invaded Poland. Everybody but the Germans. They thought it started 9/3/39 when Britain and France declared on Germany for invading Poland. Posted by: The Great White Snark at December 07, 2015 06:16 AM (Nwg0u) 507
>>>At this point in his presidency, Obama speaks with only one tone, the slightly exasperated and sometimes not-merely-slightly exasperated "adult in the room" who constantly has to correct his fellow Americans, who are always flying off the handle, calling for options that "aren't who we are", betraying our values, and so on. He's always so disappointed in us.
So he pulls a con. He strikes a posture and bluffs people into taking him seriously. But it works. That's why I don't get when people say that Cruz is too argumentative or pedantic. If he can play the same game, but with truth on his side, all the better. Posted by: Bruce Boehner at December 07, 2015 06:18 AM (V/11D) 508
Heard Let it Go at the PJeff Dickens fest the other day. I do not get the appeal of that song. It has a kitschy, saccharine pop feel to it. It is a pernicious engine in the Special Snowflake factory.

--------------------- No, that is really how a lot of people are trained to see Nature these days. Stay on the clearly marked path, touch nothing, take nothing, and admire all the cute animals. Stop and have overpriced mineral water and granola (do NOT litter, pick up crumbs), carry on, then congratulate one's self for being out in Nature.
