Overnight Open Thread (5 Dec 2015)

Not that I need any new reasons, but here are 7 reasons you should buy a gun after San Bernardino.

Obama Thinks Taking Your Guns Will Stop Terrorists. Josh Earnest said yesterday that gun control was the best way to stop terrorists. Fox News' Peter Doocy asked if Obama thought gun control could deter terrorism; Earnest explained, "Yes. The president believes that passing common sense gun laws that makes it harder for people with bad intentions to get guns, makes the country safer." But we know that the San Bernardino terrorists bought their guns legally, then modified them in illegal fashion. They also had IEDs. California has some of the strictest gun control in the nation. That fact led Senator Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) to declare, idiotically, that "Sensible gun laws work. We've proven it in California and we are not going to give up." She said this the day after the shooting in San Bernardino that prompted the conversation in the first place - the day after a bunch of unarmed people were shot while waiting four minutes for the cops to arrive.

Do you feel safe?

West Virginia

West Virginia is the only state in the country where more than half of adults are not working, according to the Census Bureau. If they'd stop electing Democrats, they just might start to get their jobs back but they won't.

Food Wars

Seven foods that have led to wars.

News Bloopers

A herniated dick? That sounds painful.

Psychosis

So what do you see in the above image? What you say might mean you are psychotic. Or not.

Bombs

If we're running out of bombs for a low intensity campaign, what does that say about our readiness for a major war against a near peer opponent?

U-2 Landings

From the perspective of the chase car.

Active Shooter

What to do in an active shooter situation when you find yourself in a "gun free zone". It helps if you keep some "weapons" in your desk say like wasp killer, carbureter cleaner with a lighter, super bright flashlight, a powerful laser pointer, a special letter opener, etc.

What Is Right Wing?

Alright morons, check this out. This group has grouped mass shootings into two categories, deadly jihadist attacks and deadly right wing attacks. Can you spot what's wrong with the "right wing attacks" column? The WaPo didn't. BTW, they define right wing as ANYONE that is anti-government. If that's the case, why don't they just use the label deadly anti government attacks then? So basically, the gist of it is to inflate the number of "right wing" attacks and show that we are attacked more often by "right wingers" than Islamic terrorists.

Chemical Compounds

10 chemical compounds with immature jokes for names.

3. Vaginatin

So, this happened. Even though it seems like vaginatin is either a) a bad fake answer on a high school chemistry test or b) an over-the-counter medication no one would ever want to buy, it’s actually a compound isolated from the plant Selinum vaginatum, a member of the carrot family.

Cat Color And Their Personalities

Surprising things you never knew about your cat.

11 Boxer's surreal statement reminds me of things that came out of Pelosi's mouth-hole. The technique seems to be to say self-evidently false things with a superior tone of conviction. The one I remember from Pelosi went something like "I stand with my fellow Catholics in supporting a woman't right to choose [abortion]"

About fifteen seconds after the "we're in looovvve" chemistry wore off, my son and his wife realized what 'most other folks knew from the start, that they really weren't meant for each other, and decided on amicable divorce. Sad, anyway, but better than after they'd had kids.

Son decided he'd date around a while, not get serious again too soon. So, naturally, he and a girl he knew from a previous job dated and hit it off really well, and ended up going steady. Unexpectedly.

Tomorrow, son is driving into town and, at my daughter's house, we will be having lunch with son and Meet the Girlfriend - and her us. (Other son will be working and miss the event, alas.) So, a true relationship test.

I've only seen pix (I approve) and heard a little about her, but my astute and nearly infallible judgment of people and couple-compatibility has not set off any alarms yet. So far so good.

The thinking: making the race into a binary choice between Bush and Trump might be the only way a majority of primary voters go with Bush.

I still would love a post-apocalyptic series that went back to steam engine technology and match-locks shading into flint-locks, and minimal cannon, mostly 1500's level and the leather-cannon style made out of bound up wood staves.
Make some argument that Iron casting is not up to snuff, and there is a serious copper shortage.
Now there is a world with a need for swords, pikes and phalanxes. Essentially the Three Musketeers' style of fighting.

I don't think there would be a serious shortage of most metals in a post-Apocalypse scenario, unless you postulate a society several thousand years after the fact. Given that the world and local populations would have fallen to a tiny fraction of their present number, the detritus of this society would provide the post-Apoc crowd as much metal as they could possibly ever want. There's about a ton of steel in the average automobile. Not to mention aluminum, and copper by the pound. And lead, too. In the short term after the event, clever people could salvage worked metal from the wreckage, and repurpose it to their own needs. You could make a musket barrel from the steering shaft of a car; in fact tribesmen in parts of India did exactly that in one of the rebellions against British rule in the early 20th Century. And they made smokeless powder out of cut-up celluloid movie film.

144 I'm doing big chocolate chip and some oatmeal raisin cookies.

Here's something I learned, you all may know this already but they don't say anything on the package about doing this.

When done these cookies don't spread as much as you'd think and they're thick.

So what I do is when they're done they're still soft so I take a metal spatula and flatten them out a bit.

It makes them a bit tastier I think because otherwise they are soft in the center.

But that may be just me and my betty crocker cookie bake oven setup.

I have to laugh, I have a Refrigerator made by Hotpoint which used to make only ovens and such and an oven made by Frigidaire which used to make only refrigerators.

Well I think it's funny. It must be an appliance repair man joke.

145 I have ended up with a Baker's dozen of kittehs, and among them is a diluted tortie who has more personality than 5 cats put together. Her diluted Tortie daughter is on track to be the same way, and was batting her brothers around and biting their ears before she could even walk.

My Calico is pretty quiet. She was kind of a rascal when she was real little, but is gotten much mellower at the grand old age of 6 months. My orange and white Tabby boys are all pretty normal as cats go, but it could just be the contrast with the Torties. I have two more-yellowish-than-orange Tabbies who are very skittish.

And then there is little Beauregard Jackson Edward Lee, who is a wee little fuzzy mostly grey kitten, with Tabby stripes around his white face and a lovely white collar and is the cutest kitten to ever walk the Earth.

He owns me body and soul, plays me like a fiddle, and spent several hours curled up under one of the Christmas trees today. You have never seen anything as adorable as my giant of a husband carrying him around in the palm of his hand. (He's got Thor whipped, too, and Thor isn't even a cat person)

I still want some feline affection, and he will give it, just on his terms. He sits with me in my office while I work, sleeps and purrs. Every night he curls up in bed with me under my right armpit. When I come home he is there, in the garage as I pull in, rolling on his back and begging me to pet him, which I can exactly 2 times, if I go for a third time, he bites. He is hell on any rodents that would even consider coming inside and there aren't many as long as he is around. I only let him outside if I can supervise him, otherwise, off he goes. When I watch tv he is on the sofa above my head, licking my hair. My wife picked him out from the shelter. He is really cute but deadly. We named him Dexter after the tv character.

247 AOP, the reason I would push for the lower level technology is because of the need to build and maintain and supply a modern style army with limited technological base.

For example, bumping brass to forming a cartridge is hard, exact and is about 14 steps requiring precision dies if you are not interesting in just making Snyder or Burnside brass, and the correct iron casting at the level of building a cannon, even a light Napoleon or carronade type that won't blow up is exacting task. It is harder if you decide to cast in steel.

The English cast iron cannon well, but they had a head start. I have read that the Swedes had trouble starting their own industry in spite of all the resources, and when the went into building the arsenal at Tula, Russia, it took half a century or so for the Russians to get up to speed. And the Spanish never got their heads around the process for various reasons in spite of their great need for big guns.

Primers could be an issue also, though the original were based on Mercury fulminate. But you need Mercury and a steady supply if you are planning to supply an army.
Nitro powder could be problematic, it requires more than just nitrating cellulose or starch. Guncotton had issues when it was first adopted, the US ordinance rules during and after WWI insisted on keeping BP and Nitro powders very separate since the nitro powders used then tended to decompose. I understood that the acids were not totally washed out during processing and that made the guncotton unstable as it aged.
Also, remember, every bullet you shoot you have to make, and you have to decide what your troopie carries into combat and is expected to use. Then you have to figure out how to supply that every day until you win or don't.

If you are decivilizing it is arguably because the people who know how to do things are all dead, or there is such a population crash to make anything other than pure survival crafts a luxury. In either case, there is a lot of written instructions on how to do things around, as well as tools, to aid a renaissance, but technology can be argued to be like cooking. It takes more than just ingredients, a stove and kitchen tools and a recipe book to make a decent meal, you have to have some idea of what you are doing and why it works or doesn't. That experience is harder to learn on your own.

The Afghans have always been masters of building home-made weapons, I have seen some photo-journalism displays showing them rifling barrels for heavy machine guns by hand, but they also depend on imported ammo. I am not sure if they cast or forge their own barrels either.

Still, my argument is that would be more entertaining. Both the action and sword fights, but also the technology development and the decisions on whether to re-equip the whole army or just do a special squad type of adoption.
A lot of action shows sound like "who do I stab first, and who do I seduce next", which turns into a soap opera after a while.

250 the 18th amendment was passed because they managed to convince enough people that banning something would actually stop people from finding a way to have it if they wanted it.

Stopping alcohol addiction is actually a worthy cause but you cannot ban something to get rid of it.

That's never worked, never will work (except in totalitarian regimes) because humans are clever and ingenious and if they want/need something then they will figure out a way to get it.

Sounds familiar doesn't it?

The best thing is legalize poor behavior and then regulate it without making it impossible to practice. Of course bad behavior (outright criminality) has to be banned but as we can see it never goes away.

I live in rural PA and you are not allowed to fire a weapon in or around housing. (like 400 feet)

It's not something I agree with but I can understand how they'd want some limits to keep people from shooting their next door neighbors house up or killing someone as too many shooter don't pay attention to the landscape past the target.

Not that easy. Some commie cocksucker Federal Judge is sure to issue an injunction to keep the paper running, whether the owners like it or not. Journalists are ruthless amoral ratfuckers.

Case in point: Cellular phone pioneer Craig McCaw's exwife purchased the Santa Barbara News Press back in 2000 and actually had the audacity to expect that she would have control of the paper, including it's editorial content. The staff of commie fucktard journalists freaked out, and when they started publicly trashing her and the paper, she had a bunch of them frogmarched out of the building.

Immediately they started unionization. Not because they wanted to be union, but because it insulated the rest of them from being cashiered.

Ugly shit.

It took the old doctors office almost that long to get my records to the doctor here, who informs me that he can't write scrips for pain meds any more, I have to go to a pain clinic.

Of course by the time I get an appt, I'm feeling fine, but I was honest with the doctor and said I wanted a prescription so I had something on hand for the next flare up, which could be years from now, or it could be an hour from now, and after a great deal of bullshit and degradation ( although he was nice, but My God the questions) he gave me 30. But I have to go back in a month, even if I don't take any. (400 bucks for the first visit, 280 for all return visits, by the way)

In the mean time, I have found out one of my close friends is terminal and I am going to go stay with her for a few months. (She has no kids or anyone really to care for her)

I would like another prescription for back up, in case I have issues while I'm out of state, because I can just about imagine .

So I now find myself in the surreal position of probably having to lie about how many I've taken, and also taking some that I might not even need a few days before I go in, so it shows in my pee test.

I don't know if he'll give me any if I have over a certain amount left. Would he give me another scrip if I have 10 left, or is that too many?

I have no idea how much I need to take, or when to take it, so that it's in my system for the pee test. Is one the day before enough, or do I need to take one every day for a week?!

Absolutely fucking insane. I haven't even taken any since 2008; I have a bottle with three left. But they're treating everyone like a fucking junkie now.

Rant over.

I live in a dry county, by the way, there are plenty in the South.

I know you would not call the cops on him, and maybe he knows that, too. But he might be worried that one of the other neighbors might. I was just angling towards a way that you could hint to him that his late-hours target practice was not going unnoticed, without being confrontational about it.

Not the same but similar. My state still has the Blue laws of No liquor sales on Sunday (well drinking in the bar OK taking home not) and no car sales Both listed are dumb as hell laws. Since Car dealerships like the advantage of not having to pay salesmen Sunday. And so do liquor stores that compete with on off sale bars. How these laws survive is only due to political payoffs.

383 I grew up in a dry town. When I was a kid The Local Issue was that the city was not getting a cut of the state liquor tax because alcohol was not sold there.
During a session of the legislation a hearing was set up to determine if the state had to share this revenue with a dry town.
During the hearing, they city representative brought in the owner of the local garbage company (apparently looking like he had just come off one of his trucks) to testify.
He testified that there was about the same number of green and brown bottles in one town as the neighboring town where everyone bought their beer and wine.

So the legislation decided to cut the city in on the tax revenue.

Since has gone wet, the last holdout on local option after the repeal of the Volstead act.

Should be. Officially, it is a little adapter placed in a computer data cable that does something. More than a simple gender-changer or serial/parallel adapter. It might need a power supply of its own. For instance, sometimes I run a gas detector that uses a wireless link between the actual instrument, and the laptop that stores and processes the data. There is a dongle in the serial cable between the laptop and the radio terminal.

Last spring, I went to a range to try out different guns and found I liked the Glock G42 the best because I have small hands and it doesn't have much in the way of recoil. Then I kinda stopped going because the weather was beautiful on Saturday afternoons and I didn't want to spend time in a dark indoor range. I made notes of the different guns I tried. Would the G42 be the best choice for bringing down an attacker? I can't help thinking that the true test of a gun shouldn't be how comfortable I feel with it but how effectively it could stop a mugger/nutbag/ terrorist and so maybe I should go for something with more muscle.

I don't want them digging in my head if it won't work.

Apart from the TN, I also have some weird Occipital Neuralgia! I have never known anyone else that had it. Mine isn't near as painful as the TN, but I get this really hideous sensation that I can't even describe. The pain is really just a feeling of bruised or soreness, but the sensation is unlike anything I have ever felt and it makes me pace the floor. Also a horrible pressure like my head is going to explode, so they thought it was sinus related for awhile, or migraine, but it isn't a migraine, I know what that feels like.

I'm sorry yours is painful, it must be awful. I's very hard to treat, in my experience.

The best gun is one you are comfortable shooting, because practice is critical. If you buy a .45 that kicks but you hate shooting because it racks your hands and arms, you will not practice with it.

I don't know the Glock 42, as I shoot Springfields. If you like it and are comfortable with it, then that is plenty good enough.

I matters not if you have incredible stopping power in your hands and you miss.

Shoot what you like to shoot and can hit the target with.

.380 is not as stopping as other calibers but if you put 10 rounds into them......

Yes, of course .380 is an adequate self-defense round. You should shoot what you're comfortable with.

No, of course the .380 is not adequate. It doesn't begin with 4! Don't shoot anybody with that, it will only piss them off.

Hope this clears things up for you.

I am in no way an expert, but I'm pretty sure the experts will tell you that if you are not comfortable with your gun, and if it scares you, or makes you flinch from the recoil, you will never become proficient with it. A gun you can shoot comfortably will let you place your rounds on target. Even .22 shorts, on target, will do more good than a .44 Magnum round off in the rhubarb somewhere.

Well, the 380Auto can be kind of marginal for self-defense use, so it's really dependent upon ammo choice. You'll need to use good, modern hollowpoints for defensive use, like Hornady Critical Defense, Speer Gold Dot, Winchester Ranger etc.

More importantly, get some professional instruction. Once you learn proper grip and stance, and get some practice under your belt, you'll be surprised at how many different guns you can use comfortably and effectively. Having small hands or not having gorilla-like strength simply doesn't matter that much if you have good shooting form.

But bottom line is, ANY gun is better than no gun. If you're comfortable with the G42, then go with it.

The gun you feel most comfortable carrying and hitting a target with is the one you should choose. All the other bullshit about stopping power is just that. A .380 well placed that you actually have is better than a .45 you don't like to carry or are not accurate with. The chance you will need it is lottery numbers realm but conversely the only time you win is if you bought a ticket. Buy the one you want to be with you not the one you wish you had when you left it at home because you don't really feel comfortable with it..

Posted by: Carrboro Community College Alumnus at December 06, 2015 12:43 AM (26e2V)

456 Donna, .380 is not a bad round, and it will do what you want it to.

I will give you advice that was given to me:

1) get something you like and can shoot comfortably, because
2) you need to shoot it a lot to be comfortable with it, because
3) under stress you need to work it automatically without puzzling it out, because.
4) when you need it you need it.

second,
5) get something sized appropriately to you, because
6) you want to carry it with all the time, because
7) It doesn't do you any good to leave it it your trunk of your car because it is too heavy to carry around, and
your car is probably a lousy shot and doesn't need it anyways.

a 45 long colt revolver has all the stopping power in the world, but it is a boat anchor to carry around. If you are big like me it is merely unwieldy. I would hazard that for you, it would induce a list and tend to make you walk around in circles.

Also: who says you only can have one gun? They can be like a purse, depends on what you are wearing and the weather. The .380 isn't doing it? Try a Sig, try a Charter Arms Bulldog. Try a PPK for those formal occasions maybe.

Interesting. The dongle I have plugged in right now is a HASP. It is for the old version of my employer's wellsite striplog program, which I had to use this last go-round, for reasons that don't matter. Runs only under Windows XP, supposedly, although my cross-shift had it running under Win7, thanks to the help of a tech in the lab. Me, i just fired the XP on the old hard drive in this box, and lived in an XP world for 12 days. The "new" Win7 version of the same software is free. They gave up trying to sell it. Market is very limited, and declining, due to fall-off in oil prices. Go to their website, and download the program. Free trial license lasts 30 days, but now doesn't expire.

You *should* try some different models (the G43 is about the same size but 9mm instead of .380.

Heck, if your range is well stocked you could try a G29 (10mm auto) just to see what the far end of the spectrum is (that little thing is as like as not to set someone on fire with its muzzle blast).

People's sensitivity to recoil is individual, so you have to go with what works for you.

Train and practice. A .380 can get the job done, especially if you're collected and practiced, but I would *prefer* to start my scale with 9mm - good balance of power, size and recoil and *huge* selection of bullet and power options to choose from.

Be this as it may, we are sure that, was the mind now to inhabit a pellucid body, so pellucid as to make manifest all the thoughts and all the evil workings of the holiest heart on earth, the sight would shock and frighten and astonish even the most profligate sinner on this side hell. Every man would be an insupportable burden to himself, and a stalking horror to the rest of his species.

516 Repost from this morning--been thinking about years past *all day*:
-------------

Christmas memories in a small town, 1960s USofA:

Plenty of handmade decorations using fresh greens from the yard, plus cones, berries and ribbon.

Noma
lights-- testing the bulbs individually before screwing into the
string, so it'll light up on the first try! Fiddling with the circle of
wire to get the lights Just So on the tree.

(Grandma still had
antique candleholders for the tree, which we used *once* --just to
behold the sight-- and then promptly put them out!)

Shopping at
the 'general store' for trinkets and treats-- old, old building even
back then-- with thick wooden floors that resounded with your bootsteps
and would creak in certain spots. The differing aromas as you walked
through: scented candles, fresh fruit, harness leather, machine oil....

Playing
in the snow! The best hill was a long hike for little kids, so
sometimes the neighbor would pull our sleds along the road with her
horse.

Nighttime with almost no light pollution--I swear you
could see every star and galaxy in the sky from Grandma's back porch--
sipping hot cocoa on the porch swing with a thick snuggly blanket and my
siblings.

The MSM had reported one the victims, a Messianic Jew (ie. a Jewish convert to Christianity) as simply being a Jew, and there were what seemed to me misunderstandings on both sides to escalate into an argument. FWIW FS used it to express outrage at the attack, not to attack anyone here in anger.

Yeah, who ever thought that you'd have to think about such things at a classical music concert?

Speaking of which, I am presently watching and enjoying the Learning Company's music lecture series, which feature Prof. Robert Greenberg. I like his lectures immensely. I am learning a great deal about music I didn't know before, since I never learned how to play an instrument. It delights me that I can now recognize a closed cadence - I was like, "aha! I heard that!" More fun than just vaguely thinking "well, that sounds -nice, but I don't know why."

However, Prof. Greenberg kind of wrecked things for me when he announced in one of his asides that he thinks Gary Trudeau is a "genius," thus signaling that he was on the right (left) side politically.

That made me think about these left-wing classical composers and musicians - they are embodying and carrying on a Western tradition (since I imagine most of these composers and orchestra musicians and conductors are as far left as most actors are) but they side with those who hate and want to destroy the West.

577 I don't drink, much. I can't drink beer, gives me terrible gas and I hate the taste. I drink hard liquor but have no real interest in the hangover except occasionally.

So I feel kind of dorky hanging out with the guys and have to refuse a beer and then explain why and it comes off as me looking like an alcohol snob so I just don't bother to hang out.

It's a catch 22 situation.

I used to drink anything I could get someone to sell me but beer was never a favorite.

580 Last Wednesday, the Russian MoD delivered a lengthy presentation which contained compelling visual evidence of a connection between Islamic State's illegal and highly profitable trade in stolen Iraqi and Syrian crude and Turkey.

The slide show, hosted by Deputy Minister of Defence Anatoly Antonov, featured photos of oil trucks, videos of airstrikes and maps detailing the trafficking of stolen oil. It was the latest PR snafu for Erdogan who is struggling to convince Turkey's allies that The Kremlin's accusations are unfounded and that Ankara isn't set to put NATO in an awkward position by effectively instigating a shooting war with Russia.

Washington came to Erdogan's defense in the aftermath of Moscow's claims as State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the US is confident that Ankara "is not complicit in Islamic State oil smuggling." Russia seemed to take that denial in stride, but after US special envoy and coordinator for international energy affairs, Amos Hochstein, said on Friday that the amount of oil smuggled into Turkey from Syria is "of no significance from a volume perspective", Moscow appears to have had enough.

On Saturday, Russia accused the US of participating in a cover-up. "Our colleagues from the State Department and the Pentagon have confirmed that the photo-proof, which we presented at a briefing [on December 2], of the origin and destination of the stolen oil, coming from the areas controlled by the terrorists, is authentic. However, the US claim that they 'don't see the border crossings with tanker trucks crossing the border,' raises a smile, if only, because the photos are still images," Major General Igor Konashenkov, a Defense Ministry spokesman said. "We advise the American side to have a look at how the tanker trucks not only drive through checkpoints at the Turkish border, but pass through them without even stopping."

... Turkey is hell-bent on making sure that the Kurds do not come out of the Syrian civil war stronger than before, even if that means assisting ISIL.

596 FBI agents raided a Riverside home belonging to a friend of San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook as they try to determine whether the man purchased two of the semiautomatic rifles used in the massacre, according to a law enforcement source.

The source, who asked to remain anonymous because the case is ongoing, said officials have been trying to talk to the man to see what he knows. It's far from clear whether the man had anything to do with the violence or even knew what Farook did with the guns, the source added. A second source said the guns were purchased three years ago.

You mean, would it be possible that the world would differ in that respect, or, is aesthetics arbitrary?

I think no. It would have to differ in other respects, and would actually be worse than it is now.

So for instance, the government could decide that aesthetics was bigotry, and conditioned people out of their aesthetic sense by forcing them to watch that.

Or, people preferring insects to mammals would lead them to be insect otherkin, thus causing a plunge in birthrates.

657 So, the fiancee's company moved to a new location last year -- and my fiancee's group of about 40 employees was relegated to the basement of the new building. In previous years, they'd been stuck in an adjacent building and a repurposed garage.

The previous use of this building had been retail, and there are a pair of escalators leading from the main floor down to the basement and back -- unfortunately, neither works, so they serve as uncomfortable staircases.

There's no reason to have any insulation between floors, with a huge escalator well between them, so all there is for a ceiling is floor joists and subfloor, with added fire system pipes and air ducts, and some other miscellaneous plumbing and electrical.

So we used a metric boatload of tinsel to string from fire-system pipe to fire-system pipe, so everything above the cubes is shiny silver, gold, and red. We twisted red and white, and white and gold tinsel together and draped the "barber pole tinsel" along the cube walls. We hung bows on the end of every partition between cubes. The fiancee even has a Norfolk Pine we keep in a pot in our backyard for an office Christmas tree -- it's almost 5' tall now, and logistics is getting to be a problem. There's a lighted wreath, and an inflatable that has a penguin and a postbox mailing a letter to Santa.....

Her guys left drab basement-ville on Friday, but they'll be coming into tinsel and lights on Monday morning. I hope they'll be surprised and pleased.

Hey man. I'm in western NY. I work for a customs brokerage. We have to have someone on call 24-7 in case a driver gets stuck at the US-Canadian border due to a release issue (we cover the whole border by remote from one office.) But we run a tight ship and there are rarely problems with our releases.

It'll be a while before I can afford one or similar for myself. Meanwhile I get to live vicariously through working for others on cool stuff.

I also got my first taste of USB 3.1 with this machine. Another big change we'll take for granted in a few years.

I still haven't embraced Old Skul SSD's, in large part because it's hard to "invest" in something whose capabilities and costs are changing so fast....but tell me more about USB 3.1. I'm actually finding myself retreating to 2.0 'cause the RaspberryPi 2B+ doesn't do 3.0, but I'd been moving all my outside-the-box storage to 3.0 and putting 3.0 capabilities in my boxes previously. What does 3.1 promise, and what does it actually deliver?

And, BTW, speaking of promise and deliver -- the WD NAS RAID systems totally disabled Linux permissions (rwxrwxrwx) for Windows permissions (wtfwtfwtf) in a software upgrade. There's another software upgrade pending that I need to install and evaluate, but who the hell thought that might be acceptable? And if (as I suspect) they did it because of massive security holes, how did they not do a recall?

I hate to break it to you, but there is nothing to validate that the email that is supposedly required under Minx 0.7 is actually a valid email. Try using "butfirstyoumust@blowme.org" in that field and see how that works. Second, IIRC, it doesn't even change your hash. That only changes when your IP addy changes.

Best bet -- create a new email addy (e.g. "qlz1738625@gmail.com"), solicit contact at that addy, do whatever vetting you need to in order to feel comfortable sharing a more real email addy, then share the more reasonable addy, leaving the other to die.

On another subject. It was the damned ignition switch. I was going through and changing things out based on ease of access (insert philosophical discussion here), and I was contemplating going into the VTEC solenoid area.....when a gust of wind blew a leaf onto the top of my engine.

I could have happily screwed around with this thing for weeks, but with the rain and the seeds and the leaves, I suddenly became unwilling to crack the thing open. So I had it fixed. The guy swapped the ignition, and (so far) it's been working.

*Rolls eyes* Living is Silicon Valley is frequently like trying to play nice with a whole bunch of Type-A-personalities with Aspergers. And this can include people you are close to -- like fiancees and neighbors.

The fiancee made a big deal of having our door-wreath up Thanksgiving afternoon.....because (as she'd suspected) our neighbor got all his lights up the day after Thanksgiving (when she had to work). So she scored the all-important first decoration point, while losing the lights competition. She proceeded to do lights that weekend and Put Up More than he did -- making it a "push" with his early and her quantity.

Right now, as she sleeps, I can only imagine her dreams of totally CRUSHING the competition with her inflatable displays of Santa+transportation.....we have Santa in a plane, Santa in a train, Santa in a helicopter, and Santa riding a polar bear like a horse. We stopped at a Lowe's for power cords and I pointed out a Santa with a jetpack, but she didn't bite.

She may be wanting a tree this year.

I'm pretty sure that Bebe and Gushka could backchannel Tammy, and I've met them in person.....but (not to be hostile or anything), [1] I'm not sure that you're you; and [2] I'm not sure you're anyone to be trusted. If you've done any MoMes, consider those links.

But, again, using a disposable contact until you've done your vetting is perfectly reasonable.

It all comes down to a protocol. Let's say A and B want to communicate privately via email.

(1) A says, on the blog, with well-known hash "A1B2c" -- "Hey, B, flip me an email on 'blowme@gmail.com". (2) B sends email saying "Code word is Palomino" from "iamreallyb@gmail.com". (3) A acknowledges on the blog: "hey, got an email from you. What's the code word?" (4) B, using well-known hash "X9Y8z", says "Palomino" on the blog. (5) A, knowing that "iamreallyb@gmail.com" is long-time commenter B, emails "ok, let's talk" message from "iamreallya@gmail.com".

Note especially that "iamreallya@gmail.com" and "iamreallyb@gmail.com" should NOT be your usual emails for financial information, family contacts, and the like -- but are perfectly suitable for private and secure contact for most purposes.

There are several areas we've already visited and vetted that seem like they'd be quite nice. Eastern TN and western NC are among them.

Bare bones reporting of a shooting out of Taylor Michigan. Mother, daughter killed.

http://www.cbs12.com/news/top-stories/stories/vid_31835.shtml

Police have been investigating the relationship between the three. . . . had been staying with Watson and her boyfriend but had recently moved.

Investigators are still searching for a motive but witnesses and family members say that Obeshaw. . . had become mentally unstable and paranoid over the past year.

Posted by: Willy J. at December 06, 2015 05:23 AM (wHX4r)

As long as you're hanging on, you're not a loser, you're a survivor. Perspective can go a long way. Now all you have to do is work on the alcoholic part. It's not easy, but you can quit. The first thing you have to do is decide that it provides no benefit whatsoever, and that you absolutely must stop.

We always justify our bad habits, and that's why they linger as long as they do and cause so much damage. I used to tell myself that my smoking was a necessary crutch and good for my emotional well-being given that I had to constantly deal with stupid people. It wasn't, and my lungs are still paying for it. Statistically speaking, I've still got another 5 or more years until they've recovered.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 06, 2015 05:27 AM (EzgxV)

East TN is absolutely beautiful. The only thing that ever drove my family away from there was how it became impossible for my mother and father to find work during the height of the Affirmative Action era. I'd probably move there, if I could find work, and were I not satisfied with Texas.

748 736: Thanks. I'll try that method tomorrow or whenever I get the chance. I'd almost just forget about going to the trouble and requesting the other party to go through the trouble either, with no trust established. But, and I don't want to say anything, I just noticed something she is likely not aware of at all, and if I were her, I'd very much appreciate someone pulling me aside and telling me about it.

And if you knew what it was, you'd agree.

Again, thanks, and I'll try the "protocol".

There are several ways to measure time at a local level. Generally, they meter stored energy through an "escapement" -- which is a means of metering-out stored energy in a controlled fashion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escapement

Of course, there's also that the sharing of the information may outweigh the privacy of such sharing....so you could just blurt it out. You'd avoid going the private link route that way.

758 10 months ago I didn't think I had a drinking problem.Well yes I really did but I was moving through life just dandy. But apparently if you abuse your body sufficiently. You get chest pains if you quit., went to the doc but no result back then. Pretty sure I am doing bad shit to myself. But this is alcoholism it's a disease right. I have no control. I am typing this out not so much for help from others here as I am typing it to know I said it out load somewhere. I've been doing OK quitting for a week then starting then quitting for 2 weeks then starting I know I can solve this but am to weak to tell the people I should be talking to. Also If I don't solve it my kids and grand kids wont get to know me. Hell It's a reason they may not need but I do.

759 751. The information does almost rise to that level, actually. But it is something most people might not like blurted out. If it was actual social contact, and not online, it would be something you want your friends to hear about likely. Online, with anonymity, no problem, but this is still a community with people knowing each other via the pseudonyms/handles, and so might be just as sensitive.

On many of the online forums I've been a member of, there is a private messaging system, which would be most useful here. I could just zap her a PM and that would be that.
