Remembering Johnny 'Mike' Spann 15 Years Later

He was killed on November 25, 2001 during the Battle of Qala-i-Jangi when Taliban prisoners (including John Walker Lindh) gained access to weapons and attacked. He was the first American killed in Afghanistan after 9/11.

Vetted Refugees in America Try to Join ISIS

Reading the criminal complaint and underlying affidavit, I was struck by how "connected" the six men were to local schools and jobs. They were "connected" right up until the moment they weren't. The Star Tribune noted this aspect of the case in the article "Minneapolis men facing ISIL-linked terrorism charges belie stereotypes." I was also struck by the mysterious appearance of cash to pay for the travel each of the six planned to Syria.

In the case of Guled Omar, the travel expenses were to be defrayed in part by taxpayers. The affidavit reveals: "Bank records obtained show that OMAR withdrew $5,000 in cash from his federal educational financial aid debit card in the weeks leading up to his attempted departure." It's a striking fact I haven't seen noted or have overlooked in news of the charges.

20 Years Since Sammy Hagar Got His Wish

'Shockingly' the highways have not turned into the predicted bloodbath.

On November 29, 1995, President Clinton grudgingly signed a highway bill repealing the much-hated National Maximum Speed Limit. In 1973, President Nixon signed the NMSL into law in an effort to force people to save gas. This law allowed the federal government to withhold federal highway money from states that didn't drop their speed limit to 55 mph. Real-world fuel savings were negligible. Safety activists proclaimed that it saved a lot of lives, and would bring out charts showing that the highway fatality rate had dropped since the law was enacted. The starting point for said charts was when the law was enacted, and sure enough, the fatality rate decreased in the years after. Had they shown a chart going back decades, you would have seen that the fatality rate had been declining since the late 1940s.

Those Sweet Gentle Syrian Refugees

Who are all women and children and just like us.

When Syrian refugees were asked to list the greatest threat, 29 percent picked Iran, 22 percent picked Israel and 19 percent picked America. Only 10 percent viewed Islamic terrorism as a great threat.

By way of comparison, twice as many Iraqis see Islamic terrorism as a threat than Syrians do and slightly more Palestinian Arabs view Islamic terrorism as a threat than Syrians do. These are terrible numbers.

Thirty-seven percent of Syrian refugees oppose US airstrikes on ISIS. 33% oppose the objective of destroying ISIS.

Meanwhile Europe doubles down on their hope and virtue-signaling as a strategy.

Weslayan University Students Demand Campus Surveillance Bureaucracy

To monitor for 'microaggressions' and other bad-thoughts on the part of professors.

And VDH brings a little clear thinking to the upside down world of the modern campus:

Students need to decide whether they are ten or twenty. One cannot be both infantile and mature as the situation demands. If one in four women are truly sexually assaulted on campus, then why not end co-ed dorms, the incubator of date rape? Dress codes for both men and women might discourage callous sexuality and cruel hook-ups. In this regard, the treasured Middle Eastern Studies department or the local black Muslim mosque might offer some empirical advice about the separation of the sexes and proper female attire, in a nonjudgmental manner of course.

If African-American students want more segregated black safe spaces and theme houses, then stop blaming administrators, and demand that students be categorized by race and housed in dormitories accordingly. To remove the odor of apartheid and segregation, we could use Orwellian language to expand the idea of "theme" houses: the Africana Row, the European Village, the Asian Neighborhood, and on and on. Do we want "white meditation rooms" or "Asian sanctuary plazas" or "Latino reflection gardens"?

How strange that students damn frat predators on campus and racist attitudes that ignore disparate impact, then head to 1940s-like Saturday football games. Don't they know that statistically the football and basketball teams commit an inordinate percentage of campus sexual assaults, and hardly reflect proportional representation, while completely ignoring disparate impact?

Georgetown basketball and Missouri football refuse entirely to insist on racially diverse teams, and minority outreach and mentoring (Asian centers, Latino forwards, gay quarterbacks, female placekickers, etc.). Adults who want to change the world are not children who watch football on Saturdays and say nothing about the unapologetic sexism and racism on the field.

Meanwhile Purdue is experimenting with student loans based on a fixed percentage of post-graduation income.

Teacher: A student told me I 'couldn't understand because I was a white lady,' so I went home and cried

A teacher that can be intimidated by a know-nothing fifth grader simply lacks the self-confidence in her own knowledge and experience to be an effective teacher and should not be allowed to be in charge of young people. (thanks to JTT)

29 Public Schools ♥ Terrorism

A public school forcing children to recite the Lord's Prayer or write proselytizing sermons for Mormon missionaries would be condemned for violating the "separation of church and state". But in the minds of the Leftist who have a stranglehold on public educations, making students recite the Shahada isn't a violation of "separation of church and state" because the Constitution doesn't say anything about the "separation of mosque and state." Such logic probably explains why not only are children being forced to recite the Shahada, but to sing the praise of Islam... and apparently also terrorism.

60 Oh, and I'm being 100% honest with it being nearly the *exact* reason we homeschool.

See, Austin has a neat little system of trapping white kids in minority majority schools. In our case my son was bused across two highways to get to a school that was 80% illegal immigrants living in roach apartments and 20% poor suckers who got bused in. I didn't realize the situation when we moved in because the test scores were good. Anyway, in Austin you can't transfer to another school in the district if you are an ethnic minority at your home campus going to a campus where you would be an ethnic majority.

So if you're a white kid at a 98% hispanic school, as my son was, you're SOL. If you're an autistic white kid at that school, you'll spend your days waltzing the halls with a VP while the rest of your class learns English.

Anyway, he lasted a semester and then I pulled him the hell out and then we moved far, far away to the land of the sane.

Just want to underscore the point here that the ridiculous double nickel, which was signed in to law during a Republican administration, was repealed during the Clinton administration, after THREE SUCCESSIVE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL TERMS had gone by in the leadup to Clinton without a whisper of repeal.

Including two straight terms of the "Reagan Revolution" which had ostensibly meant to be all about dismantling intrusive big government.

Broke Obummer's idea of a "well hung man" is more likely to be found at a Chicago bath house, than the result of a battlefield tribunal.

Pity that the previous administration failed to administer due, fitting and timely justice, back when it was called for.

That started a very bad trend, as manifested by the likes of Bleaujob Bergdahl's being swapped for five muzzie goatfcukers.

A few adroitly employed firing squads or gallows would go far towards focusing certain soldiers as to the facts of their world.

I wouldn't go that high in a rating. They didn't have enough great tunes to get the tag, but this is subjective. They had a wonderful sound, though. I will give them this... they were memorable and the few great tunes were impressive enough to be included in a personal "soundtrack of the 70's". I appreciate them more now, than I did then.

81 "There is such a thing as a fifth grade social justice and English language arts teacher and it exists in Texas?"

Multiple responses: "But that's in AUSTIN."

Just pointing out that it's not just in Austin.

It wasn't in Austin where the mayor considered it within the scope of her authority to be formally demanding the texts of pastors' sermons to scrutinize them for politically incorrect content and subject them to prior restraint on speech. (Houston).

It wasn't in Austin where the city council decreed that you couldn't hold municipal employment or contract business with the city without signing on 100% to the entirety of the gay agenda. (San Antonio.)

It wasn't in Austin that the mayor said that he was more worried about armed white men than he was worried about Islamic jihadi terror. (Dallas.)

During WWI the British executed by firing squad ca. 300 soldiers for desertion in the face of the enemy (some of them just guys who got lost in the fog of battle, no doubt).
Three hundred soldiers ... in a four year war ... yeah, do the math. Roughly one every five days.

There are some funny misheard lyrics, like in CCR's "Bad Moon Rising", where the line "There's a bad Moon on the rise" is misheard as "There's a bathroom on the right."

Fogerty has been known to actually sing that line for kicks. There's some Youtube videos of him doing just that.

Sorry, but you don't get it. Square mileage is irrelevant. Probably 90+% of California - by area - is conservative. SF and LA (and to a lesser extent SD) dominate the voting. An electoral map of CA shows several blue (i.e., Red) cancers in a sea of red (i.e., anti-Red) counties. But that's enough.

I suspect a similar pattern holds in IL, WA, and NY. The cities are enough to swing the politics of the state (especially with a little voter fraud thrown in).

Sammy lives in Marin County just north of San Fran. Its nothing near 16 hours drive time down either I-5, 101 or even the PCH.

Its a stupid song and that line is the stupidest. Long stretches of both I-5 and 101 are racetracks if you drive them at the correct time of day/night.

And are we to understand you cant write a decent rock and roll song about how clogged freeways harsh the buzz of the modern outlaw??? C'mon!

What surprises me about TX politics is the number of counties in South Texas and along the river that still turn red. 60-70-80% Hispanic yet go red.

Dallas County, Travis County, Harris County, Bexar County, El Paso County all problems. The rest, not so much.

They don't understand Texas, and what's more they don't want to. They're like the WaPo idiots trying to psychoanalyze Trump's supporters.

Their path to victory is to get more Strausites to run as nominal Republicans who then push all the liberal crap once safely in office.

I certainly hope you're right, for all our sakes (since Texas is probably the last redoubt) but I suspect that at some point the hard left will push out the pansies and take off the gloves.
Consider how Obongo won the Democrat nomination: IIRC, he lost every primary election, but won every caucus[/i\]. The Reds had buses of Obongo supporters ready to pack every caucus, because a few dozen activists was more than enough to swing the vote. Then off to another caucus ...

That's how Reds operate. Read Ron Radosh's "Red Star Over Hollywood" for a graphic description of how the Party packed meetings with apparently unacquainted people who were all acting in concert to push a Red agenda. I saw the same thing - over and over again - in my time in the University of California.

That's the organizational skill and discipline we're up against. Logistical problems with phones and signs are an amateurs' mistakes. The hard left are not amateurs. They're highly organized, highly disciplined, and utterly committed to seizing power. Unfortunately, once they have power, all of that competence evaporates, and they look like Laurel and Hardy trying to paint out of the same bucket.

As disappointed as I am that Lindh wasn't hanged, I recognize it was probably the right decision on Bush's part. If he'd gone for treason charges, that prosecution would have provided a focal point for the hard left to use to mobilize opposition to everything else he was trying to do. They did that anyway, but a treason trial at home would be a GodMarx send to them.

Yep, that's another technique. For those who aren't familiar with them, Reds will argue incessantly, indefatigably, over the most trivial doctrinal points (think Judean People's Liberation Front vs. People's Liberation Front of Judea). And that's just between themselves. They use that trait against normal people to wear them down with long, boring "angels on a pinhead" type Marxist analyses.

They also will pack a random party meeting and then push for the election of new officers.

Years ago it happened here. A bunch of the far leftists showed up at Dem meeting that was concerning some minor issues. They demanded a vote on new officers, and the local officers said it wasn't on the agenda, so no. They then started holding an election and surprise, they won. State party said no you didn't, there was no election on the agenda, so no election.

These are the types that think just by demonstrating that they get to have things their way.

But, that means you should probably drive slower, which is a good idea anyway if you drive in winter conditions.

In 2008, there was a real question as to who actually had the most delegates to the Democrat convention. Hillary had gotten most of the "super Delegate" support, and won all of the primaries while Obama won the caucuses. Once the media tagged Obama as the frontrunner, that was it for Hillary because there was no way the Super Delegates would vote for the white candidate and piss off the black bloc that was very needed to win.

369 You can figure about 1 psi per 10 degrees F. The recommended inflation pressure is always *cold*. Tires heat up with running, some getting pretty hot indeed.

3-5psi variation between winter and summer is about normal. Always check tire pressure cold. What seems normal when hot after running may be below normal when cold.

Probably, but it is easier to just measure it, no? In point of fact, the change in pressure can be calculated pretty closely.

In practice, however, driving conditions will have an effect. Higher speeds = higher tire temperature = higher pressure. It is also true that higher inflation pressure will make for lower operating temperature, because less flexure.

well, yeah it is easier to measure. I was generally curious as to whether anyone had a rule of thumb. curious as well as to when everyone thinks it is best to inflate tires? is inflating when it is cool better than when it is warm? if you inflate in the cool am your tires will be overpressure in heat of day, if in heat of day then cool in evening. as noted, driving affects pressure as well. I am assuming manufacturers have factored all this in.

Fond a "rule of thumb" which says your pressure will change 2% for every 10F degrees.

I read somewhere goodyear was coming out with a self-monitoring and inflating tire.

391 Our Civil Servant always thinking of ...

A draft order now being considered says federal agencies "shall ... gradually increase the rate of basic pay of all SES employees" to ensure they are not paid less than subordinates. Potential SES candidates would be allowed to apply using resumes instead of requirements placing "undue burden on applicants" such as multiple essay-style narratives. Rotational assignments for senior leaders would increase, permitting them to serve in other federal agencies, with local, state and tribal governments, and in certain outside organizations "to improve talent development, mission delivery and collaboration."

Behind the scenes a new subcommittee of the President's Management Council would monitor implementation of the order, keep management practices current and identify obstacles to effective government management.

Increasing compensation is the first recommendation in the draft order and a top priority for the Senior Executives Association (SEA), which represents senior leaders. It has long complained about a system that can result in lower level employees with greater pay than executives who have more responsibility and stress.

Just think of RT/n as a contant, and temperature measured from absolute zero.

460 deg. Rankine is 0 deg F, with the degrees being the same for both. So, for example if the temperature is a difference between 72 deg F and freezing, it is a 40 deg Rankine difference, which would lead to an 8% decrease in temperature in absolute terms, and thus an 8% decrease in pressure.

Roughply speaking

That is what the ideal gas law works out to when using degrees F (or degrees Rankine), and consistant with the quick back-of-the-envelope calcualtion I did in comment 394.

I remember a tire gave me fits with a slow leak. Turned out to the damn valve stem. It wouldn't leak unless you pushed on it, which I why missed it.

Lindh's progressive parents, just like the late Adam Gadhan's parents, had no problems with them being racist, misogynist, anti American assholes so long as it was in the name of islam.

They both converted while in high school. If they had joined the klan they would have had their kid kidnapped and deprogrammed. And just like Rachel Corrie, they were dependent on the parents money. Gadhan's family did cut him off and cooperated with the FBI after 911, though.

439 So, speaking of late-night paranoia.....I have to wonder if the frenzy over mideast refugees might be because the Big Plan is to have the Iranians and Saudis glass each other.

It would make the current Administration just as loathsome (a double genocide), but in a more pro-American, pro-West sort-of way. Sort of like the joke about Star Trek: "There are Americans, Vulcans, blacks, Asians, Russians, and Scots on the bridge.....but why is there nobody from the Middle East?" "Duh, 'cause it's in the future."

What if the US (which is nearly self-supporting in hydrocarbons these days) and Russia (which exports hydrocarbons) decided that the MidEast had been a PITA for too long.....and decided that Islam could be "solved" with clean "colonial" hands if the Sunnis nuked the Shiites and the Shiites nuked the Sunnis -- and have been working toward this for about a decade? This goal -- and the incredibly fumbled execution of same -- might explain a lot.

444 No one got to Paul Ryan, Ryan like Borhner and McConnel are Democrats masquerading as conservatives.

In fact, conservatism as practiced by most of the GOP is simply a con.

Actual conservative governance is non-existent for the most part.

The world we inhabit has been put in place and designed by the democrat party over the many decades they have held power and even when they don't hold power.

Just look at the fact that the GOP has majorities in both the house and senate that they haven't had in 80 years and they are completely powerless to stop anything the President or the DEmocrats want to do.

Harry Reid has said the recent refugee bill passed in the house will not even be allowed to be voted on.

The reason they are so cranky and angry is that western men have let them down by treating them as human beings.

Illegals get car insurance? That's a new one on me!

Back when I lived in CA, I was part of two accidents caused by illegals wandering the roads in their rusty rides, and in neither case did said non-English-speaking persons have anything like insurance. The deal was signed in the US by means of the Defense Ministry's delegation there and with the presence of the IAF as well.

The maintenance deal involves hundreds of millions of dollars and will go into force on January 1, 2016. It will make sure that at any given point in time, the IAF will have a set number of working engines at its disposal, for the jet fighters. Pratt & Whitney will be fully responsible for the maintenance, including logistics forecasting, management, upgrades and supply of spare parts.

536 13-year-old Israeli student from a kibbutz in northern Israel was turned down by a Jewish professor at the United Kingdom's Cambridge University after reaching out for help on a school assignment.

Shachar Rabinovitz, a horse enthusiast, sent out an e-mail to Dr. Marsha Levine, the Cambridge educated professor and researcher who is an expert on the history of the domestication of horses, asking for assistance on an assignment relevant to Levine's field.

Rabinovitz led her e-mail with, "I'm from Israel," before explaining the nature of her queries.

"I'm doing an assessment for school about horses, and it will be great if you can answer a few questions that I will ask," wrote the girl.

Yet instead of receiving answers to her questions, Rabinovitz was faced with criticism over the plight of Palestinians in Israel.

"I'll answer your questions when there is peace and justice for Palestinians in Palestine," the professor wrote.

Levine explained that she is a member of the organization Jews for Justice for Palestinians, and a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

"You might be a child, but if you are old enough to write to me, you are old enough to learn about Israeli history and how it has impacted on the lives of Palestinian people," Levine told the girl.

Rather than provide Rabinovitz with information on horses, the Cambridge professor provided the girl with a link to the pro-Palestinian organization's website, urging the girl to educate herself on the history of the Palestinian people.

Okay. I'll try to keep my translator microbes active to 11 and agree with the sentiment, whatever the phrasing.

Decades ago, the OK GOP was much like the national party today. Not interested in winning or influencing, just raking in the bucks the #2 party gets.

When my dad was made chairman of the state party, he had a big hand in turning things around, and getting the first Republican governor since statehood elected. The party has been fer realz ever since. I was young, but I remember him telling me how he had to buck the Establishment to accomplish that.

The GOP may be beyond salvation, as some here think, but its reformation is all I've got for now, unless some viable 3rd party comes along. So we here in the heart of America keep voting in good folks, or trying to, despite their lack of power in D.C. and the RINO factions locally.

So, that's where I'm coming from, FTR.

548 Here in NC, one must provide proof of insurance in order to get an NCDL every four or five years. Then, annually, must again prove insurance when registering your vehicle. (I ran into a problem once when I was driving company vehicle and did not have a vehicle personally insured.)

From our friends at WRAL...
>When a bill that would allow immigrants in
the United States illegally to obtain limited driving privileges
cleared the House Finance Committee Tuesday morning, Gregorio Morales
and Carmen Rodriguez were among the folks sitting in the back of the
room smiling.
Morales,
who is originally from Mexico, has lived in the United States for 17
years seven of those in North Carolina and would be one of the
people lining up for the new identity cards if House Bill 328 becomes
law.

I
am a small-business owner. I have a landscape company," Morales said
shortly after the vote. He and his five employees would all benefit from
the bill, he said.

When you're driving without a license, you always feel fear, he said.

Rodriguez
said she routinely drives without a license and without insurance to
get her three children to school and herself to a job.

I drive with fear. My kids are scared of police officers, Rodriguez said through an interpreter.<So many things wrong here^^^^Lawmakers rationale was that was the only way amigos would consider getting insurance.

Now, I'm sure our friends from the south go to the General, get a month's worth of insurance obtain their license and then make no more payments.

We're screwed.
