5 Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, November 25, 2015. On this day in 1947 the Hollywood Ten were blacklisted by Hollywood movie studios. They were also cited for contempt of congress and were sentenced to 6 months to a year in jail. They were held in contempt because they refused to admit they were communists, which was later born out in other testimony. In fact, according to research by Ann Coulter for her book Hollywood was literally overrun with communists at the time. Now they are just called the Democrat Party.

18 In response to a threat from House Science Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Tex.) to subpoena Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration told Smith in a letter Friday that her staff will not be influenced by political interference.

I have not or will not allow anyone to manipulate the science or coerce the scientists who work for me, Administrator Kathryn Sullivan wrote.

Which means that she and her minions will do all the manipulation. They have already been caught red-handed multiple times manipulating data. Which is why she will not answer the subpoena. It is either admit illegal activities or fall for a perjury trap. I have some news for her, courts have ruled many times that lawmakers can subpoena administration officials and they have to respond.

50 In 1492, Christopher Columbus dropped the Pilgrims off at Plymouth Rock in his ships, El Nino, The Pinto and the Ave Maria. The Pilgrims were fleeing Europe because they were religious and religion is bad.

The Pilgrims met a friendly Native American named Squanto and his sister Pocahantas, and they showed the Pilgrims how to bury dead fish near their corn, and after a while they would dig up the dead fish and eat it with the corn. This was called "maze. Most people don't eat maze any more and that is a good thing because it sounds bad to eat.

Pocahantas left on a trip with Lewis and Clark to discover the Pacific Ocean, and before they left the Pilgrims and the Native Americans held a big feast and ate lots of maze.

The Pilgrims later vanished after carving some words on a tree. No one knows where they went or what the words meant. President Benjamin Franklin honored the Pilgrims with the Thanksgiving holiday to thank the Pilgrims for inventing the buckle.

The End.

In longbow/crossbow news news:

Probably heard that the ballot challenge in New Hampshire against Trump by a GOPe hack was shot down yesterday, but there was also this:

Two complaints were also filed against Cruz. The first one challenged whether the GOP presidential hopeful was a "natural born citizen", citing that he was born in Calgary, Canada.

The second alleged that Cruz and Rubio didnt have at least one parent who was a U.S. citizen. Rubios parents were born in Cuba and immigrated to the United States in 1956. The commission dismissed both complaints and voted to allow those candidates to be placed on the GOP ballot.

81 Pilgrims were mainly city folk. According to the historian David Hackett Fischer, Puritanism was centered around London and East Anglia, especially Cambridge and they tended to be educated professionals and tradesmen (blacksmiths, etc) No coincidence that these are the people who went on to found Harvard and Yale (as training institutions for clergy - my how far we have fallen).

Admirable people in many ways - but you can understand why they would feel overwhelmed by the wilderness. It looked like nothing they had experienced in England or Holland. The much colder climate of NE didn't help either.

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.":

The Canadian Government clarified its plans on Monday to accept 25,000 Syrian refugees by December 31 and offered some details about their plans to try and make that happen. Among the details: gay men will be included while single straight men probably wont.

Security concerns over extremists potentially slipping in to Canada mean the Liberal government will likely exclude unaccompanied males from its planned resettlement of thousands of refugees. But gay men will be among the Syrian refugees the government is willing to bring in under a plan that will otherwise welcome primarily women, children and families.

The rationale is that if Columbus Day commemorates genocide and if Thanksgiving commemorates genocide and if Christmas commemorates genocide, then what about New Year's Day? I mean, the years are based on Christianity, so isn't calling the upcoming year "2016" on a moral par as taking part ex post facto to the atrocities of the Crusades?

164 @132 Damn Colin. My experience has been that things have gotten pretty bad by the time you jump off a bulldozer. In yon olden times before 'ROPS' you'd bail if she was going over -- but it takes kind of a lot to tip a dozer over. The Seabees sat tight when under Japanese fire -- just turned the blade toward the Arisakas (No, I was not with them, but I worked with some guys who were).

Was the bulldozer sinking in a swamp? Aflame? Being repossessed?

Modern safe seat-belted bulldozers have nice, form-fitting seats. We had an Allis that had a flat upholstered board fully three feet wide. I used to think that the operators gradually grew into them.

172 The Russian Air Force base in Latakia will be reinforced with S-400 SAM system, which will soon be deployed there, Russia's Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Wednesday.

News site RT reported that Shoigu said at a Defense Ministry meeting, that the S-400 "will be deployed on Khmeimim airbase in Syria."

The S-400, Russia's most advanced anti-aircraft defense system, is as an upgrade of the S-300 Growler family, designed and developed by Almaz Antei.

The S-400 uses long- and medium-range missiles that can hit aerial targets at ranges up to 400 kilometers, making it capable of striking targets in Israel as well. It can hit tactical and strategic aircraft as well as ballistic and cruise missiles. The S-400 can bring down airplanes at up to 90,000 feet - more than double the height of a cruising commercial airliner. No less than 300 targets can be tracked simultaneously by the radar complex of the S-400, which sports six anti-aircraft missile launchers.

The corries lost the last appeal. Even their own damn expert witness testified that there was no way the driver could see her. It was only the ISM brats who were off to the side and at least 50 feet away who claimed the driver saw her. How? How would they know what he could see or not see. They were liars. The case shd have been thrown out of court earlier but Israel gave them a full and undeserved hearing.

184 Since this is an open thread, I'm going off on a tangent:

Stop Asking Me "How was our service? Your voice matters."

This is why we never want to give our name or email address to anybody. Ever. And when you have to, like when you stay at a hotel, they machine gun you with "kindness" which is really just marketing.

Tell us about your stay!

Before you leave, if there's anything that would make you give us anything less than a perfect score, please tell us and we'll fix it!

You are going to receive a survey - I'd really appreciate a perfect score. Anything less and I get in trouble...

Look, I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but there are only so many hours in a day. There's also the issue of my privacy. There's also the issue that Most Places Don't Warrant Perfect Scores. Most places are 4 out of 5, most of the time - and that's great. If they gave 10 stars I'd use 9, which would be even better, but a perfect score? C'mon.

I give them sometimes, when there's really something special, but if you are just doing your job - and it's fair to ask that you just do your job, and I appreciate that you are just doing your job - then it's an 85 or 90.

Better yet: I'll tell you if something's wrong. Otherwise you'll know if I like you if I come back.

I wouldn't call this a pet peeve, but it's a peeve nonetheless.

Stop asking me if "We're OK?" It's like having a clingy girlfriend...

187 Russians, at least, understand the notion of "nations" and "borders," even if they violate them. Their (and our) bold allies in the region, though, clearly do not. Between the one-worldiness of The Prophet and the hangover of the Ottomans, for whom everything was a province and provinces were pretty flexible, all our noble Westphalian concepts are lost on them. Separation of church and state is a problematic issue for them. Separation of one state from another, moot.

249 The first trailer for Captain America: Civil War is here.

Its some time after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and the world thinks superheroes need some kind of supervision. Iron Man agrees, Captain America does not, and that divides the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe right down the middle.

304 Students of Youngstown State in Ohio awoke to a disturbing message painted a rock that is normally used for painting school pride and other uplifting images.

The painting features the ISIS flag along with a message that says, 'We are coming'.

Another message reads, 'France deserves destruction,' along with an upside down Eiffel Tower.

Yet another part of the rock reads, 'YSU Supports ISIS'.

Students and residents took to social media to voice their displeasure with the painting (which was quickly removed by painting over it).

376 The ONT had this quote: "These people will produce nothing. They will create no great art, write no symphonies, conjure no novels that speak across the decades, sculpt nothing of beauty."

While the overall point is good, the example is, to me, an all too common concession to the left. Why, when listing great accomplishments, do we always hear about great poets and sculptors, when we should be talking about the great scientists and engineers that will get us to new worlds, develop foods to more easily feed humanity, and cure horrible diseases. Art is an indulgence, granted by a society that becomes successful due to other, greater accomplishments. I'll trade "The Raven" for a cure for diabetes any day, or even "David" for safe, effective flight within our solar system.

377 It's it's any consolation the guy who wrote about meditation being a powerful force against ISIS got pounded by several people in the replies.

I do think prayer can be a force against ISIS through God' answering action but that's not the same as meditation. I don't get a sense that the journalists meditation is connected with God in any way-just sort of Eastern sort of practice-more about him and how he feels than any higher power.

I also think carnal warfare is called for-whether than means bombing them or cutting off their means of financial support or both.

384 Meditation isn't fixing this flawed logic:

Unbelievably, we have seen some of the worst of human nature on display since the Paris attacks, along with some of the best. Consciously-or-unconsciously-racist politicians, either cynically exploiting xenophobia or manifesting it themselves, have called for some of ISIS's most devastated victims --- innocent civilians in Syria --- to be victimized again, denied shelter in a country that once lifted up a lamp beside the golden door.

Nope - ISIS's most devastated victims are long gone after being burned alive, drowned, beheaded (and their head used as a soccer ball), crucified, gang raped and beaten, and on and on.

And keeping ISIS's deed in mind, saying that people who don't want Syrian refugees are displaying "some of the worst of human nature" really, REALLY misses the point.

404 Likening turning away refugees to what ISIS does is mind-blowing. Same goes for pretending coming to America is the *only* option.

How about meditating on/lobbying for them to go to a nearby Muslim country where they will feel much more at home? When I pray I keep my requests open-ended instead of asking for the solution that I think is best. Does meditation work differently?
