Maybe next time do the arrests when you hear the Intel, before the attack.

Goldie Hawn turns 70.

The actress, producer, and director has stared in 29 films and four television shows throughout her acting career. Hawn was born on Nov. 21, 1945, in Washington, D.C. Before the actress became known for her signature role as the silly blond and blue-eyed regular on the show "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In," she studied dance and even taught dance classes at the age of 19.

70 FenelonSpoke, I have used sonic pest machines successfully. You should place one near an active area, like a nest, or where they've been chewing stuff. Put it in place mid-gay, then come back twenty four hours later. Remove the sonic blaster, then install cut hardware cloth (heavy gauge metal screen, usually 1/2" squares) over all entry points. Problem solved.

If you block it off when she is in there she will make another way out.

104 So Jared Leto (whoever that is) reportedly said at the American Music Awards that we should welcome immigrants because Steve Jobs' and Barack Obama's parents were immigrants.

Uh, not really. Jobs' biological father, whom he only met once, was a Syrian, but Jobs' parents (i.e., the couple who adopted Steve Jobs as a baby and raised him and educated him, etc.) were Americans.

And Barack Obama (may the Ages curse his name) was the son of an American and a Kenyan exchange student, who came here for a few years -- supposedly to study, not to knock-up teenage American girls -- and then returned to Kenya (where he lived a life of scandal and debauchery as a corrupt, womanizing drunkard, before finally dying in a drunk driving accident that he caused).

If Jared Leto wants to make a persuasive argument for allowing more immigration from Third World Muslim countries, he's going to need to come up with some more compelling examples than those two.

123 WASHINGTON - A number of anti-Israeli resolutions are expected to pass on Monday at the United Nations ahead of next week's anniversary of the 1947 UN vote to partition the British Mandate of Palestine into two states.

Twenty resolutions are to be proposed at the meeting, including ones calling for the Palestinian right of return, placing responsibility for terror on Israel while disregarding the terrorism in Israel in recent weeks, and accusing Israel of changing the status quo at the Temple Mount compound.

125 My local paper-which has some interesting stories and does the "police blotter" section in a humorous way, is also left leaning. They have a poll on their website, and these are the questions:

Would you feel safer if a neighbor owned a gun?

Yes

No

O.K. This is NJ-no conceal/carry. Lots of people don't have guns although more do in the rural parts of the state.

I thought it was a stupid question. I don't mind if my neighbor whats to protect his family with a gun. I don't think he has anything against me or that he's going to flip out and come murder me.

So I would say "His owning a gun makes me feel neither safe or unsafe." That wasn't an option for answering the question, however,

They do these snippets of history during commercial breaks.

They are pretty neat actually and unabashedly patriotic. Good stuff about America! What a concept.

They had a piece about Calvin Coolidge's Thanksgiving proclamation. Beautiful. That was American values. Not this Obama mean girl stuff. Google it.

Also, they aren't CNN or Fox. Good and bad. They have lots of news in a half hour block but it repeats and they don't get new stories in even 12 hours later even when there is significant news. Like they didn't have the Brussels stuff last night. They don't have much foreign reporting I think they use stringers.

But they do get great interviews. Because the interviewers are not the story and they ask good questions and let you hear the answers v

129 Rene,onSpike,
If the problem has started recently, there are no babies yet, most likely. You can find the nest if babies are present, by looking for roughed up insulation or mounded ares in insulation. If babies are present, they won't have eyes open, and won't be mobile, it's easy to remove them by grabbing up a small bundle of insulation with them in it, and taking them out of the house. The nest and surrounds will have been used as their bathroom, so def wear gloves (!) From there, again, if there are babies, you can take them to an animal shelter, or dispose of as you see fit...

135 Israeli defense electronics developer Elbit Systems has successfully completed a trial of its protection system against shoulder launched missiles.

Elbit systems' MUSIC family of Directed Infrared Countermeasure (DIRCM) systems, integrated with the advanced Passive Airborne Warning System (PAWS) IR based missile warning system, was successfully demonstrated on an Airbus C295 aircraft, it was reported Monday.

The demonstration took place in October, during a flight test at a Bundeswehr test site in Meppen, Germany.

During the tests, conducted by a multi-national NATO team, a C295 aircraft with an operationally installed Elbit EW self-protection suite, consisting of the DIRCM system and the PAWS, "successfully demonstrated the capability to detect, acquire, track and jam the trial test equipment on the ground, under extreme conditions," according to the report.

The initial assessment of the results indicated that the system has the capability to successfully jam MANPADS (infra- red, ground to air heat seeking Man-Portable Missiles) from the first, second and third generation, using generic NATO jam codes.

The demonstration was a joint project of Elbit Systems and Airbus Defense & Space (Spain). It was widely supported by the Israeli Ministry of Defense, the Spanish Air Force and NAFAG ACG3 SG/2 (NATO Air Forces Armaments Group, Air Capability Group 3, Sub Group 2), which is the NATO group responsible for the development and validation of air platform protection solutions.

The decree, issued on the same day as Putin arrived in Iran on an official visit, said Russian firms were now authorized to export hardware and to provide financial and technical advice to help Iran with three specific tasks.

148 To Fenelon in re squirrels

Get a havahart trap and a large plastic bin (big enough to hold the trap horizontally on the bottom)

Bait the trap with organic peanut butter on the bottom of the bait bar

Set the trap on the lawn near where they are getting into your house

Fill the bin with water to a depth of a foot or so, deep enough to cover the trap.

When you catch a squirrel in the trap (and it make a few tries before you do), put the trap in the bin for about 1 minute, then dispose of the squirrel in a plastic bag in the garbage.

You usually need to trap 3-4 to get rid of a family.

You then will need a ladder to check around your eaves and block up the entrances they've created and remove overhanging branches, too.

Keep us posted on your progress!

150 "His owning a gun makes me feel neither safe or unsafe." Honest answer.

Years ago, an aspiring slumlord Section-8'ed a known problem-child into the little house next door. He made a lot of friends in his home town, 5 miles away, by getting him the hell out of there. On this end, not so much, but we "had to take it." Guy had a reputation for not knowing when to end his fist-fights. Had issues.

One time somebody used him as an example. "Would you want X over there to get a gun?" I thought that over for a minute, and had to say, "You mean I have to sit here all day knowing that he's a probable killer, knowing that he's said he will kill me, and my big defense is that he can't legally buy a new gun?" Won that argument.

I remember seeing the videos of Palestinians dancing and ululating in the street and handing out candy to celebrate the 9/11 murders. But I also remember reading an article (it was in a MSM mag, like Time or Newsweek) about how Egyptians were also "quietly" celebrating. They were as happy about 9/11 as the Palis, but they were afraid that if they were too open about it, they might lose some of that sweet multi-billion-dollar aid package they get from the U.S. each year, so they did their celebrations at private parties, and quietly congratulated each other in their workplaces for their great "victory" over the American devil.

Have a feeling there was quite a lot of that going on, all over the Muslim world.

181 DIRCMs would be great, but remember the Airline CFO's fought spending the cash required to install smoke detectors in the cargo holds of passenger jets for 15 years. Took a second, directly attributable crash with multiple fatalities to get the FAA to overrule them.

So, beyond El Al and Air Force specials, I wouldn't be counting on seeing DIRCMs on your next flight -- at least not until after 3 or so shoot downs.

The FAA has earned the Tombstone Agency moniker.

::: barbara billingsley :::

"Oh, stewardess? I speak AvLeak."

Translated from military aerospace acronyms, here's what is going on. The technology to detect an incoming shoulder-fired antiaircraft missile with an infrared seeker head, and jam it with a modulated infrared beam, has been around for a while now. And deployed on certain military platforms (including El Al civilian passenger aircraft on routes judged risky).

But the capability comes at a high price point. Looks as though Elbit are trying to push it down the Moore's Law curve to where it becomes practical to put it on more aircraft than is now the case.

Two caveats: Elbit were once a legendarily capable technology firm, but I have caught disquieting notes recently that suggest their skills are slipping relative to what they once were. Also, the technology of shoulder fired missiles is evolving very rapidly, so classic infrared seekers (that go back fifty years now) are only part of the threat picture. Cheap seekers in other parts of the spectrum exist now, are proliferating, and are going to be harder to defeat.

218 "Meanwhile, why the hell did we lose that governor election in Louisiana?"

There's a possibly apocryphal quote from Harold MacMillan, when asked about the biggest challenge of governance, saying "Events, dear boy, events."

The event in Loozyana was the collapse in oil and gas prices.

When Jindal came in, the state had a nondiversified economy coupled too closely to the fortunes of oil and gas, and had plenty of graft and inefficiency. He said he would fix all of this. Sadly, he was not able to deliver on the promise. Especially not on economic diversification.

So LA got the one-two punch of public budget cuts (in a state where lots of people had been accustomed going back to the Kingfish to feeding at the public trough) and then falling public revenue because oil and gas prices crashed.

People tend to punish the party in power during bad economic times. Vitter's party and Jindal's party was the party in power in the Governor's mansion.

Other stuff was in play such as the Vitter zipper trouble, and his bitchy way of handling Republican critics thereof, but really overall that one looks like a textbook pocketbook election.

260 Re: not "giving in to fear."

F*ck that. Seriously, I want to punch people in the mouth when they say that. First off, we all live our lives in a state (healthy or un-) of fear about various things; that's why we take various precautions.

If you chose not to "give into fear" about everything in your life, you'd drink milk way past its expiration, you'd eat raw meats, wouldn't wear your seat-belt, and a whole host of things we do every day. Yet none of this is called "giving into fear," it is called "common f*cking sense."

Well, CFS says that something on the order of half of all Mohammedans (world-wide) believe that violent, terroristic jihad is required, sanctioned, or at least allowed by their demonic book, and that it is therefore not fear to look askance at anyone claiming such as his or her religion.

CFS says that ISIS has established a capitol and is in the process of establishing borders, which makes them a State, not an "organization" (note I don't dispute the qualifier: "terrorist"), and that when another State has sworn your destruction the correct response is not to pretend like they don't exist, but to smash them - brutally and quickly - such that they no longer have the ability to threaten you anymore.

Indeed, it is precisely those who say not to "give into fear," who are giving into fear - the wimpy geek's fear of the lunchroom bully - don't fight, don't tell anyone, and try just to pretend that he'll go away.

262 re: jobs, I have to say I got really lucky.

I was at my last job for 10 years, when we suddenly had a change of general manager. The new GM thought my position could be done away with and melded into other employees' responsibilities. So, I was toast. The only reason he didn't can me immediately was because they were in the middle of a systems overhaul. But my days were very numbered and I and everyone else knew it.

Just as I was about to start seriously working my network, I got a call out of the blue from the multi-millionaire co-owner of the company I had worked for before. He had retired to Florida with his millions, but decided to get back in the game with a very innovative new venture.

I'm still surprised that he still had my cell number after a decade. He needed people he knew and trusted, who are dependable and self-reliant, as this venture involves mostly work-from-home and will soon be 100% work from home. That's me to a tee. I'm just glad he thought of me. Loving it so far.

I disagree completely.

You are conflating fear with rational risk assessment. I have no fear of automobile accident injury. I have evaluated the risk and have decided that it makes logical sense to wear my seat belt. I don't fear food-borne illness, but I am aware of its unpleasantness and risk, and modify my behavior accordingly.

Fear of injury or death from terrorist action is based primarily on our inability to assess the risk, because it is impossible. Thus the fear. We have no rational basis on which to calculate whether we have a significant chance of being blown up in a bus on the way to work, or shot while shopping at the mall. All we know is that the odds are greater than zero and less than certain.

If the question is "Can ISIS defeat the U.S.", the answer has to be yes.

If history teaches us anything, it's that size and technological ability doesn't really matter. If you have one force that follows a set of "rules" and an opposing force that doesn't, the one who doesn't follow rules will win.

Every time.

Line the British troops in the open during the Revolutionary War and bang out your battle orders on drums, then watch what a bunch of undisciplined farmers can do from behind rocks and trees.

Damn ungentlemanly of those farmers. But effective.

Any time you have people who fighting for an idea and are willing to die for it, no matter how stupid the cause, you better take it seriously. If you worry about how the enemy or anyone else will think of you in your tactics, you're destined to lose.

288 I disagree completely.

That's okay, agreement isn't compulsory. Yet.

You are conflating fear with rational risk assessment.

A little, and on purpose. All of that "rational risk assessment" is based, at its core, on fear. Not "terror" or even irrational fear, but fully justified fear (or acknowledgement, if you prefer) of the possible negative consequences.

My point was specifically about TFG's call "not to give in to fear." His unspoken premise is that fear (either in general, or specifically about Mohammedan terror) is not rational or justified - that we could simply ignore them and they'd go away. I was specifically saying that such a stance - ignore them and they'll go away - is exactly the kind of thing the wimpy, geeky kid tells himself (for a variety of reasons) to deal with his very rational and justified fear of the school bully, and just as wrong.

We should, indeed, be afraid of Mohammedan terror. Mohammedanism is an evil death cult. If you're not afraid of that to some degree, however minor, you're the one who is not rational (not *you* you, but you know what I mean). And that fear should then lead - as fear of food-borne illness and fear of automobile accident once did - to rational assessment of the threat and risk posed, and to possible ways to mitigate, if not completely eliminate, that risk.

No, I was just trying to be clear that I was assailing TFG's lack of logic.

I would also suggest that terrorism can be assessed, or could be if the government were honest. Surely it is easier to assess the risk of, for instance, food-borne illness, but it's not impossible to assess the risk of terror attacks.

Also, the ability to assess the risk of food-borne illness is relatively recent (Louis Pasteur, speaking of the French). Before that, people generally didn't understand why their food would make them ill, they just knew that it might.

I assert that we're kind of at that stage with Mohammedan terror. Too many refuse to acknowledge that the problem is Mohammedanism, and so the assessment of the risk is much more difficult than it should be. I believe that if we (that is: Western governments) were more honest about the actual source of the problem (Mohammedanism is an evil death cult), it would make such assessment much easier.

As an example - in the Cold War, Americans (especially those near military targets) lived in fear of the Russians. As time went on and our assessments got better, we lived in less "fear," but still took precautions- but those precautions were still rooted in (rational, justified) fear.

It is only in recent years as we have truly forgotten our fear of Russia that they have once again emerged as a credible threat. Had we kept our healthy precautions in place (missile defense, etc.), Russia would not be the resurgent power it is today.

Similarly, if one day everyone forgot that we cook food so we won't get ill - if they every completely lost their "fear" of food-borne illness - then I would expect incidents of food-borne illness to rise. That is, in one sense we no longer fear food-borne illness, because we know how to combat it (clean and cook your food). But that very cleaning and cooking is rooted in a healthy fear (or "respect" if you prefer) of food-borne illness. If I do not fear something, if I don't think something bad could happen, then I make no moves to protect myself.

I find it necessary to note that I am here using "fear" in its most basic, technical definition, and very specifically noting that fear can be rational, reasonable, and justified. I think you already understand my usage, but it's good to be clear.

327 I was working the Desk for the LA race and was surprised how quickly they called it. All we had at that point were the early results, with most parishes showing less than 1% reporting.

Returns were not reported until the polls had closed. It was obvious to me, from my fire station voting location, we were in deep trouble.

There are few Allan West type voters here...

332 Wish me luck, Horde, I'm getting my gallbladder yanked out today.
Posted by: Joncelli at November 23, 2015 06:25 AM (4ZwPI)

Prayers for you Joncelli, that the anesthesia would be easy on you, that the surgery goes smoothly, and that you would have an easy adjustment to living life without a gallbladder.

Mrs. Hobbit had her gallbladder removed about 6 years ago, and she was home about an hour after she left recovery. She didn't need any pain medication (though she got the prescription) and she was back to normal after a few days' rest.

Her only restriction was that she couldn't lift anything over 10 pounds or so for about a month.

Blessings to you, Joncelli.

You can also catch them in traps and drive them to a park or wooded area 10 miles away and let them go.

334 To Michael the Hobbit -

My wife tried that twice, and they came back. We are not suffering from a shortage of them in my neighborhood; yours may be different...
