Quote of the Day I

Let's be clear: Islam is not our adversary. Muslims are peaceful and tolerant people and have nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism.

-- Hillary Clinton in a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations today

Quote of the Day II - Restraint Edition

"French police on Wednesday in their raid of an apartment in north Paris fired no less than 5,000 bullets, leading many in Israel to question the double standard of the West demanding Israel show 'restraint' in the face of terror. Reportedly 110 officers took part in the raid on an apartment in the suburb of St. Denis, where the Islamic State (ISIS) mastermind of Saturday's lethal attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, was believed to be hiding out."

Quote of the Day III

Saint-Denis is one of France's most historic places. French kings were crowned and buried through the centuries in its famed basilica, a majestic Gothic church that towers over the area. Today the district is home to a vibrant and very ethnically diverse population and sees sporadic tension between police and violent youths.

-- From an AP report on the Paris raid on the terrorists' hideout

Quote of the Day IV

The generals who won World War II would start by leveling Raqqa, the ISIS caliphate's capital. Civilians would die, but those remaining in Raqqa have embraced ISIS, as Germans did Hitler. The jihadis must be crushed. Start with their "Berlin."

Kill ten thousand, save a million.

Unthinkable? Fine. We lose.

-- Ralph Peters

Quote of the Day V

See, a lot of us conservatives walk around in a reassuring trance believing that people like and want small government. Most people don't. At most, they like and want small government for other people. Farmers like farm subsidies, defense-contractor employees like big spending by the Pentagon, most senior citizens explode at the slightest mention of cuts to Social Security or Medicare. Most self-identified conservatives not only don't fight for smaller government, they fight against it when it personally impacts them. And then they turn around and complain that lawmakers never manage to reduce the size of government.

-- Jim Geraghty

He had an EU passport but since he was already on the wanted list for a shootout with Belgian police, it's believed he snuck back into the EU from Syria posing as a refugee.

Officer May I Suggest You Use Your Waterboard

On November 5, nine days before the terrorist attacks on Paris, a 51-year old Montenegrin was stopped on an autobahn by German police. The officers found a revolver in the man's glove compartment and continued searching the car. They discovered that the vehicle had been professionally modified to create secret compartments for weapons. The cache reportedly included eight AK-47s, two pistols, two hand grenades, fuses, detonators and a half pound of TNT. The man had driven from Montenegro through Croatia, Slovenia and Austria before being stopped in Germany. The GPS in his car was set for Paris.

Since his arrest, the man reportedly has said nothing. French intelligence officials have now arrived in Germany to question him. They are a little late, unfortunately.

The police also found several Parisian telephone numbers and addresses in the car.

Ooh This is Going to Be Soooo #Problematic

"Information security is an endeavor that is frequently described in terms of war," writes Lysa Myers. "But what would the gender balance of this industry be like if we used more terms from other disciplines?" Just 14 percent of U.S. federal government personnel in cybersecurity specialties are women, a number startlingly close to the 14.5 percent of active duty military members who are women (at least as of 2013). By comparison, women are well represented in other STEM fields: "As of 2011, women earn 60 percent of bachelor-level biology degrees. Women also earn between 40 and 50 percent of chemistry, mathematics and statistics, and Earth sciences undergraduate degrees," writes Myers. Why the difference? Myers points to a comment from someone who taught a GenCyber camp for girls: "He found that one effective way to get girls to feel passionate about security was to create an emotional connection with the subject: e.g. the shock and distress of seeing your drone hacked or your password exposed," writes Myers.

When You're Rich (or Poor) Enough, You Can Live Okay Pretty Much Anywhere

California has a statewide variation on the Manhattan problem: It's an attractive place to live if you're too rich to care or too poor to care, but it's pretty rough if you're in the middle, where you have to care. The fact that San Francisco is rich doesn't tell you much more about the progressive model of governance than the fact that Tribeca is rich does. It's a relatively small enclave where the average home costs north of $1 million. Though I've never understood the allure of San Francisco (I'm more of a Los Angeles kind of guy), it's obviously an enormously attractive place to a great many very wealthy people from all over the world. Hurray for them. But to Senator Paul's point, the challenge before us isn't making the country a great place to live if you're a billionaire; everywhere's potentially pretty nice if you're a billionaire. But if you're a family of four earning $60,000 a year, you're probably going to be happier and more secure in Oklahoma City than in San Jose.

Geraghty is absolutely right here. Its a source of constant frustration for me, the inconsistency of conservatism. Too often people cry "there ought to be a law" instead of "what can I do?" Instead of seeing opportunity in problems or a challenge, people cry for government help. They're all for small government in theory but come up with a reason why programs and spending ought to stay in place.

I'm all for small government but don't touch my social security/medicare/school grants/highway funds etc etc etc. Its infuriating because it proves that these people have no philosophical allegiance to the constitution or small government, just annoyance at when it bothers them or when other people get goodies they aren't.

It doesn't matter if the reasons are true.

Southern California used to be hardcore right. Outside of the central part of L.A. City, the suburbs and the rest of L.A. County were very Republican. Heck, Bob Dornan used to get elected in West L.A.

L.A. started to drift Left in the 60's and moreso when Bradley was elected. Even then Republicans could be elected well into the '90's to both the city and the county. In 1994, when Prop. 187 was on the ballot, Gov. Wilson easily won L.A. County.

Outside of L.A., only the core of San Bernardino elected a Dem Congressman. San Diego was pure GOP red.

159 @59 Spent a little time on Facebook (silently; I don't have my own account and don't post). I saw an awful lot of Christian hate on there. It seems the game is to think of something honorable, like adopting foster kids, and then condemning all the Christians who aren't doing that.
-------------------

I've seen a lot of it all of a sudden this week, coupled with people who are gung-ho about letting Syrian refugees into the country. All friends of friends, though it's made me wonder a bit about a few specific Facebook friends.

I think it's part of an effort to make the designated "brown people" religion - i.e. Islam - look better by tearing down that old punching bag of the progressives - i.e. Christianity. If you can demonstrate that all Christians are hypocrites, then they aren't really any better than the Moslems.

160 Most of his examples aren't conservatives. Seniors? Farmers? As groups they aren't conservatives.

I know a lot of both and they're by and large very, very conservative in all ways... except when it affects their pocketbook. Then suddenly out come the excuses. We need this, we have to have this, its an exception, yadda yadda.

I get it. With expenses what they are, prices what they are, yeah. Its scary to think about trying to live without social security: I know because I WON'T HAVE ANY, GRANDMA.

169 A view of the Syrian refugees by a guy who was there (posted by Christopher Allard on FB):

I don't typically go on rants or express my political beliefs here but I just have to get this off my mind. As some of you know, I'm active duty Army. Aside from that, I am a medic. I've spent 3 years of my life overseas in both Afghanistan and Iraq. I've seen some pretty atrocious sites cased by war, from both sides. I've picked up blown up body parts of friends and I've saved the lives of guys who were trying to kill me and my guys right before I was keeping them from their 72 virgins or whatever they believe awaits them on the other side. Here is an unbiased truthful view to the Syrian refugee situation. My first deployment to Iraq, in 2006, my unit voluntarily ran a children's burn clinic outside of the FOB. It was a constant target of attacks. You would think that people wouldn't shoot mortars or rockets at their own children, but you would be wrong.
We saw hundreds of children, from infants to 18 years. The overwhelming majority of the kids we saw (90% or better) were clear cases of abuse. Their parents were literally dunking their kids in boiling water, or throwing hot chai at their kids faces. Yes, we're talking about babies, toddlers, kids not even old enough to understand why their paretns would do these things to them. HUNDREDS of kids.
We saw quite a few of these kids that were sexually abused, both girls and boys. Their parents acted as if nothing was wrong with this, even when confronted by our doctor. This is their mentality of their society, not the viewpoint of a few individuals. These beliefs have been accepted to the vast majority of these people. Many were educated, well dressed, well spoken men, but yet, they still raped their own children and kept "chai boys" (if you don't know what that means, Google it).
During that deployment, we also captured the 3rd largest EFP cache that had ever been captured. There were hundreds of copper plates, homemade explosives, fake curbs to house EFPs, hundreds of mortars and rockets and howitzer rounds, even anti-aircraft gun. All of these things came from one place, Syria. Almost every single IED or EFT we found or hit could be traced back to Syria.
A lot of the terrorist we capture were from Syria. Imagine that.
Fast forward a couple years and I find myslef in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. We had a group of Afghanis that were paid to help guard our little mud hut in the middle of an Afghan village (I wasn't on a FOB). These guys also kept a "chai boy" -- a boy, about 11 years old, who was there to serve these guys sexually. We heard him being sexually assaulted many times, but there was nothing we could do about it. We asked the police, the Afghan Army, and we were told the same thing every time, it's their culture, and accepted as the norm.
Once again, we captured Syrian made explosives, weapons, and other items. We found Syrian passports during raids.
And people out there want us to let these people into the US, with our kids, and near our wives? Near our schools, near our churches, synagogues, malls? Places we should never have to fear being blown up, shot, kidnapped and tortured. Don't forget what they did to the Egyptian Coptic Christians, or the Jordanian pilot. Don't forget what they do to rape victims. They stone these women to death for being raped! They behead their own people! Do you think they will show mercy to you? Look at the rape statistics in Denmark, Sweden, Belgium. Facts don't lie. 97 percent of rapes committed in Sweden were committed by Muslim immigrants. And you want 10,000 of these people here? Even if just 1 percent of these so called refugees were ISIS supporters or active ISIS terrorists, would that be acceptable to you? Chew on it. Think about it. Take a good look at your kids or your wife and decide if the risk is worth taking.
Feel free to share this if you want.

As Jay notes, the reason - at least here - isn't minorities (although that's no doubt "helped"). The majority of the whites in the area are progs. It's something that I got used to in K-12, which was a while back. It's not recent, and not exclusively due to immigration.

Yep. On moving back here, having grown up here, I was shocked at how leftist-infested it had become. A map in the San Diego Union-Tribune showed that most of the people moving here had come from the Bay Area, and the rest from MA, NY, NJ, and IL. At a business lunch it turned out I was the only Californian, with the other half dozen people each from one of those states.

178 A good first step. Just remember: they aren't attacking you, really. They're attacking the truth, which can take care of its self. If you're loving, kind, warm, wise, and discerning despite their hate, that is going to be pretty disarming.

Maybe they have a point sometimes, we all could do more. That's something to agree with, and pray for forgiveness for to God. But that's the entire point of Christianity, isn't it? It always makes me laugh when people accuse Christians of hypocrisy. Yep, you're absolutely right, I'm a hypocrite at times. That's what Jesus died for. That's the entire point of Christianity: that we're sinful people who need salvation. Every time you criticize me or my fellow Christians you're proving us right.

213 @202 Even today, outside of L.A. County, SoCal has a GOP plurality in registration.
------------------

You forgot to include the Bay Area. I've noted that the Bay Area tends to dominate statewide politics. The Dem nominees for state-wide offices invariably seem to come from up there, and then the state Dem majority gets them voted into office. My suspicion is that while LA County has a larger overall population, the Bay Area is much more lop-sided as far as blue vs red voting is concerned, so there's a higher raw number of blue voters up there than there is down in LA County.

Given that, if the Bay Area were to somehow mysteriously vanish from the voter rolls, it might be enough to put the Republicans back in charge in California, even with LA County.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at November 20, 2015 12:14 AM (oKE6c)

Starting in 1898, the GOP dominated. A Dem wasn't elected Gov. until 1938... and then kicked out in the next election.

Until the Great Depression, California was know as the "Iowa of the West". Land was cheap and abundant. The GOP had a dominating registration advantage.

During the Great Depression, the registration fllipped, but though the Assembly occasionally went Dem, it was dominated by pro-business Dems who worked with Republicans.

The state Senate was firmly GOP due to its districting being based on the "Federal" system where no county could have more than one Senator, and no more than three counties per Senator. This resulted in L.A., with 1/3 of the state's population getting only one Senator out of forty.

This went on until 1958 when the GOP was swepts from power both in California and the Nation. Still, only three Dems have been electd Gov. since then (one of whom was Recalled), and the GOP was able to grab the Senate once and the Assembly twice (last time in the mid-'90's).

What really doomed California was the recessio in the early '90's when the defense industry practically dissapeared overnight and all those amnestied illegals started legally voteing as citizens.

The tendency in the culture is to try and amass as much power to yourself as possible. And knowledge is a form of power. Of course, I've been handling guns since I was a kid, but my fear is if the shit hit the fan, I'd be fumbling around like a fool. Pulling the trigger hard and nothing would happen, cause the safety was on. Then if I could have presence of mind to flip it off, nothing would still happen as I hadn't chambered a round. Hell, my AR-15 (before it was lost in the horrible boating accident, of course) has a red dot sight on it and I'd probably be unable to get that thing turned on.

Then my AR-style .308 slinger (some gun nut I am, I can't even remember what the damn thing is called, maybe LR something, it's an AR-10 "like" thing, AR basic design, but shoots .30, the damn scope I put on it isn't really high enough and you've got to be careful pulling the "cocking" handle.

Yeah, if the shit hit the fan and I needed to respond quickly, I'd probably be shot full of holes before I even got the first shot off myself.

I always remember the adage about a revolver being the best as it is the simplest.

There are differences between this DPMS design and the actual AR-10, I think, but it's the same basic general design along with the AR-15.

280 I like the Ralph Peters quote. Nuke Raqqa. Don't mess around with conventional bombs, and smart bombs with multiple missions that put many crews at risk. Look at the thousands of tons of conventional bombs that were dropped on Berlin during WWII, and the capital still functioned, after a fashion.

The technology now exists to level the city in one fell swoop, and kill everything in it that crawls, walks, runs, swims, or flies. We have to assume that everyone in the city is an ISIS supporter, or they'd have fled by now, save by those who are slaves and captives, and the guilt for their death lies with their captors keeping them in harm's way. POW camps of civilized nations are in remote backwaters for a reason.

Nuke Raqqa, and let the scattered remnants of ISIS (and the rest of the muslim world) know that wherever they regroup, and name as the capital of their miserable caliphate will get a dose of the same medicine. Hopefully, other towns will be more diligent in resisting assault by ISIS-droids thereafter.

And regarding those tree-eaters: they have been around Alberta for a while. They are well-suited to logging spindly jack pine and black and white spruce in the boreal forest. I have watched them in action several times.

I was at one of those 'scared sober' talks by law enforcement where the officer told of a particularly nasty ice storm that left the roads the worst kind of icy. Some kids, drunk, driving at an insanely high speed on the ice, crashed into another car. The officer said one girl in the car was cut in half and lived for several minutes and kept saying she had to get home, her mother was expecting her to come home.

The drunk kid was trying to apologize to her. After charges were filed by the prosecutor, the officer went to the boy's home to arrest the kid. The officer said it made him really angry he couldn't arrest the kid because when the officer knocked on the door, the kid shot himself.

Hello XXXX XXXXXX,

This charge will appear on your credit card statement as payment to PAYPAL *LUOAMERICAN.

I don't remember -- I may have bought your book before, as well. But, after my purchase, Paypal offered to return me to the website and dropped me off at luoamerican.com "for sale". I think that all your paypal'd book money has been attached to the wrong site, so you haven't been getting it. It would be interesting if paypal intended to pay all the money to the next person that registered the site.

294 One of the things I notice is that Christians are often accused of being judgmental, yet the warmest and most accepting people I spend time with are at my church. The most vicious judgmentalism I ever see comes from these anti-Christians. And not just toward Christians; I recently witnessed my lefty sister-in-law verbally abuse a crowd of Texans (at a ballgame) because they were icky Texans!

304 So, here's an interesting little story about what happened to me on FB yesterday. Long story short: in a Syrian refugee post started by a friend of mine, a friend of HERS (not my friend -- a complete stranger to me) attacked me as a "stupid, racist, cunt" for stating that I was sick of the moral preening by people on this issue and their complete dismissal of any concerns that ISIS could use the refugee population to infiltrate the US. When I stood up to his b.s. (without any name calling on my part) by telling him that he was a perfect example of the moral preening I was complaining of -- pretending to be such a defender of Syrian women and children with whom he had no personal connection by attacking me -- some one whom he had at least some personal connection, as I was a "friend of friend" -- in the vilest, most sexist way possible, he declared himself the victim and "blocked" me. Typical lib.
My friend deleted the entire post, PM'd me with apologies and assured me this guy "is usually a good guy."
Anyway, I did a Lexis/Nexis search on the guy and it turns out that he was a chiropractor who lost his license to practice in 2000 after he sexually assaulted two female patients. So, again -- the great defender of Syrian women and children is himself a sexual predator.
I'm wondering if I should inform our mutual friend about this guy's background.

But Hillary is a complete fool and she gets ignored.

316 88 Most self-identified conservatives not only don't fight for smaller government, they fight against it when it personally impacts them.

I think this is pure bullshit. I don't know where Geraghty came up with this. Maybe this just says something about his group of friends and people he knows who call themselves "conservative"?

It certainly isn't true among the conservatives who I know. Not by a long shot.

-------

That Geraghty quote came from a larger rant he put out on Tuesday ( I think), where he called the GOP primary voters "stupid" for not supporting a good conservative like Bobby Jindal. Geraghty is exasperated with all the support of Trump and Carson, and to a lesser extent Cruz.

I like Geraghty, even if he's part of the NRO elitists. But they're always lecturing us that politics is the "art of the possible", and Jindal just couldn't get any traction, for a number of reasons.

Thank you very much for the offer, but I think I'm going to take a pass on that one. I've traded my own money in the past, and would like to again one day. I'm very leery of stock trading seminars, Christian based ones included.

You're right, it's tough out there right now. I'm just relearning right now. I traded stocks then moved on to options. Much more risky and exciting. Yes, there will be another bull market, but not until there's another monster crash. Be careful and never risk more than you can afford to lose.

Posted by: Emmie at November 20, 2015 01:33 AM (PiNvr)

That mission creep is attributable to the nature of humanity's relationship with power. The appetite for power is never sated, and government is the business of wielding power. Over time, every department of government will freight itself with more responsibilities and regulations, so they can demand bigger budgets and employ more regulators and administrators.

The end result is always what I call bloatocracy, a bloated bureaucracy that has long exceeded its intended functions, and squanders the nation's wealth through wasteful duplications, the empire building of petty bureaucrats, and vanity projects. They have no sense of responsibility about their use of public funds, because it's not their money and seems to be such a vast resources as to be inexhaustible.

Nations with systems of checks and balances like ours are slower to be corrupted by that process, but corruption is an inevitability that must be countered and removed as it's discovered. It hasn't been, because the people in power are getting rich from the campaign contributions of their cronies both inside and outside the bureaucracy and don't see it as a problem - they see it as the most wonderful thing ever.

I remember an opinion quiz my stepdaughter had taken in middle school. Every question was along the lines of "Should government help with _some good thing_?" Of course, kids are just going to think "It's good to help!" and not ask themselves if the government should be the entity to do the helping. My stepdaughter had answered yes to every question except the one about helping women get abortions. Silly me, I thought she would see the light and grow out of those beliefs. At least she was pro-life (at the time).

Syria was never anything other than a tyrannical backward shithole.

What happened was a determined whitewashing of the facts by hoity-toity socialite publishers on Planet Manhattan, most of whom had never been anywhere near Syria.

Fortunately, thanks to the enlightened policies of Our Betters, the worst parts of Syria will shortly be imported to America, whereupon the denizens of Planet Manhattan may be duly enlightened.

I really have to disagree with you on that. I think '[Axe Victim' is one of the most underrated rock albums of all time, but then I'm biased as I have the album and it was one of those few albums I replaced on cd. 'No Trains To Heaven' is simply a great tune, with some damn fine guitar riffs.

The three-hour time difference is a pain in the ass. The fiancee has been going in early this week to be on High Point time, which means that she's been showing up about 3:30 [here], which is just about when I can be sure I wouldn't interrupt you at work. Then we take a walk for an hour and shop for dinner food. Then it gets to be too late. I probably try too hard to be considerate and should just call people whenever, expecting a 50% rate of "fuck off, don't you know what time it is?"

443 Islam is not a religion but rather a political, social, and economic system. Take Allah out and you got fascism, Aztecs, and Chairman Mao rolled into one big ball of crazy. Losers, drunks and druggies, lazy shiftless nothings, and psychotics are attracted to it like moths to light. Why do prison inmates find it so attractive and fun. Because it rationalizes their terrorizing others. Of course Obama, Hillary, Soros and technocrats like Mutti Merkel like it. They think they can use it to consolidate power.

Anna Puma who entertains us regularly with her great stories and comments about wars and planes, and politics provides funny videos etc has a book "Golden Isis." (I plan to order this soon)

MPPPP who has great stories about Hollywood has a book out-or maybe two by now, The first one is called "The Directors Cut."-a Theda Bara mystery. I recommend it as does our estimable friend in a box, Backwards Boy.

The wonderful "Baldilocks"- whom it's good to see back again posting- has a novel. I look forward to reading that

I'm trying to go by alphabetical order here., either by their forum name or their "real" last name. You can find more information on these and other writings by forum friends and order through Ace's Amazon link

I not not paid any commission to recommend books. I just like these folks and enjoy good books.

Next week is the week of Thanksgiving. Consider donating to Ace's site-if you haven't already--in thanksgiving for all the good work he does.

Now back to your regular programming, :^)

I've been telling people a lot lately that WW II was ended with LOTS of dead civilians and cities levelled. If the Muslim countries don't want to see this happen, they need to fix this themselves.
