Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

For Veterans Day, here are somepictures of Marilyn Monroe entertaining the troops in Korea in February of 1954:

http://goo.gl/gCCjC1

There's a story that, when she returned, she gushed to then-husband Joe DiMaggio about the welcome she had received: "Oh, Joe," she said, "you never heard such cheering!"

Joltin' Joe, remembering his exploits in front of delirious fans at Yankee Stadium, simply replied, "Yes, I have."

12 Trump and Cruz still best on immigration. The others whine about how deportation is mean and impossible, but over two years many would "self deport", with e-verify and cutting off benefits. Others would leave if cops were free to ask for ID of suspects, with fines or deportation for illegals caught. There would not be door to door except for aliens with criminal records.

Immigration Trumps other issues, but Trump has to show details and must learn his own detailed plans.

China is not in the TPP? They were going to cut them in on those deals ... wasn't that part of what the ruckus was about? But I'm not going to read 5000 pages. ha

So with the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the EU has seen fit to commemorate it by labeling all products from Israel to facilitate the boycott.

And the SCOAMF administration dissembles, fumbles and tacitly approves.

Amazingly, the AP still has an honest reporter in Matt Lee.

15 "Safe spaces" is a cliche they use to silence others, to push them around, to end debate. It really has no meaning other than as a blanket demand to shout you down.

And demanding you 'admit your white privilege' is another way of shutting you up, refusing to stop their tantrum until you accept all their premises.

16 12 Posted by: Illiniwek at November 11, 2015 06:48 AM (1XT+t)

Trump and Cruz do not accept the premise about "immigration" and speak only in terms of securing our borders from illegal law breakers and criminals.

That's why they resonate.

18 "And demanding you 'admit your white privilege' is another way of shutting you up, refusing to stop their tantrum until you accept all their premises."

Just look them in the eye with a deadpan, emotionless face, all while repeatedly snapping your fingers.

When they pause to take a break, extend your hand, silently offering them an Oreo cookie.

Double stuffed, if you have them.

19 Hey vet morons. My wife saw a sale at Lowes for vets over the weekend. Bring in your VA card or DD214 and your license and 10% off. Here's the kicker. While checking out, the checker was a vet and told me with the same documentation, you can get 10% off every day of the year. You can get a VA card even if you don't use the VA for any benefits; just if you are a vet. Not too shabby. Happy Veterans Day to you all.

That Google doodle has more minorities in it than the entire Google workforce.

It really is more than the the usual liberal diversity campaign with everybody represented. It seems to be sending a clear message about he past (old white people), present, (white male waving goodbye), the future (minorities, women, gays standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity). But then I'm just paranoid

48 Reading the debate threads, it seemed like a lot of amnesty shills were in the audience. Would it be too tinfoil hat to think that Priebus had something to do with this?

Ie., he picked CNBC so that the mods would make the conservatives look bad and fluff the RINOs. But this failed miserably because the candidates could verbally punch back.

So Priebus decides to try to utilize the audience to make certain candidates look unsympathetic, and bluff/intimidate viewers into thinking that amnesty is a fait accompli.

After all, you can't argue back against booing and hissing. It's the perfect way to promote an indefensible position.

For the record, my fellow students who actually went into the philosophy business, and stuck it out, have done very well indeed. Then again, the guy who conducted my Attic Greek seminar was a welder. So, you can do both, you know.

Welding and philosophy do have one important hazard in common: if you get into a bad batch of rod, those toxic fumes can really get to you. You have to know your...mettle.

60 Had a great run-up to Veteran's Day here, starting with a great photo exhibit in a nearby City Hall: great black-and-white photos of all the area's surviving WWII vets -- not many, sadly -- on display. Many of those vets were on hand Sunday when the show opened, including a local friend who just celebrated his 98th birthday. Last night, the town's Historical Society presented a program on the townspeople who fought in WWI, featuring letters written from the frontlines by a local soldier.

Good to see that even the liberal wackos in my MA town get behind their vets!

Mizzou is more insidious than so many of other SJW campaigns we have seen in the past on campus. Maybe it is the way everybody that might have offered at least a little resistance and sanity (like the school administrators or the football coaching staff) fell right in line without a peep. Not even a phony investigation or discussion groups, just joining the mob right off the bat as two of their own were sent off to the guillotines. The leftist nuts have been emboldened by this. I'm thinking it might be the beginning of a big push for reparations.

It's not like the kid will go to prison or anything but he should not go back to that environment either.

98 The problem with the Missouri college president was that he came from the world of logic - information technology. Where there is some inherent assumption of truth.

Anyone who has spent any time in education knows that logic and truth are rare items once you step on campus. You have to pair accusser and accused, search for witnesses, take statements, keep the pressure on until the truth actually emerges.

Tim Wolfe did none of that. He accepted as true the most blatant lies and distortions and fabrications then apologized. The man was out of his element.

Reparations sound just fine to me. Let's divide up all the government owned land, including ANWR and the place with all the low sulfur coal that Bill Clinton turned into a national park into 40 acre lots and hold a lottery for that every black family (one man and one woman legally married in a religious ceremony) to award who gets what.

Put that on Obama's desk and let him veto it.

Do you have any stories about this beautiful woman?

Lombard and Gable loved each other - they called each other "Ma" and "Pa" - and it's generally thought Gable joined the forces after her death because he wanted to be killed in combat.

Lombard was known for her earthy humor, and while she loved "The King," she wasn't shy about his sexual deficiencies: "If Clark were one inch shorter, he'd be the Queen of Hollywood," she once said.

But here's another story. You'll forgive my not being detailed, but I'm not at home and only remember the basics: there used to be, as I've told you, a high-end brothel in Hollywood nicknamed "Mae's,"* rumored to be run off the books by MGM. It was insanely expensive, and with good reason - the girls were all doubles of popular stars like Myrna Loy, Joan Crawford or Norma Shearer. They were dressed in the latest fashion, their makeup was impeccable and they were au courant with the latest Tinseltown gossip.

Well, it seems that, on a Lombard movie, there was a writer who was desperately in lust with her. So, for a birthday present, his friends arranged a visit to Mae's, where one of the girls was - you guessed it! - a Lombard impersonator. When she appeared before the writer, he was thunderstruck, thinking this was the real Carol Lombard, willing to surrender herself to him. And so they spent the night in flagrante, with "Lombard" talking about the film they were shooting and also how unhappy she was with Gable, and perhaps the writer was the man she was looking for?

The writer was on cloud nine, and the next morning on set, couldn't stop talking about the night he'd had with "Carol." It just so happened that the real Lombard was passing by, and hearing the laughter, asked what the joke was. You can imagine the writer's surprise when his friends told her of the previous night's adventure.

The writer was crushed. But Lombard, far from being angry, was delighted at the impersonation and kept asking for more details. "Jesus, I've got to tell Clark!" she laughed, before stopping herself. "No, I can't. He'd go there!"

Lombard's DC-3 crashed into Mount Potosi, NV, just west of Vegas, on January 16, 1942. The remains of her doomed flight can still be seen and accessed, though it's not recommended by those who have been there:

Buck Sexton brought up that those students pushing the reporter around were committing a crime. I forget the name exactly, but it was like "intimidation", where they are basically mobbing a person and intimidating in a threatening way.

Obviously enough someone calling for a mob of "muscle" to remove the reporter falls in that category. Public space is no safe space for him, except where they push him. They demonstrate the same purpose as Obama's ilk, pushing the mob mentality into the black community with their BLM crap.

Another story about Mae's, which I know I've told before: there's a legend that Joan Crawford, known for her sexual appetite, once visited the brothel and "took over" as her own impersonator, leading one gentleman caller to marvel at the resemblance and ask Crawford, "Who's your plastic surgeon? You could be twins!"

Here's a luminous Carole Lombard in 1932s Sinners in the Sun. Enlarge the pic, look into her eyes and tell me you don't go weak in the knees:

For every hero on the stage
On parade or in the grave
With medals pinned and glory flags unfurled

The humble serviceman by scores
Packs the caissons, Guards the doors
Sails sea and sky across the troubled world

Comrades in arms who heard the call
And stepped across that line for all
Knowing well that fate might call their name

They crossed that sword mark in the dust
For freedoms sake and God they trust
And did it not for fortunes gold or fame

So on Remembrance Day give thanks
To veterans past and current ranks
And Praise Eternal God that they were there

Oh quiet heroes, every one
Without your hand, naught would be won
Pray our acclaim, the purest badge you wear

It wasn't clear to me which appointment she resigned, but in the article it says she only resigned her "courtesy appointment" in the J-School and retains her main gig so far in the Communications Department.

Here's an idea: eliminate the Communications Department. Why does a university with a J-School need a "Communications Department"? It's not an academic discipline anyway. Fire all of them. And Sociology, get rid of them too.

170 "The eight year old beat a one year old baby to death. I have no problem with the state charging the eight year old with murder. "

Oh, I have no problem with the charges at all.

My question was along the lines of what culture teaches mothers that leaving a 1 year old in the care of other children, age eight and less is a good idea?

And what culture raises up an eight year old with such a callus disregard for human life that they can literally beat in infant to death with their bare hands?

That's the culture that I was questioning, which allows the events to take place leading to an eight year old being charged with murder.

In remembrance of my good friend Emmett Horn lost on December 23, 1964 on a combat patrol north of Special Forces Camp Ashau, I Corp, Republic of Vietnam.

Emmett was a bull rider from Vidor, Texas, and was on TDY status from the 1st Special Forces Group in Okinawa. While leading a combat interdiction patrol, it was ambushed with small arms and automatic weapons fire. The CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Group) soldiers (?) failed to respond to the ambush, and Emmett arose and moved down the line of cowering men to implore them to respond to the ambush. He was shot once in the back of the head and never regained consciousness.

Emmett was a man of courage and honor who gave his all for his fellow warriors and country. He was a friend of Barry Saddler, musician and patriot who mentioned Horn in his song and verse.

It certainly seems disproportionate the play blacks get for having slavery in their past. What group of people on earth didn't have their ancestors enslaved at some point?

Also, over the 300 years of slavery when African blacks were brought to the U.S., the numbers were relatively small. It averaged just a little over 1100 per year, for a total of 340,000 in three centuries.

It can be argued that these blacks were the lucky ones. Slavery in Africa and under the Arab traders was far more brutal than the plantations of the U.S.

We could transfer millions of acres of land and billions of dollars in resources from government control into the private sector.

We could also generate a massive political fight between blacks who would receive that wealth and the environmentalists who want to keep it locked up. Throwing in language that requires a one man and one woman family would also make gays oppose the law and cause a fight between major parts of the Democrat coalition.

Oh, yes. In fact, in Budd Schulberg's* memoirs, he notes a scam going on in Hollywood in the 1920s - and probably earlier. The location was the bar of the swanky Ambassador Hotel, where showgirls and wannabe actresses would parade through the lobby, hoping to be seen by the right producer or director.

As Schulberg told it, if a yokel saw a girl who happened to look like a current star, a pimp would approach and pass themselves off as the girl's "director," noting that the purported star had just finished a movie: "ans she's so hot that all she wants to do after a wrap is hide in the hotel and screw her brains out for a week."

The yokel would take the bait, the pimp would take the money, and there you are.

220 I've been doing the emergency food thing for years and the main lesson I've learned is to USE your stores and replace as you go. For example, I'll buy two jumbo bags of trail mix, put one in the stores pantry and slowly use up the other in my regular pantry. When the first bag is used up, I pull the one out of the emergency stores, start using that one up, and replace it with a new one for the stores.

I do this with flour, rice, jerky, sugar, cornmeal...you name it. It works great and I never have expired stuff in my emergency stores. And always dig through the store shelves and get the items with the farthest-away expiration dates.

244 @170

Was the mother completely gone or just taking a nap or nearby?

My sister and I were too close and age for this to apply directly. My cousins though are closer to this: 8 and 9 when the baby was 1. They were often left in charge of the baby if mom was making supper or taking a nap our outside mowing or running to the grocery store real quick (as in less than 30 minute round trip). Realistically, I think that particular age range SHOULD be capable of watching younger children for a short amount of time.

I am more concerned with the psyche of the kid than the mother. Clearly, he is evil and disturbed and probably psychopathic. A kid doesn't get that way on his own, so....is there any salvaging this child?

Just from the experience I had with peanut butter. Someone here said it was ok, but I found out the first exposure to out of date peanut butter would make you sick for a couple of days, but after that you had a immunity and you were good to go.

249 Is it still safe to eat? and how can I tell? Jar still sealed. But the color is a little darker red than fresh.

3 years and a different color? It might be light skunked. Like what happens to beer when it has been subjected to light.
I would toss it.
The expiration date on most products is the amount of time that a manufacturer gives to a product if stored under proper conditions. I wouldn't go too much beyond it.

I never watch LA Confidential.

In one of my earlier drafts of the Theda Bara novel I'm barely working on, I used the Schulberg anecdote as part of the story, but I don't know if I'll still keep it. What I really need is someone I can say, "here's what I've got, where should it go?" For some reason, finding a coherent plot has stymied me for the last couple of years.

Thank you again,MPPPP.

My pleasure, Carol. BTW, if you want a movie recommendation, I suggest The Emperor Waltz, starring Bing Crosby and Joan Fontaine. It takes place in Austria, just before WWI, and Der Bingle is a gramophone salesman trying to get Emperor Franz Josef to buy one, and thus make his fortune. The Emperor agrees. . .if Bing will give up the noblewoman he's fallen in love with and let her marry a more socially appropriate fellow.

It was directed by Billy Wilder, and is one of the few films he regretted helming. TCM showed it once, but haven't in a long time. It is available on DVD, though.

If anybody is interested, I have published a small tribute to my Dad's military service in the form of a historical novel.

"To Save Us All From Ruin" is built around excerpts from Dad's WWII diary and his experiences at Anzio. Of course there's a bit of whimsy, there are peonies in the latrine, and lots of pie! Oh, and a beautiful Italian singer. Link in my nick to a sample chapter.

257 I think this is the third year that I've written up a long comment about my own lack of service and Viet Nam. And every year I don't post it, because it feels like trying to join the parade when I should just be waving a flag on the side.

But this I can relate:

WWI

Dad's Dad's name is on the Memorial Bridge in town. I'm not sure what his service amounted to. He was the young manager of a major local employer, vital industry, so I wonder if he never saw combat.

My Dad's uncle on his mother's side is also named on that memorial bridge. Don't know if he saw combat, but I expect he did.

Mom's Dad caught a whiff of mustard gas on the battlefield. Not fatal, but he was reportedly never quite the same.

WWII

Dad was in the army, but never left the USA, and in fact was never far from home. He helped train pilots for the Army Air Force.

My Father-in-Law actually had an eye put out by a B-B as a child (we told you that could happen!) and so he had to work to get in the service. He taught celestial navigation down in Florida.

My uncle, later my step-Dad (that's as complicated and ugly as it sounds), was a front-line medic in Europe. Minimal training: patch 'em up, send 'em back to the real doctors. Only thing I ever heard of his service was one instance where a soldier had the skin of his head split. As he relates it, with amusement, when he got through stitching him up, there was a big leftover fold of skin. Good enough; leave the pretty-fying for the real docs.

Mom's brother Ed was young enough, he hit Europe after D-Day and didn't see a lot of combat. I've related some of his war stories on here before. After VE Day, he was one of those young boys who was preparing for the invasion of Japan. He's still around, and his great-grandchildren can thank nuclear physics for that.

Viet Nam

My brother-in-law Vince, who died last month, joined the Navy in Viet Nam. He was in "Communications." The secret kind he never could talk about.

Home or abroad, whatever branch, however much they saw of combat, all honor to our military men and women.

The only thing about that I disagree with is it's not just minorities. With every day, kids are turning 18. And more and more of these white kids are joining the resistance. It's "cool" to be anti-establishment. It's "cool" to be anti-authority.

So, more and more voting whites have and will join the BLM matter movement. I think there is only one entity in the entire country that would stand up to BLM. And, that's Disney. Sadly.

It's sad when Disney, a place for children and families, has more control over its parks and operations than college campuses and government institutions.

But here's a hint:

That is the "Babylon" set of D.W. Griffith's 1916 epic Intolerance, one of the biggest sets ever created in silent-era Hollywood. I want the penultimate chapter of my book to take place there as the whole structure collapses in walls of flame - a sort of Michael Bay blockbuster scene, if you will.

No. Intolerance was a flop, and Griffith lost the lot at the corner of Sunset Boulevard where the movie was filmed, so he couldn't afford to have the thing torn down. In 1919, the LAFD declared the thing a fire hazard and tore it down themselves.

The burning of Atlanta was at the old Pathe Pictures lot in Culver City, which, since it was going to house the "Tara" and "Twelve Oaks" sets, had to be cleared. I've heard that sets for King Kong, The Thief of Baghdad and The Last of the Mohicans were among those burned, but I have no confirmation.

323 Why would a "White Power!" type of person draw a swastica with feces? I'm not a White Power type of guy, but from the outside, that seems akin to a Jew drawing the Star of David with feces.
