Taxpayer Funded Stadiums The real reason cities finance sports stadiums. From 2000 to 2009, American taxpayers spent $8 billion to help construct 31 new stadiums for privately owned professional sports teams. But the payback on these investments is minimal in terms of job creation and income generation. When Santo looked at a proposal to bring professional baseball to Portland, Oregon, he found that the income generated by spectator sports in Portland, even with the addition of the new baseball team, added up to less than 1 percent of payroll citywide.Parenting PSA So how savvy are you on teen code words? Jetman Airliner Form Flight
I must be the only person on the entire internet who finds this boring. Alright morons, is a hot dog considered a sandwich? Yes. Why is a sandwich a difficult concept? It just means it'll go broke just that much sooner or Californian taxpayers will have to fork over more money. The latter always seems to be the default CA option. The Carson hits are loathsome, especially given that they are undoubtedly oppo research dropped from within the GOP tent.
My only interest at this point is WHO dropped it. I've seen Jeb's name floated, but I read that he was defending Carson. Trump surely wants to knock Carson down a peg, but his style seems to be more directly confrontational. This sort of weaselly crap reminds me of some of the turds working for Rubio, who surely would like to see Carson knocked out of the race. But I've also noticed Cruz's former communications person, Amanda Carpenter, expressing a lot of *concern* about this story. Not surprised to read that taxpayer funded pro sports stadiums don't live up to their promises. I've felt like they were a rip off for years. That study in the sidebar about "women are bisexual" just agrees with previous findings. I guess it's making the rounds because it's new.
At any rate, it seems to be men are either straight or gay, while women are bisexual in what arouses them. And it's just that arousal patterns, not what they'd actually do in real life, just keep that in mind. Men and women are very different sexually, in terms of all the brain stuff going on. While the end product is the same, screwing, how they get there are very different. There are some evolutionary psychology explanations for "flexible female" sexual attraction, but all those seem a little cut and dried to me, explaining things after the fact. When it can predict behavior not observed before, then I'll be impressed. Bonobos, our closest relative (genetically along with chimps, although they say were likely closer in other ways, but this is not my wheelhouse so I don't really know) are like that. Female bonobos are highly bisexual, with the females frigging each other all the time. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at November 06, 2015 11:06 PM (dvuhZ) 204

Everybody, just have to show you this.
I've told you all about my online friend Tony Bigcharles before, that he's claims to a be a conservative Christian, but he's also an irresponsible professional gambler with an abandoned son. Anyway he posted this yesterday. He changed the title of this blog post to "How I Feel About God Right Now," but if you look at the web address line in your browser... well, he's blaspheming Jesus (take a look for yourself). In the meantime, of course Tony doesn't take any responsibility for losing money gambling lately. Malt Vinegar is the best topping for french fries, other than salt. Great on fish too, but fries especially.
I've found that some soy sauce in mustard creates a smoky sort of flavor and cuts the bite of the mustard somewhat. The purist in me says only mustard and onion on hot dogs, but the part of me that has been to Chicago says that "Chicago style" has a lot to recommend it, as well. That is mustard, sweet relish, onions, a dill pickle wedge, sport peppers and tomato slices. Portillo's is the largest chain that serves an authentic Chicago hot dog, and in addition to locations in Chicagoland, they also have a few franchise locations in SoCal now too. The hot dogs themselves are Vienna Beef brand, which is good, but there are others out there that are almost as good. Hebrew National is OK. I am also fond of "natural casing" hot dogs, but the various brands of those tend to be distributed only regionally or even locally, so a good brand from one part of the country is almost always unheard of anywhere else.
The other great sandwich from Chicago is called an Italian beef, but you have to get one from one of the "Big Three" (Al's, Portillo's or Mr. Beef) to understand what that is all about. Portillo's does ship frozen Italian beef kits all over the country, fortunately. Posted by: HTL at November 06, 2015 11:39 PM (1ab8T) 324
256: That's too ambiguous. Define "vile affections" and "against nature". They could be talking about "pegging", that would be vile to me big time.
The best argument I've seen is at the time, men were the ones who initiated sex (well, we know that's not likely 100% true, but that was the assumption), and thus lesbianism was impossible because that would require at least one women to do the initiating. Thus there was no need for specific prohibitions. That's the best argument, IMHO. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at November 06, 2015 11:39 PM (dvuhZ) 325

Keep in mind these studies measure arousal objectively, not what people say turns them on. People notoriously lie about what turns them on, and the lying is likely more to themselves than to others.
If an image turns a person on, there will be a measurable physical response, and that's what these types of experiments measure. In these experiments, the population of women show a bisexual arousal patter, while men are polar, either women turn them on and not men, or vice versa. And the biggie is that arousal does not translate to what a person would actually do by a wide gulf. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at November 06, 2015 11:51 PM (dvuhZ) 362

In these experiments, the population of women show a bisexual arousal patter, while men are polar, either women turn them on and not men, or vice versa.
Not necessarily bisexual. Men and women have different patterns and triggers of arousal - some shared, but some different. A woman might become aroused by seeing a beautiful naked woman not by her, but by association and thinking about what it means and memories of being naked, etc. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at November 06, 2015 11:55 PM (39g3+) 374
And another thing about these arousal studies. In absolute levels, men are much, much more aroused by visual stimuli that women are. And that agrees with what you see in real life of course.
Hook a man up to some MRI machine to get those images of his brain and show him a picture of a nekkid woman. You'll see areas of his brain concerned with that light up like crazy. Women, not so much. About 20 years ago, ginseng was the Next Big Thing in British Columbia agriculture. Big spreads of shade cloth all over the slopes of what was formerly pasture land along the Thompson River valley. Scarcely see any now. Gone the way of emu ranches.

Much like silk production in the US south. Were the ginseng farmers getting subsidies? Also, did ginseng pass as a fad and lower the demand? I know there's still at least some in drinks and such, but it doesn't seem like there's nearly the push to get people to buy ginseng products that there was. Humans are why I don't hold much hope for breaking the boom-and-bust cycle. They're fickle and the only ways to change that would be tyrannical. 373: Yep, that's possible, but it means that "mode" of arousal is something unique to women, which is not seen in men at all. I mean, which I see a picture of a naked man, I don't want to see it. Get that shit out of my sight. Show me naked women, and I get that silly smile on my face and enjoy the hell out of it.
Nothing there at all reminds me of being naked with a woman and therefore aroused. Now, in these studies, the same pattern is seen with women who swear up and down they are "gold star" lesbians, only like women and don't want anything to do with a man at all. Even those women show the same bisexual arousal pattern statistically. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at November 07, 2015 12:10 AM (dvuhZ) 403
I'm of the opinion that, yes, a hot dog is a sandwich. It's a piece of meat and a piece of bread combined to form a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
You could argue that the type of bread used on a hot dog is different from that of a sandwich, but I would point you to the submarine sandwich, which basically uses a bigger version of a hot dog bun; nobody would argue that that's not a sandwich. Like other sandwiches, a hot dog can be eaten with your hands or served open-faced and smothered with chili or gravy or queso or some other type of sauce. If a hot brown is a sandwich, for example, then a chili dog also has to be considered a sandwich. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler... Trump/Camacho 2016! at November 07, 2015 12:11 AM (0OG8D) 404

20 The Carson hits are loathsome, especially given that they are undoubtedly oppo research dropped from within the GOP tent.
She's ostensibly "just asking questions" but keeping the damned thing alive long after its expiration date. If it turns out to be from Cruz's camp, he can kiss my vote goodbye. have different patterns and triggers of arousal - some shared, but some different. A woman might become aroused by seeing a beautiful naked woman not by her, but by association and thinking about what it means and memories of being naked, etc.
Posted by: Christopher Taylor at November 06, 2015 11:55 PM (39g3+) That's true, but it's also true that women can appreciate another woman's beauty for entirely aesthetic reasons without sex entering into it. I can see a picture of a young Liz Taylor or Catherine Denevue and think "wow, she was gorgeous!" without wanting to sleep with her. It's like looking at a beautiful painting. Men don't often acknowledge other men's good looks in the same way (maybe because they don't want to be mistaken for ghey). I think the equivalent might be men acknowledging other men's strength or athletic capabilities. Men have no problem saying "Lord is that guy strong/fast/coordinated" and nobody thinks that means they want to boink the dude. Posted by: Donna&&&&V. Posted by: rickl at November 07, 2015 12:15 AM (sdi6R) Man, there's a vast gulf between Cruz and Obama. Obama was born in Hawaii of an America-hating mother, and and America-hating Kenyan student (allegedly, at least), and then adopted by Momma's #2 husband, and spent his formative years in Indonesia. Cruz was born in Calgary of an American mother, living there with her Cuban immigrant husband, working in the oilpatch. And back in the day, you couldn't turn around in the Calgary oilpatch without bumping into a U.S. citizen. And U.S. radio can be heard here, and U.S. TV channels are on the cable. So the Cruz family could easily keep current. And young Ted always had his U.S. citizenship; he just also had Canadian citizenship by reason of birthright. Cruz is an American patriot. Obama is an America-hating quasi-alien. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 07, 2015 12:27 AM (0yhH4) 457

Was your nice serious in thinking altho God was not being nice to her because she was having a bad day, or was she just in a complaining mood?.. We can all complain Howerver if she was serious, it's probably not a faith that's going to be beneficial to her. We all have bad days; We get a flat, the water heater breaks, people treat us badly. Yes. sure these little things are annoying but it's part of life. Scripture says "In this world you will have trouble." (NT) or "Man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward" (OT). It's not God's job to smooth our every little wrinkle in life; God's certainly not doing that for everybody else. For the Christian the goal of the Christians life is to through the Holy Spirit to help us become more like Christ and in the next to enjoy God's presence and give us whatever work/rest we have there. Unless she's having major ongoing problems than I think her complaining about God not being nice to her is a little silly and even Job who was having major problems said "Though he slay me iI will trust him." That's very hard when things are going very badly, but she didn't have a happy day?! Com'on Her's an article about not confusing God with life. We ought to come down to the beach more often out of season. Because it's a teacher's convention day school was off/ There was a toddler about two who was having the most fun running down the boardwalk. 525 Mario Brothers and Zelda have two of the greatest soundtracks for games. Easily identifiable.
The original Warcraft before the mmo had pretty good and memorable music. Warcraft II would change the music based on the race you were playing and if you were being attacked or not. I still remember the Human campaign music to this day. And men *do not* show the bisexual arousal pattern at all. It's only women. Gay men are a small percentage of the male population and that shows up in these experiments. The vast majority of men are aroused only by women. And a small percentage of men are aroused *only* by other men.
Men who claim to be bisexual are found to be gay on the arousal meter. So a man, not gay, who says wow, is that guy fast, strong, good, does not show any arousal from naked man. These experiments measure *sexual arousal*, which is a physical state that can be objectively measured. Women, whether they claim to be straight, lesbo, or bisexual statistically show the bisexual arousal. Men, on the other hand, statistically divide into two groups. The vast majority are sexually aroused by women, and a small group is sexually aroused by men. So the "appreciation of another member's of the same sex looks, talents, etc. but in a non-sexual way acts differently in men and women. With women that non-sexual appreciation shows up as physical sexual arousal, but in men, it does not. And on the other hand, you have men who claim to be gay and display physical arousal patterns in agreement, but you have women who claim to be lesbo only, show the same bisexual physical arousal behavior as the general female population, in disagreement with their claims. No detectable differences, statistically, with the general female population. Sexual arousal is a physical state, a specific state that can be objectively measured. If you are being moved greatly emotionally by some piece of music say, some beautiful painting, or what not, that doesn't show up as sexual arousal. Everything's going well for me, too. If I hadn't gotten out while the gettin' was good, well, in the worst-case scenario, I'd have been unemployed for a long time before finally getting hired for like half what I'm currently making. Oh, and that's why we have so many examples of straight women having lesbian affairs before 20th century pron (geared to men) came into being. It couldn't be that insecure women or teases pretended to be attracted to other women because they realize it's a big male turnon? Oh, no, I've NEVER seen women manipulate men by acting flirty with other women - and then laughing about how they had just wrapped the men around their little fingers. Nah, it's totes sincere.

don't fall for statistics without checking it out yourselves. For example: less than 1% of salary in Portland area is anything less than $1.6 BILLION a year. if $8 billion was spent nationwide in a decade on funding sports stadiums, sounds like it just might be good spending. They tell you "less than 1%" because if they had to say $1 billion a year, their argument would lose.

And how do I know that? when I was in college, a girlfriend and I had way too much to drink and well, I forget what the impetus was, but we hugged each other in a bar - and the guys around us roared. We didn't kiss or anything like that, but we put our arms around each other and our heads together and smiled for a Polaroid - and that, and that alone, probably set guys to fapping that night, thinking we wanted to get it on. We had absolutely no such desire - we were deliberately hamming it up for the boys!
I think misunderstanding arises because women can hug and kiss and get physical with each other in a way men can't. Well, you know what? The sexes are different that way. If you saw two guys hugging and kissing each other on the cheek and smiling with heads together, you'd certainly think ghey. You don't get- or some of you don't get - that women can do that without being sexual. Posted by: Donna&&&&V. (brandisher of ampersands) at November 07, 2015 02:04 AM (P8951) 578

This weekend, 650 Barnes-and-Noble stores are having an event branded as a "mini-Maker-Faire". Since I can pretty much walk to my local store, I checked 'em out a couple of times today. It's not all that, but it ain't nothin' neither. Being a brainstorm of nerds and corporate marketing geeks, it often missed the point or went off on tangents (3D printing -- there's the regular kind that uses PLA plastic at reasonable temperatures, and then there's the light-cured resin type. Things we focus on: the resolution is better in the resin version so you get a smoother surface and they're slightly faster to print. Things we don't focus on: a PLA 3D printer starts at $350, a resin bath printer starts at about $10,000; resin bath prints come out coated with toxic waste and need decontamination before you can safely touch them; after you get a resin-bath print out, you need to further cure it to achieve full hardness......)
They had Legos for the kiddies, snap-circuits for the bigger kiddies, make catapults from plastic spoons, rubber bands, clothes-pins, and tongue depressers for bigger kiddies (OK, I was miffed that I missed that)..... IMHO, it has promise. Posted by: cthulhu at November 07, 2015 02:10 AM (EzgxV) 583

I got a packet in the mail which I was dreading opening because I knew it was likely the renewal crap. I finally bit the bullet an opened it. 20% premium increase. Co-pay and deductible stayed the same. On the drug coverage, I suspect they've moved even more out of their "formulary". There's a beta blocker I have to take, Bystolic, which they moved out, and I pay full price. They claim cheaper one do the same thing, and thus not needed, but my Doc claims that not really the case here for various reasons. He went to the trouble to write a letter stating his medical opinion was I needed the newer types, but they turned it down. I imagine they're going to be playing more games with it. The entire health care system is fucked up sham. I'm certain that if we get all the bureaucracy, insurance and govt, and all the rent-seeking shit out, cost would be less than the deductibles and co-pays. 609 Don't worry, I've found something else to get fixated on: Health insurance.
Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at November 07, 2015 02:36 AM (dvuhZ) Go hang at Derringer's "The Market-Ticker". 616: Yeah, I read Denninger all the time. I used to post on his forum all the time, even "donated" a little to do so, but he shut it all down. He got in a "don't feed the beast" mode and is cutting his income down as low as he can so not to pay taxes and thus feed Leviathan. That, and he was also mad at all the talk and no do, people posting but no "demanding" their government quit all the crap.
Now, if everybody, a significant percentage, went into the same "don't feed the beast" mode, it would make a big economic impact. But it would be hard for a lot of people to do, even if they wanted to. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at November 07, 2015 02:48 AM (dvuhZ) 621

Yes, consistently great writing. Soooo many quotable lines...
Donna, the main reason is that the better ones sound amazing AND have historical value. Although it is also true that we are in the midst of a renaissance in the art of instrument building. The modern makers are very good. Soundwise, it has to do with the way the molecular composition of the wood changes over time. As the exposed surfaces oxidize, they harden, and most violins are at their acoustic peak when they are over 200 years old. My cello just turned ten and a half. One theory is that, because violins were strung at a lower (pre-steel strings) tension at that time, they cound be made thinner, and were thus more responsive. Then, as tensions came up years later, these thin violins were now hard enough (thanks to decades of oxidizing) that they were able to take the higher pressures associated with the new strings, and do it without caving in. But that's just one theory. Posted by: Piercello at November 07, 2015 02:51 AM (RXfvh) 623
Are they still droppiing dead right and left from heroin in the North East and Chicago? I read that junkies get excited over ODs b/c it means what the person bought is high in purity and more bang for your buck. So, they try to find who sold it and score some themselves.
Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at November 07, 2015 02:53 AM (iQIUe) 624
Another point: the tops and backs are not uniformly thick, but rather are graduated in thickness, with the thinnest parts of each plate being out near the sides of the instruments. Advances in measuring technology and computer simulation have helped people work out just exactly how to graduate the tops for optimum response, often to the point that new violins can rival the strads even to the ears and fingers of concert artists.
But there is nothing quite like being in the same room with one of these old instruments in person. They have seen a lot. Posted by: Piercello at November 07, 2015 02:55 AM (RXfvh) 625

618 Hey Cuth, how do you think an old machinist would be greeted at one of those maker fairs?
Posted by: BackwardsBoy at November 07, 2015 02:44 AM (LUgeY) That's actually a complicated question. "Hands-on" knowledge is actually revered, and experience is honored.....within limits. It actually goes back to a serious face-to-face discussion between Arbalest and me.....we were talking about dividing heads and making gears. The old-fashioned method is that you have a specially made plate where you turn it 15 holes and put a pin through an alignment point, then do a pass with a mill. To make a 127-tooth gear, you do this 127 times. Arbalest tells me that you "get into the zen of it". My take (which comes from accounting systems) is that there are "people things" to do and "computer things" to do, and the more you have people doing people things AND NOT DOING COMPUTER THINGS, and computers doing computer things AND NOT DOING PEOPLE THINGS, the better off you will be. I consider analog dividing heads to be an abomination. Then, again, a while back there was a presentation on grinding camshafts that I thought was awesomesauce on toast -- totally analog, but beautifully reproducible. So, basically, machinists who had a bit of flexibility on the automation side of things but who could bring insights into materials and methods would do well......while machinists who stiffly insisted on manual methods while reading feeds and tool paths from guides might not. Many orchestras own these rare and very expensive instruments and loan them to their musicians. It's a privilege and an honor. One musician in my neighborhood had the use of a 2 million dollar cello. Coming home after a performance, he unloaded his car but forgot to bring the cello inside. In the morning, he saw that it was gone. They offered a large award. Security tapes in the area showed a kid in the alley trying to ride away on a bicycle with the cello under his arm. It was returned in a week. Better (and easier) would be to just make a reliable 22 magazine that holds about 40 or 50 rounds. There's no reason this doesn't exist (the PMR-30 has 30 rounds of 22 mag). I think I remember something about a "bumpfire stock" for the classic Ruger .22.
IIRC, BATF came down hard on a guy selling them, even after he got some letter of approval from them. The dispute is over "one pull of the trigger" firing more than one round. They claimed that with a bumpfire stock, this wasn't violated, since the trigger had to pulled for each round, just using the recoil effect in a specially designed stock to allow you to pull and release that trigger very fast. I don't know what the law really is, but I know I wouldn't mess with anything like that. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at November 07, 2015 04:39 AM (dvuhZ) 658

"If being cured of a disease due to past aborted fetal research "justifies" future abortions, than would not a disease being cured by genocide justify future genocides?"
Of course it would. The "right to die" movement is where it will come from. Posted by: Tim in Illinois Old, Uniproved and TRUMP! for Emporer 2016 at November 07, 2015 05:11 AM (WVsWD) 670
Nice snag, Hat.
Posted by: cthulhu at November 07, 2015 05:06 AM (EzgxV) Scary, though, that this is happening during a twitter spat wherein using past research from aborted fetuses to justify abortion is totes different from using past research from genocide to justify genocide... I saw Spectre at an afternoon matinee, and it was half filled with an older crowd.
Mendes manages to put a lot of action and spectacle in a movie that is well-paced. The photography is just as gorgeous as Skyfall, but a different DP and shot in 35 mm. I will have to watch it again before I rank it against the other Daniel Craig movies. Posted by: BourbonChicken at November 07, 2015 05:25 AM (VdICR) 673

I may have missed Hat, but if I didn't, I wanted to say that for laptop and tablet users, copying a *part* of a line is problematic.
You post text like "more:" on the same line as the link a lot of the time, and I don't follow them much. I miss nipple mice. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at November 07, 2015 06:13 AM (bLnSU) 677
So last month the govt over-estimated the jobs created by a whole bunch, and now this month they under-estimate by an even greater amount, the morning after Obama says fuck you to job creation from the Keystone pipeline. One of those amazing coinkydinks that seem to happen so often since the Great Taupe Hope took office.

Ask the fine citizens of Kansas City about what a sports team is worth. They number approx. 400K people. That number was joined by another 400K people for their world championship parade last Tuesday. Are you going to tell them its worth 1% of their city's wealth? Good luck.
