3 Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, November 01, 2015. On this day in 1512 the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo was exhibited to the public for the first time. And Morons dont forget to Fall Back due to that wasteful DST change brought to you by stupid merchants. It doesnt save an ounce of energy or daylight but it keeps the stores in daylight longer. So as more and more stores go to 24/7 operations what is it accomplishing? Answer nothing but making people feel groggy at work for a month.

In enlightened being news:

On Nextdoor.com, where residents share strategies for fighting crime, Malkia Cyril of S.F. suggests that her neighbors stop using the term "criminal" because it shows lack of empathy and understanding.

Cyril pointed out that instead of calling the thief who took the bicycle from your garage a criminal, you could be more respectful and call him or her "the person who stole my bicycle." "I [suggest] that people who commit property crimes are human and deserved to be referred to in terms that acknowledge that," Cyril, who's the executive director of the Center for Media Justice in Oakland, writes in the thread.

"I think we should think twice before speaking in disparaging terms about 'those criminals,'" she adds later in the thread.

63 ISIS may not have shot down the plane, but got some small explosive on board which blew out some control(s). From what I've read and the pictures I've seen it was not a completely out of control landing. It landed, broke in half, and burned in place, passengers still seat belted in.

So my #1 theory is explosive tied to altitude. Behind that in #2 position is lousy maintenance.

In this city sux news:

Radical New Parking Ideas That LA is Thinking of Adopting

Expand LA's ExpressPark program, the variable pricing system now used in Downtown LA that changes the price of parking meters based on the demand for parking spots throughout the day.

The city already plans to bring similar meters to Westwood, Hollywood, and Venice, but the LAPRWG wants the city to push the program even further. The report also calls for pricing structures that account for holidays or events nearby. Obviously that would mean making higher parking prices near the Staples Center on game night, but they also suggest variable pricing for spots near a mall around Christmas.

la.curbed.com/archives/2015/10/los_angeles_parking_reforms.php

And since LA has been turned into a theme park where there's some sort of "festival" or holiday or special event going on every day, that means maximum parking pricing all the time.

The town I live in uses parking meters only in the Summer, when tourists flock to the gimcrack stores and the "art" galleries. Some are the new "ooooh, shiny!" solar-powered type that take credit cards (and parking costs more where they're installed). The latter were forced on us by a town government that is all hot to have the Latest and Greatest in costly high-tech gadgets in our town of 7,000.

Also, we recently got a stop sign at the main downtown intersection. Locals are whining about it, because "we never had one there before!".

Posted by: MrScribbler at November 01, 2015 07:49 AM (qiCMH)

78 I was going to ask where you found that, before I figured out that you must be in the UK.

The reason that it was the best that you've had is that they used a single, large, fillet of fish - as opposed to the tiny little pieces that most places in the US use.

While three small lumps of fish may weigh the same as one big one, there are many differences in the resulting meal - including texture and overall ratio of batter to fish.

This is not rocket science. Fish & Chips started out as poor people food, not some gourmet thing. The wife and I occasionally make our own that's every bit as good as what we got in England, but I've never been able to find a restaurant here that's cottoned to the fact that, with fish, size really does matter.

The stated reason for my old hometown getting rid of them was that they cost more money to keep up with than they collected in fines and parking. I suspect that fancy new "solar powered" ones would cost even more than the old mechanical style that required no power.

That and the merchants hated them.

82 Not an enemy of battered fish -- battered women, another story -- it is an art form, and all that. But in these here parts, there's plenty folk have never tasted, you know, actual fish. Not sure about catfish, just not that brave, but every other fish that is normally "deep-fried" cooks up just fine in a pan with some butter. I've made quite a (nasty non-repeatable) name for myself by surprising people with pan-fried fish they'd never had that way before. I suspect the batter was a way of stretching the catch to serve multitudes. First recipe involved five loaves, two fishes.

Then, there are fish you'd probably never eat, but are terrific smoked. We've had a Smoking Thread, no? My grandfather would row out to get carp and sheephead. Spooky looking coming over the taffrail, but after a couple of days in his little stone smokehouse they were really something. Transformed into carcinogens, natch.

At the last Town Meeting -- we use the classic New England-style "Board of Selectmen" and twice-a-tear residents' meeting form of government -- we were asked to approve $10K to pay the company that processes transactions on the credit-card meters. Silly me, I recall the advocates for the "connected" meters claiming they would "pay for themselves" and make the town megabucks....

Of course all that's over for this year. All meters have been stowed away. Now the residents are complaining about the parking restrictions meant to ensure access for snowplows....

When I lived in Saratoga Springs if you left your car on the street after dark when all the stores closed they would either tow it at your expense or the snow plow operator would bury it.

Right you are Pappy. This is a article of faith of the Early-Gentrifiers, who obviously hope to be eaten last. It quickly morphs into "The person who raped had a misunderstanding with my [late] daughter" and "The person who left his knife in my chest."

See if they'd bite on "The legal person who inadvertently released one barrel of fuel oil into the community creek." O I think not. It's boots and saddles then.

I know this town has towed a few, Vic, and there are cars that get buried every year when the plows roll by. Most of the complaints about the law -- and mainly from newcomers to the town -- are of the "hey, it's not snowing tonight! Why can't I park on the street?" variety. Since this town was laid out mainly in the 19th Century, there aren't many driveways in town, so you have to park on the street or in the municipal lot. Driveways are mainly found in the more recent districts.

I want to change the town's motto (whatever the hell it might be) to "Founded in 1840, and Not a Damn Thing Has Happened Since!"

I sometimes take a walk around downtown Clearwater, Fl...It's pretty much owned by Scientology. Everythings kind of clean and orderly, and pretty empty. You can spot a believer, women- dark blue slacks, white shirt. Men- pretty much the same, all with cell phones...interesting.

97 The small town near me has always had parking issues. They have a small municipal lot a block back from main street. The wife and I used to visit a small restaurant there at least once a month. So one time I back into a parking spot, for some logical reason. Come back out of restaurant and I have a parking ticket -- for backing into a parking spot. I ripped the ticket up, stayed out of their town forever. The restaurant eventually went out of business.

The town is infested with radical lefties.

108 @100 The biggish city next door has just spent millions to take down their landfill-gas co-generation plant. It was costing as much per month to operate as it was supposed to make in a year. And the area retired engineer, who had given them a plan to lace up a running plant out of surplus gear for 10% the cost and furthermore told everyone who'd listen "this thing will never work," got a very polite and public front-page pat on the head on his way off the world stage. Rube.

The amount they lost was more than their big financial scandal of the late 70's, which "bankrupted" the "city." And put several people in jail for decades.

Sunday Praise this week is a song written by Matt Redman and sung here by Chris Tomlin and a few friends, at an event held in Houston Texas. I think I recognize Dave Crowder in there. The song is entitled "Bless the Lord, Oh My Soul" but is also commonly known as "Ten Thousand Reasons".

Bless the Lord oh my soul
Oh my soul
Worship His Holy name.
Sing like never before
Oh my soul
I'll worship Your Holy name.

You're rich in love
And You're slow to anger.
Your name is great
And Your heart is kind.
For all Your goodness
I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons
For my heart to find.

If you look at Drudge's current lead story about Shrillery, one of the subheads is "Too Big to Jail." No one in D.C., whether elected or appointed, is going to go after her.

Her fanbois are already convinced that zillions of dollars have been wasted on a futile attempt to "smear" her. It's a narrative as old as Whitewater, and perhaps older.

166 For those of you playing our home game, remember the Chicago/Baltimore shot clock correction factor.

Divide Chicago events by 4.23 to compare per capita with Baltimore.

167 Colin: Chicago Police: Customer with concealed carry license kills robber...

One encouraging thing I noticed traveling around north side Chicago last month, several places offering CC classes. Glad to see they're effective.

Parking meters: Chicago had this deal, no meters, but you walked down the block, paid into a box that spat out a ticket you had to walk back and put on your front dashboard. Or for a fee you could sign up on your cell. Yeah, that was handy -- not.

Since I'm actually urban this morning, I think I'll take my doggie for a walk around the block. We could both use it. BBL

168 I believe Baltimore rang in 32 murders for the month of October.

Chicago would need somewhere on the order of 130+ fatal shootings to reach parity.

But don't call them "murderers". They're "people who shot you to death".

So what's up for TWD? Do we find if Glenn is alive or dead? Do we get to see more of the damage to Alexandria? Do we see another attack by the wolves? Does Lydia out Carol? Shit, I would be Carol's best friend.

--

I have heard that the next ep won't even mention Glenn.

So, at first I was the only one watching TWD in my family. Then last year the youngest, without me knowing, started watchibg on her phone. Then this weekend my hubby started marathoning it (he's in season 3 right now)
Only the oldest kid, away at college, is TWD free. As for the rest of us, it's clear: we are all infected.

I've seen this in several cities on the east coast, works quite well.

There is fresh kill lying near the RV so maybe the walkers will stop and nosh giving rick time to run or for help to arrive.

Still wish they would wear protective gear.
