In the olden times, proto-James Bond adventures like Dan Dunn Secret
Operative #48 (and some of the movies starred R.Reagan) always ended
with the skulking conspirators being led away (off the airship!) in
cuffs. Roll credits. You didn't have to wonder what happened next.

Endless
appeals, Free____movements, and, well, Gitmo As We Know It have put the
lie to the old ideas, that when you turn over the rock the things
underneath will scuttle away like Catiline's senators there on the Group
W bench. The people you're dealing with now aren't "honorable" like
Nazi saboteurs or even Muscovite moles. It's more like the Black Knight,
who has to keep cutting one more limb off his assailant. And, it's
working.

36 The two Democratic frontrunners, Hillary Clinton and Sanders, each out-raised all of their Republican rivals. Clinton raised $29.4m, edging Sanders who had $26.2m. Both far outpaced Ben Carson, the top GOP fundraiser at $20.8m, in the past quarter and were even further ahead of other top Republicans as well.

Sanders is pulling in the bucks.

Here's a police-shoots-and-kills-unarmed-teen story that you probably won't see getting much coverage in the U.S. media:

http://tinyurl.com/qyft2u2

Teenager was pulled over because he flashed his lights at oncoming car (the cop's car) that appeared to have its brights on. (Turned out later that several other motorists had also flashed the car earlier, for the same reason). Cop got annoyed and pulled the teen driver over. Teen was not sufficiently deferential to the cop, they get into some kind of altercation, cop empties gun into unarmed kid.

But there will be no outrage in the U.S. media over this killing, no marching in the streets, no burning down of towns -- because the kid shot dead by the cop was white.

To reiterate, the Dem's are fighting to see who can be the biggest leftist on gun control. And that doesn't play in PA, despite them thinking it's a blue state.

PA has some of the freest gun laws in the country, probably top 5, so thinking you can demonize guns and get the state is just stupid.

According to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Federal Election Commission filings. Thats more than he spent on any item besides air travel, which he purchases from a company he owns himself. When you add t-shirts to the mix, the total money Trump spent on these promotional items comes to $678,000, according to the report.

Posted by: chemjeff at October 16, 2015 08:21 AM (uZNvH)

Fair tax is imposed on consumption. You buy something, and it's taxed. That's it. Essentially a sales tax, but VAT taxes every level of production of a product so that the final price is orders of magnitude more than actual cost. Even more than a normal mark-up. Also, with VAT you still pay an income tax to boot.

At least that's to the best of my knowledge.

Flat tax is better for reason of simplicity.

In theory, ending all income taxes and replacing it with sales tax would be a good thing but again, the nature of sales taxes make it a trap also, imo.

178 I thought there was a big difference between "Fair Tax" sales taxes and the VAT. The Fair Tax is supposed to apply only at the time of final sale to the consumer, as in when a he or she buys a car. VAT, on the other hand, is charged at every step of the economic process. When a miner sells bauxite, a tax goes with it; the aluminum smelter charges VAT when he sells the aluminum; the car parts company charges VAT when they sell the parts to the auto company, who in turn charges the consumer a VAT when the car is sold.

Isn't that the difference?

so as I understand it

http://www.moneycrashers.com/fair-tax-act-explained-pros-cons/

it would require repealing the 16th amendment, which is not going to happen, and if it didn't happen, we would end up with both a sales tax and an income tax, just like Europe

the national sales tax would exempt business purchases, but that would quickly go away the moment that people found out that they could just "start a business" and use that to avoid the sales taxes. And once the sales tax applies to business purchases, then it becomes a VAT.

the "fair tax" wouldn't start off as a VAT but it would quickly become a VAT.

It's not clear from the article what really happened. The cop pulled the kid over for flashing his brights. The kid, believing the cop did not have probable cause to stop and detain him, refused to show him his license, registration, etc. The cop kept insisting, and the kid eventually told him he didn't have his license with him. The cop told him he had committed a misdemeanor by refusing to comply with a traffic stop. He told the kid to get out of the car. The kid refused. The cop called for back-up. He again told the kid to get out of the car. He pulled out his taser gun, pointed it at the kid, and told the kid to get out of the car or he'd be tazed.

The kid refused to get out of the car. The cop opened the car door and pulled him out. The cop ordered him to get face down on the ground, with his arms out. The kid got on the ground (while holding his cell phone to film the incident). Then the cop apparently tried to pull the kid's arms behind his back and restrain him. The kid says "officer, what are you doing?" there is some scuffling (the camera has fallen off the cop's uniform at this point, so you really can't see what is happening), then there is a scream before the video ends.

The story says that the officer tazed the kid (which I guess is when he screamed on the video), but that the tazing didn't work, so then the cop shot the kid seven times.

At least that's to the best of my knowledge.
.
.
.One other point. The product is taxed at every point before it gets to the consumer and those taxes are passed on to the end user without that user having any idea how much in taxes has been added to the price of the final product along the way. It allows the taxing authority to in essence hide the total amount of taxes on a product from the public.

Additionally it allows the Government to generate a larger amount of revenue with seemingly small tax increases. A 1% tax increase doesn't sound like much to the public, but if it is applied to the entire process it generates quite a bit of additional Tax revenue to the Fed.

195 173" Imo Fair Tax is too complex to happen in real life. Too many opportunities for shenanigans. In other words, it's a trap. "

I think it's about the most transparent tax available.

You have one tax that's added on to new goods and services across the board. No individual ever has to file tax returns again.

80% of the commerce now in the U.S. is done with larger companies. You can verify this by just thinking about where you personally spend money. Most goes to large grocery chains, gas companies, large retailers, mortgages, car payments, etc. No large company is going to try to Mickey Mouse their tax collections.

On the small business side, there are only a million small businesses as compared to 120 million individuals, so there is a lot less to keep track of. There are lots of ways to catch cheaters.

The great thing is that all the sources who would have never paid in to the system are now being tapped to reduce the burden on regular citizens.

One of the features of a Fair Tax Plan is that everyone has their citizenship established. With this there will be some sort of ID. Even without an individual ID, there will certainly be a business ID.

When a business purchases something tax free for resale, they would simply scan their card just like a credit card. The computer will keep track and know if and when the item is resold and taxes paid to the fed. If not, the Fapper business owner has some 'splainin to do.

Posted by: grammie winger, Isa al-Masih for muslims too at October 16, 2015 08:48 AM (dFi94)

237 One of the features of a Fair Tax Plan is that
everyone has their citizenship established. With this there will be
some sort of ID. Even without an individual ID, there will certainly be
a business ID.

When a business purchases something tax free for resale, they would
simply scan their card just like a credit card. The computer will keep
track and know if and when the item is resold and taxes paid to the fed.
If not, the Fapper business owner has some 'splainin to do.

Posted by: jwest at October 16, 2015 08:42 AM (Zs4uk)

So how would the state know if my business was a "legitimate" business or not? There would have to be some bureaucracy deciding on which "legitimate" businesses gets the business ID and which don't qualify. And this bureaucracy would end up being staffed by Lois Lerner types. And this huge database of stuff that people buy, where would it be kept? I am guessing this database would also include individuals' gun-related purchases?

245 I agree in principle.
But in order to get the 16th amendment repealed, we have to show people the PAIN of income taxes.
A flat income tax begins to do this.
I see a flat income tax as a transitionary phase to eventual repeal of the 16th amendment, and then to a consumption based tax.

248 Daylight. Snowflakes in the air.

Taxes. Everybody argues; the rich want a sales/VAT because they can afford it with their income. The poor want a subsidy because that would be fair. Nobody wants a flat tax because the poor should be exempt and the rich get away with paying less than their fair share.

The real problem is the governments, at all levels, spending too much on the wrong things. The real problem is a government which is too intrusive, and a government that neglects its most important function which is keeping the peace, and defending the country.

If the old tax regime isn't knocked out before a new one is implemented, we'll just get both. And there's only one way the old tax system gets knocked out, and it ain't legislatively.

325 I posted this yesterday, I thought it was worth repeating:

I just got the official OLIF (old ladies in Florida) read on the Republican candidates. Talked to my mom who is a retired teacher and born and raised in Florida, lifelong Republican, she's got a ton of old lady friends in Florida. She is my barometer. So here it is, the truth, if you can handle it:

Trump - don't really like him, but the Republican party is so dysfunctional that I'd like to see him kick it all over.

Carson - don't know much about him.

Carly - I like her.

Gilmore - who?

Pataki - who?

An aside I wouldn't mind Mitt coming back.

Santorum - he's running?

Huckabee - he's running? We've had more than enough people from Arkansas.

Jindal - he looks too foreign.

Bush - we've had enough Bushes. Barbara said we don't need him, listen to your mama.

Cruz - don't know.

Paul - is that him or his dad who is so nutty?

Christie - I used to like him but when he introduced Mitt at the convention all he could talk baout was how great he was.

Rubio - not ready for a Hispanic.

Graham - well his office got me my passport expedited but he is light in the loafers

Kasich - the guy from Ohio? In that first debate I kind of thought he made a lot of sense.

And there you have it.

326 Somehow stumbled across some info on the career of Mr Shea not long ago, and found the politics of the Mets founding interesting. After the Dodgers left, some interested parties were willing to do anything to get a non-Yankees team in New York. Including founding a new league, if necessary.

Seems Trump-level radical now, but, consider the AFL, USAC, and that other basketball thing that went on. The Fifties were a foreign country; they did things differently there.

At one point, the Mets had Amos Otis, Ken Singleton, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman. Very bad trades and cheapskate owners (the deRoulet family) meant years in the wilderness.

I'll never forget the Rigby cartoon from 1977 in the NY Post when M. Donald Grant traded Seaver. Shea Stadium was depicted as a haunted house and the caption read "Grant's Tomb."

He traded a franchise player/hall of gamer away for nobodies.

373 If you tax productivity, you will get less of it.

Fair Tax isn't exactly like the VAT tax but it's very close.

The proponents of the Fair Tax don't like that being said for good reason; it's a deal killer.

Flat Tax is the better way to go. IT is actually fairer.

Establish appropriate amounts for the cost of living for a person and the cost of a child. Say like in CT where it's $12,500.

Allow that and child costs (if any) for an initial deduction. Any income over that amount is taxed at a flat rate. No deductions, no tax shelters, no special laws to let some friends of Congress pay less taxes. No married filing etc.

Aze, I'm with you on the need for caution, but exceptions are exceptions to the rule. They don't invalidate the rule.
As an example, the night he (or she) is nominated, the GOP nominee should convene a team to start reviewing every executive order, executive agreement, agency memorandum, etc., enacted since January 20, 2009, that has no authority other than the officeholder's pen. The rule should be that they will all be rescinded. The team's job is to find and justify the exceptions. (After that, they can start on rescinding the regulations that require notice and comment - that will be a multiyear process to wipe that slate clean, with all the litigation that will follow. Maybe it will be possible to suspend them while they are under review.)

406 Speaking of the Mets, right after they won it in '69, my dad took me and my brother to see a taping of "The Ed Sullivan Show" where the team was supposed to sing "You Gotta Have Heart." So, we're sitting there for hours, watching Topo Gigio, chihuahas's juggling bears juggling plates to the tune of Khatchaturian's "Sabre Dance" until finally, Sullivan comes out and says "well, right now on our shue, the world champion New York Mets will sing 'You Gotta Have Heart.' We pre taped that so let's move on."

I swear, I got up and shouted "WHAT???!!!" Man, was I disappointed, and pissed.

True story.

Back to the Fair Tax.

If you're an individual or a business that doesn't sell retail products or services, you wouldn't file anything with the government. You maintain your privacy in your home and papers, just like the Constitution says.

If you chose to engage in commerce, you will need to maintain records and report sales and taxes collected to the IRS.

As I mentioned before, the vast majority of business is now conducted with large corporations. Even the small businesses are affected, if they take credit cards.

You might be able to scam the system if you're buying bunch of organic carrots from a roadside farmer, if the farmer wants to take the chance you're not reporting them.

Your sister-in-law might still give you haircuts at her salon without charging tax, if she's 100% sure you won't get pissed off at her in the future and rat her out.

It's just not worth it.

426 Preferred Communities Program (PCP): This program targets small towns and rural areas for refugee resettlement. The rationalization is that these settings are best suited to attend to the myriad needs of refugees as compared to large cities, and that smaller communities are more welcoming to refugees. PCP collaborates with the Office of Refugee Resettlement and partner agencies to identify communities they deem most ideal for refugee resettlement. Here's the deal: Small towns and rural communities often have easy access to public assistance programs. That's it. It's all about where to get free money and services. (That's how you wind up with pockets of Somalis in places like Wyoming.) Meanwhile, conservative areas of the country are being targeted, helping to turn red states to blue.

do you see the irony in this? (from the American Thinker link - thanks)
