Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Problematic Breakfast Sandwiches: The Washington Post's Errantly-Named "WonkBlog" Has Concerns About the "Upscalification" of Egg SandwichesProblematization of a term, writing, opinion, ideology, identity, or person is to consider the concrete or existential elements of those involved as challenges (problems) that invite the people involved to transform those situations. It is a method of defamiliarization of common sense. Problematization is a critical thinking and pedagogical dialogue or process and may be considered demythicisation. Rather than taking the common knowledge (myth) of a situation for granted, problematization poses that knowledge as a problem, allowing new viewpoints, consciousness, reflection, hope, and action to emerge. What may make problematization different from other forms of criticism is its target, the context and details, rather than the pro or con of an argument. More importantly, this criticism does not take place within the original context or argument, but draws back from it, re-evaluates it, leading to action which changes the situation. Rather than accepting the situation, one emerges from it, abandoning a focalised viewpointFootnotes omitted, italics maintained. The "defamiliarization of common sense" -- rather a too-accurate description of the process. The process is of course one intended to undermine the assumptions of the eternal Class Enemy, the bourgeoisie, a people who have made it, relatively, in the world, and therefore are champions of the existing order. If only their innate common sense could be challenged and replaced with a different view of the world; if only they could see everything as problematic, as the Class Warriors of the New Left do. The Washington Post here is engaging in overt class warfare here, propagandizing people to "problematize" the world, and every tiny itty-bitty nit of it, so that they'll reject capitalism, and marriage, and fossil fuels, and, by God, one day even upscale breakfast sandwiches. Thus this deeply silly piece sets out to defamiliarize your common sense. Your common sense might tell you -- "What do I care if someone wants to pay $11.50 for a stupid upscale breakfast sandwich with expensive imported cheese?" But this common sense must be estranged from the viewer, so that what he really sees is a Troubling Concern of National Importance -- this pricey egg sandwich is actually a violent appropriation of Proletarian food culture. Oh dear. It goes on for several hundred dreary words more, each soggier with socialism than the last. Charles C.W. Cooke asked a good question: Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

The millionaire who drives a pickup truck, the celebrity who hauls their own luggage, the politician who prefers a diner to a five-star restaurant. The pretentiousness of an expensive, overly-made breakfast sandwich strikes people as trying too hard.

If you are a tobacco-product user (cigs, snuff, and e-cigs) you are charged an extra $100 a month. This makes three huge increases in a row. Next year, I won't be surprised if they start charging more based on BMI. Posted by: DangerGirl and her 1.21 gigawatt Hardline Sanity Prod at October 13, 2015 06:20 PM (q20+R) 190

This reminds me of how i've always thought of liberals as having *cluttered* minds, meaning they get lost in minutia to the point of detriment. I can almost always tell if a person is to the left or right politically when i walk into their house, people on the left tend to have lots of things they don't need and they're not very organized, in other words their houses are cluttered like their minds, people on the right tend to have organized, minimalistic houses mostly filled with things they need, that won't be true all the time obviously, but it's true more often than not.

tortillas: for wheat tortillas (the ones you usually want to use for burritos), get the uncooked ones in the store. Some brands require refrigeration, some only so after opening. Anyway, hot skillet (cast iron or regular), 2-3 minutes on it, flip once, voila. For corn tortillas, similar option available, though heavy very hot cast iron skilled makes more difference with those. Really though, very easy and simple, as long as you have stores with the right kind of tortillas. Breakfast sandwich. At home I can make bagel sandwiches that rival anything I've had from commercial outfits. Decent bagel, round-shaped microwave bowl about the same diameter, bacon/ham/turkey your choice, cheese slices of whatever variety. I put some fresh-snipped rosemary and oregano in the egg before micro'ing it; place on bottom half of lightly toasted bagel, then meat, then cheese, then top of bagel. Then back in micro for 30-50 seconds, just til cheese starts to melt (but before the micro re-hydrates the bread, which it tends to do). Killer. And about 3-4 min. of effort. off topic, before I get out of here:
from 'vox': In a blistering New York Times column, Brooks accuses today's Republican Party of betraying the actual tenets of conservatism. "By traditional definitions," he writes, "conservatism stands for intellectual humility, a belief in steady, incremental change, a preference for reform rather than revolution, a respect for hierarchy, precedence, balance and order, and a tone of voice that is prudent, measured and responsible." ... ... Over the past 30 years, or at least since Rush Limbaugh came on the scene, the Republican rhetorical tone has grown ever more bombastic, hyperbolic and imbalanced. Public figures are prisoners of their own prose styles, and Republicans from Newt Gingrich through Ben Carson have become addicted to a crisis mentality. Civilization was always on the brink of collapse. Every setback, like the passage of Obamacare, became the ruination of the republic. Comparisons to Nazi Germany became a staple. Have been on short-term insurance, and gaps without any coverage, since Jan. 2014 (thanks, 52% and SCOTUS!!!!). First time in my life, of course. First time health "insurance" was even an actual topic or merited much attention, even though it had long since been inflated by regulation, oligopoly, welfare, etc. Closest apples/apples coverage after O-care kicked in was TRIPLE the previous cost. Oh, yes. Actually have to look and see what ridiculous price they are asking now. Also need to see what my next short-term work-around will be. I wore myself out asking this question last year - but how the f**k did this, easily the largest, fastest, most dramatic and important artificial cost increase in anyone's life in modern history (for those on private plans), not generate even a tiny blip of interest in the press or society or politics? And prices on the better things will never drop to where they're as ubiquitous as cell phones--once the province of the rich, and because the rich were "allowed" to have them, now the province of even the dirt-poor.

Recall Bernie Sanders' Great Deodorant Theorem, that an economy's woes are inversely proportional to the number of choices of deodorant available.
Somehow 28 choices of deodorant is just wasteful excess, better to limit choices to allow wealth to be spread to other uses. A couple of activists... well, a bored female college student and what I always personally called a "hambeast" in my non-reconstructed youth, were handing out pamphlets calling for the end of culling of wild horses in wilderness areas.
I asked if they cared about the Yazidi women and Christian women in the mideast being systematically raped, and I got first the denial, "we care very much" and the deflection "but we are talking about loosing entire bloodlines" I repeated that back to them. And walked on. Posted by: Kindltot at October 13, 2015 07:32 PM (3pRHP) 472

Well its hard not to like Jame as a character. She wanders out of the Haunted Lands being chased by, what the simple minded would call zombies, to stumble into Tai-Tastigon. But the gates are open and there are no lights. Jame's luck is running true as she has stumbled into the city on the night of the Feast of the Dead Gods, the one night where the Gods who have lost all their followers come back. Naturally every smart person is cowering in their beds not showing a light and there is Jame outside floundering around. So Jame manages to thwart an attempted assassination. Where upon she gets sucked into a bitter sibling rivalry in the Thieves Guild when she becomes an apprentice thief all the while her race is known for being obsessed about honor. And to top things off further, the priest of her people in the city hates her and she is also moonlighting as an exotic dancer.

Why are some people so damned obsessed with the fact that someone else has it "better" than they do? It doesn't keep me awake nights knowing that some other guy has 4 yachts. Posted by: RKae at October 13, 2015 07:22 PM (G1Sde)/i] Exactly. Sony Records is releasing a set of Bob Dylan studio outtakes and rarities next month, and it's available in four different versions. The cheapest is a 2-disc set for $20, and the most expensive is an 18-disc set with hardcover book and other bells and whistles for $600. There are two other sets that are in between. In a discussion thread at Amazon, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth: Waaah! I want the 18-disc set but I can't afford it! It's so unfair! There were so many class envy type comments that I had to speak up. Paraphrasing, it went something like this: "I can't afford a Porsche, but do I resent people who can? No. Do I resent Porsche for catering to that upscale market? No. "Last year I bought a Mazda. While I couldn't afford a Porsche, I could have bought something more expensive than a Mazda, like, say, an Acura. But all I really need is basic transportation, and a Mazda suits me fine. "So guess what? I ordered the 18-disc version. I can afford it in part *because* I bought a cheaper car. The beauty of the free market is that we can choose to spend our money on things that are important to us." I got a couple of positive reactions to that comment, so I hope at least some people got it. Posted by: rickl at October 13, 2015 07:42 PM (sdi6R) 504

The Old Left at least had a theory to explain their desires. The New Left just has tantrums.
Posted by: Grump928(C) at October 13, 2015 06:58 PM (rwI+c) The old left worked from the idea that the great sin of ages is inequality, and moved to assure that there would be equal access to the material goods in life. and decried the philosophy of religion that would promise benefits in the afterlife to allow the proletariat to forgo having material benefits in this world. The new left works from the idea of enforced equality, and mocks the material goods freely available as being harmful to the psychological and emotional health of the society. The left has gone from mocking with songs of "you will have pie in the sky when you die" to using them as hymns. Posted by: Kindltot at October 13, 2015 07:50 PM (3pRHP) 520

So rich NYC liberals drool over an expensive egg sandwich which drives up the price. Other liberals who are obsessed with expensive breakfasts anyhow(Starbucks) ,think that sandwich is a must have because everything else is GMO poison. Then the rich liberals complain that it is the evil capitalists that are keeping the good stuff out of the mouths of the other liberals.
Never mind the fact you can make a two week supply of those sandwiches for the price of 2 sandwiches if you made them yourself. That is no good because then you cant be seen at the trendy restaurant in your hipster breakfast eating outfit. Posted by: Trapperguy at October 13, 2015 08:23 PM (cfC9U) 533

33: Just take them, monitor your blood pressure (CVS has either blood pressure machines and/or pharmacy techs that can take BP), and do the diet and exercise. If you don't like the effects of the medication, call your doctor. A cautionary tale: My cousin didn't like the side effects of one particular medication she was on (even though there are a quadrillion BP medications on the market), wouldn't call the doctor for another one, and subsequently, at the tender age of 50, died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
