Quote of the Day I

The essential feature of this disorder is a pervasive and unwarranted tendency . . . to interpret the actions of people as deliberately demeaning or threatening. Almost invariably, there is a general expectation of being exploited or harmed by others in some way. . . . The person may read hidden demeaning or threatening meanings into benign remarks or events. . . . Often these people are easily slighted and quick to react with anger or counterattack; they may bear grudges for a long time, and never forgive slights, insults or injuries. . . . They tend to avoid blame even when it is warranted. . . . They intensely and narrowly search for confirmation of their expectations, with no appreciation of the total context. Their final conclusion is usually precisely what they expected in the first place.

-- A summary of the DSM entry on 'Paranoid Personality Disorder' from Matt Labash's The Cocked Fist Culture

Quote of the Day II

If our universities are teaching students that their emotions can be used effectively as weapons-or at least as evidence in administrative proceedings-then they are teaching students to nurture a kind of hypersensitivity that will lead them into countless drawn-out conflicts in college and beyond. Schools may be training students in thinking styles that will damage their careers and friendships, along with their mental health.

-- Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt in The Coddling of the American Mind

Quote of the Day III

Of course, the real and fair solution is much less politically correct but effective. It's to stop trying to protect people's feelings. Your feelings are your problem, not mine-and vice versa.

Real empowerment and respect is to see our fellow citizens-victims and privileged, religious and agnostic, conservative and liberal-as adults. Human beings are not automatons-ruled by drives and triggers they cannot control. On the contrary, we have the ability to decide not to be offended. We have the ability to discern intent. We have the ability to separate someone else's actions or provocation or ignorance from our own. This is the great evolution of consciousness-it's what separates us from the animals.

...There is a wonderful quote from Epictetus that I think of every time I see someone get terribly upset about one of these things (I try to think about it when I get upset about anything): "If someone succeeds in provoking you, realize that your mind is complicit in the provocation."

He said that some 1,900 years ago. Even then we felt that it was easier to police the outside than examine our inside.

-- Ryan Holiday

Quote of the Day IV - Econ 101 Edition

Housing prices in San Francisco, and in many other communities for miles around, were once no higher than in the rest of the United States. But, beginning in the 1970s, housing prices in these communities skyrocketed to three or four times the national average.

Why? Because local government laws and policies severely restricted, or banned outright, the building of anything on vast areas of land. This is called preserving "open space," and "open space" has become almost a cult obsession among self-righteous environmental activists, many of whom are sufficiently affluent that they don't have to worry about housing prices.

...When more than half the land in San Mateo County is legally off-limits to building, how surprised should we be that housing prices in the city of San Mateo are now so high that politically appointed task forces have to be formed to solve the "complex" question of how things got to be the way they are and what to do about it?

-- Thomas Sowell

Quote of the Day V

Are we flexible enough to allow audiences to see things in our work, which we ourselves may not see? To fixate on aspects of our stories that we either consider trivial, or which interest us not at all?

Case in point: Gene Roddenberry was far more interested in the "free love" aspect of his 23rd century star navy - a navy Gene denied was a navy at all - than most of the fans, many of whom were interested in the star navy; as an extrapolated future military. In fact, Star Trek and its Starfleet became the personification of military SF storytelling for millions of fans. I am pretty sure Gene never intended it to be that way. But that's how it worked out. Gene's been gone for almost 25 years now, so we can't ask him how he feels about this legacy. Frankly, I think I'd be damned proud to have a fictional footprint the size of Starfleet on my storytelling resume. Starfleet is the idealized service many actual, current servicemembers wish they could join - myself included.

Starfleet will live forever.

That's canon. That's the fans finding meaning in the work.

More Suspicious Details From the Waco Shooting

The fact that over four months after the shooting the forensics on the bullets that killed the bikers still hasn't been released is telling in itself.

When Fear Of Radiation Is Deadlier Than The Radiation Itself

This spring, four years after the nuclear accident at Fukushima, a small group of scientists met in Tokyo to evaluate the deadly aftermath.

No one has been killed or sickened by the radiation - a point confirmed last month by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Even among Fukushima workers, the number of additional cancer cases in coming years is expected to be so low as to be undetectable, a blip impossible to discern against the statistical background noise.

But about 1,600 people died from the stress of the evacuation - one that some scientists believe was not justified by the relatively moderate radiation levels at the Japanese nuclear plant.

Japanese Robot Manufacturer: Please Don't Fuck Our Robots

The creators of Pepper the 'emotional robot' have forbidden users from using it for sexual purposes, creating 'sexy apps' for it or reprogramming it to stalk people.

One thousand people paid £1,300 to buy the 'companion bot' within one minute of it going on sale in Japan this June, and then £250-a-month in rent.

Japan-based SoftBank included a clause in the ownership contract which said using the robot for 'the purpose of sexual or indecent behavior' breaks this agreement.

Disturbingly, computer pranksters have already reprogrammed the touchscreen hanging from its neck to give Pepper 'virtual breasts' which makes it shake its hips and moan when touched.

It has reignited the debate around so-called 'sexbots', with one roboticist telling MailOnline that machines which humans can realistically fall in love with are only 'years away'.

13 Regarding the gun death per capita graph...

A better graphic on the 'danger of guns' would be deaths per gun.

If we are to play around with correlation vs. causation, per capita is very weak when trying to run an analysis of 'what is going on?'. If we are looking at cars vs. deaths we need to look at cars vs. death. Anything dealing with 'per capita' is the correlation with population which means jack (but, maybe useful with contagious disease..). Better would be usage: miles driven vs. death.

So, here, maybe cartridges vs. death.

Might find that the US is one of the safest countries on Earth.

40 Well, finally sitting down, enjoying a rum and coke after a semi-long shop day. Put the Diesel Suburban on the hoist to give it a lube and oil change, and service the starter, which had been getting intermittent. Not good. Had to quit, part way through, and go to town and get mail and groceries.

Came back, got the starter off, and took it apart. Filed the contacts in the solenoid, which was the core of the problem. Used to be GM solenoids, you could take the contact lugs out, turn them 180 degrees, and reinstall, presenting fresh clean faces to the contact disc. Well, GM "improved", and now the contact lugs are molded in. And they use some BS lead-free solder on the terminals now, and my soldering gun could scarcely soften it. Bastards. I also repacked all three ball bearings, and greased the drive-end bushing. Worked fine on the first start coming off the hoist. So there's that.

Once I finish this shot, I will grill a hunk of pork tenderloin for dinner.

The AP piece that is linked, because it's the AP, of course omits to mention that the Poles were rightfully already pretty annoyed on this subject, after Barack Obama's description of Jews being slaughtered in what Obama called "Polish death camps".

And you would figure Obama would have some knowledge on the subject, since he claimed in 2008 that his uncle helped liberate Auschwitz while serving in the Army.

Not only did the press not pick up on the fact that said uncle would have had to have served in the RED Army to have done so, but the press were still dutifully regurgitating that same familial claim of Obama's, without fact-checking, during the 2012 campaign.

Well, if you want to pick nits, the Nazis did develop space flight. The V2 rocket did exit and re-enter the atmosphere in its flight. It didn't have enough jam to put a satellite into orbit, but it could have made a booster stage for a 3-stage orbital launch vehicle.

There's a game we play in our house sometimes. We watch a movie, then my wife jokingly asks me for the subtext. Because of my extensive background in mythology and such, I launch into an extemporaneous bullshit routine about how "That character represented Christ, and that character was a Pharisee..."

I can assign stupid symbolism to EVERYTHING.

It's possible to do it with different flavors: Gnostic symbols, Illuminati symbols, Freudian symbols.

But SJWs do it with "offensive code words." They can attach a "demeaning stereotype" label to any damned thing they want to.

Like me with my game, I think they only believe what they're saying about 20% of the time, and they know the other 80% is a damned lie.

improved on it. And the Russians got to orbit first.

Posted by: rickl

The Jupiter/Viking was largely a derivative of the V-2 (greatly refined and improved, with more thrust). von Braun said he could have gotten a satellite in orbit in 1954 if the Army would have let him put one more small booster stage on it. Which they did a few years later, after Sputnik. And the Navy fooled around with the Vanguard failures for months.

The Redstone booster (launched the first two American suborbital flights) was also a derivative of the Jupiter/Viking rocket.

184 A typical Arab expression of religious wrath:

Starts with explosives either mixed up using recipes developed by non-Arab chemists or using imported explosives. Generally by an Egyptian or Pakistani.

The resulting explosives are loaded into a car built in Europe or Asia, maintained by an Egyptian or Turk. Filled with gas refined by a Western corporation using oil discovered, drilled, and pumped by Westerners.

The car is then driven on a road designed by western engineers, built by Asian engineering firms, using Indian labor and maintained by Pakistani or Indian firms.

The Arab manages to drive himself to the target (sometimes) and crosses two wires.

250 Observations from the road

#2 - We noted as we traveled that they just aren't making the old single-floor drive-up-to-your-room motels anymore. They're building hotels.

Milady mentioned this to the desk clerk tonight, and he confirmed, "They're just not as safe" as hotels where you have to walk in through the lobby.

Did not discuss the meaning or context of "safe," but I think we can count it as another example of cultural deterioration.

Start growling when Warf was near her. Them Klingons like rough sex. On the Holodeck, with safety features all enabled and doubled down, I think I'd like to go at a she-klingon.

IIRC, she bonded with Picard, but picked up his supreme sense of duty, and thus went ahead and married whatever alien dignitary she was meant for.

There was only one word offered after she typed "doggie."

282 You know, instead of having dynamic ads served up by third-party ad servers, maybe Ace could, you know, sell advertising to clients, for a small fee, ads that would be part of the content on the blog, and not blockable by ad-blockers (meaning no annoying video ads!).

Valu-Rite vodka? Lucky Gunner? Glock? There must be hundreds of companies that would be comfortable with the AOS style, and who would see AOS readers as their target market. A few simple print ads in the header, or down one sidebar would not be at all annoying, nor would they impact load times. Small Dead Animals has ads of this nature.

What's gone with Adblock is stuff like Firefox hanging up. Warm Flatulence was the worst of those I frequent, and some here would do the same thing. Anyway, firefox would lock up or just disappear or act like it closed, but I'd see the CPU meter going. I look at the task list and see firefoxe.exe or it's child "plugincontainer-whatever.exe" just hung taking 25% CPU and would have to manually kill it.

Then when I'd open it again, it would try to reload all the crap it was hung on and make a mess of crazy sized windows all over the place. Chrome was getting hangy too.

After Adblock, I haven't had another of those episodes. Knock on wood. But they'll find a way to fuck that up too in time, I'm sure.

Didn't see any Churchill (what was that famous speech he gave at a Mo. college?), but the sex store billboards hit as soon as you roll into the state on I-44.

First one I saw tonight had the tagline "Sinful Sensations." Reminds me of the old pre-Playboy days when the girlie mags would have names that invoked sin, the devil, and the like. Compare with the recent casino billboard in Oklahoma, "Good clean fun" - suggesting, it's not a sin, it's not dirty, it's good, and clean, and fun to throw your money away.

Jesus save us.

Which is the place to mention #5 and my final road observation so I can quit my highway-buzzed rambling and finish reading the post and some comments before I crash:

Passed a sign for a Missouri state highway called

Thought it was an ad for Hooters.

I've played a couple of weddings in the stone church where Churchill gave that speech in Fulton. Fantastic place. It's the oldest church in the Western hemisphere, having been given as a gift by some grateful British folks after the war. It is several centuries old (the architecture clearly predates foyers and plumbing), incredibly beautiful, and was reassembled here stone by stone after the trip. There is a wonderful Churchill museum in the basement, and large pieces of the defunct Berlin Wall, complete with graffiti, are displayed on the grounds.

I'm kinda goofy myself, and more so for each year I get older. Plus, I'm guessing, plenty of brandy.

There is a wonderful Churchill museum in the basement, and large pieces of the defunct Berlin Wall, complete with graffiti, are displayed on the grounds.

Pieces of the Berlin Wall with German graffiti at Eureka College, Reagan's alma matter. Small, little Illinois farming community, surrounded by cornfields. Wall completely out of place - must be fun to explain to the freshman was that was/is.

Funny, anyone remember a tv show from the '70's called Meeting of the Minds? Steve Allen creation, he would interview people portraying disparate figures from history - say, Napoleon, Shakespeare, Martin Luther and Socrates. That sort of thing. Would be interesting to see a play where Churchill, Reagan, ??? - Thatcher?, Truman? Eisenhower? talk about the Cold War.

Gun Tests, supposedly.

http://www.gun-tests.com/

Most industry "reviews" are trivially brief in their testing.

Combat Handguns used to do torture tests and features on gunsmith's experiences with more depth, not sure about these days.

A reloading magazine's or competition magazine will tend to have more rounds through a gun in a test than a general "guns magazine" mag.

Most of the "information" I see is barely more than rumor and innuendo - 1 gun and 100 rounds tested, or something like that.

Real testing would be very expensive.

You will see occasional 10-gun or 10k round tests, but for serious
testing it's pretty much military gun selection processes (most often
found on gun forums, some of them in military journals). They generally
test what they choose to destruction with several samples.

Mind you, that limits your selection.

Everyone has their specialties, but yeah, the industry is largely ruled by anecdotes and rumors.

For those not in on the geography -- if you're trying to drive to Norfolk, which is on the coast, you have to get around the "Great Dismal Swamp" which is somewhat inland. There's a route the skirts the swamp to the north, and a route that skirts it to the south, but you know it's there.

I'd been trying guns in a variety of styles/brands and I was astounded at how much better I shot with a full-sized 1911 by Kimber. JMB [PBUH] knew what he was doing.

Today's exercise demonstrated that a 9mm v. a .45 was a push for accuracy. Different sized holes in the targets -- nine smaller and 8 bigger -- but no real difference in accuracy.

I think it comes down to how well the grip fits your hands, and how well the sights fit your eyes. I found with a Glock 9 mm, nearly all my rounds went in a small group offset from the bullseye about an inch towards 8:00, but with a Browning Hi-Power, and several revolvers, and even with a .22 auto, my groupings were poorer by far. And this for a basically green handgun shooter.

You've definitely got two of the big factors listed. I'd also add "the reaction of the gun to being fired" and "the comfort of the grip prior to firing". I've been finding that the Kimber 1911 in 9mm has been shooting well at the limits of the range.

Nice. After I was faced with a "flee or flight" (I fled) situation I got serious about what I carried. I went from a Lightweight Officer's Model .45 to a Glock 23 .40.

That little Colt was amazing. Gunsmith that made it did a fine job. 3-1/2" barrel and damned accurate. 4-1/2 lb trigger that broke like glass and a polished feed ramp that would feed anything. Problem is, my 2nd shot was always off unless I practiced - alot. I realized I was more in love with the gun than how effectively I could use it. Full size frame and I'm shooting one of those just fine.

I can't (or don't wish to) manage a full size for carry.

And Kimber makes a mighty fine pistol, whatever model it is.

I have yet to fire a .45 of any kind. Next trip to AZ, I will go to the Scottsdale Gun Club, and try a few. Say an original 1911 pattern Colt, a Kimber, and maybe one of the cheap 1911 knock-offs? I don't think recoil will be a problem for me at all.

Hey, kiddo -- any fun going on in your last week? I went out target shooting tonight and realized that I didn't have any new accomplishments to brag about since last Monday although I'd done a lot and made a lot of progress.

The guy I go shooting with works at Apple with a security tool that they're bending towards customer experience. Last week, I got to brag about tweaking hardware/iptables under Linux to deliver different experiences to different interfaces. This week, I've been looking to resurrect enough of my data to complete tax filings for 2014, and have made progress.....but I'll really only be able to spike the ball on that when I file, and it really doesn't further the greater scheme of hardened nodes + networks.

I think you're half correct in the sense that public education is not a right. In my asshole opinion, what needs to happen is the schools need to be able to suspend or expel troublemaking students of any color or ethnicity as necessary, without the Dept.'s of Justice and Ed getting all up in the school's face claiming racism or some such 'unequal outcome' bullshit.

A life lesson in personal responsibility and consequences for one's actions would go a long way to correcting our 'sliding downhill at plaid speed' public education system. Oh yeah, and get rid of those bastard teachers' unions so that crappy and/or criminal teachers can be axed without having to jump through so many hoops. Make 'administrating' and teaching an 'at will' job. Plus, no more guaranteed pensions. Let 'em contribute to 401(k)'s like the rest of the corporate world.

That's not the worst idea I've heard, for sure. If we are going to keep any kind of public involvement in education, I'd privatize the whole school system and just give everyone a voucher for the average cost of education in their state, excluding the top and bottom 5% of schools from the calculation.

That'd give people a lot of flexibility in deciding what's best for their child, nobody gets left out, and the action of market forces in the education system would lead to the extinction of the teachers unions.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at October 06, 2015 06:15 AM (VPLuQ)

486 That is really not my point. When you send a Child off to be educated by others with public money paying for it via taxation you are not solving anything.

First off you creating a infrastructure that taxation has to support.
Second you are creating an artificial value for education that will attract those who
in effect just want to warehouse their Kid(s) for eight hours a day.

You want the cost of Private and Religious School to drop to a level that is affordable?

End public education.

That still would not be optimal. When Parents educate their Kids the Parents are the Kids primary influence.

That is what would be optimal. IMHO.

Unless we can get the cost of living fixed, it just won't work. Thanks to the erosion of the middle class, particularly the good paying jobs that men used to do, it usually takes both parents working just to have a stable home now.

One of the huge issues in public education today is the insistence on non-core subjects. A lot of the influence of the educational system on our children coild be eliminated aply by paring back the curriculum to basic stuff, and rigorously enforcing objective methods of teaching and objective source material.

They can't process that human causes have human effects. You can't just vote for unicorns, then wonder why the whole state budget goes into trying to genetically engineer a unicorn. But they do, because their anti-philosophy is based in the idea that there is no truth. If there is no truth, everything is relative, and every idea no matter how idiotic or barbaric is equal. That means in their mad little pea brains, socialism will eventually work somewhere.

It's the Cliff Notes version of a much longer and exhaustively thorough analysis, and there's some weird knock-on effects that come from it. Basically, every evil and stupid thing the leftovers do is due to their ideological root. The victim thing, for instance. If you don't believe in truth and every idea is equal, and something wins at the roulette table every time, that thing is obviously cheating. Western Civilization has been on a winning streak since the Trojan War, hence the irrational hatred.

The first one is Conquest, the white horse, who rides forth to conquer and is said to have a double-edged sword that comes out of his mouth.

Posted by: Anna Puma at October 06, 2015 08:09 AM (C6cTZ)

It's due to the decline of religion. As ace once noted a long time ago, Jung did studies and figured out that religion acted like a box for magical thinking, which was an intrinsic quality of human consciousness. We all have it. Organized religion confines it to theological spheres and lets you devote more of your gray matter to reason.

When you get rid of the religion, you don't get rid of the magical thinking. You just give it free reign to latch onto anything, or everything.

You cannot just smack one graph without an x/y axis denotation over another graph, as a transparency, with its own x/y axis that IS shown in another color and expect your reader to grasp what you did, one color being meaningless on the graph, without STUDYING your graph, the graphic picture you made to make information accessible in a snap. It defeats the purpose of splaying on a graph. I HATE shit like this. Stuff your stupid graph. The information is much better in words. The overlapping nonsense picture with conflicting x/y axis (one of them omitted) sucks.
