Overnight Open Thread (9-17-2015)

Quote of the Day I

The 10-month, $500 million U.S. effort to train and equip moderate Syria had yielded a "small number" of fighters, Austin said, far short of the 15,000 planned over a three-year period.

"The ones that are in the fight, we are talking four or five," Austin told the stunned committee.

The U.S. military has spent $43 million of the $500 million allotted by Congress, or roughly $9 million per fighter. (The U.S. had originally planned to have 5,400 fighters trained by now.) Wormuth said the U.S. military was considering alternative plans but refused to say what those plans were or when they may be rolled out.

"The new Syrian Force Program has gotten off to slow start," Austin deadpanned, in response to the 5,395-man deficit in the number of fighters the U.S. hoped to train this year.

-- From Army Gen. Lloyd Austin's testimony before Congress this week

Quote of the Day II

"Germany isn't just the country of milk and honey, where everything you would want flies into your mouth like a fried pigeon," German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Shaefer said last week.

EU rules require member states to ensure "a dignified standard of living" for asylum-seekers. That includes housing, food, clothing, a daily allowance, and access to public health care, education and the job market while their claim is processed, which can take up to a year or more.

Quote of the Day III

Brock explains how his conversations with Blumenthal, a man of "surpassing intellect and fervent devotion to the Clintons," were the inspiration for Hillary Clinton's infamous "vast right-wing conspiracy" comments in response to the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Blumenthal later told Brock he "went straight to Hillary" after one of their phone chats about the Lewinsky story.

Decades later, Brock and Blumenthal are two of the most loyal, if sometimes erratic, members of Hillary Clinton's inner circle of advisers. They have both parlayed this obsessive loyalty into massive personal fortunes. These are the people who will be running the country if Hillary avoids jail time and is elected president.

-- Andrew Stiles in How David Brock Became Sidney Blumenthal

Quote of the Day IV - Inverted Justice Edition

"If there are 10 people who have been accused, and under a reasonable likelihood standard maybe one or two did it, it seems better to get rid of all 10 people," Polis said. "We're not talking about depriving them of life or liberty, we're talking about them being transferred to another university, for crying out loud."

-- U.S. Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO)

Quote of the Day V

We are raising a generation of young writers who are trashing their Google rankings in exchange for $100 and a tweetstorm, who are learning nothing about the craft of reporting except that their musings on incest go viral, who are generating #content without generating anything worthwhile or lasting.

Anyway. You should read that piece and weep for the future or something. Or not. As a wise man once said, my strong suspicion is we get the world we deserve. And we probably deserve endless rivers of first person pieces about the horrible things we have done and had done to us. Selfie culture is all-consuming.

John Hinderaker: More Bullshit From Bernie

He's had just about enough of Bernie Sanders' ignorant and dishonest radicalism and fisks his speech from earlier this week at Liberty University paragraph by paragraph. And it's a beautiful thing.

Bullshit. What does Sanders want to do about the fact that the people who founded Facebook have made a lot of money? Prohibit innovation? Limit the number of people who can access popular web sites? Make it illegal to sell advertising if the owners of the web site are already rich? The only "remedy" he can come up with is higher taxes, but America already has the most progressive income tax regime of any developed country-more progressive than Sweden, Denmark, you name it. And yet Democrats like Sanders keep telling us how awful things are for most Americans. Maybe we should try lower taxes on the "rich," since the world's highest taxes evidently haven't worked. By the way, when Democrats talk about rich people, they always use Mark Zuckerberg-a Democrat, no doubt-as an exemplar, but when I read the fine print, I always find that they mean me.

Detroit Neighborhoods Now Recruiting Squatters For Empty Homes

It's no joke. In a remote pocket of northwest Detroit along the Rouge River, neighbors are so desperate to stop a cycle of abandonment and blight they're recruiting a squatter to occupy a home whose longtime owners left last weekend.

That's because neighbors fear the onetime farmhouse on Puritan and Hazelton will be stripped and torched if it remains empty for long. Eight nearby houses burned in the past two years. A few blocks away, there are more weedy lots than homes.

..."You want someone in the house when it's still functioning. Otherwise, it will be destroyed in 24 hours."

New British Carrier To Deploy With USMC Air Wing For Protection

Suppose you have a brand-new aircraft carrier, but the jets that will operate from that ship won't be available in sufficient quantities for another five years.  How do you utilize that platform to its full capabilities in the interim, without its primary strike asset?

For Britain's Royal Navy, that is the near-term challenge: their new fleet carrier, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, is in the final stages of construction and will begin sea trials next summer, with initial flight training in 2017-2018.  But with the RN's first F-35 squadrons not scheduled to achieve their initial operating capability until 2020 (at the earliest), the Brits are looking for aircraft that can embark earlier and provide a combat punch before their own Lightning IIs are ready for action.

The solution is a lesson in creativity and coalition warfare.  According to the U.S. Naval Institute, the RN has reached agreement with the U.S. Marine Corps to deploy F-35 squadrons on the Queen Elizabeth until British units achieve their IOC in the jet

Leftwing Pacifica Radio Network Entering Final Stages of Death Spiral

Just five radio stations is a pretty small network.

The allegations were the latest convulsion in a simmering crisis at Pacifica Radio, a network of five independently operated, listener-supported radio stations, including New York's WBAI, which are known for liberal views.

Founded in 1946 by conscientious objectors from the second world war, the network was an influential outlet for Beat poets, Bob Dylan and Vietnam war protesters but has in recent times suffered from dwindling ratings, in-fighting and financial hemorrhage.

The network's biggest star - Amy Goodman, host of the independently produced Democracy Now! - is also its biggest creditor. She is owed an estimated $2.1m in unpaid broadcast fees.

Strong Evidence For Cause of the Permian Extinction

A 252 million year old whodunnit may finally be solved.

The extinction at the end of the Permian is a major event in Earth's history. We define it as the boundary between two Eras, the second largest division in the geologic timeline.

At that boundary, over 90% of all marine species went extinct. Some familiar life forms including the trilobites disappeared forever while other ecosystems shifted permanently; such as bivalves like clams suddenly becoming much more common in the oceans than the brachiopods that dominated the Paleozoic.

Since the scale of this mass extinction was realized in the 20th century, one of the enduring mysteries of geology has been its cause. Scientists have proposed impacts of asteroids, chemical catastrophes in the ocean or the atmosphere, and impacts from massive volcanic eruptions now called the Siberian traps.

For those who can't be bothered to read the article the killer was: The Jews....in the form of volcanoes. They're very crafty like that.

Film Footage of a Person Born in the 1700s

Maybe.

Being 114 in 1905 would place Despina's year of birth at around 1791, only a few years after the formation of the United States. There's no independent confirmation of her age outside of the film's original title and Milton Manaki's memoirs (published in Romanian), but even if she were only 102 at the time, she would best Clark's 1804 birth year

Man Taking 35 Viagra Pills 'For Laughs' = Medical Emergency, 5 Day Erection, Laughs For the Rest of Us

But after pill number 35, laughter gave way to concern. After his vision turned green-a Viagra side effect known as cyanopsia-and he experienced what he described to The Sun as "a massive erection that would not go away," Medforth went home to his wife, who promptly redirected him to the hospital where he belonged. And there he stayed there for the next 36 hours-one hour for every year of his life that he almost threw away.

He told The Daily Beast that his wife was "a little mad" at him, which, one would hope, is an understatement.

I'm at a Marriott branded hotel in Vegas. Won't get any more specific than that, although it may have a yard in which you could hold a legal proceeding.

Anyhoo, when I tried to check in yesterday at 3:00, I was told they were still getting my room ready. "Ok, how long?" "2 hours". Cool, off to the bar across the parking lot.

Call them at 5:00 to inquire about readiness. 2 more hours. Called them at 7:00. About another hour. I had already gotten my key, so I was kinda pissed and went to look at the room for myself.

They were assembling the bed and just needed to make it. They had been renovating and I am the first guest in this newly done wing of the hotel.

The 10-month, $500 million U.S. effort to train and equip moderate Syria had yielded a "small number" of fighters, Austin said, far short of the 15,000 planned over a three-year period.
"The ones that are in the fight, we are talking four or five," Austin told the stunned committee.

"But the White House says it is not to blame. 123 Not impressed by the Siberian traps story. Correlation =/= causation. Granting that the time data is correct, they are still totally speculating on why the eruption of the traps should have caused a mass extinction, when the many other instances of flood basalt eruptions don't seem to be linked to mass extinctions. There's no smoking gun there.

And those eruptions don't come from "volcanoes" as we know them. They are "fissure eruptions", and tend to be pretty placid, as such things go. Big crack in the crust opens up as a result of tension, and basaltic magma wells up and floods over the plain.

The new bit of information is they have finally established the timeline. The Siberian Traps were a plausible cause, but the timing could not be pinned down.

The eruptions themselves were not enough to alter the atmosphere enough to cause an extinction, instead the eruptions caused very old carbonate deposits to decompose to seeohtoo and that is what conked life on the head.

I also don't think the Traps provide a full explanation. I think migration of benthic low-oxygen water and massive releases of hydrogen cyanide happened at the same time.

I faver the perfect shit storm hypothesis.

160 One long term climate/extinction event theorizing that fascinates me is the Sol system'ss motion through the Galactic environment. We're of course circling the center of the Galaxy, but due to the much more complex gravitational environment, it's not a simple elliptic path, there is a significant bobbing up and down the z-axis, with a period of 30 million years (or maybe it's 60 million, with 30 being the half cycle time, I forget).

There's also moving in and out of spiral arms, with significant variations in the interstellar environment.

I've read theories that this could explain the long-term climate changes, as well as some big extinction events. But it's all just fuzzy guessing at this point.

172 ISIS killer: Enhanced Radiation Weapons, I say (neutron bombs). I think how far they advanced that concept is classified, but I hear pretty good -- get as much energy out of a smallish fusion reaction as possible to go into the initial radiation pulse, minimizing the fireball and heat part.

But no one would have the balls to use it as it's a nuke. But get them massed somehow, fire off one of those, and fucking sterilize 'em, over a one mile radius or so. And not much nasty fallout afterwards. A little, but not too bad.

The Nigerian military were proving utterly incapable of getting to grips with Boko Haram, so, very quietly, units of South African mercenaries were brought in. And they quickly sorted the situation and put Boko on the back foot with disciplined, proven counterinsurgency tactics. Raids on villages went down to effectively zero.

Except that this constituted poor optics for the Nigerians, so they quit paying and sent the mercs back to South Africa. Now, the Boko bunch are back on the rampage again, and are back to carrying off entire villages of schoolgirls as slaves. Schoolboys? They have no resale value and are all killed outright.

Some may recall the utter paranoic hysteria which neutron bombs created among the European left during the early 1980s.

Americans, they said, were maliciously introducing these things, which would all be secretly set off one day, killing all of the local European population but leaving all of the housing and infrastructure intact, so that Americans (presumably Texas rednecks and other such alien species) could come take over and repopulate the place.

Fast forward a couple of decades. Now there's an alien species taking over and repopulating Europe, all right. Except it's not an American one.

And at this point, not exactly lamented. The stations are mostly fundraising, charlatans hawking lawn trimming in pills as wonder cures, and frothing Black and Mexican hate Whitey separatists.

But back in the day, it was an important outlet for left liberal speech, back when the media were still kinda conservative. I know, kids ask your grandparents.

Was a regular listener of the station in my precocious youth. Mostly for the SF show Hour 25, rip Mike and Mitch, but was also first exposed to Libertarian politics thru Lowell Ponte's show, a left-wing news perspective thru reporters like Marc Cooper who were left but not crazy, and parts of society I knew nothing about thru shows like IMRU.

Will be mourned, not for what it is now, but for what it was and what it gave to listeners.

Same here, broadcom isn't interested in updating my wifi card drivers for 10, or 8 for that matter, for whatever reason, so i'm sticking with 7 on my work laptop. I do have 10 on an old tower and like it, if you have to be on Windows it's better than 8, but like cthulhu pointed out, you're ultimately better off going to linux.

I checked out the current state of Linux a number of years back (and I'm thinking maybe a 2-digit number), and it struck me that it was about as polished and easy-to-deal-with as MSDOS 5. At the time, IIRC, everyone was all cool about how Win98 finally made USB usable.....so -- even though I loved BSD Unix in the early 80's -- I passed on by.

The current state of Linux is much like Win98. You still have to drill down to a shell sometimes to make things work right, but most of the time you can flounce around with a GUI. A lot of hardware just works. Doing standard things isn't all-that difficult. Releases like Mint are real easy to move to.....and full-scale implementations like Ubuntu are more user-friendly than ever.

I'm currently going virtual with anything I can, so as to be further protected, but if you're looking at learning Win7 or Linux Mint 17.2 for your next OS, I'd say it's a toss-up. If it's learning Mint or Win10, go for the Mint.

LDC, interesting re Pacifica. Years ago there was a time I listened to it too, but almost solely for the music. Local shows, maybe (DC). But incredible.

Blues show (forget name) - host, Jerry Something - "the 'bama" (pronounced like Alabama - you-know-who was an entirely unknown lowly functionary at some stupid community agitation operation or something). The host sounded like he really had lived the central-casting blues life he described - in/out of jail, broke, transient, etc. Knew a lot of the blues guys, would drop little anecdotes about being chased out of town or thrown in jail with some singers when he'd intro their song.

Haitian music - "Bombash (sp?)Creole". And African Rhythms and Vibrations (shit, I remember most of these names). And Latin shows. This was the 80s, before music was so accessible, this was "world music" before that term was being used much.

The "reporting" and politics were of course idiotic. But that could be fun too. Still clearly remember one talk show where the host asked the guest on the phone, who was a mine expert, what role the US played in this really awful icky bad bad land mine situation in such places as Angola, Cambodia, etc., and how that would affect the US position on the then-developing land mine convention.

Classic. A bit of dead air, as the guest (surely) tried to formulate a response that wasn't too humiliating to the idiot host. "Well, the US isn't really a cause of any of the problems you mentioned, the US doesn't export mines and along with its allies uses them in normal military fashion which is completely different than these situations we're seeing" (or words to this effect).

Now - dead air on the other side. Entire premise of show segment, entire "opinion" of host and like-mindless types, obliterated as being completely contrary to actual facts. Hilarious.

Well, first, I don't have to look up all that much, being as I was there when it was invented and had to learn the internals to make it work right in the first place. On the other hand, I've lost many an hour to dicking around with the internals of Win7 because Microsoft keeps moving things around in Control Panel. It's not exactly a CLI, but it might as well be.

And, second, there have been numerous occasions when I've had to get into things and twiddle the knobs....and when I had to do online research to find the knobs to twiddle.....mostly relating to networks and security. It's part of life with Microsoft, I'm afraid.

When there was no UI to speak beyond the command line, it was easy to have everything self-contained. But this also meant other joys like have separate print drivers for every program instead of telling the OS about the printer once.

Over the decades, every few years somebody claims they have a system that will have all the bells and whistles but also be really hard to break if you just do whatever you feel like. There was always some horrible drawback to these systems that doomed them in the cradle. Like trading zero dependencies for applications using absurd amounts of memory because they duplicated huge chunks of the OS GUI elements for each app.

Instead we've made the consumers happy by taking more and more control out of their hands and doing everything in a black box. Phones, tablets, and game consoles. Slowly but surely I'm encountering more and more people who own no device whose software isn't delivered from a single central outlet. It's like discovering you're the only person in the room who knows how to drive a stick.

405 It also explains why the Republicrats are jumping on the "pander to Hispanics train".

I thought Kasich (I think) did a good job explaining that at the Great Debate. We need more taxpayers or Social Security and the rest of socialist Ponzi scheme will collapse. We must destroy the country in order to protect socialism.

Question: In a couple of decades, when we have a population of 500,000,000, will we need another 500,000,000 hydro-dorsal Americans to prop it all up?

406 And right on cue the regime is making plans to fast track citizenship to all of the invaders he's been streaming into the country with the intention of them being eligible to vote in 2016

They already vote, the first person you see at my polling place every year is the spanish interpreter, pretty sure that interpreter isn't there for the legal immigrants who took the time to learn a modicum of english so they could asimilate or become a citizen.

407 This after a host of court rulings that say you can't fire people over their "looks". One wonders if this weight "thingy" was in their hiring contracts or personnel manuals?

Casinos call them server/entertainers - there is an exemption for performers that need to fill a role. Art, donchano?

I'm sure any day now, El Drunko and Yertle will stage a massive Congressional Rebuke to the President's illegal and unConstitutional actions, and after that, they'll go cash their latest CoC campaign donation checks!

409 Twin Peaks restaurants admit to hiring 20 illegals (which means there probably were a whole lot more) and agree to pay a $50,000 fine. That's good, but it would have been more meaningful to sentence the CEO to some jail time.

More meaninful to seize the restaurants and shut them down under asset forfiture.

Yes, we have to import people because we abort so many of our own.

414 Not that easy to escape Mackinac Island. Rubio fans are good swimmers, though.

Pretty damn good news coverage for a guy who's been drinking since 3 AM. Reminds me of the old days when there were real reporters. They drank a little.
