4 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, September 17, 2015. On this day in 2014 Trey Gowdy opened the Republican dominated Benghazi hearings. He used to be my hero, but after one year with no results other than more hot air I am disappointed. Scankles has drug her heals for a year and she has not been hit with a contempt charge.

8 Proof positive that the Nobel Peace Prize is political horseshit that has nothing to do with how the recipient encouraged and supported peace. In this case it was given to "strengthen the recipient". IOW it is a joke.

Well, there is this little bitty minor problem that that vets group has, namely, that they haven't filed their IRS tax forms for over 3 years. So no one knows how much in donations they have received, nor how they spent any of it.

48 I mentioned this yesterday, but it's worth repeating: that "refugee" who was tripped by the Hungarian camerawoman as he and a mob of his buddies were illegally entering Hungary turns out to have a Facebook page in which he is shown posing with the flags of several Islamic terror organizations, including ISIS. (He took the page down after people started commenting on it, but some people had saved shots of it).

Not suggesting it's a good idea to trip people running while carrying kids, but this camera woman's instincts were right on. And all the people who were acting outrageously outraged over her "abuse" of the "poor, innocent migrants" look like the damn fools they are.

POTUS will unleash the US Military on Isis, in coordination with Iran (after all the criticism of not pursuing ISIS he will be "bowing to public outcry" after all, and we can all agree what an enormous threat ISIS is )

Iran will consolidate gains in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and will be Muslim superpower/Islamic caliphate and threat of "Sunni" da'wa will be stopped permanently.

That's the plan.

Why does the state have to do it? When my brother was strung out, my dad took all of our guns to the local police department and turned them in for safe keeping because he didn't want him getting his hands on them and doing something stupid. If your level of awareness is so high about your relative, why don't you take matters into your own hands. It certainly is less threatening to someone who is unwell than sending in a SWAT team.

Sorry I don't have or have had any stories; I've got lots of books, but for various reasons I won't bore you with, I just haven't had the energy to write anything. But let me give you two birthday pictures.

First, Dolores Costello, grandmother of Drew Barrymore:

http://goo.gl/RmWWPq

A limpid beauty (she appears to wonderful effect in 1927s Old San Francisco) nicknamed "The Goddess Of The Silver Screen," the corrosive chemicals used in much early film makeup ravaged her complexion too seriously to hide; this, combined with a lisp, helped to more or less end her film career by 1930, though she made rare appearances on screen until a final retirement in 1943.

And here is Esther Ralston:

http://goo.gl/OeUTz1

A Bar Harbor girl, Ralston worked for Paramount in the silent days, earning up to $8000 per week and was a very popular actress. But by the 1930s she was generally playing supporting or cameo roles and she decided to retire ion 1940. Interest

76 **deep sigh**

Let's try again.

Esther Ralston, like Fay Wray, had a difficult life; in fact, screenwriter Robert J. Avrech, whose three-part series on Wray I mentioned the other day, also did a series of posts on Ralston, mentioning her abusive husbands and the sexual harrassment she suffered at the hands of director Dorothy Arzner and mogul Louis B. Mayer.

It was Mayer, in fact, whom Ralston was convinced ended her career; after being dropped by Paramount, Mayer, who wanted Ralston for MGM, had the hots for her and expected her to - well, let's say, "perform" for him. When she refused - Mayer stormed "Let me tell you, I can have any woman on this lot" and Ralston shot back, "Perhaps you can - any woman but Esther Ralston," - the studio chief sold her contract to Universal and basically blackballed her.

Here's a publicity photo from Ralston's 1927 film Ten Modern Commandments:

No. You are talking about abrogating a Constitutional right. You had better be a qualified medical professional.

Extend that to other rights.
Disturbed - no hearing, no voting.
Disturbed - no 4th or 5th Amendment protections.
Etc.

So a person should have their property immediately confiscated by police on the basis of an uncorroborated phone tip from a person claiming to be a family member?

Oh, yes, of course the police should be able to do that. Because we know people would never, ever lie, right?

Husband (who, unbeknownst to police, is in the middle of a bitter divorce and custody battle with wife) calls police and says "I'm deeply concerned about my wife. She has threatened to kill our children, and she has guns in the house." So police, acting on concerned husband's tip, go to house and confiscate wife's guns, without an investigation or hearing. Next day, husband goes to wife's house (knowing she is now unarmed), and blows her away.

Does Hugh Hewitt understand anything at all about human behavior? Because his stupid question certainly suggests otherwise.

Posted by: MTF at September 17, 2015 07:24 AM (eFRS+)

Well, he was a tough bastard, as you had to be in that business. And he was manipulative, biased and underhanded. On the other hand, if you were a loyal member of the MGM "family," went along with studio dictates and didn't make waves, you were set for life; Mayer would make sure, either through himself, studio "fixer" Eddie Mannix or head of security Howard Strickland, that any problems were taken care of.

And Mayer - which is funny, after my telling you about his pursuit of Ralston - was mawkishly sentimental about womanhood and motherhood. When director Erich von Stroheim told him "All women are whores," Mayer punched him in the mouth. And actor John Gilbert's recounting of his actress mother's once tumbling head over heels on stage - "That was the first time I saw my mother's bare ass" - did nothing to endear the star to Mayer, who always loathed Gilbert.

If you're interested in Mayer, the biography Lion of Hollywood by Scott Eyman is very much worth reading.

135 Watched the highlights reels and checked Twitter during the debate while I was at work. Not a great night for Trump, not a bad one, either. His polling will probably remain even.

Jeb didn't come out looking stronger, which I think was CNN's intent. The casino gambling spat looked a bit desperate. I've seen complaints here and there that Trump only gives to law makers, not governors. But he has given quite a bit to the party.

That was the case in Florida. Trump gave $50,000 to the Republucan party in 1998 while looking into casino gambling on Seminole land. A business partner was pushing for it harder, but Trump was pretty hands off and only gave Jeb $500. He hosted a fundraiser for him, but he didn't lobby him.

Fiorina was okay, not really exciting. I get the "that face" thing. She kinda seems like a scold. It's a fine line between ball buster and confident, and Fiorina makes Hillary look relaxed and unscripted. I hate these feminist lectures of hers.

Carson's support will drift toward Walker, I think. He's seen his target group go in two different directions. The "fighter who wins" group went to Trump. There's no getting them for a while. Those who think piling on him will help haven't figured out attacking him at this point reinforces his outsider cred. Walker should make a play for Carson's "It's okay to be boring" supporters, because Walker is just a boring guy.

Rubio was worse this time. Kasich still sucks. Christie is improved. Huckabee probably scored with evangelicals.

Carson seems like a good guy and was probably an excellent doctor, but he frequently appears to be in over his head in these policy debates.

=====

This I have an opinion on.
Its not just the Republicans going that way. It shows more because we're going through our version of the 1968 Dem Convention now, but I think we've entered a period where bombast and mob tactics win the day rather than reason and such. It just is. Rome went the same way after the Gracchi.

169 I see Madonna is again scaling the heights of musical taste and genius. The NY Post says that her new "Holy Water" tour features her pulling off a costume to reveal a skimpy nuns outfit which she wears while climbing a pole. Vic, part of the problem seems to be that McCain was involved in Benghazi:
http://tinyurl.com/orsvbyn

Relevant excerpt:
"During the Spring of 2011, as the Obama administration ramped up efforts to topple the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, a licensed American arms dealer, Marc Turi, his business partner formerly with the CIA, senior US military officials in Europe and Africa as well as a former staffer for republican Senator John McCain considered logistics for arming the rebels, according to the emails exclusively obtained by Fox Business and Fox News.

Turi is facing federal trial this December on two counts that he allegedly violated the arms export control act by making false statements. Turi denies the charges, and alleges there was a rogue weapons operation run with the knowledge of Mrs. Clinton’s state department.

The email dated March 22, 2011 was sent by Admiral James Stavridis, when he was the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, from his government email account to Turi’s business partner David Manners.

The email was also copied to General Carter Ham, then head of the defense department’s Africa command. Stavridis vouches for Manners as a United States Naval Academy classmate and “former CIA Officer with deep connections throughout the near Middle East.”

Also copied on the email is Mike Kostiw who worked for Senator John McCain until February 2011 on the Senate Armed Services committee. It is not known from the emails reviewed by Fox whether the parties responded, or whether others were brought into the discussion."

199 At the end of the day, what matters in a long marathon like a primary campaign is money.

Four of them have it. Bush, Rubio, Cruz, and Walker.

Will Fiorina get a poll bump? Yeah, she will. Will it matter much more than the bump that Carson got last month? Maybe, but probably not if the donations don't start coming in in the 10s of millions like the four mentioned above.

Remember, there are six more of these things, I think.

Cruz actually had a talk-time in the top half. He just didn't seem to be living up to the "champion debater" reputation. His supporters have been reduced to complaining that he was "cut off." No, he just wasn't very assertive. Which doesn't matter all that much because he has the money to keep going well into the new year.

People don't like it but Bush has more than enough money to keep going for a very long time. As lackluster as he is, he will be one of the last 2 or 3 guys standing. People need to deal with that reality.

Rubio made anybody bitching about campaigning in Spanish look like troglodytes. Yeah, what we really want is for our candidates to be filtered through leftist Spanish-language media translators, right, instead of being able to talk directly, themselves, to the Spanish-speaking voters? Rubio crushed that.

John Kasich has been a good governor of Ohio, all things considered, but he doesn't belong on that stage.

Walker just needs to keep on keeping on. He has the record conservatives say they want, the tone that disarms LIVs, and enough money to get past this 16-person scrum stage of the campaign and into the new year. He just needs to keep building his org in early states, stay on-message, and be who he is, i.e., a normal person.

It depends on what you want to read. If you have some special interest, ask me. Otherwise,

The DeMille bio Empire Of Dreams by Scott Eyman is, like his Mayer bio, well-written. Sin In Soft Focus by Mark Viera is an older book, but a lavishly-illustrated look at Pre-Code Hollywood movies. And the film professor Jeanine Basinger has two excellent books - Silent Stars, which looks at the careers of several well-knownactors and actresses, and The Star Machine, which is an in-depth look at how the big studios like MGM and Paramount found, trained and marketed their stars; it's a very entertaining book, even if it sounds dry.

And, of course (he said modestly), there is a lovely little silent film mystery called The Director's Cut: A Theda Bara Mystery which you might find worth your while.

231 Only caught like 30 min of the debate between 9-10 last night. Here's what I got out of it:

-Trump... still doesn't make a lot of sense, and nobody else can figure out what to do about that. He's the ultimate wild card. He doesn't even know what he's going to say, so nobody else can prepare for it.
-Rubio, Cruz, and Firoina sounded the most articulate (The section I heard was about foreign policy in the middle east and Putin).
-Walker argued with Jeb and Trump and didn't seem to get anywhere.
-Christie seemed personable, not in a good way, but the Bill Clinton sociopathic sort of way.
-Carson really disappointed me. I'm sure he's the smartest man up there, but the guy just did not seem good at thinking on his feet. He's not naturally a debater or salesman. I don't doubt that if he'd been giving a lecture on surgery, he'd have sounded a lot better than he did, but he really reminded me of an amateur debater who crammed the material for a day or two.
-Kasich wasted 5 minutes of potential time talking about the issues with a speech about how much he cared about the issues and that we need to focus more.

I feel like I must have missed someone. There were a million people on stage and I can't imagine I heard from them all.

It would be idiotic to give the police that kind of power. Everybody who is involved in a dispute with somebody else would then have an easy way to ensure that their adversary is disarmed: just call the police and tell them you're disturbed by the person's erratic behavior, and BTW Mr. Policeman, this person has guns so you need to hurry over there and take all the guns away before somebody gets hurt!

Somebody needs to explain to Hugh Hewitt that there is a reason why we have hearings before we let the state take away somebody's property or their liberty: we need to know the facts. We can't just assume that everybody is going to act in good faith and tell the truth, because that's just not how human nature works. And yes, sometimes hearings take too much time and somebody gets hurt who wouldn't have gotten hurt if we'd been able to act more quickly. But no system is ever going to operate perfectly, and it's better to have a system where people have the right to due process than a system where people can be stripped of their right to defend themselves based on nothing more than an uncorroborated phone call to police.

What a bunch of simplistic, patronizing bullshit.

Grown adults are not children, that need to be "taught" the "proper" language to speak. Rubio was very clear about why his grandfather spoke Spanish to him, and what he talked about.

My own grandparents spoke Croatian in their home, and English when they had to, and only then. They voted straight Republican tickets because Democrats were reminders of Tito's communists back in Yugoslavia.

Were they not "assimilated?" My grandfather was a Marine and served this country in the Pacific, then was a steelworker in PA until he retired. Was he not "assimilated?"

260 "The problem with speaking Spanish, is I don't know what he is saying.
Nor do I trust him/them to say the the same thing to English American
audiences and Spanish American/illegal audiences."

And here we get to the crux of the problem. I'm not picking on you because I think you express what a lot of mono-lingual conservatives fear.

I do speak Spanish. And Croatian.

It is not Marco Rubio's problem that he is bilingual and you (the collective you) are not. It is your problem.

His job is to win as many votes as he can where he can. If his biligualism opens him up to be able to campaign in areas another candidate can't, that increases his ability to mine for more votes. It's a strength, not a weakness.

Most western leaders speak more than one language. W spoke passable colloquial Spanish. Nobody shit on him for it. Several of our candidates speak more than just English. People need to get over themselves about this. The world isn't going to just cater to the fact that you never bothered to learn another language, and other people who are bilingual are under no obligation to also cater to your ignorance.

I don't object to a candidate, if they are able, speaking to an ethnic audience in their own tongue. Fiorello LaGuardia was famous for it. What I do object to is the elevation of Spanish into the US' default second language, as evidenced by the signs you see around you every day.
