The entries that helped me were adverse -- nope, you can't use it to mean "inclined against;" that's averse (no "d") -- and enormity. Enormity, I was surprised to learn, is not just about dimension, but moral badness: It would be wrong to say "the enormity of his success." You can only use it to mean enormous evil. Who knew? The Yazidi Slave Girls and Boko Haram Child Brides were very heartened to see American feminists taking a such a strong stand against the important issue of asking women to smile. This idiot is trolling the world by starting a GoFundMe fundraiser to combat his daughter's future anticipated pay gap. Not for his son of course, though. Evan Sayet's old essay on his conclusions after years of struggling to figure out why liberals made excuses for the 9/11 terrorists: because they've been taught there's no such thing as good or evil, or of one thing being better than another, so any proof of one thing being evil (or worse than something else) must be met with hysterical babblings about root causes or chickens coming home to roost. By the way: All liberals think they themselves are better, and the things they themselves think are good, and that people who disagree with them are evil; but they apply this nothing-is-better-than-anything-else line of thinking to disputes having nothing to do with them (such as the dispute between murderous jihadists and Americans -- they don't really consider themselves American, you know). Long essay (which I was trying to digest and excerpt before giving up) suggesting that Political Correctness/microagression culture taught in college is actually psychologically damaging students, warping their thinking, and making them mentally ill-- by a guy from FIRE and that Jonathan Haidt guy, at the Atlantic. The idea is that just as cognitive therapy teaches people to not make a big deal out of trivialities (like teaching people who have a phobia about elevators to learn to not be afraid of elevators), microagression brain-programming is a malicious form of cognitive therapy teaching people the exact opposite -- to fear this, hate that, fly off the handle about this other thing, and generally carry on like a lunatic about things that sane people do not even think about. And just as the good form of cognitive therapy can make a hysteric or neurotic a well-functioning individual, so can the insidious form of it turn a well-functioning individual into a hysteric or neurotic. I think it's 100% right and I'm glad someone had the guts to say so. Colleges and progressives generally are teaching young people how to be mentally ill.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Here's my contribution to the open thread:
After 9-11, and after Bush's earnest response to the attack, I thought we would win. We didn't actually lose, but in many ways I think it is turning out as bad, or worse than had we lost. Instead of winning, we quit trying to win. We tacitly accepted to let evil coexist with us. Before, we were seen I think, and we saw ourselves as the 'good' in the struggle of good and evil. There is no way that we are seen this way now and we hardly consider ourselves as filling that roll anymore. At best, we are ambivalent - apathetic. But on the other hand, our enemies are winning. They are winning for a lot of reasons: We refuse to see them, or treat them as enemies; We pay our jizya to them by allowing them to invade our countries and exist as a separate culture, polluting and diluting our own culture. Nobody, in their wildest imaginations, would have entertained the possibility that, in our efforts, in the sacrifices of our military, would the state of our struggle against our enemies, be where it is today. Today is a sad day of remembrance, made sadder to the point of depression by the reality of where we have come since 9-11 Posted by: Semper In Stercus at September 11, 2015 07:44 PM (BZAd3) 72

I'm a grad student at a public university pursuing a degree in clinical mental health counseling.
In my Multicultural Counseling class, we're learning that every problem found in minority groups is caused by the evil white man, that the evil white man oppresses all, and that the prevalent cultural system in the US is inherently racist and full of microagressions. You'd think in a program aimed at training people to assuage mental health problems that they'd be interested in diminishing those impulses, not encouraging them. I believe there is another strategy also in play.
The Progressives want us so worried about imaginary, or minor things, that we will allow them to emplace their agenda... and not look at their failed policies. Lets look at... oh... Black Lives Matter.... lots of attention... lots of media play. Yet... there are between 400 and 500 Americans shot by Police in total per year. This is total, both justified and unjustified. There are more than 14,000 murders per year, HALF of which on average are perpetrated by Blacks, usually on other Blacks. Thus, you are about 14 times more likely to die being murdered by a Black Male, than a Cop... BUT... by targeting Police shootings for their outrage, then can have a Perpetual Issue (Police will never be perfect), and thus do not have to look at their OWN failed Policies... which lead to the much more horrendous Murder Statistic they wish us to ignore... Heck.... we see it here on this Blog... with certain Trump haters who create mythical Trump Lovers and subscribe all kinds of mythical behavior to them... when you ask who these people are... you are never answered... Because you cannot FIX a MYTH.... and that Myth allows you license to do all kinds of crazy stuff. It's not just colleges and it's not just with microaggressions. Look at the transgender movement, or the radical sexual culture (such as zombie documents) and you'll see a celebration of mental illness. Behaviors that are outright dangerous are promoted and declared virtuous, and any who dare speak against them attacked. Posted by: Colorado Alex at September 11, 2015 07:55 PM (fC9RO) 113

This is not a regularly occurring mistake with grammar, but it always makes me laugh when i recall it. My mother was a college English professor. One of her courses was Freshman Composition. She used to save the funniest errors from the papers of her students. One student wrote, " My mother bore me standing up" which I think was really supposed to be, "My mother raised me to be an upstanding/moral person." It sounds painful for the mom anyway.

I've always considered that anyone who is talking about how little they care can in fact care less by not talking about it at all. So it's always made sense to me even though it bothers others. The last thread died I think while I was looking up some population statistics. Some of the troll-like posts claimed our math was bad, since illegals were such a small percentage of the population. And so I looked up the growth stats, and this was the post:
-------------------------------------------- Yeah, that math, how does it work. Well if they're such a small percentage, then how the hell are they going to put the chicken people out of business, along with all the other Big Food people as was mentioned above. Oh, and that math. You're looking at total population. We need to look at the children, not the whole damn population. As of now, minority (non-White) births are a majority of new births. 50.4% of the population under age 1 are non-white, with 26.3% being Hispanic. Then you look at population growth, which includes births and well as immigration. A whopping 91% of the the population growth from 2000-2010 (yes, this is true) was minority. 56% of the growth was due to Hispanics. That is due to immigration. ---------------------- I had no idea it was that large, but it is. I'd have to dig and find them, but there is some number that shows the vast majority of new jobs created over the last so many years has gone to immigrants. 94 million not in the labor force and yet the jobs are going to the new arrivals. And plugs in nicely with my own personal theory that the internet functions as an Insanity Generator and Multiplier.
Err, yes. Quite. *shifty eyes* Posted by: Grump928(C) at September 11, 2015 08:11 PM (rwI+c) By which I mean, that suppose your some guy whose been thinking lately that he'd really like to- fuck an Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich on the Space Mountain ride at Disneyland. Under normal circumstances, the potential Arby's fucker talks to one of his friends that he really been thinking a lot about fucking an Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich in the Space Mountain Ride at Disneyland, aaannnnnnddd the friend tells him "WTF?" or laughs, thinking it's a joke, or tells him to get help. Anyway discourages our potential Arby's fucker and let's him know that's unacceptable. PAF tests the waters with a few other people in his neighborhood and indeed figures out that perhaps Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich fucking isn't the best course of action. And maybe...just maybe it's kinda sorta bughouse nuts. So, he drops the idea. However, PAF gets on the internet... and low and behold there's a large number of people who think exactly the way he does. Abry's Roast Beef Sandwich fucking is the shizznizzle! So, rather than have his odd thinking readjusted by those around him, PAF is actively encouraged until he actually goes ahead and does what he's thinking. Apply this model to less asocial/antisocial thinking and you see what I mean. I think. YMMV. I never heard back from Ace, one of the others was able to fix it quickly, and the other one said he didn't know how to. Eventually the problem fixed itself, probably because my IP changed again. Brian May wrote the song "39":
In the year of '39 assembled here the volunteers In the days when lands were few Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn The sweetest sight ever seen And the night followed day And the story tellers say That the score brave souls inside For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas Ne'er looked back, never feared, never cried Don't you hear my call though you're many years away Don't you hear me calling you Write your letters in the sand For the day I take your hand In the land that our grandchildren knew In the year of '39 came a ship in from the blue The volunteers came home that day And they bring good news of a world so newly born Though their hearts so heavily weigh For the earth is old and grey, to a new home we'll away But my love this cannot be For so many years have gone though I'm older but a year Your mother's eyes, from your eyes, cry to me Don't you hear my call though you're many years away Don't you hear me calling you All the letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand For my life Still ahead Pity me. It'a about a space voyage at relativistic speeds. I think he's saying there that when the spaceman returns to Earth, he finds that his daughter is elderly. But it wasn't until the 90s that I really went nuts. There were various national and local performers I followed, and there was hardly a weekend went by that I didn't see some kind of live performance, ranging from major rock bands in stadiums to local folk musicians in coffeehouses. Sometimes on consecutive nights. Eventually by the late 90s I realized how much money I was spending on entertainment and dialed it back a notch, or several notches. Nowadays I'm practically a hermit. I much prefer small venues to large ones. Posted by: rickl at September 11, 2015 10:19 PM (sdi6R) 516

See, sometimes I think linguists are so rigid that they don't look at the world around them. For example, "begs the question" is almost always used "incorrectly." At what point does it then become standard or at least acceptable? I'd argue that we're at that point already.
There were several other examples along these lines. This reminds of Merriam-Webster's entry on many people's least-favorite word, "irregardless": "Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that 'there is no such word.' There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead." I agree with everything they have to say. We may not be happy that "irregardless" is a word (believe me--I'm a copy editor). "Regardless" is definitely better. But it *is* a word. Denying it just makes people look pompous and ignorant.
